I’m playing the part of Elphaba in Wicked at the Edinburgh Playhouse. It’s a great musical and huge West End show.

What’s the highlight of your career?

Probably this - bringing Wicked back to my hometown and letting the country see this amazing show.

What’s your dream?

Just to keep doing what I do and enjoying it.

Hopefully there are more roles out there that I can get my teeth stuck into.

Apart from Wicked, what’s your favourite musical?

That’s a difficult one but I think it’s Miss Saigon. It’s one of the first musicals I saw in London and the music is beautiful. It tells such a good story too.

What can’t you live without?

My iPod - I listen to music all the time.

T

he last time Brightonian Mike Rosenberg appeared in Edinburgh, it was for a charity busking session on the Royal Mile earlier this year, one which roadblocked the famous old street with hundreds of fans and lunchtime rubberneckers as he played a set which included his huge

2012 international hit Let Her Go. It was a reflection of the way he started out in music, true, but also a keen demonstration of just how far he’s come since he left school at the age of 16 and took himself off busking.

Under his performing name Passenger, Rosenberg still tries to harness as much of that “just a guy with a guitar energy” as he can, a Littlest Hobo of popular music who makes a lot of his own touring and press arrangements and

MUSIC | 23 can play al fresco to several hundred just like that (his charity busking tour also brought him to the steps of Glasgow’s Buchanan Street, outside the Royal Concert Hall), as easily as he can command a main stage crowd at T in the Park, play support to his friend Ed Sheeran or as near as sell out a weekend of dates at Edinburgh’s Usher Hall and Glasgow’s Academy, where he’s playing later this month.

A talented guitarist from his early teens, Rosenberg’s passion for music increased as his interest in schooling fell away. His first serious musical venture was in the band Passenger, which he formed with his friend Andrew Phillips and other local musicians, and which released one unheralded album in 2007, midway through its six year history. Perhaps suggesting that he was always better suited to lone performance than being part of a group, however, he would busk on his own around his time with the group, and when it finally folded in 2009 he would take himself off to Australia for the full globetrotting troubadour experience.

Although he would spend the next few years travelling between and performing in both hemispheres, it would be in Australia that his earliest work would make an impact.

The first two self-released albums, Wide Eyes Blind Love and Flight of the Crow, were recorded there and earned him a reasonably sized under the radar reputation throughout the country. Also Antipodes-recorded, 2012’s third record All the

Little Lights was set for similar success, until a Dutch fan known only as Dave offered to tout his favourite song from it, Let Her Go, around his local radio stations.

Incredibly, a domino effect followed, with the song becoming first a huge hit in Holland and then across the world, even breaking the US top five. While it remains Rosenberg’s only hit single to date, this year’s release of the fourth album Whispers revealed a broader and more mature talent emerging. Certainly, his bookings this year suggest many thousands continue to listen.

was very lucky with both pregnancies and didn’t really have too rough a time at all. Both deliveries were straight forward too. In fact I was only in labour for just over an hour with Maggie - we made it to the hospital with only minutes to spare.

“Life has changed since becoming a Mum. It’s busy and hectic, but in a good way. I juggle my business with family and socialising. I think I’ve become more disciplined about my time too - unfortunately that means it’s hard to do anything spontaneous.

“I’m still on maternity leave with Maggie but it’s more of a working maternity leave as my business partner Tess is also on mat leave so we have to keep things going. I think juggling a business and being a mum is hard work but I love the challenge. I feel that working gives me a sense of balance and I am a better mum for it. It also helps that I’ve found a great nursery at Bonnington House Nursery and both my mum and Jonny’s do a day’s childcare each. I’m so pleased the children will have such a close bond with their grandparents.

“Becoming a parent has changed the way I think about my own parents. My mum had four children under seven and was much younger than me when she had us. My mum and dad are excellent parents and grandparents who have always put us before themselves and I really do see that.”

Mimi’s Bakehouse on The Shore is a treat, but much easier with babies than toddlers.

I’d also recommend Too ts Play café for mums with kids under five; it’s relaxed, affordable and a great place to meet friends.

For baby classes I like d Little Leithers when I had Ruairidh becaus e there were lots of mums with babies of the same age. Trinity Toddlers is great too a friendly toddler group with great toys.

On family days out we love to go to Yellowcraigs and play on the beach. We also love a walk around the Botanics followed by a scone in the coffee sho p.

What gives Edinburgh its edge?

Its sheer beauty, friendliness and the fact that almost everything is within walking distance.

Is there anything that would place the capital more firmly on the map?

I’d like to see Edinburgh championing its own wealth of contemporary artistic talent. It can be too easy to look for something from further afield when some of the best musicians, artists and filmmakers are actually right here under our noses.

What piece of art do you particularly admire in Edinburgh?

