TALKING ABOUT Apple’s newest products words ∙ Graeme McNaull

I heard Apple release some new must-have items this month. is that true? Sure is, Tim Cook took to the stage at the technology giant’s Spring Forward event and announced the company’s first, and eagerly wearable device, the Watch, and a new MacBook. They also announced ResearchKit, an iOS platform that lets researchers use opt-in data to aid medical discoveries. What’s so special about the watch then? Coined as the most personal device they’ve ever created, this is Apple’s first attempt at breaking into wearables. Designed to work in parallel with your iPhone (5 and above) and controlled via the crown scroll wheel and by touch, you can use it to answer/make calls, send/receive text messages, receive notifications, track your fitness and, if the rumours are true, even unlock your hotel room door wirelessly using built in NFC technology – specially designed apps will be coming in abundance. You can also use it to tell the time, but that’s boring. Sounds cool, what about the MacBook? The new super-minimalistic notebook has shed 47 per cent of its weight and 30 per cent in thickness compared

to the Air and weighs in at just 2lbs making it the “thinnest and lightest Mac ever”. You will immediately notice the colour options now emulate the iPhone/iPad line-up; Silver, Space Grey and Gold, the crystal clear retina display, ‘reinvented’ keyboard, a responsive Force Touch trackpad and no fan. Why are the products being released in the same month? Apple have been under scrutiny over the last 12-18 months with some claiming they have stopped innovating. These two releases should halt those accusations, at least for the time being. Ok, I want them both. Where can I get them? The watch and MacBook will be available for pre-order from 10 April online at Apple.com/uk. Price wise you’re talking from £299 for The Sport Watch (there are three watch designs and two sizes available) up to a princely £13.5k for the 18-carat gold edition. The MacBook starts from £1,049. For more information visit the Apple store, 10 Princes St, EH2 2AN, Tel: 0131 242 8200.

JAMES BAY words ∙ David Pollock

A

t time of writing, it’s only been a few hours since James Bay walked offstage at the Brit Awards, having collected the ceremony’s Critics’ Choice award for 2015. Nobody remembers the kid in the hat with the long hair, of course – they only remember the sound going a bit funny for Kanye and that unfortunate but iconic tumble taken by Madonna. Despite the public’s ignorance of him, though, receiving said award, as well as taking second in the BBC’s Sound of 2015 poll, suggests the right people have got his back. In fact, when US financial magazine Forbes takes notice (they noted his “strong social growth” and said he has a “40

per cent chance of hitting the Billboard 200 this year”), you feel that money will be made somewhere down the line. Yet the critical consensus has by no means fallen into line, with the Guardian’s Mark Beaumont describing him as “the sound of the UK’s once-trailblazing pop culture grinding to a halt”. Which seems a bit harsh, considering Bay is treading a path which many have used before. Raised in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, and educated at Brighton Institute of Modern Music, Bay shares much in common with artists like George Ezra, Hozier and Paolo Nutini, in that he’s a young guy (he was born in 1990) whose voice far outweighs

MUSIC | 17 his years in the maturity it conveys. On songs like the sparse quasi break-up ballad Let It Go and the jaunty indie-gospel of Hold Back the River, his reedy vocal merges a confident country twang with a sensitive quaver in the top notes. He can write a decent song and carry it off vocally too. Given his style, it’s no surprise to learn that his debut album was recorded in Nashville with sometime Kings of Leon producer Jacquire King, although he’s got a way to go if he wants to catch up with the Followill family in terms of filling arenas. At the moment his success is theoretical rather than actual, despite all the accolades, and Bay is the kind of artist who appeals to an audience which wants to see him prove his ability on stage. In which case, venues the size of those he’s playing on this current UK tour provide a perfect opportunity for him to showcase his work. Whether he’s playing the segment of his show with a full band or striking out on his own with just an acoustic guitar, it might well be more likely to strike a chord in venerable surroundings like those of the Queen’s Hall rather than cavernous amphitheatres such as the Hydro for which he’s surely being groomed. James Bay plays the ABC, Glasgow, 14 April; Queen’s Hall, 15 April; T in the Park, Strathallan Castle, 15 July. The album Chaos and the Calm is out now on Republic.

