INTRODUCTION

i-on this month

If you’re not feeling particularly summery yet our aim is to help get you in the mood with our official Summer Edit. On page 30 we show why you don’t need to go stateside for your next road trip. Step aside Route 66 - we’re all about NC 500, the Scottish coastal route that was named among the world’s top six alongside the Amalfi Coast and the Great Ocean Road in Australia, no less. We also bring you some Scottish dates for the diary in our Checklist (p14) and all the latest news from our major cities in The Lifestyle Edit from page 72. We take a moment to talk fashion and Stella McCartney coming to Scotland on page 42 and press the reset button on your wellbeing with a detox break in North Berwick (p51). We also have barbecue recipes for when the sun shines (p68) and some tips on how to make the most of your outdoor space on page 54. If you’re a five star all the way kind of person, you’ll love the swoon worthy design hotels on page 61, hailed by pinkhouse.co.uk founder Emily Murray as the world’s most stylish.

Congratulations go to last month’s competition winner Keith Moodie who won two VIP tickets to T in the Park. This month one reader and guest will win a luxury two night stay at Mains of Taymouth Country Estate in Kenmore. Turn to page 10 for details on how to enter. Until next month, enjoy i-on. MUSIC

T

wo days earlier the Stone Roses will have unveiled the second stage of their epic comeback – and hopefully some more new material – at T in the Park, but for a slightly younger generation of fans who were hipsters in the 2000s, LCD Soundsystem might well have a greater claim on being the band of their generation. Formed and led by New Jersey boy turned native New Yorker James Murphy in 2002, the band released three albums, a bunch of EPs, remixes, B-sides and quality cover versions, played a legendary live set and then split in 2011 just when it seemed like they were really getting going. They even managed to do it amicably, with the statement announcing their final shows at Madison Square Garden saying “if it’s a funeral, let’s have the best funeral ever!” To those who had half an eye on what they were doing in the early days, LCD fitted easily into the Brooklyn based scene which was vaguely known as ‘punk-funk’ or ‘disco-punk’. But what’s more true is that they actually invented it and didn’t make any kind of fuss about doing so, like all true originals. Murphy had come to study in New York in the early ‘90s, had left his course and (unlikely but true) turned down the chance to write for the hit sitcom Seinfeld, and had spent the rest of the decade in a succession of unknown bands.

When he designed the PA for the group Six Finger Satellite, Murphy called it ‘Death From Above’, a name which was later to inform that of his label DFA. Their group, The Rapture, had a couple of indie hits, and then in 2002 LCD’s debut single Losing My Edge appeared on the imprint, a song which was ironically about Murphy’s fear that he wasn’t cool any more. Yet the first three EPs and 2005’s eponymous debut album were very much so, filled with tracks which married disco-house grooves with post-punk attitude. Daft Punk is Playing at My House might be the song which is familiar to most. Despite how well they suited the clubs – and few bands have done as much to break down the tired old divide between analogue and digital – the group provided maturity and introspection too, particularly on their later albums Sound of Silver (2007) and This is Happening (2010). They announced their return with the unlikely ballad Christmas Will Break Your Heart, released on Christmas Eve 2015, with their new dates and a planned fourth album an incredibly welcome gift to many. LCD Soundsystem play T in the Park, Strathallan Castle, near Auchterarder, Sunday 10 July. www.lcdsoundsystem.com.

AS AMERICAN AS THE FOURTH OF JULY, THE ROAD TRIP IS A PROPER INSTITUTION ACROSS THE POND; A RITE OF PASSAGE AND THE SUBJECT OF COUNTLESS MOVIES. BUT YOU CAN ENJOY A COASTAL ROUTE TO RIVAL ANY ON THE PLANET RIGHT HERE IN SCOTLAND. SO GOOD, IN FACT, THAT THE NORTH COAST 500 WAS RECENTLY NAMED AMONG THE WORLD’S BEST. HERE’S HOW TO DO IT IN SUMPTUOUS, SCOTTISH STYLE.

eginning and ending in Inverness, The North Coast 500 is a 516 mile circuit around the north coast of Scotland which, in our opinion, should be enjoyed at your leisure punctuated with Michelin starred pit stops and Instagram friendly scenery along the way. And every such journey should start with a full belly. If you can throw in a view for starters, better still. With a vista of the River Ness and Castle, the superb Kitchen Brasserie offers a great value lunch to prepare you for

a day on the road; try the pan-seared fillet of sea trout. Then, with driving gloves on, head west out of the city on the A832 for the first attraction on your five-day journey, Bealach Na Ba. Named ‘one of the best drives on the planet’ for good reason, the challenging Applecross road rises a few thousand feet with hairpin bends and breathtaking views – a keen driver’s dream. Your destination for the evening is the Torridon with a dram on arrival in their world famous whisky bar. If you’re clever you’ll have 31

Back on the A832 the next day, you’ll head north east towards Kinlochewe before joining the southern bank of Loch Maree and your first eye-candy pit stop for the day. Once your belly starts to rumble, push on to Gairloch for a spot of lunch at the Shieling Restaurant with panoramic views across the loch before bedding down for the night at The Pool House in Poolewe, a 300-year-old hunting and fishing lodge, transformed into a luxury B’n’B packed with character with plenty to do and some first class seafood. Day three is a great driving day; you’ll head north on the A832 again, tracing the coast and enjoying some of the best scenery on the route. First stop today is some otherworldly wilderness and the fascinating Bones Cave at Inchnadamph. Here you’ll find an eerie cave decorated with the