Eduardo Paolozzi’s bronzes on Picardy Place. The giant hand, foot and section of limb are an odd mixture of man and machine; they look back to Picasso and Cubism and nod to the modern age and our future.

FAR LEFT: Nevada, USA, 2008 This image of Bill was made for my Highway 50 project. I was the only non US citizen asked to create a portfolio for NBC’s Character Project. Eleven artists were eventually selected from many hundred who submitted their proposals and hopes as to how to capture the diversity of the US. I chose to drive the entire Highway 50 from West Coast to East Coast.

Lebanon,1993 I was in Lebanon making a personal project when driving north of Beirut I came across a group of folk living in tents at the side of the road. I was making some portraits of two men when this young girl simply walked between them. I made a quiet simple portrait and took only two frames before she turned and left. This is still one of my most powerful images and memories.

The title comes from a letter written to the photographer’s adoptive mother and is, along with the stark image free book cover, the first indication as to how personal David views his photography.

While other photographers would go for a flashy, bold or celebrity based image for a book cover, Eustace, who will be honoured as the first contemporary photographer to have his work exhibited at The Scottish Gallery in February 2015,

simply and subtley invites the viewer to delve inside and, with each page turn, revealing an intimate connection with each of his subjects. From windblown Hebridean landscapes to sun soaked vistas of America, from the knowing faces of the children of Lebanon to the serenity of child monks in Burma, along with a series of beautifully composed, intimate, celebrity portraits, from first viewing it is clear this volume of over 250 images taken over the past 25 years is far more than simply a collection of photographs.

Here, exclusively for i-on, David has chosen some of his favourite images from the book and reveals the story behind them.

Jundiai, Brazil, 2011 The four steelworkers portrait was for a portfolio I made to celebrate the 175th Anniversary of The WEIR Group. I was given complete creative freedom to produce a portfolio for them, based on my vision and personal study. This image was made at one of their steel plants in Brazil.

I’d been asked by the then editor to bring some new life to the fashion pages and approached my dear friends Kelly Cooper Barr and James Gilchrist.

Kelly eventually became the fashion editor and for three years we worked together to create a new look to the magazine. In this time the magazine won UK Supplement of the Year.

ABOVE: American Mid-West, 2009 This image is of my daughter, Rachael, and made during the In Search of Eustace project. I was approached by the US firm Anthropologie who had launched a new arts based web initiative with the idea to commission people who ‘inspired Anthropologie’. I was the first person asked and

again given complete freedom to come up with the project and its development. I decided to go on a road trip with Rachael, who was 16 at the time, and we covered over 2,500 miles around the American Mid-West. Starting at Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles and following a rather zig zag route, we ended up in a small town south of Dallas, Texas, called Eustace. It was very brave of Anthropologie at the time as even the clothes Rachael wore were her own and had no link to the company. It showed the confidence the company offered in their own brand. This was about artists and how they inspired the brand. I was once asked if this was my most important portfolio. I said I wasn’t sure... but I know it is my most meaningful.

I was travelling someway off the coast of Burma and came across this incredibly remote fishing village on a tiny island and a group of pilgrim monks had set up a small monastery on it. I found this child so peaceful and calming. There’s a link I knew existed as soon as I pressed the shutter’s button.

RIGHT: Glasgow, Scotland, 2011 This is John Byrne wearing a suit from another friend, Glasgow designer Deryck Walker. I regard John Byrne as Scotland’s greatest living artist and over the years have been fortunate enough to photograph him many times and get to know him as a friend. He is one of those people I find so incredibly inspiring and his outlook on art is very honest.

IT HAS BEEN AN INTERESTING FEW WEEKS i-on speaks to property expert Richard Loudon of Simpson & Marwick for advice on the property market in 2014.

H

aving had a very buoyant and active start to the year the market has been much stronger than in recent years with 25 per cent more sales. Our prediction that the market would quieten down in the early summer in the run up to the Referendum were proved wrong with good activity through July and August exceeding last year’s sales. Even the start of September was busier than we expected and it wasn’t until the second week of September that activity quietened down.

Once the Referendum was behind us there was an immediate spurt of activity and the recent announcement of the new Land and Buildings Transaction Tax means that we will see the market continuing to be very active throughout the winter months. Many sellers coming to the market earlier than they otherwise would and buyers above £325,000 trying to buy and complete before 01 April in order to avoid the significant increased tax. Likewise we anticipate that the early part of the spring will remain very active in the prime market for the same reason.

Other factors that have influenced the market is that we have seen a return of some buyers from outwith

Scotland who have probably been holding off until after the Referendum and the Buy To Let sector has recovered as a result of rents having increased significantly more in percentage terms than purchase prices over the last few years.