STYLE

Chris Mclennan photo ∙ William Dickson

Chris hails from Aberdeen and moved to Edinburgh nine years ago for university. Since then he‘s changed career path, honed his cutting skills as a hair stylist and opened Ishi Hairdressing in Marchmont and Hanover Street. Here he shares his top grooming tips with i-on. I’d describe my style as… smart/ casual but slightly risqué. I like to dress according to my mood and what I’m doing that day. My favourite place to shop in Edinburgh is… Hackett on George Street. They offer classic and stylish clothing in quality fabrics that work well for casual or formal wear. Whose style do you most admire? ASAP Rocky because he’s a fashion risk taker, Mariano di Vaio for his simple and minimalistic style and David Beckham because he’s moved with the times and always looks great. Beards, moustaches or clean shaven? It depends on the individual. Personally I prefer the short stubble beard look. My grooming essentials are… Chanel Bleu or Dior Sport EDT, Dermalogica active moisturiser, Sebastian Craft Clay for the refined yet messy hair look, Sebastian Dynamic for that straight out of bed hair look and The Body Shop coconut butter.

FOOD

Diego Requena photo ∙ Susie Lowe

As the director of food and beverage at Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh, Diego oversees the restaurants Galvin Brasserie De Luxe and The Pompadour by Galvin, Peacock Alley and the Caley Bar. Here he shares his passion for food with i-on. Your signature dish at the restaurant? Lasagne of Berwick crab with shellfish bisque. The delicate crab and scallop mousse is a great partner for our homemade pasta and I love the intense flavour of the accompanying bisque. What are you most likely to eat at home? I grew up in the south of Spain so if I’m in the kitchen, it is normally gazpacho, calamares or Spanish omelette. You’re off work, where have you always wanted to try for food in Edinburgh? Harajuku Kitchen. Despite hearing very good reviews about the Japanese restaurant, I’ve yet to try it. If you could invite five famous people, living or dead, to a dinner party, who would they be? Pablo Picasso, for an insight into his mind and creativity. Spanish flamenco artist Camaron de la Isla and Slash to combine my two favourite music styles. Oenologist Alvaro Palacios to provide the wine and fashion designer Alexander McQueen for a touch of style.

“D

uring the first few months of pregnancy I had some off days, almost like I had a hangover (without the night out), but after the first trimester I felt brilliant. Towards the end, I did suffer some back pain but massages in the salon, Moi Beauty, really helped. “The birth more than made up for the trouble-free pregnancy, though. I went into labour one week early and 36 hours later, Thomas was born by an emergency C Section. However it is true what they say, you do forget. Greg had to fill me in on parts and we both now only have lovely memories. “The biggest surprise has been how one little guy can make two grown adults laugh so much. He definitely has the whole family wrapped around his little finger. I didn’t think it was possible before to survive on such little sleep and still be so happy. Before having Thomas I was probably a bit of a workaholic. The salon came first and I seemed to always be there. Not being able to drop everything and go into work has been a learning curve and juggling family and work life is a job in itself, but it’s all worth it. “Having a child has changed the way I think about childhood memories. We're creating Thomas's memories so I want to make them good ones. I’ve loved every stage, watching him grow from a baby to a little boy with a big personality. I still pinch myself.”

When we’re out and abo ut we love taking Thomas to Cramond to play in the parks, Craigie’s Farm is great in the summer and the Chamber Street museu m is a fab day out. For soft play Tiki Tots in Morningside has it just right in my eyes. It’s brilliant for all age s, have a different selectio n of toys and a lovely café for adults and kid s. When Thomas was a baby we would go for tea at the Fountain Bar who were brilliant with us. Now he’s old er you can’t beat Pizza Express. THAT’S ART | 29

T

he art world can be intimidating, especially if you can’t reel off the right names, techniques or movements. But, it needn’t be. All it comes down to is a matter of personal taste, an appreciation of artistic expression and, in short, whether you like something or not. One American artist who wasn’t afraid to think outside the box is Roy Lichtenstein. Famed for his bold, graphic paintings of comic strip cartoons, he challenged the traditions of fine art to become one of the leading figures of the Pop Art movement that emerged in the mid-1950s. If you’re not familiar with his work, get ready to acquaint yourself with some of his striking large-scale works currently on long term

loan from the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation in New York to the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. “Lichtenstein was fascinated by the key ingredients that create a work of art – line, colour and form – and how they are arranged on a surface,” explains Lucy Askew, senior curator at Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. “He’s important because his art raised questions about the very nature of picture making in fine art, and how images are consumed in our everyday world. “At the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, we hold two prints and an important painting entitled In the Car, 1963, by Roy Lichtenstein. Acquired by

