GOING WILD

“This year I’m parking the online shopping and taking two luxurious days off to wander around the shops choosing presents for loved ones whilst soaking up the atmosphere.”

“My son has just discovered nature programmes so I’m planning a box set extravaganza of David Attenborough over Christmas – accompanied by a glass of something warming no doubt.”

HOGMANAY AT HOME

“As Englanders we usually spend Christmas down south but this time we’ll be ‘back up the road’ for Scotland’s best invention – Hogmanay. Probably a dinner party with pals so the kids can play and we can too.”

ith around 150,000 people expected in Edinburgh for the city’s New Year festival, you can expect an impressive show with legendary entertainment and top music acts. One of the main attractions is this year’s headliner, superstar DJ Mark Ronson, who will create an exclusive new soundtrack for the iconic Midnight Moment fireworks. The last time Ronson played Edinburgh’s Hogmanay, he was a whole different level of pop star. Back in 2011, when he DJed on the stage at the East End of Princes Street while Primal Scream headlined - his career as a performer in his own right hadn’t really taken off. In November 2014, that all changed when he shared a credit with Bruno Mars on Uptown Funk. The track became the runaway biggest song of the following year, out-selling Adele’s Hello and James Bay’s Hold Back the River. When end-of-decade

charts and best-ofs are released at the end of this year, it’s sure to figure high on them – as well as in Ronson’s headline set at Edinburgh’s Hogmanay. The other big name taking to the stage are Rudimental, the London-based drum ‘n’ bass group who were nominated for a Mercury Prize in 2013. More recent converts might know them from last year’s number one hit These Days (featuring Jess Glynne, Macklemore and Dan Caplen) and this year’s third album Toast to Our Differences. And opening the action on the Princes Street Gardens stage is Glasgow-based reggae and dancehall sound system Mungo’s Hi Fi. Over on the long-established Waverley Stage, synthpop icon Marc Almond headlines with Scottish names Keir Gibson, the Ninth Wave and PorkPie in support, while the brand new High Street stage is allScottish, featuring the indie rock heroes Idlewild, muchtouted young bands West Lothian foursome the Snuts and VanIves, and Edinburgh-based six-piece Celtic fusion band Shooglenifty with sounds ranging from electronica to alt rock. The Silent Disco will also return to Market Street so partygoers can don their headsets and dance the night away. Elsewhere, there will be plenty of other non-musical entertainment happening throughout the Street Party, including physical theatre performances from Circus Alba of Scotland, Compagnie Remue Ménage of France, the Netherlands’ Close Act-Theatre, Dundu from Germany, and UK DJ Mark Ronson companies Avant Garde Dance and Gandini Juggling. And the Hogmanay fun extends to the days before and after the 31st too. There’s the established Torchlight Procession on 30 December, with a Symphonic Ibiza party at McEwan Hall on the same evening. The latter venue also hosts G’Day 2020 on Hogmanay, with soul singer Kylie Auldist and Ronnie Scott’s Big Band, and the official after party with Judge Jules; and on New Year’s Day, a First Footers Family Ceilidh in the morning and a Celtic Connections-presented concert from Eddi Reader. There’s a hell of a lot of partying to be done.

BOOKS ARE BACK It might be the age of Amazon but as another new bookshop opens in Edinburgh, it seems local readers are looking for a more authentic shopping experience