Pop into the renowned West Coast Deli for lunch, made with incredible local produce, but be sure to keep it light because tonight’s menu and lodgings come courtesy of Britain’s most northerly Michelin star at The Albannach. The menu changes daily, dependent on the seasonal produce available and the catchof-the-day, but rest assured, you’re in for a six course treat of magnitudinal enjoyment. Round the day off perfectly by taking in the sunset and mountain views from the hot tub on your private terrace in the Byre Suite. Kick off day four with some geographical discombobulation at Achmelvich Beach. Fashion’s champion F

rom eponymous labelled household names such as Christopher Kane, Jonathan Saunders and Holly Fulton, to the scores of graduates from Scotland’s top fashion institutions who go on to ace the behind-the-scenes roles which help shape the industry from the inside, Scotland is undoubtedly a nation capable of bearing fashionable progeny. A shame then, that London’s powerhouse scene is the ultimate draw for so many. What we need is someone to champion the home scene and celebrate all that’s great about fashion. Someone like Anna Freemantle Zee. The former model organises the Edinburgh International Fashion Festival, one of the country’s biggest celebrations of the industry which is now in its fifth year and taking place this month from 21-24 July at various venues throughout the capital. “I believe in Scotland, we’re still so unaware of all the talent and beauty we have on offer,” explains Anna. “The textile industry is huge here and fashion is merely an expression of this but we could improve by continuing to open our eyes and hearts to all the talent around us. When we set up the event I wanted to bring a focus to the industry and the high level of quality. We manage to draw some of

42

fashion’s biggest names thanks to the high level of networking offered, the beautiful scenery and the true concern for where the industry is heading and what can be done to change things.” “That’s one of the reasons we invited Stella McCartney this year, she’s the greenest label amongst the luxury fashion brands which goes along well with our focus on sustainability - and next to that she’s British Designer of the year. Her show, All Things Sustainable, is an exclusive and beautiful exhibition at the wonderful spa at Archerfield House in East Lothian on 22 July.” The festival begins with From Harris to Paris, a multi-dimensional exhibition which follows the journey of a garment from its Hebridean beginnings in the mills of Harris Tweed through to the ateliers of Paris. Other highlights include the Symposium with four panellists covering a dynamic subject range. Saskia de Brauw’s book launch for The Accidental Fold at The Royal Surgeons Hall, Edinburgh, and the foreign exchange maker’s market at the National Museum. SUMMER

saviours BEACHY WAVES SOUND GOOD BUT, IN REALITY, HOLIDAY HAIR IS USUALLY A LESS GLOSSY AFFAIR. SUSIE CORMACK BRUCE REVEALS HOW NOT TO LET THE SUN GO TO YOUR HEAD.

44

BEAUTY

I

can still remember my first ever holiday hair care lesson. I was 10 years old and on holiday in sunny Spain. Each day I’d sit on my lounger and watch, mesmerised, as a 50-something German lady went through an elaborate poolside routine of brushing, spraying, combing and oiling the ends of her waist length hair before sweeping it all into a towel and then, with a quick twist, transform that towel into a turban worthy of Joan Collins in her Dynasty days. It took her about 15 minutes, start to finish, every single morning and while her supersized sunglasses and turbaned look did receive startled stares for most of the day, by night it was her gorgeous, shiny waterfall of a mane that got the attention. As I sat twirling my crispy sunburnt curls I swore, when I grew up, I’d be just as meticulous. So that’s why I’m now about to embark on operation holiday hair repair and prepare in anticipation of the battering my hair will endure while abroad. First up will be a trip to the hairdresser for a quick trim followed by a hydrating in-salon treatment. For a truly bespoke treatment you can’t beat Kerastase’s Fusio-Dose. This haircare innovation allows stylists to custom blend treatments to target both a primary concern (i.e. lack of nourishment) and a secondary issue (i.e. loss of radiance). It’s also instant, meaning no extended stay at

the basin. If a salon visit isn’t an option, try using a creamy masque such as Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask, £7.65, or Kiehl’s Olive Fruit Oil Hair Pak, £26, once a week to boost moisture levels and keep hair hydrated. These masques can also double up as a super charged conditioner on the holiday itself. On the packing front, alongside my hat will be a reliable UV protector product. There are plenty to choose from, but Phyto PhytoPlage’s Protective Sun Veil, £15, is summer’s hottest. A sister product to Phyto's legendary glossy oil, this limited edition spray offers high sun protection in the form of an invisible, non-oily hair veil. A definite don’t-leavehome-without for chemically coloured hair as hot sun equals instant, often dramatic, fading. I’ll be leaving my usual shampoo at home and opting for a specialist shampoo such as Aveda’s Sun Care Hair and Body Cleanser, £18, or Wella SP After Sun Shampoo, £15, both formulated to remove chlorine, sea salt and sunscreen without stripping hair of moisture. Finally, multi-tasking oils such as Darphin’s The Revitalising Oil, £25, can be useful holiday companions, especially for skin glossing and dealing with frizz and split ends. Just don’t be tempted to use oils to soothe sunburnt skin or scalps as you may hinder healing by simply ‘sealing’ in the heat. Not a smart move or look. 45

no spills option Perfectly portable, crayon and stick cosmetics make ideal travel companions. Here are a handful of our favourites.