30 | FEATURES

the Gallery in 1980, it’s one of the artist’s early Pop Art paintings and arguably one of the masterpieces of our collection. By placing this iconic painting in context with other works by Lichtenstein related to Pop Art, the new Artist Rooms collection enables us to bring together lesser known themes and motifs that preoccupied the artist during his career.” By combining simple blocks of colour with black outlines and Benday dots (a system used in newspaper printing), Lichtenstein created a distinctive style and highly stylised images. He brought everyday images found in advertisements and cartoons into fine art and like fellow contemporaries, he made a huge impact.

So can his work be compared to anyone else? “Lichtenstein’s work has affiliations with many artists who were also associated with Pop Art”, says senior curator Lucy. “For example, in his use of signage, text and advertising imagery, Lichtenstein’s practice has parallels with that of Andy Warhol who famously made paintings of Campbell’s Soup Cans. Links could also be made between Lichtenstein’s use of cartoon imagery and the art of the Edinburgh-born artist Eduardo Paolozzi who used imagery from comic books in his works.” Dynamic, bold and vibrant, 17 large scale prints, two iconic paintings and a unique wall relief lent from Tate’s collection will all be on show at Modern One.

hen Jane Davidson first burst onto Edinburgh’s independent fashion boutique scene, it was 1969 and the dream was to bring British designers to the Edinburgh streets. Setting up shop in the Grassmarket, the store was attached to an old Church with an interior imitating a French salon. A trailblazer for exclusive fashion brands, rails were adorned with Scottish one-offs including Jean Muir, Ossie Clark and Jean Varon. Now located in a Georgian Townhouse on Thistle Street, the boutique spans four floors and has maintained its

forward-thinking ethos by becoming the first to bring Jimmy Choo, Chloe and Roland Mouret to Scotland. Now run by Jane’s daughter, Sarah, the designer haven has moved with the times by also offering an online shopping experience and a casual wear collection that sits alongside the most covetable evening wear.

TRIED AND TESTED

Wrinkle reducing injections words ∙ Holly Mckay

W

rinkles and the elimination of them are big business but if the thought of wrinkle reducing injections intrigues you but also makes you apprehensive, then you’re not alone. Now in my 30s, frown lines on my forehead have become my bugbear and something I’ve long wanted to do something about. Anti-ageing creams just weren't cutting it, but injectables made me nervous. However, when I heard of Dermalclinic, an award-winning clinic in Morningside with a secret anti-ageing weapon fondly known as ‘Mrs BTX’ by her regulars, I decided to get the lowdown. Wrinkle Reducing Injections - also known as Botox, Azzalure or Bocouture amongst others - work by blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to the muscle preventing a normal muscle contraction from taking place. It’s vital to pick your practitioner carefully because it is a medical prescription procedure so if you’re thinking of taking the plunge make sure you choose a good, respected clinical environment. I was in safe hands with Jackie, an experienced nurse and advanced practitioner and trainer. Armed with the facts, I took the plunge and booked the treatment for the following week.

On the morning of the procedure Jackie recapped everything we’d previously spoken about in the consultation and provided instructions for aftercare – no rubbing of the treated area for 48 hours or eyebrow threading for two weeks. Then, she got to work. The injections were quick, painless and just five minutes later, it was all over. The Results: They say it takes about two weeks for the toxin to get to work but for me it was about one week. Admittedly I did obsess over the area for the first few weeks worrying something might go wrong, but I soon got used to it and for the months that followed my forehead was undoubtedly smoother, plumper and line free. Now nearly three months on, the effects are starting to wear off and I miss my youthful brow. Mrs BTX can expect another visit… Wrinkle reducing injections start from £195 at Dermalclinic. For a free consultation Tel: 0131 447 2642 or e-mail: info@dermalclinic.co.uk. Dermalclinic, 21-31, Church Hill Pl, EH10 4BE, www.dermalclinic.co.uk.

