IN SHORT | 11

IN SHORT Hamish McGregor, clarinet player and founder of Fat Sams Band

What brings you to the Queen’s Hall? We’re playing our trademark jump-jive and swing for the last time at the band’s final farewell concert on Sunday 15 February. We’ll be marking the occasion with a host of special guests and a look at our scrapbook of photos and video-clips. What attracted you to jazz music? I was blown away when I first heard Joe Jackson’s Jumpin’ Jive album in June 1981 and decided that this was my kind of music. His album contained songs from the repertoires of Louis Jordan and Cab Calloway – the fathers of Jump’n’Jive.

Eat Spanish. Drink Spanish.

What can’t you live without? My white clarinet and my wife, Libby. The best things in life are… jazz music, swing music and jump jive. For tickets to Fat Sam’s Band: The Farewell Concert at the Queen’s Hall, 85-89 Clerk Street, Tel: 0131 668 2019 or visit www.thequeenshall.net

THE WA R ON DRUGS words ∙ David Pollock

T

he War on Drugs has been going on for too long and it’s time something was done about it. We’re talking, as if it wasn’t obvious, about Philadelphian indie-rockers The War on Drugs, who have been waiting for nearly a decade to enjoy the success which has only recently come their way. They arrive in Edinburgh later this month as part of a UK tour in support of third album Lost in the Dream, which finally broke them as a band in 2014 after a lengthy toil in relative obscurity. The sad irony is that the record’s epic scope was at least partly inspired by a period of depression experienced by the group’s singer and main songwriter Adam Granduciel. Following the release of the band’s well received but not as well-known Slave Ambient album in 2011 and its associated touring cycle, Granduciel would return home to a feeling of deflation and anxiety about how he would follow the record up, his energy reserves expended.

What came next was a tortuous two year process of second guessing himself as he made this record. If any album is worth putting its creator through such an experience, though, this one might be. From the opening and appropriately titled Under the Pressure there are towering emotional resonances and echoes of some American greats; Granduciel’s voice reminds of Dylan with the weary yelp which finds its way into his vowels, and the music’s hard working but hopeful drama bears echoes of Bruce Springsteen, particularly with the sound of a saxophone in the background. There are also shades of the finest contemporary alternative American rock in there, with resonances of The National ringing pleasantly on tracks like the driving, insistent An Ocean in Between the Waves and Burning, and the striding, Dylan-echoing Eyes to the Wind. It’s an emotional record throughout, but in an understated sense, as on the dreamily tidal soundscapes Suffering and The Haunting Idle.

There’s an association between a couple of recent stars of US music, including Kurt Vile and his band the Violators, who count Granduciel amongst their number, with Vile having been a member of The War on Drugs until after their first album, 2008’s Wagonwheel Blues. Granduciel and current War on Drugs member David Hartley also played on Sharon Van Etten’s sublime 2014 breakthrough record Are We There, and it’s into this lineage which this band now fall – a powerful and increasingly emergent contemporary style which relies on echoes of the past and timeless emotive sentiment to create something special. Hopefully Granduciel finds following this great record easier than the last. The War on Drugs play the Usher Hall on Saturday 28 February. The album Lost in the Dream is out now on Secretly Canadian.

MY I-ON EDINBURGH

Mark Forbes photo ∙ Susie Lowe

As hospitality events and sales manager for the Forth Floor restaurant, brasserie and bar at Harvey Nichols, no two days are ever the same for Mark. Organising anything from bespoke birthday celebrations to big store events, he spends his days surrounded by luxury goods and fine dining. What gives Edinburgh its edge? It’s a thriving cosmopolitan city with charm, character and history. During festival time it turns into this big ball of energy with so many interesting and unique venues opening their doors. Your preferred areas in Edinburgh? Leith has a brilliant mix of people from all walks of life. Which area of Edinburgh best reflects your personality? The New Town. I have to be smart for work and I like to look good, but underneath I’m pretty laid back, always up for a party and meeting new people. Where in or around the city do you go for a quick escape? South Queensferry. Lunch overlooking the Firth of Forth on the terrace at Orocco Pier is hard to top.

Around the city - Where you’ll find me: Dining out: Timberyard. Enjoying a coffee: Café Renroc on Montgomery Street. Doing business: Harvey Nichols.