1 Clinique has led the way in crayon cosmetic innovation with its Chubby Sticks range. Latest addition is the oil-free Chubby in the Nude Foundation Stick which delivers sheer to medium cover and comes in 10 shade choices. £23. 2 Charlotte Tilbury’s Colour Chameleon crayons are infused with synthetic sapphire to enhance and add sparkle to your natural eye colour. £19. 3 Chanel’s Stylo Eyeshadow is a lightweight water-infused slick stick of colour that instantly cools and freshens lids. £23. 4 Benefit’s Watt’s Up Highlighter is champagne toned so doesn’t dull or look ashy on tanned skin. Looks great on cheek and collar bones and on the inner corners of the eyes. £24.50. 5 Bobbi Brown’s Art Stick will give you plenty to pout about. A lipstick and liner in one

(we’ve even used it on our cheeks), the 14 shades go from delicate nudes to punchy pinks. £20. 6 The colour pay-off from the Lipstick Queen range is excellent with the jumbo Chinatown Glossy Pencils a playful addition to your lipstick wardrobe. £22. 7 If you’re committed to contouring you’ll love Maybelline’s new Master Contour V-Shape Duo Stick. £6.99.

CASE STUDY Johnny lost 31kg in 14 weeks (4.5 Stone) I had always been overweight but in the last couple of years I reached more than 20 stone. I knew it had gone too far and it was time to do something about it. But I wouldn’t have been able to lose the weight without the Alevere Weight Loss Therapy and the help of everyone at Dermal Clinic. The support I received from the staff was crucial, they were extremely professional but also very pleasant and always did their best to make me feel comfortable. I feel absolutely fantastic. It has not only boosted my confidence but dramatically improved my health. My cholesterol levels have dropped from 5.0 to 3.3. I have so much more energy and in general I feel much healthier. I honestly can’t believe the transformation and how quickly it has happened. People have been so complimentary; I actually get sick of hearing how different I look now. aking big changes – or even knowing where and how to start - can seem overwhelming, but Scots celebrity nutritionist Amanda Hamilton’s new Scottish detox retreat ensures it’s very simple and strangely enjoyable. Famed for her detox programmes around the globe with an A-list following including Kate Moss, Amanda Hamilton has brought her acclaimed retreats back to Scotland. And they’re in high demand. Located at the Macdonald Marine Hotel & Spa in North Berwick, East Lothian, the monthly detox retreat offers a juice detox weekend or five day juicing break, hosted by Amanda herself. calories, I was initially worried I would be starving. But, surprisingly, I never felt hungry and, despite only consuming 600 calories a day, my appetite was satisfied on juices, smoothies, digestive boost drinks, evening broths and warming night-time fruit teas – each juice promoting the body’s healing and helping to reduce weight. As Amanda explained, a juice fast intensifies the body’s detoxification process, declogging it of toxins and waste matter that stop the body working effectively and leave us drained, tired, frequently ill and overweight. Fresh juices made with predominantly vegetables are a highly effective fast track way for the body to absorb and process key vitamins, minerals and plant chemicals that are

In one weekend, I lost 4lbs and came home rejuvenated, alert and ready to tackle my health head on crucial to health. And so, the juice fast offers the body a break from normal digestion that allows the body to catch up and work on detoxing. The daily workshops and education seminars on subjects such as weight management, stress and nutrition were fascinating and a real eye opener on where I had gone wrong. Being able to talk to Amanda and have personalised advice and guidance was invaluable. She also took detoxers on guided walks and participated in the daily ViPR beach workouts and Tabata fitness classes. The break also included a detoxifying spa treatment using Ishga products and follow on personalised menu plans. And it has to be said, having the Macdonald Marine Hotel & Spa as your base made detoxifying even easier, offering luxury surroundings as well as a thermal suite and gym. In one weekend I lost 4lbs and came home rejuvenated, alert and ready to tackle my health head on. A weekend retreat starts at £395 pp sharing a standard room or £265 for a non residential option. TOP FIVE Amanda Hamilton shares her tips to juice the right way Don’t go it alone. Switching to a juice and broth diet is challenging and there’s a lot of preparation and cleaning to do. If you juice at home, choose fruits and vegetables that have a high water content to get the most yield out of your shopping basket. When juicing vegetables, start with vegetables that you already enjoy and slowly introduce new ingredients. If aversion kicks in because a celery juice churns your stomach, then the juicing habit simply isn’t going to stick. Try to have a mental and body detox. There’s nothing like a bit of time out and perspective if you want to kick start healthier habit. If you want to get the benefit of a nutrient-dense green juice, add ¼ to ½ lemon or lime to the juice to counter any bitterness.

Scaffa Home Garden Furniture

OUR UNIQUE SCOTTISH CLIMATE MEANS THAT WHEN THE SUN COMES OUT, WE WANT TO MAKE THE MOST OF IT. HERE’S HOW TO ENSURE YOUR EXTERNAL SPACE RISES TO THE CHALLENGE… Decluttering a garden may sound strange but it’s often necessary. Pull out those weeds, throw away tired or broken garden ornaments, cut back overgrown bushes and inspect and repair fences and gates. Painting will help fight exposure to the Scottish elements so get busy with the brush and tackle fences, walls, decking and sheds. If your external space is smaller then consider using lighter shades to reflect the natural light and help the area feel more spacious. Then add some sparkle by power washing or scrubbing the decks, paving, driveways, paths and patio furniture. 54

Despite our climate, most of us optimistic Scots love the idea of eating outside. If space and budget allow, install a covered area for the barbecue. That way surprise showers needn’t spoil the food (or the fun). Seating is also important for enjoying the sunshine but don’t feel confined to a traditional garden bench. Old tree stumps, railway sleepers and scaffolding boards can provide quirky furniture solutions. Visit scaffa.co.uk for some amazing handmade options of the latter or check out Pinterest for some ideas to go DIY. There are external lighting options aplenty, including solar or electric lights and candles. Light your garden at different levels from the ground up for a lovely overall effect. And when summer passes and it’s too cold to be outdoors? Survey your garden from the warmth of your home and enjoy the scene you’ve created. Sarah is a homedresser based in Aberdeen. Have you had the discussion with your parents about gifting you the family home? Is this something they should be doing?