Colour Focus

Make like Cara Delevingne in the new Topshop campaign (pictured) and update your look with a cool balayage colour. A directional alternative to highlighting, the gradual shading technique isn’t exactly a new concept but this season comes with a softer, more natural approach. So forget harsh two-tone effects and think of boho beauties Gisele Bunchen and Sienna Miller. “The beauty of balayage is that anyone with long enough hair can have it done,” explains Jason Miller of Charlie Miller hairdressing. “It also works on every hair colour. Colour wise, this season there will also be lots of chocolate and caramel colour going on. The more daring can combine mauve, soft pinks and violets too.” If you’re tempted for a change this season, we’d recommend booking an appointment with Hayley at the Charlie Miller salon in South St Andrew Street. As an expert in the technique, she knows exactly what she’s doing and there’ll be no harsh root line in sight. The Romantic Updo

Feminine and pretty, a romantic up do can really transform and add impact to your look. Soft and wearable, it’s a great look for a wedding or special event and can be polished and intricate with twists and ruffles like the Revlon Professional 2015 bridal look (pictured) or simply curled and swept-back for relaxed glamour. “Soft, romantic undone dishevelled rolls are the perfect up-do for any spring summer event,” says Marnie, owner of Hair by Marnie @ 7 West. “If someone prefers to wear their hair down, loose tousled waves with relaxed plaits is also right on trend and a great festival look. To get the look I’d recommend using Label M texturising volume spray and a conical wand.” Hair ups at the salon start from £25. Hair by Marnie @ 7 West, 7 West Register St, EH2 2AA, Tel: 0131 556 3243, www.hairbymarnieat7west.co.uk.

The Lob Factor

Edgy with a sophisticated definition: freshen up dead ends with the lob. Essentially a mid-length bob - think Taylor Swift, Fearne Cotton and, more recently, Cheryl Fernandez – the look is kept sharp and modern with long hair at the front and a gradient to the back, be that subtle or extreme. But don’t be put off if your hair is shaped around the front. Expert Danielle Carr recommends enhancing the look with hair extensions to add volume and even flashes of colour. “The front of people’s hair is usually the finest, especially when it’s been shaped around the face. To help combat this we use Great Length hair extensions and it can really transform a look,” she explains. “It means you don’t need to wait to grow it out. Typically we would do around 25 bonds at each side and it really adds to the look giving it a sharply defined, fuller edge.” Danielle Carr, 10 Comiston Rd, EH10 5QE, Tel: 0131 447 0256, www.daniellecarrhairdressing.com.

Short and sleek, the pixie crop is cut short at the back and sides to frame the face. A modern twist on the elfin crop that propelled Twiggy to fame, it’s now a favourite with the effortlessly cool Jennifer Lawrence. “The pixie crop is a versatile look that suits everyone and works well with a sweepy, asymmetrical fringe,” says Lee-anne McNaught, salon manager at Cheynes Hairdressing. “It can easily be transformed from day to night by adding texture with some tousled waves. Or for an edgier finish, insert a panel of soft muted mauve, minty green or pink colour underneath the top layer of hair to add depth.” Feeling brave enough for the chop? Book a consultation with Lee-anne to talk it through.

Fresh, subtle and tousled waves, there’s something irresistibly seductive about perfectly textured hair. “Loose movement and soft textures instantly make a short style look feminine and flattering,” says Bruce Masefield, Sassoon UK Creative Director. To get the look try using a medium size barrel tong and alternate the size of each section for a more natural result. Ruffle the hair through with a texturising product. Or leave it to the pros at Sassoon on Multrees Walk. The salon now offers a Blow & Style menu where you can choose from the Beach to Curly Wave finish to completely transform your own style look. Prices from £20.

The Boathouse, Dundas Castle words ∙ Stu Todd

I

t is hard to believe that only a short 20 minute drive from Edinburgh lies a truly idyllic getaway. Part of the Dundas Castle estate, the Boathouse is a five star, self-sufficient cottage situated on a secluded stretch of picturesque lake. It would be easy to mistake the view for a nature reserve, the abundance of bird life making this lazy stretch of water their habitat is spectacular. Favoured by newlyweds and couples looking for a romantic break, the picturesque cottage has views over the lake and has everything you could want for during the stay. From a fully fitted kitchen to comfortable sitting area, television and hi-fi, it’s all there and more. The interior is cosy and traditional with an open fire for chillier nights. The Boathouse works on a bed and breakfast basis so after a few hours of exploring the pretty grounds - it’s not difficult to see why Dundas Castle is a popular place to