STYLE

Sarah Connelly photo ∙ Susie Lowe

Sarah Connelly is the owner of Odyssey Boutique on William Street, a beauty and lingerie haven that stocks exclusive lines from brands including Stella McCartney. Here she shares her style secrets with i-on. I’d describe my style as… versatile. I walk everywhere so have to be practical. But I love to dress up and look smart too. It’s not unusual for me to change once or twice a day. My favourite place to shop in Edinburgh is… Thistle Street. From jeans that are long enough for me at ALC to unique casual wear at Kakao by K and gorgeous special occasion pieces at Jane Davidson, the street has everything. The person whose style I most admire is… Gwen Stefani – she has perfected glamorous tomboy style. I’ve got a thing about… Diane von Furstenberg. I love her designs and attitude and find her inspirational on so many levels. I’m trying to… always think positive. Once you start, you can’t stop. It’s infectious.

BEAUTY

Jo Mancini

photo ∙ Susie Lowe

Jo has been in the beauty business for the past five years and opened her own business, JM Waxing, in November 2014. Located within Dickson Reid hair salon on Frederick Street, she specialises in Lycon Hollywood and Brazilian hot waxing, HD Brows, Shellac and Vinylux nails. Hair, make-up or skin? What comes first in your opinion? Skin everytime - how can we expect our make-up to sit perfectly if we don’t treat our skin correctly. What’s your signature scent? Neroli Portofino by Tom Ford. It’s very light and reminds me of holidays in Italy. What’s your favourite salon treatment? HD Brows, I love keeping my brows under control and looking defined. My top beauty tip is… always exfoliate a day or two before any waxing appointment to minimise any ingrown hairs. Your wax will last longer too. My hero beauty product is… Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream, it’s a miracle product.

love a massage. In fact, I can’t get enough of them and I've been fortunate enough to sample some of the most amazing massages all over the world. However, in recent years my favoured hot stone massage has been a bit of a let down, partly due to the techniques and perhaps partly because I’ve become too difficult to impress. Whatever the reason behind it, after a busy festive period and even busier January at work, the thought of a relaxing back massage with a warming twist was a welcome one. Created 10 years ago by Clare Johnston, the owner of Moi beauty in Morningside, the Moi Back treatment has become one of the salon’s signature body treatments and includes exfoliation followed by a deep massage using essential oils. Ensuring your back gets all the TLC it deserves, a warm paraffin wax is then applied to soothe and to allow the oils to penetrate deeply into the skin while you’re treated to a heavenly head massage. Deeply relaxing and great to relieve tension, I left the salon feeling lighter and brighter with only one thing on my mind – when to go back. Hot stones, you have a serious competitor and this is one massage that will remain in my little black book. Moi Back Treatment is priced at £47 for 40 minutes. A course of six treatments is available for £235. Moi, 28 Comiston Rd, EH10 5QE, Tel: 0131 447 6611, www.moibeauty.co.uk.

IS A PRE-NUP ON YOUR “TO DO” LIST BEFORE YOU SAY “I DO”?

H

istorically, pre-nuptial agreements were somewhat of a “taboo” subject, but they are becoming increasingly popular in Scotland with many books and wedding magazines regularly posing the question: “Do you need a pre-nup?” Nowadays it not unusual for brides and groomsto-be to consult solicitors in advance of their wedding day to discuss whether or not they should have a pre-nuptial agreement put in place. Many believe that pre-nuptial agreements are only for the rich and famous, or for those who think that they are marrying a potential “golddigger”. However, pre-nuptial agreements are for anybody who wishes a degree of certainty in relation to what will happen to certain assets in the event of a future separation. By having a pre-nuptial agreement, it is not an acknowledgement that you (or someone else) believes that the marriage is destined to fail. It is a form of financial planning and asset protection. Some view it akin to an insurance policy – it is hoped that it will not need to be relied upon but it is in place in case you do.

If you are considering whether to enter into a pre-nuptial agreement then seek legal advice from a specialist family law solicitor well in advance of your wedding so that you can make an informed decision as to whether you need to put it on your “To Do” list before you say “I do”. Simpson & Marwick are specialist divorce and family lawyers. Our family law team recognises that families require solutions which are as individual as the families themselves. We offer common sense advice in a sensitive way and always attempt to resolve matters for our clients as cost effectively, efficiently and constructively as possible.