Y

ou would have had to be living underground to not be aware of the fact that as a nation, we are all living longer. Current stats predict that by 2037 (only 20 years away) the number of Scots aged over 75 will increase by a whopping 86%1! So great news no? Well yes, but with that comes a variety of health, wealth and social issues. Planning for growing old or indeed encouraging your parents to is now critical in order to save money and future upset. For most of us the thought of the family home being sold to pay for care for one or both parents is quite a difficult and frustrating one. To put it into context, if a parent or loved one does need care at some point in the future, care home fees can range from £27,000 to £60,0002 annually! If your parents have assets worth £26,250 or more they are required to pay for their own care. Without forward planning families often have to rush the sale of the family home to help fund large care fees. Particularly upsetting when this potentially could have been avoided. childhood spent holidaying under canvas was intended to awaken in me an unflinching love of the great outdoors, a thirst for the intrepid and a healthy disregard of material possessions. Surprisingly, midnight floods and cold baked beans for breakfast had the opposite effect, leaving me fascinated by accommodation with lockable doors and noncollapsible floors. And so, as soon as I was old enough to choose my own holidays, I started seeking out the most stylish hotels the world has to offer. Because when it comes to escaping reality, there’s nothing like a truly gorgeous hotel. Here’s my selection of those hotels that’ll help you live your dream, whatever it may be… BEST FOR: Budget Cool MAMA SHELTER If you’re in Paris and serious about getting your hipster on, you need to head directly to achingly cool and surprisingly inexpensive Mama Shelter as fast as your Acne boots will carry you. ABERDEEN HEADS UP

Hot on the heels of Etape Caledonia, the North East of Scotland’s very own Quilter Cheviot Etape Royale will be taking place on Sunday 18 September. The challenging 100 mile circular route starts and finishes in Ballater (65 and 45 mile options are also available starting from Rhynie and Dufftown) and 10 per cent of the registration fee goes to support local charities along the route. To enter visit www.etaperoyale.com.

HERE COME THE GIRLS Up for a girls’ weekend in Aberdeen? Check out and check in at Skene House where you get more than a room; you get a whole apartment and right now they’re offering a special cocktail extravaganza. A three bedroom apartment (sleeping six) including cocktail making at Revolution and full Scottish breakfast for the morning after starts at just £65pp. For more information, visit www.skenehouse.co.uk/cocktails. 74

IF YOU DO ONE THING THIS MONTH Try Freakshakes, this summer’s messiest, most indulgent food trend. Originating in Oz, they are big-licks milkshakes with the volume turned up extra loud, overflowing with cream, sticky sauces and topped with an indulgent dod of sugary stodge. The Long Dog Café was the first to introduce Freakshakes to Aberdeen and are still the masters. We’re suckers for the so-wrong-it’s-right chocolate brownie version with toasted marshmallow and obligatory sprinkles. The Long Dog Café, 66 Claremont St, AB10 6QY, Tel: 01224 467979.

Spotlight on The Boozy Cow words Jodie Molyneux

S

ome days you want kale crisps and falafel, others you need meat. On those days, The Boozy Cow is the place to be. Having recently moved to the former home of Amicus Apple on Langstane Place, The Boozy Cow is loud, proud and unapologetically meaty. The venue’s look (and sound) is urban with polish; graffiti covers almost every surface with plenty of wistful-looking skeletons watching over you as red neon signs illuminate your table. You’ll even find Edgar Allen Poe’s poetry daubed on the walls. It’s undeniably cool, but not without a fun side, which you’ll find out on your way to the toilets. The menu is summed up best by the Boozy Cow website as “get stuck in: no plates, no cutlery, no wine glasses.” Boasting incredible beef and chicken burgers, stacked hot dogs, salads, slaw and veggie burgers. The sides are as tempting as the mains; chilli fries, fried pickles and popcorn chicken, and spending as little as £15 will leave you stuffed. The food here is pure Americana with few frills; orders arrive on a metal tray, cutlery is available on request, and kitchen roll sits beside the sauces already on the table, ready to mop up the eventual delicious, lip smacking mess. The Boozy Cow, 67 Langstane Pl, AB11 6EN, Tel: 01224 587717, www.boozycow.com. 75

MY STYLE, MY WAY The Little Magpie

Whenever we’re looking from some style inspiration we hit up Amy Bell’s AKA The Little Magpie - Instagram and voila, our next outfit quandary is solved. Here, the Aberdonian Insta Queen and blog star talks fashion.

How would you describe your style? Lazy. I love pieces you can just throw on and dress up with a few accessories. Whose style do you most admire? Generally it’s men's style; they've got that lazy dressing thing nailed. I love young Keith Richards and Mick Jagger's style. Are you an impulsive or considered shopper? Impulsive. I'm awful - I make promises in my head to try to justify impulse buys, like: 'I can always return it'. Since launching the blog do you feel pressured to always be Instagram ready? Most people who know me personally know that the Instagram looks are the rarity so I never feel pressurised to look ‘camera ready’. 76

What’s been your favourite recent look? I really loved the red and white striped two piece, seen here, that I wore in Miami. It matched the beach huts perfectly and, as a big fan of food, finding an outfit that made me look like a human stick of rock was a real highlight for me.”