get married, the stately home and gardens are gorgeous and stacked with history - and relaxing on the balcony, we freshened up before dinner at Dakota Bar & Grill. Cool and contemporary with exposed brick, brushed metal and exposed steel, the restaurant is just a short drive from the cottage and comes with a seal of approval from the Boathouse. Upon arrival we were greeted by a buzzing atmosphere and friendly staff who welcomed us with canapés and recommendations from the cocktail menu. The menu here leans towards a fine selection of steaks but locally and responsibly sourced fish was also prominent in the offerings. I opted for the Iron Steak, a fine cut of beef which is continually basted throughout the cooking process and served with capers and shallots. My partner ordered a Sirloin steak served with green beans and garlic. Both were

perfectly cooked to the requested medium/rare and were also served promptly, complemented by a recommended Argentinian Malbec. The next day we awoke to the arrival of a hand delivered continental breakfast in a lovely wicker hamper. Packed with locally produced milk, freshly baked bread, smoked salmon, cereals, fruits, cheese and meat, this was a very nice touch, as with all aspects of our stay the attention to detail was impeccable. After enjoying our beautiful breakfast in the company of the swallows, we sighed, packed and left the tranquillity behind.

andwiched between the Grassmarket and George IV Bridge, Candlemaker Row is easily overlooked but it has a character and history all of its own. In the 16th and 17th centuries a series of edicts from the city authorities required all the candlemakers to carry on their trade outside the main city boundary. Today the most obvious reminder of the craft is Candlemakers’ Hall. Built in 1722 as the place for their Incorporation to meet and conduct business, it’s just next door to the Greyfriars Bobby pub, and if you look closely you can just make out the candlemakers coat of arms above the door, with the very suitable motto ‘omnia manifesta luce’, which means ‘everything clearly seen’. The building was saved from demolition in the 1920s by city architect Ebenezer Macrae, and then restored again more recently by the Cockburn Conservation Trust. Of course the advent of gas lighting sounded the death knell for the candlemakers, and by 1847 the Incorporation

could only muster three members. Candlemaker Row became more associated with carriers and inns, and it must have become a place of great hustle and bustle. At the foot of Candlemaker Row today is the old Greyfriars Kirkhouse, now transformed as part of the Grassmarket Community Project. It is the surviving part of a tenement building built around 1800, to replace dilapidated houses like the Cunzie Nook, demolished in the Victorian period. A little mystery surrounds the demolition of its upper floors in the early 1900s, but it is suggested it was because of a murder committed there. If so, it wasn’t the only killing in the street. In 1810 Candlemaker Row was the scene of the murder of James Boyd – a notorious petty criminal. One night a Dr Symons was attacked outside an inn in the street by Boyd. Somehow the doctor fought him off, and pursued Boyd to the bottom of the street, where he stabbed Boyd with his sword. The ensuing court case was a sensation, but perhaps unsurprisingly the doctor was eventually found not guilty. David Hicks is communications manager at Edinburgh World Heritage, www.ewht.org.uk.

BEHIND THE DOORS

Colin Wong, creative director of award-winning kitchen and bathroom studio, Development Direct, talks about the secret to his success and why he wishes he could change the name.

Development Direct. Sounds like you bulk sell kitchens? No, definitely not. The company name is actually a legacy from where we began, which was to design kitchens and bathrooms for property developers but we are fundamentally an Edinburgh based design company, creating and installing carefully considered kitchens and bathrooms tailored to the needs and tastes of our clients, be they private individuals or large property companies. The company name doesn’t fully convey what we do now but we’re reluctant to change it as we’ve won so many national awards under the name. Tell us about the awards, then. We have won awards for both Kitchen and Bathroom designer of the year over the past six years at the KBB awards, Designer awards, and Neff awards. I’m proud to say we have won more design awards than any other independent kitchen company in the UK. What’s the secret to your success? I think it’s our passion for design. I don’t employ salespeople. We are a team of eclectic designers who aren’t afraid to challenge our customers to ensure we design the best spaces possible for them. It’s a different approach from the stereotypical kitchen and bathroom company. We cater for a wide range of budgets and take the same design-led approach for all our clients.