My advice to sellers wishing to sell at above £324,000 is – market your property sooner rather than later and try to take advantage of buyers wishing to avoid the increased tax from 01 April onwards.

ICONIC EDINBURGH The Dome

E

ven on a street as architecturally distinguished as George Street, The Dome still makes quite an impression – inside and out. It’s an Edinburgh tradition to set foot inside the bar and restaurant at this time of year so, if you’re there this festive season, take a minute to look past the stunning Christmas decorations and consider the building’s past.

The rather grand classical building was constructed for the Commercial Bank of Scotland head office and was designed by David Rhind, one of the foremost architects of his day. Its architecture draws direct inspiration from ancient Greece and Rome, with a huge portico (or porch) supported by columns as its entrance. Above this is a fine piece of sculpture with a central figure representing Caledonia flanked by others signifying prudence, agriculture, commerce, enterprise, mechanical science and learning.

The splendour continues inside with the telling-hall still as magnificent today, surrounded by classical columns supporting an ornamental roof with a breathtaking gilded dome, which, of course, gives the building its current name.

Look out for the figure of Fortuna Virilis, the Roman goddess of fortune in a mosaic on the floor. Also notice the stained glass in the rear windows, where the central panel has the crest of the Commercial Bank and its motto Didat Servata Fides (Keep Faith and Prosper). All of these are highly appropriate for a bank, but in the stained glass you will see the symbol of a winged staff and serpent, which is a reminder of the building that originally stood on this spot, the Physician’s Hall.

“S

erviced offices are all so grey and boring,” says entrepreneur Steve Leach of his latest project. “As a client I’d find it hard to be inspired by that - after all, habitat speaks a lot about a person or company. I wanted to create an environment that staff would enjoy and one that would reflect the personalities of the businesses as well as impress clients.” And if first impressions do count, then this office will definitely impress.

Set over two neighbouring townhouses on Queen Street, a central location was essential for Steve. “I’ve always loved Queen Street’s varied architecture so when the opportunity arose to buy two good sized neighbouring buildings in the right location I couldn’t resist.

“Originally built in the late 1700s for the Goldsmiths, one of the properties hadn’t been touched in at least 60 years prior to our arrival – it was very dark and dingy with rickety staircases. The upside to the lack of upkeep was that cornicing and plasterwork didn’t have years of paint layers ruining them.

“We’ve made some significant changes with the building décor but structurally the building is very similar.

We’ve preserved the traditional architectural features of the building both inside and out; painstakingly restoring all the fireplaces and plasterwork internally whilst reinstating all the original stonework externally. We even modified the original safe room - with its half ton steel door - into a shower room. We chose D&F Contractors to do the work because they’re hard working, trustworthy, reasonably priced and have real attention to detail.”

The interior design of the workplace wonderland was down to creative talents of design director Alison Vance and

her team at Jeffreys Interiors in Stockbridge. 14 months in the making, there are now top hats used as lights, gun door handles and Alcatraz jail toilets.

“We’ve worked with Jeffreys for some years now,” explains Steve. “They’ve got great skills, they ‘get’ us and they are right at home with a more quirky project.” But Steve also added his own personal touches too. “I often refer to Queen Street as the resting place for all the slightly unusual memorabilia I’ve collected over the years that my wife refuses to house,” he laughs.

“I’m an aviation nut so love the reception desk that is made from a 737 door and the table made from a DC3

tail plane. They’re beautifully made and I love the romantic thought of all the destinations around the world that they may have seen.” Sourced online by Steve and then shipped from Turkey, a reception area has never instilled such wanderlust.

Proving that boardroom meetings can be inspirational where ideas and creativity flows, the power of art is a focal point too. “I love a blank canvas and thought the idea of ultra violet paint and UV lights could be really interesting so we commissioned a young graffiti artist, via Gumtree, to create some wall art in the meeting room.

“My favourite room though is the Q15Bar. It’s our private bar and a great size for 10 to 60 people. It’s a fantastic place to host a reception and it’s a warm and welcoming space without any pretensions.”

If you’re now thinking what we’re thinking you’ll want to move office too. Currently 15 Queen Street isn’t advertised but word of mouth is a powerful thing. “I suppose I’m keen to attract other like-minded businesses to create a type of incubator right in the city centre,” Steve says optimistically.

Brewed using traditional techniques and no pasteurisation or filtration, with flavours varying from Red Rye, Good Ordinary Pale Ale and specials such as Beet Red Beer and Jagger IPA, you won’t be without a pint. The Volcano IPA, a light malt flavour and hops, is a must try.

Continuing the booze trail down in East Lothian is Archerfield Walled Garden where this small independent brewery creates its signature craft beers. Set up by Robert Knops with state of the art equipment imported from Italy, Walled Garden boasts a small selection of craft ales including Golden Ale and Dark Ale from the microbrewery.