DUNDEE CITY INSIDER Chris Van Der Kuyl photo Susie Lowe

D

undee is the birthplace of the Scottish games industry, with some of the world’s biggest titles starting here - including Lemmings and Grand Theft Auto. Within the industry, Chris Van Der Kuyl is helping to lead the way, a video games Bafta and a little game called Minecraft under his company belt - the fastest selling and most successful Xbox Live Game in history. Here, the games and technology entrepreneur tells us what he loves about the city he calls home. What gives Dundee its edge? The creativity and ingenuity of the people who live there. Home is where the heart is – how true is this statement for you? Dundee has always been home for me. I live in Broughty Ferry and lots of my friends and family are based in the city so that’s where it starts.

Earliest memory of life in the city? Probably walking to Glebelands Primary School along the Arbroath Road and the unique smells of the remaining Jute mills. Biggest change you’ve seen in recent years? Undoubtedly the Waterfront but that’s probably matched by the renewed optimism of the people who decide to make Dundee their home to build creative and innovative businesses. Drinks? OVD and coke in Clark’s Bar on a Thursday night for Pre-Production. Favourite shop? Rainbow Music, the original and best musician’s haunt on Cowgate. Favourite outdoor space? Baxter Park, especially brilliant since its Millennium makeover, and also the brand new Mary Slessor Gardens at the Waterfront; the recreation and destruction of The Royal Arch in Cardboard was genius. 77

BROUGHTY FERRY CALLING words Martel Maxwell

A

s a child, I would cry if our family holiday coincided with the Broughty Ferry Gala, a week long annual festival in the old fishing town on the outskirts of Dundee which is nothing short of magical. A regular event since the early 1900s, it is regarded as the foremost Summer community festival in Tayside. Now, as an adult with kids, I’m learning there’s plenty to keep us all happy. As tradition has it, the Gala Week Fete kicks off proceedings at Castle Green Park - this year on Sunday 03 July from 1pm. Thousands gather to drink (there’s an adult only beer tent), laugh, dance and be merry. The event is free - as many are throughout the week - with collection buckets for local charities. A large part of what makes the Gala special is its community spirit. Run by The Broughty 78

Ferry Traders’ Association, participating shops do quirky things like plant an odd object in their window display. Your job is to figure out what. A paintbrush in a baker’s window? A cherry in a clothes shop? Not as easy as and much more fun than it might sound. There are several events every day, including sand sculpture and pavement drawing competitions, quiz night, bonnie babies contests, pet show, antiques roadshow, family fun nights and much more. The setting couldn’t be better - expansive, beautiful beaches, fine cafes, restaurants, bars and boutiques. If it’s scorchio, you won’t want to leave. Broughty Ferry Gala Week runs from 03 to 10 July. For full listings visit www.cometobroughty.co.uk.

SPOTLIGHT ON The Tayberry words Martel Maxwell

While in the Ferry, you won’t beat the lunchtime view from the recently opened Tayberry restaurant. Overlooking the stunning Esplanade, with its rolling sand dunes and Silvery Tay across to Fife, locals might remember previous incarnations as Frasers and even L’Auberge - and hurray such a gem of a premise is no longer empty. I’d heard chef Adam Newth took pride in incorporating his local roots from nearby Arbroath into the menus - and my starter didn’t disappoint, a pretty dish that made the star of the show the flavour of Arbroath Smokie in a delicious broth, topped with perfectly cooked egg. My main course of pan roasted hake with crab bisque balanced perfectly the various components with a fine touch. With two courses for £18 and three for £22, lunch is great value - and they throw in the view for free. www.tayberryrestaurant.com.

OUR FAVOURITE FIND Snuggled within three pretty seaside cottages painted pink, lime and yellow, The Fisherman’s Tavern, or The Fish as we locals know it, has been offering a warm escape from the sea wind since 1827. Offering atmospheric low ceilings, a warren of cosy corners and a good old fashioned boozer, from 22 to Sunday 24 July it’s hosting The Ron Bonnar Beer Festival, complete with barbecue, bands and, you guessed it, beers. More than 30 cask ales sponsored by local businesses and regulars will be on offer, along with continental options and Scottish cider. www.fishermanstavern-broughtyferry.co.uk. 79

EDINBURGH MY STYLE, MY WAY Ellis Riley photo Susie Lowe

22-year-old politics student Ellis juggles studying with work at Size? footwear on Frederick Street. Here she talks personal style with i-on. Signature style: Androgynous and comfortable. If Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth and Bruce Springsteen had a baby, its style would probably reflect mine. I really love to shop in places like Focus on the Royal Mile. It’s a little independent skate shop that has some really cool printed t-shirts. The tee I’m wearing is a collab they done with Mogwai, and it’s one of my favourite shirts because it’s got that skate vibe. Style icon? My mum. She throws on jeans, a tee and a pair of Chucks and she’s good to go. When it comes to style I think it’s important to… know you look great. I work predominantly with men and their style has taught me to combine smart looks with a relaxed feel.

EDINBURGH LIVE

Max Meres selects his electronic music summer highlights

How to... GET OVER ANXIETY

words Rebecca Bonnington

Optimo returns to Summerhall’s Dissection Room in July for their second appearance this year. If you haven’t set foot in the venue, expect an immaculately lit cavernous space which makes for one of Edinburgh’s most dynamic dancefloors. Combined with the compellingly diverse musical tastes of Optimo, this should be enough to push even the more conservative clubbers into dusting off their dance shoes for a night filled with everything within the dance music spectrum, and much more. Also at Summerhall, Mount Kimbie make an eagerly anticipated return to Edinburgh this August. Such an innovating duo in electronic music would call for an equally iconic venue to play host to their live set, and the Dissection Room more than meets the cut. Blog: twistinmadison.wix.com.