BODY SCULPTING

How we can help make sure that your dream dress fits like a dream…

Y

ou want to feel as amazing as you look on your big day – and feeling confident can play a real part in that. With form fitting gowns still a key trend for 2015, it’s possible that even a mini-muffin top can feel like a far bigger problem than it really is; especially as some areas of fat can be hard to shift through diet and exercise alone. The good news is that Face & Body can help you shift the stubborn areas of fat that even the healthiest of lifestyles can’t. Great results without surgery Unlike lipo, modern body-sculpting treatments are relatively pain-free and require little or no downtime. Both CoolSculpting and Aqualyx treatments enable you to target specific areas of stubborn fat and give results that are comparable to those you could expect from surgery. Aqualyx is an injectable treatment that helps to permanently destroy fat cells in the treated area. If you don’t like the idea of injections CoolSculpting may be for you. As the name suggests, the treated area is chilled down to a temperature that permanently destroys the fat cells.

You’ll need to plan ahead with both of these treatments as the results aren’t instant, but in a matter of months those unwanted inches will melt away as your body eliminates the broken down fat cells. Look and feel FAB FAB Inch Loss offers faster results – you may see a difference right away – and if your dress is already a good fit but you’d feel comfortable if it was a little looser, a few treatments in the weeks before the wedding should be enough to help you feel fabulous.

e met eight years ago at a friend’s house. The following evening everyone partied together at the old Cavendish nightclub and the rest, as they say, is history. “He proposed seven years later on a surprise pampering weekend at Stobo Castle. He asked me during a walk through the Japanese Water Gardens under a rainbow – it was perfect. “Planning the wedding within a year was quite straightforward. We had a good idea of what we wanted because we’d talked about it even before the proposal, or perhaps I talked at Graham… Either way, we both wanted something quite laidback with lots of personal touches. We also wanted it to be fun and bright which I think we achieved through the flowers and different coloured dresses for my four bridesmaids. “We chose Kirknewton House Stable as the venue, on the outskirts of the city. You simply pay for the venue and organise the rest yourself. It was quite a lot of planning but something we both really enjoyed. “To set the atmosphere for the 130 guests we had the Cairn String Quartet play during the ceremony and drinks reception and in the evening we had a band called Fudge

Machine. They were both excellent and added to our day. I walked down the aisle to Pachelbel’s Canon in D – I’ve always loved the music and thought it would be beautiful to walk down the aisle. When we were signing the register, I surprised Graham by getting the wonderful string quartet to play the Ghostbusters theme tune. It was the first song we ever danced to together and I knew Graham would appreciate it. Graham chose Higher and Higher by Jackie Wilson for the first dance which was a great upbeat tune and added to the amazing evening with all our family and friends.”

Our favourite things “We loved the personal touches. We kept the string quartet a surprise for people which was fun, obviously Ghostbusters went down a treat with Graham and our guests. The ceremony itself was serious when it needed to be, but because we had a lot of input into what was said

it had a lot of funny, touching moments. One of our good friends Lee made our wedding cake and it was wonderful. She put a lot of thought into how it would look and in the end created a quirky Lego cake because Graham loves his Lego. It was delicious and looked amazing too.”

Simmone and Al Fox Married on 01 June 2014 at Carberry Tower

“W

e have a lot of similarities. For a start we were born on the same day, the same year too. On our birthday in 2013, after two years together, Al got down on one knee and popped the question at the top of The Scott Monument. We married 18 months after the proposal. “Finding the venue was thankfully quite simple. Our good friends Stephen and Heather offered us their beautiful home, Seton Castle, which made it possible to bring all our wedding party and family and friends from abroad together for a full weekend of quality time. Seton Collegiate Church is situated on the grounds which was the most beautiful venue for our humanist ceremony. We then headed up to Carberry tower for the wedding breakfast and reception. “We didn’t have a theme as such although our day definitely revolved around soul music - Al and I first met

when I was DJing at the bar 99 Hanover Street so I suppose you could say our eyes met over the turntables. “I had a good idea about how I wanted my dress but couldn’t find anything similar so I opted for a bespoke silk dress with detachable train. Designing my own dress was stressful but I was really happy with the end result. On the actual day of the wedding my poor Mum froze when it came to lacing me into it but thankfully my knight in shining armour, chauffeur and friend Fraser Ewart came flying up the stairs to the rescue and saved the day. Yes, the chauffeur dressed me. “We had 85 guests join us on the day and another 100 evening guests. I would’ve loved to have all our guests at the whole day but unfortunately the church only holds 80 people. The amazing Maryam from Edinburgh’s Got Soul