Tours operate for groups of 10 or more, but should you pop

in without a booking, you’ll be allowed a nosey into the inner workings of the brewery with an informal and educating short tour, depending on the beer production schedule and availability.

And, for a behind the scenes look at a brewery with one of the widest selection of beers and lagers this side of Scotland, Stewart Brewery on the outskirts of Edinburgh is worth a visit on Saturdays. On arrival you’ll be given a chilled glass of beer to sample and learn about the history of beer with your tour guide. It costs £7.50 per person and there’s no need to book. Just arrive between 12 and 4pm.

s restaurants go, Aizle is far less pretentious than the ‘neo-bistro’ moniker that they use on their website suggests. What is ‘neo’ however is the rather exciting/ terrifying concept of having no menu, just a list of the ingredients that are used - a nightmare if you’re a control freak or an adventure in food if you like living on the wild side. I’ve always been in the slightly controlling camp when it comes to putting things in my mouth so I was somewhat dubious about the impending dinner.

My resistance dissolved as we walked into the relaxed and buzzy bistro, all vintage chic and cool tunes. By the time I’d supped my first paired drink, a rather lovely IPA beer, I was totally on board with the whole adventure.

The chef/owner, Stuart, doesn’t restrict himself to set dishes but rather gets the best seasonal ingredients available and then creates the menu around this. Sounds

like hard work but luckily for him he only changes the menu monthly. So all well and good conceptually but how does it taste? The food is outstanding and each course (of four) is small but perfectly balanced. The freshness pops out of each ingredient, and it’s obvious that he respects the food and is light handed with seasoning or any untoward tinkering. The dishes are, however, meticulously prepared.

We were lucky to have a table with a view of the second kitchen where an assistant was dabbing, piping, foaming and dressing beautiful plates of food - like a performance in itself which just adds to the sense that you’re part of a nightly culinary show.

The two standout courses for my partner and I were the fish ones. Loch Awe trout, with potato, pear and sweet cicely was delicious and the paired chardonnay with its slight oily taste was perfect. The Mallaig skate with parsley

root, seaweed and sea astor was equally stunning but chef happily wanted to drag us away from our fishy heaven with a bold meat dish of partridge which is currently in its very small season (Orkney beef was the alternative for non gamers) chanterelles, elderberry and dandelion.

The dessert course came as a slight disappointment after the embarrassment of riches served to us throughout the meal. A blackberry sorbet with whipped ricotta lacked the sweetness to satisfy my sweet tooth and felt more like a palate cleanser but no matter because the whole experience was excellent. The plates we enjoyed are unlikely to be repeated but I will definitely return, confident that chef will continue to deliver the same high standard of food with any list of ingredients. Walking on the wild side is a good bet at a place like Aizle.

s a bit of a meat addict and a sucker for steak, the only thing I love more than a good rib eye is a burger.

When they’re done the right way, they can be hard to beat. That’s even more prominent when the restaurant’s name is Just Burgers and Beers, as is the case of the newly opened burger joint next to St Giles Cathedral on the Royal Mile. If burgers are the only thing on the menu as the name suggests, my punt is they will be up there with the best in town.

When my lunch date and I visited on a busy Saturday, the restaurant was humming with large groups of friends clinking glasses of frothy craft beers. The menu here is an entertaining list of creatively named burgers like The Joe Pesci, The Frying Scotsman, Brinner and The Dirty South.

I finally settled for The Carlos Santana, £10, a burger of

immense proportions with salsa, tortilla chips, chicken and jalapenos, sandwiched between homemade Navajo flatbread. My greedy lunch date went for the Man vs Burger, £14, an eye popping glossy bun filled with two 6oz beef patties, BBQ beer pulled pork, bacon, lettuce, cheese, tomato and gherkins which he wolfed down in lightning speed before declaring it to be one of the best burgers he’d had - a sentiment I agreed with. We even managed a side of fries, £3, and onion rings the size of donuts, £3.50.

Just Burgers and Beers is a fab spot for a relaxed lunch date and a great feed - in portion size and taste. A definite contender for the best burgers in town.

We’re a selfie loving nation. In the UK alone, if the stats are true, we take 35 million of them every month. But who are the biggest fans? A recent survey from Click Stick reveals the stats.

Newcastle men pose the most. 25 per cent of all the UK’s selfies are taken by Geordie lads.

Liverpool is the city with the most selfie lovers, with a staggering 67 per cent of all residents taking one.

More than two thirds of ladies snapping selfies in London preferred a pout instead of a smile.

61 per cent of selfies in Manchester included more than one person, showing what a friendly bunch they are.

Nearly half of people who’ve taken a selfie admitted enhancing the photo before uploading.

35 per cent of all drunken selfie takers admit removing pictures from social media platforms the next morning.