Recent reports have highlighted increased anxiety amongst the population, more specifically women and people under 35. The good news is that there are simple, easy ways to overcome anxiety which don’t require a prescription or alcohol. Once you learn that you’re in charge of your thinking and your thoughts, you realise that anxiety is a product of your imagination concerning events that haven’t happened yet. If you’re going to make things up that haven’t happened yet, why not make them positive? There are some very simple techniques to switch off that constant chatter and the whirlwind of thoughts which relieve anxiety quickly and, with a little practice, can diminish the feeling entirely. Simply placing your tongue below the roof of your mouth, behind your top teeth and holding it there will create an immediate sense of calm. For more tips on overcoming anxiety contact Rebecca Bonnington, Tel: 0773 934084 or email rebecca@ rebeccainspires.com.

THE ART OF THE SELFIE words Ailidh MacLean

T

he selfie, in all its infectious and often carefully contrived glory, has exploded, holding planet Earth and all of us that inhabit it victim. From the ashes, a booming industry of gadgets and gismos has arisen helping us to present an enhanced version of ourselves that we are more than happy to show to the world. In fact the ‘selfie’, Oxford English Dictionary’s “word of the year” in 2013, currently makes up as much as 30 per cent of all photos taken by people aged 18-24. Celebrity culture could be said to have greatly aided the selfie’s acceptance into the mainstream. Having already conquered space and with the Queen known to feature in one or two, its pizzazz has endured for centuries in varying forms and shows no signs of slowing down. Complemented by the rise of social media, the influence of Generation Z and artists such as Ai Weiwei - who charted his arrest by the Chinese government via Instagram - the art of the selfie appears to be a recently modern phenomenon but it dates back to as early as 1839 when American photographer Robert Cornelius produced a daguerreotype of himself by removing the lens cap of his camera and frantically running to get into the shot. Self-portraiture, on the other hand, is a sturdy tree with roots shooting through the soil, to which the selfie is a mere branch. Selfportraits have been explored and practiced by artists since the Renaissance so both are considered to have dynamically differing definitions and intentions. While you may post a selfie via a social media platform to show off a new haircut, a self-portrait isn’t always as simple. Artistic skill, plenty of effort,

underlying meaning and emotive agenda: often through the medium of paint, drawing or sculpture, are core elements of a self-portrait in the traditional sense. On a similar level of intent, a selfie may stand as a modest message, perhaps showing a reassuring smile in times of illness or celebrating a specific moment with a friend that can never, ever be recreated. Facing the World: Self Portraits from Rembrandt to Ai Weiwei opens this month at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and it’s a great way to explore self-portraiture and the extraordinary ways artists have created works of art based on their own image. Running from 16 July to 16 October, there’ll be over 140 works on display. www.nationalgalleries.org. 89

A

s I teetered down the candlelit stairs into the Secret Garden at The Witchery I was instantly captivated by the opulence of the rich tapestry, wood panelling and ornate gold features. Atmospheric and luxe, I finally understood why the restaurant is such an Edinburgh institution. We started the night with a glass of Champagne whilst perusing the leather bound menus. Well, when in Rome. With everything from seafood to game and steak on the menu, we were spoilt for choice but, to start, we plumped for the sweet and nutty roast borders pigeon, peas and bacon with garlic cream, £14, and the Witchery haggis, neeps and tatties, £9.50 – rich, spicy and an all-round winner. Next up, upon instant and mutual agreement we chose the Lamb Wellington, £60 for two. We were served beautifully blush pink meat hugged in golden pastry with the accompaniments of ratatouille, greens and basil mash, all served

in mini copper pots. The meat was sweet and buttery soft, seasoned and not an inch of soggy pastry in sight. We washed it all down with a medium, slightly oaky Rioja Crianza specially chosen by our sommelier. After a brief rest to soak up the atmosphere, we dove head first into dessert, a dark Belgium chocolate tart with orange marmalade ice cream, £8.50. And oh boy was it good, like a Terry’s chocolate orange elevated around the moon and back, our spoons clashing to try and get as much as we could. An incredibly special venue with standout service, The Secret Garden is without doubt one of the best dining experiences I’ve ever had the pleasure to experience. It was simply exquisite. The Grassmarket’s Euro vibes certainly aren’t limited to a few outdoor tables either, 94

in fact, it’s quite easy to take a full continental culinary tour without leaving the comfort of the ‘plaza’. Starting from King’s Stables Road, our al fresco tour begins at the historic Beehive Inn, the fayre here is decidedly British with a huge selection of fine cask ales and classic pub grub. The crowning glory though, is the secret beer garden out back, an incredible hidden oasis when the square’s busy. Next door, we head to Italy (via the US) for American pizza and panzerotti from Mamma’s.

First in hairdressing and now in restaurants, thanks to James Rusk, son of superstar stylists Irvine and Rita, who returned from a successful time in the New York restaurant scene to take his native city by storm. Here he shares a table with i-on. NYC is a dream for many people. Why did you decide to return to Glasgow? I love New York, it holds a very special place in my heart, but Glasgow is my home and it’s where I belong. I love this city. Hutchesons has quickly become one of the city’s ‘must dine’ destinations. Have you been surprised by its success? We were under no illusions that launching Hutchesons was going to be a serious challenge. There are few buildings anywhere in the world that have such a rich history, so there was a real pressure to do it justice. That pressure drove us forward and kept us motivated. 100

In general, how could the city’s restaurant scene be improved? The great thing about Glasgow is that there is no shortage of creative, innovative and dynamic thinkers. In order for those people to flourish though, we need to invest in the aspirational; through both private and public bodies. Collaboration is also crucial within the restaurant industry; businesses need to be willing to interact and share ideas. What advice would you give to anyone hoping to follow in your footsteps? Learn your craft, be patient and believe that what you’re doing matters. It’s as simple as that.