What’s the biggest design faux pas you see? We see a lot of kitchens fitted out with expensive products but lacking in space and flow. Too much furniture can destroy the natural energy and light and you end up with an unbalanced space. It all comes back to considered design. Do kitchens and bathrooms really add value to a home? I think if people can see themselves using a space productively and positively they buy into it. There is an emotional value to these areas in a house because they are fundamental to good living and very few prospective home buyers want the expense and trouble of immediately stripping out the kitchen and bathrooms. What design trends are big right now? Open-plan sociable living, mixing old with new. It’s important to hide away clutter so tricks like “hidden” walls work well to help a kitchen look less like a kitchen and more like great lifestyle furniture. What’s the best advice you’d give on designing kitchens and bathrooms? Don’t follow colour trends. It dates your room immediately and with good design and quality fittings, colour doesn’t need to be the main statement.

ven from a young age, Bryce McKenzie had early aspirations of how his dream home would look. “I grew up in Linlithgow in a converted farm cottage. Despite growing and extending over a number of years, only one room had a high ceiling so I think my earliest memory is of wanting to live in a town house or flat with traditional period features including high ceilings and elaborate cornices,” explains Bryce. Now the owner of his self-titled Edinburgh business, Bryce lives in a two bedroom, main door Victorian flat in Bellevue. When he first moved in the property had remained untouched for 20 years. Whilst starting from scratch might deter some buyers, this was ultimately what sold it to Bryce after a year of

property hunting. “As a designer this is exactly what you want. The house originally came with dark blue patterned carpets – I wasn’t sorry to change any of it. “I made considerable changes to the layout, reallocated wasted storage space and swapped the kitchen with one of the bedrooms so I could join the kitchen and sitting room by double doors, creating a much larger living space. Luckily, I could do all the planning myself; otherwise the process would have involved an architect, designer and project manager. “Whilst I didn’t experience any stress refurbishing the property, I did find the decision making harder than in my daily work with clients. Choosing the aesthetics and all the finishing touches took longer when I was deciding for myself but, from getting the keys, it was finished and ready to move into within 10 weeks.” The time invested was certainly worth it. The finished design is a stylish space retaining comfort and a welcoming feel throughout. “I like depth of detail in an interior; I think that’s where the warmth and soul come from in a home. I’m often told by friends that they’ve visited several times and still notice little things they

hadn’t previously seen. I love having people over to socialise and I’m not precious about the place,” says Bryce. Whilst he denies having a signature style, Bryce admits the film A Single Man by Tom Ford inspired aspects of his decorating. “I thought that the interiors of the lead characters’ homes were beautiful. There are definitely influences from that film in parts of my home. “Colin Firth’s character had a flat that was the perfect example of a man’s apartment in the 1960s. I also loved the colour palette of Julianne Moore’s character’s home. I emulated the neutral tones of this in some parts of my bedroom - my favourite room in the house because I like the combination of coral, orange and pink highlights over layers of patterns in neutral, with strong touches of graphic black and white,” explains Bryce.

Tom Ford aside, Bryce uses recurring techniques that can be seen throughout the flat. A mix of textures, colours and patterns has achieved a sophisticated finish, with great prominence placed on the quality of the interiors, like his bespoke sofas which he cites as his most worthwhile design investment. “They’re my own designs and I am, of course, a little biased but they’re incredibly comfortable and perfectly sized for the room. They get a lot of use but I know they will last forever,” says Bryce. “I would love to develop new ideas in my flat but it’s not practical to do that too often. My ongoing creative outlets are my work, my clients and my showroom. Really the only thing I’d love for my home which I don’t have at the moment is larger bedrooms with en suite bathrooms. Otherwise I’m quite content with everything the way it is.”

HALLWAY: The artwork of the horse was picked up at Panik Gallery in Killearn, Glasgow. The vases are sourced from antique shops in Edinburgh including The Thrie Estaits and Unicorn Antiques. The small wooden box was picked up on a trip to Tunisia. BEDROOM: My bed is a Hypnos one and is incredibly comfortable. I made an upholstered headboard to go with it - I do like comfort. The wallpaper is by Lisa Crossland from my own business.