Choir sang me down the aisle with a very soulful version of Evergreen by Barbara Streisand. I picked this for Al as it’s one of his favourite love songs and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. “We included lots of personal touches on the day. We wrote our own vows and our invites were 7’’ gold vinyl records. The A side plays a rare Curtis Mayfield track New World - We’re Gonna Make It while the flip is Crystal Clear Stay with Me. We used the left over records for the table plan and table names. Our favours were a CD of all our favourite songs, mixed by DJ Babes. The after dinner coffee was served with my Granny Black’s recipe for tablet lovingly made by my mum and Auntie Kath and cut into lovehearts.

Iain Hunter, Edinburgh’s well known Jazz Festival vocalist, mid That’s Life to surprise me with singing ‘That’s Fife’. I think our guests were as surprised and delighted as I was.”

Erica Ebner and Craig Murchie Married on 26 September 2014 at Hotel Cortijo Bravo, Nerja

“C

raig and I met online in April 2011, through Match.com. We exchanged a number of emails but because we were both going through busy times in our lives, the emailing fizzled out. A month passed and Craig spotted me across from him in Nandos. As we hadn’t exchanged numbers he renewed his match.com subscription and within a couple of weeks we had arranged to meet up. “We got engaged in June 2013 and the proposal came as a complete shock. It was Craig’s birthday and we had planned to go for a walk up Arthur’s Seat. Craig was very quiet but I never thought anything of it. When we reached the top, through the wind and rain, Craig got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. “I always knew I wanted to get married somewhere sunny but it wasn’t until we were over in Nerja, Spain, visiting my dad that the idea of having our wedding there came about. We met with a local wedding planner and after visiting Hotel

66 | I-ON WEDDING SPECIAL Cortijo Bravo we knew instantly that it was the one. Situated high up in the hills and surrounded by lemon groves, the views and grounds were beautiful. “We had 42 guests at the whole day, two bridesmaids, two ushers and one best man. We stuck to a colour scheme of cream and pale peach to reflect the vintage feel of the venue and keep things simple. “I walked down the aisle with my dad to my favourite song, A Thousand Years by Christina Perri and then after the ceremony we played Signed, Sealed, Delivered by Stevie Wonder. We wanted something fun and it certainly got the guests dancing. Our first dance was to Michael Jackson and Justin Timberlake’s Love Never Felt So Good. We had a little dance routine which Craig finished off with his famous back drop where he falls back onto one hand. It was so much fun. “We had a few hiccups - our photographer and makeup and hair artist cancelled at the last minute but we got replacements so it all worked out. Looking back we wish we hadn’t stressed so much about little things. The best advice I could pass onto other brides would be to try not to lose sight of the most important thing, which is that you are getting married to the person you love. All you need is friends and family to have a great party.”

Our favourite things ”The whole day was perfect, but having all our loved ones there with us made it the most memorable day. We wanted a relaxed feel to the day, and the DJ captured that perfectly with chilled background music throughout the day and a disco in the evening. To keep the Spanish theme, we gave fans to our guests to keep them cool in the sun and at the end of the night we had a LED balloon release which was magical.”