SHOPPERS GUIDE TO… Stephen O’Neil Art Shop

Every now and again you stumble across a gem of a shop. In this case it was Stephen O’Neil’s art/gift emporium in the Southside. The store is primarily a showcase for O’Neil, a Glasgow based Edinburgh born and trained award-winning artist known for his vibrant prints of Scottish and city specific icons – vintage Irn Bru bottles, the Kelpies, Forth Road bridge and Wellington resplendent in his traffic cone head gear – with all other items on sale chosen personally by the artist to complement and correlate with his work. This gives the store a great creative cohesion and making it probably the best-curated retail space in the city. Cult names such as La Case de cousin Paul, Leuchtturm, Chisel and Mouse and Qualy Design are all represented. From the artist himself large scale prints (including limited editions), chunky mugs and budget-friendly coasters sit alongside a selection of stock that Stephen personally loves

– the 3D VW Campervan puzzle proved a big draw on our visit – and there’s an excellent selection of all-things-art and travel books available too. Stephen O’Neil Art Shop, 1030 Pollokshaws Rd, G41 2HG, Tel: 0141 632 8524, www.stephenoneil.co.uk.

SPOTLIGHT ON Dandelion Café

SLURP’S UP

There’s something very sweet about the Dandelion Café – and we’re not just talking about its delicious homemade cakes. The café, which lies adjacent to the tennis courts in Newlands Park, was the brainchild of Southside locals Mairi Darroch and Suzanne Stevenson who have triumphantly transformed the park’s ramshackle former tennis pavilion into one of the city’s prettiest, and friendliest, food stops. The décor is vintage in theme and there’s a real cosy feel on entering. The food is just as comforting with the aforementioned cakes sure to tempt any dedicated dieter. The savoury choices are equally well executed with the café producing family-friendly favourites such as French toast, bagels and burgers with a little gourmet twist. The café is also dog friendly with well behaved pooches welcome on the outside deck and, with its little takeaway hatch, it’s a popular stop-off for schoolkids keen to munch on a scone or an ice cream cone on the walk home. A word to the wise though, get there extra early on sunny weekends as a spot of sun only heightens the Dandelion’s already considerable charm. Dandelion Café, Newlands Park, off Lubnaig Rd, G43 2RY. Open weekdays 9am-5pm, weekends 10am-5pm.

INVERNESS Lunch at Castle Tavern What: An award-winning real ale pub offering classic and inventive dishes. Price: Starters from £3.75, mains from £6.75, desserts from £3. words Susan Barrie

W

ith Inverness Castle situated less than a 100 metre dash from the beer garden, the appropriately named Castle Tavern is widely known to be one of the most scenic pub locations in the city. It’s also a popular spot for walkers finishing the Great Glen Way, with the Tavern’s menu featuring classic pub favourites alongside some inventive dishes, many showcasing the best of Scottish produce. Mr B’s starter of baked Stornoway black pudding (a definite favourite in our household) was served on a bed of bubble and squeak, accompanied by crispy streaky bacon, cherry tomatoes and a poached egg. A no-nonsense stack of all the ingredients, they complemented the black pudding which really was the star of the dish, and rightly so.

106

I chose to skip a starter in favour of dessert, but I’m glad I, too, chose a main dish featuring Stornoway black pudding. This came atop a breaded pork escalope, chargrilled apple slices and garnished with a rich whisky and spring onion sauce. The flavours were all excellent. Being a creature of habit, Mr B opted for a classic Angus Burger and added Monterey Jack cheese for good measure. The generous portions of skin-on fries and beer battered onion rings were well cooked and good accompaniments. The sticky toffee pudding with a hint of gingerbread flavour was a good twist on a classic dessert and a great end to our visit. SPOTLIGHT ON Small Talk

words Martel Maxwell

An unexpected oasis of calm, tradition and charm, it’s hard to believe this Victorian tearoom is on the bustling High Street. My new favourite thing is its ‘Dutch Eggs’ - a breakfast treat of poached eggs, toast, cheese, ham and onions all mixed into an unforgettable combination. Mum opted for the white chocolate and raspberry scone and closed her eyes in relish for a long time. All cakes are baked on the premises - apart from the carrot cake, made by a local lady who has kept the recipe secret for 20 years. Butchers, fishmongers, George’s mum Effie and other contributors to this slice of oldschool heaven are named on the menu. Teas and coffees are served in fine china cups, the background music is always Strauss and pictures of Perth adorn tables. We were lucky to walk in and get a table one Wednesday morning but there’s little chance after midday so do call to reserve. Small Talk, 202 High St, PH1 5PA, Tel: 01738 634770.

ST ANDREWS

OUR FAVOURITE FIND Eden Mansion

E

den Mansion is the epitome of grand Victorian design. Squirrelled away in five acres of sculptured gardens, it may be just a short drive from St Andrews, but, as with all the best kept secrets, you’d be unlikely to find it by chance. The stately home was built as the principle house for the Haig family, Scotland’s oldest whisky distillers, in 1860. Their most notable member was 1st Earl Field Marshall Douglas Haig, who commanded the British Army in WW1. More recently, the mansion, which overlooks the Eden Estuary towards the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, was available for exclusive hire, becoming a favourite of movie and sports stars visiting the Home of Golf while relishing the exclusivity and privacy Eden offered. When Prince William attended St Andrews university, rumour had it he was considering a move here for a short time during 108

his final year with his then girlfriend Kate Middleton - he eventually opted for something a little more humble. Fit for a king, however, it was, and if you had up to £30,000 during peak golfing season it was yours for nine days, complete with butler, chauffeur, chef and maid. The good news? We’re talking past tense for a reason. No longer are Eden’s historic doors closed to passers by. A few months ago, it started life as a five star boutique hotel and restaurant. And thankfully, prices are not eyewatering, with dinner from £45. The building might be imposing, but inside the atmosphere is intimate and friendly, with staff enthused by Eden and making you feel welcome. It’s worth phoning to ask for best room rates and special offers. Tel: 0800 181 4449, www.edenmansion.com.