WHAT: A new restaurant open all day on Broughton Street. WOULD SUIT: Couples, friends and anyone who loves great food. PRICE RANGE: From £3.95- £7.25 for starters, £10.95- £35.95 for mains and £3.65- £7.95 for desserts. words ∙ Melissa Jones ∙ photos ∙ Jaz Jagdeo

roughton Street is a favourite of mine for dining experiences. The street offers an eclectic mix of bars and restaurants and there’s often no need to go anywhere else for the perfect night out. The latest addition to the area is The Riparian Rooms, a stylish and relaxed restaurant and bar that is the new jewel in Broughton Street’s crown. Opened in January this year by Neil Robb and Lynne Ritchie, The Riparian Rooms sits on the corner of Broughton and East London Street in a building that needed a bit of tender love and care before they came along. In its former lives it was a launderette and Italian restaurant, but a complete restoration project has brought the venue back to life, incorporating stone work and wooden panels to give the restaurant a modern yet rustic makeover. A downstairs bar that looks like a vault gives the venue extra potential for a great night out.

For the record, a ‘riparian’ is a riverbank and refers to the old waterway that used to run down Broughton Street before joining with the Water of Leith. Although the river is now out of sight, the nod to Old Edinburgh gives The Riparian Rooms a homely feel. The menu celebrates the best in Scottish produce to, and when we visited on a cold and windy Sunday evening, it delivered just what we needed. First stop on the menu was a Curious Collins cocktail, a blend of Hendricks gin, St Germain elderflower liqueur, lemon juice, cucumber syrup and rose water topped with soda, £6.95. It was one of the finest gin cocktails I’ve had in Edinburgh. For our starters we settled on homemade soup of the day (creamy cauliflower), £3.95, and crispy pumpkin bites with blue cheese, sage butter and caramelised almonds, £6.50. For

mains we ordered layered confit of butternut squash, poached duck egg, wild Scottish mushrooms topped with truffled crispy potato, £12.95, and a breast of corn fed chicken, crushed potatoes, shredded greens with a tasty jus, £13.50. I was immensely impressed with the presentation of the meals, but also the flavours and how well they paired together. Nothing was amiss in either of the dishes, every element blended together to create great tasting food. Although it was a tough ask to fit in dessert as well, we managed with a selection of homemade sorbets, £4.65, and Heather honey cream, seasonal fruits and honeycomb, £4.95. The honeycomb dessert was divine in every sense of the word. Our helpful waitress had recommended the peanut butter parfait with roasted rum banana, £4.95, which we’ve kept in mind for our return visit. The Riparian Rooms, in all its forms, is a spot worth visiting time after time and takes the eating and drinking scene in Broughton to another level. LUNCH @ KYLOE

WHAT: A fuss free traditional roast in a top city centre steak restaurant. WOULD SUIT: Families or groups of friends. PRICE RANGE: Sunday roast with all the trimmings for four to five, £100. words ∙ Nicky Howden

S

ynonymous with Sundays is the roast dinner with all the trimmings. Nostalgic and mouthwatering, the great British roast with all the family is an institution. In our family, however, over the past few months a Sunday get together has fallen by the wayside. So, I decided to resurrect our family day and pulled the family together for a Sunday Roast at Kyloe. This isn’t a new offering at the top steak restaurant they’ve managed to bag awards for the Best British Roast Dinner - but it is a very clever one. A joint of succulent beef with all the trimmings, Yorkshire puds and roasted potatoes - without any of the fuss or mess in the kitchen - it’s no wonder the restaurant was buzzing on our visit. At Kyloe it’s all about quality beef and it shows. Our joint of Borders roast rib of beef, carved at the table, was succulent and flavoursome. The accompanying Yorkshire puddings (gloriously puffed-up and light, the way they should be), crispy duck fat roasted potatoes, pan gravy, roasted organic root vegetables, creamed cabbage and hot horseradish cream, all adding to the experience.

Included in the Sunday Roast £100 deal is dessert and whilst this changes on a weekly basis you can pretty much guarantee it will be a British classic. For us it was sticky toffee pudding, served with plenty of warm toffee sauce and scoops of ice cream to dish up as much, or as little, as we liked. Plenty for five, there was a rare silence at the table whilst everything was devoured. Delicious homemade food in funky, but comfy, surroundings, Kyloe has really hit the nail on the head with this Sunday offering encouraging you to share, linger and enjoy a lazy afternoon with friends or family. The only catch is that you need to book in advance (on the Friday before), but once you’ve got your booking and paid your 50 per cent deposit you can have the table as long as you like. We’ve already made our next booking.