DINNER @ CHARWOOD RESTAURANT & BAR WHAT: A grill house and pizzeria restaurant and bar in Fairmilehead. WOULD SUIT: Families, couples and groups of friends. PRICE RANGE: From £7.95 to £25 for mains. words ∙ Sarah Johnston ∙ photos ∙ Susie Lowe

I

’ve been an EH10 girl all my life. Born, raised and educated in this postcode, it’s most definitely my home. It’s hard to leave - especially when it also houses some of the capital’s most unassuming and impressive bars, restaurants and bistros. The latest addition to the EH10 culinary map is Charwood Restaurant & Bar, a stylish, family friendly and dog friendly bar and restaurant located in the Fairmilehead. Opened in 2014 by the owners of the award-winning Whiski and Whiski Rooms, Charwood Restaurant & Bar is becoming a top food destination. A style overhaul has transformed the interiors of what was once the Pavilion and Tusitala into a relaxing, warm and inviting space. The welcoming bar oozes atmosphere with

comfortable leather sofas, tartan soft furnishings and subtle Scottish soft interiors. The adjoining spacious restaurant is warm and inviting and, on the wet and windy Wednesday in January we visited, it was buzzing. Local provenance of fresh ingredients from artisans and suppliers is clearly important to Charwood Restaurant & Bar, and this is reflected in the appetising menu of hero brasseriestyle dishes. Starters include perfectly cooked haggis spring rolls served with a plum sauce, £6.50, and delicious prawn and teriyaki salmon skewers, £13.50. Our friendly and knowledgeable waiter helped our decision making with good recommendations. And so, we opted for a delicious prawn and crayfish cocktail in a Marie Rose sauce with pickled cucumber, £6.95, and hot smoked salmon with lemon curd

DINNER | 83 and toasted bread, £6.95. The prawn and crayfish cocktail was devoured in minutes and the hot smoked salmon was a big hit, the bitter lemon sauce contrasting well with the succulent salmon. Charwood has invested in a Josper Grill so we put it to the test and opted for a fillet steak, £25, which was 100 per cent Scottish beef, dry aged matured for 35 days. Served with crunchy hand cut chips and salad, the steak was wonderfully tender and bursting with flavour. To complement it a delicious Pinot Noir from Italy was enjoyed, £21.95 a bottle, from the impressive wine list. The restaurant is also home to a wood burning pizza oven so a hand-stretched wood fired pepperoni and jalapeno pepper pizza, £11.50, was also sampled. This was one seriously large and tasty pizza that ended up too much for us, so it was packaged up in a pizza box to take home. In the name of research, we left enough room for dessert and chose a moist and decadent chocolate and orange torte, £5.95, and refreshing lemon sorbet, £4.25, made by Di Rollo of Musselburgh. Great dishes executed really well, Charwood Restaurant & Bar deserves to fly its flag high in EH10’s culinary map. LUNCH @ SERRANO MANCHEGO

WHAT: An authentic tapas bar in Leith. WOULD SUIT: Anyone that enjoys sharing quality Spanish food. PRICE RANGE: From £4.40 for patatas bravas to £17 for a platter of hand carved jamón iberico de bellota. words ∙ Nicky Howden ∙ photo ∙ Susie Lowe

A

good, authentic tapas experience in the UK is hard to find so we were delighted to come across the (newish) Serrano Manchego on Leith Walk; a stylish but not try hard tapas bar kitted out with brick walls, wooden tables, an open kitchen with legs of serrano ham hanging high, and large windows to watch the world go by. Together with friendly staff (mostly Spanish) and a crowd of lunchtime diners with carafes of wine, cañas Alhambra and sharing platters, it wouldn’t be out of place in one of the lanes off Madrid’s Plaza Mayor. The menu includes lots of popular tapas dishes like traditional Spanish tortilla, £4.50, moreish Serrano and Manchego (that’s Spanish ham and cheese if you’re wondering) croquetas, £5.20, and garlic and chilli prawns, £6.50. Portion sizes are on the generous side so five dishes between two, with a side of bread and olive oil, £1.50,

was plenty for us. Ingredient wise we’re talking all things Spanish, from the cured meats to the cheeses, there’s a real appreciation for only the finest produce. And whatever you do make sure you try the churros and chocolate, £3.50, for dessert. Sweet and calorie laden, it’s like dunking tasty fried doughnuts into a thick, warm chocolate sauce. Serrano Manchego is a great place to hang out with friends. Go midweek to take advantage of the lunch express menu, which includes the daily stew and one tapa for £7.50, or make sure you’re there early to bag a table at weekends. Family friendly until 9pm, this is about good quality food and drinks in a relaxed atmosphere. Serrano Manchego, 297 Leith Walk, EH6 8SA, Tel: 0131 554 0955, serranomanchego.co.uk.