OUT AND ABOUT

Be inspired with our pick of things to do this month Art lovers should make their way to The Glasgow Boys exhibition at St Andrews Museum. Challenging the artistic traditions of 19th century Scotland, the Glasgow Boys became one of the most significant groups of painters working in Britain at that time. From a group of around 20, many of them went on to enjoy critical acclaim and commercial success around the world. This exhibition looks at their evolving style and impact on the art world, and runs until Saturday 03 September. www.onfife.com. Fancy an outdoor activity? Try your hand at bowling for just £3, and putting for £1.50 at The Kinburn Bowling Club. It’s located next door to the Museum, with tuition available for anyone who needs it. If a good beer garden to lap up the sun is more your thing, we recently stumbled across a ‘secret garden’ at The Rule on 116 South Street. Good for drinks al fresco, they also offer an extensive ‒ and frankly delicious ‒ breakfast list. Let’s keep this one to ourselves. www.the-rule.co.uk.

THINGS TO DO ON A SUNDAY words Martel Maxwell

15 years since my last visit to St Andrews Aquarium, I feared the worst. Surely it wouldn’t live up to memories of taking my baby sister and applauding the acrobatics of sea lions Laurel and Hardy. Thankfully, there was much more than I remembered - British sharks, lionfish, lobsters, piranhas, even meerkats (with a feeding demonstration) and poison dart frogs. In place of the loveable sea lions, equally endearing seals and interactive penguin feeding demonstrations are off the cuteness scale. As for the location at The Scores, it’s worth the visit for the view alone. I’ll be back. www.standrewsaquarium.co.uk.

STIRLING MY STYLISH LIFE Iona Crawford

B

orn and raised in rural Stirlingshire, artist, designer and creative consultant Iona Crawford established her eponymous brand in 2007. Here, she lets i-on in on her creative process and personal style. When was your interest in design sparked? On the very day my darling mother cut up her wedding dress and dyed her coordinating silk satin shoes royal blue - jewels in the crown of the childhood dressing up box my sisters and I shared. Endless fun, and still one of my favourite pastimes. Did you train as a designer or are you selftaught? I studied Fashion Womenswear under Mal Burkinshaw and Robert Gillan at Edinburgh College of Art, graduating with a first class honours in 2007. A wonderful time in my life with endless creativity and world renowned tuition by true visionaries. 110

Which do you enjoy most - your fashion or interiors work? There never feels like a definite design transition between the two when it comes to the design aspect of my practice. There are intrinsic similarities. That said, it's far easier to consider creating an interior feature of a fabulous dress than wearing a chaise longue. Tell us about your personal style. Naturally, I am a bit of a chameleon, transforming and reinventing new styles depending upon the day of the week or the weather. I love the way in which appearance and perception can be altered by one swift change. What would you advise someone looking to define their personal style? Explore, experiment and find what epitomises the essence of you. Equally, don’t be fooled into thinking one person should adopt only one aesthetic. Mixing it up is the name of the game.

#i_online THE EQUATION FOR HAPPINESS What you’re looking at above, is the mathematical formula to predict happiness. Dr Robb Rutledge and a team of researchers at the UCL, after creating the formula back in 2014, transferred its predictions to app form and reviewed the paper with the data of 18,000 users. One of the key findings was that people were happier when they felt a sense of equality, even when events were more in their own favour. In a money based experiment, people whose happiness was affected by getting more than others gave away 30 per cent of the money on average.

BIT AT THE BACK

SMART SLAVE words Dean Newton

S

mart phones have become so integrated into our daily lives that many can’t even bear going to the bathroom without theirs. Check the traffic, find out the weekend weather, read the news, watch a movie, play a game, track your cab; the list of things that our smart phones do for us is staggering and it grows daily. In theory this instant fingertip assistance is fantastic but at what price? Visit any public place and most will be face down; slave to the glow of the screen and unending stream of notifications. Increasingly, people who remember a pre-iPhone era are looking to escape the shackles of mainlining information and the dawn-to-dusk attention seeking that these devices demand. By way of antidote, there are three levels of remediation depending on how bad you have the ‘phonies’. Start off with a measuring app called Rescue Time; it

114

tracks app and website usage to arm you with the information you need to break habits. If that fails then ‘go nuclear’ with an app called ShutApp. If you’re going to hang out with friends or heading to the office and want to keep your phone in your pocket then use this slightly oxymoronic app to block a predetermined list of other apps for a set amount of time, problem solved… probably. Finally, and this is for the terminally attached, try the Punkt MP-01. Styled by top British industrial designer, Jasper Morrison, the MP-01 takes you to barebones basics with nothing more than calling, texts, contacts, an alarm clock and calendar in a beautifully designed package. It’s no Neanderthal; there’s still Bluetooth for your car kit, noisecancelling for busy commutes and the battery will last a staggering four weeks in standby mode. Order yours for £229 from www.punkt.ch.