18

S

prawling across three floors of the former RBS building on Blenheim Place, Toppings Books is packed with old-school charm – the walls are lined with 70,000 books, the tallest corners of which can be reached via rolling library ladders, there’s free tea and coffee to encourage visitors to stay a while, and a children’s room where the little ones can browse while mum and dad take in the stunning view of Calton Hill. It might feel like it has been here forever but Toppings opened recently, attracted to our “brilliant independently-minded city with a rich literary tradition,” according to director, Hugh Topping. Tradition is one thing but with the growth of Amazon and ebooks, it seems a brave step to invest so much in a store devoted to face-to-face sales of printed books. Can the humble bookshop really survive? Jack Clark of The Portobello Bookshop (pictured) believes it can; that’s why he walked away from a career in advertising to open his own independent bookshop on Portobello High Street earlier this year. “Bookshops have always been my favourite places to seek out and explore,” he says. “I can’t think of anywhere I prefer to spend time in, and they’re such a vital part of many communities and high streets.” With a more modern, minimal vibe than the likes of Toppings, The Portobello Bookshop has a one of a kind interior and layout, which is down to the tireless efforts of local design team Splintr, who spent the best part of six months refitting the space, formerly a tackle shop. Since they opened in July, they’ve been welcomed to the community with open arms, quickly becoming a regular pitstop for Porty’s many young families thanks to their diverse range of titles and live events. Another Edinburgh bookstore known for its live events is the magical Golden Hare Books in Stockbridge which recently beat 47 other bookshops across the country to win the UK Independent Bookshop of the Year Award 2019. Owner, Julie Danskin, admits it has been a tough ride for the store since opening in 2014, so much so that three years ago, it looked like it might not survive. “We realised that with a bookshop you have to go out to the community, to give them a reason to come in, and to really develop

READING IS A LUXURY AND BROWSING TITLES ONLINE OR FLICKING THROUGH PAGES ON YOUR KINDLE DOESN’T DO THAT JUSTICE”

the audience,” she said, explaining how introducing a programme of launches and other live events such as August’s Book Fringe, helped turn the business around. “Books are back,” she insists and we’d be inclined to agree. Reading is a luxury and browsing titles online or flicking through pages on your Kindle doesn’t do that justice. “A printed book from a bookshop is all about the holding,” says Leith-based writer Jemma Neville, author of Constitution Street. “It’s a holding close between the writer, the bookseller and the reader. The paper pages will soften and crumple. The corners will forever be creased. That ‘old book smell’ is the scent of grass and vanilla. It can be passed from your hands into my hands. There may even be a personal inscription telling a story of its own. And so, we should hold dear our bookshops and their books.” As Jemma says, we want to hold books, to smell them, to stack them on our coffee tables and to fill our bookshelves. There’s something romantic about the printed page and with the revival of the bookshop, it seems that, at least in Edinburgh, that romance is set to be long-term.

The five-star estate beckons guests to its countryside trails by day and its roaring fires by night. Here, it’s about embracing the great outdoors with a long, brisk walk, a soak in the jacuzzi or catching the Atlantic salmon fishing season (from mid January) before heading inside for a leisurely lunch or a dram by the fire. After the Christmas madness a stay at Gleneagles becomes the most peaceful start to the year. Rock N’ Rosé at Lilith’s Lounge, the cocktail bar within Edinburgh newest and sexiest hotel, House of Gods. This long, icy drink is a seductive blend of Tanqueray No.10, pomegranate and rose syrup, lemon juice, Belsazar Rose and Brachetto D’Acqui, apparently inspired by the rock ‘n’ roll debauchery of Guns’ N’ Roses guitarist, Slash.

If you usually have a Clover Club, try…

Seven Dwellings, made with Highland Liquor Co’s premium handcrafted dry gin, Seven Crofts blended with mallow root, earl grey and orange syrup, spicy escubac and lemon juice. This warming aromatic cocktail served at Nauticus Bar in Leith is as silky as your usual gin cocktail, with that lovely foamy finish you love.

If you usually have an Old Fashioned, try…

Johnnie & Ginger, featuring Johnnie Walker Black Label topped up with Fever Tree Ginger Ale and finished with a spicy garnish of fresh ginger and star anise. A longer take on a classic whisky cocktail, the J&G highball is available alongside a host of other winter warming cocktails at the Johnnie Walker Bothy Bar now open on the Mound, Edinburgh.

If you usually have a White Russian, try…

Tita, a decadent blend of vodka, Mozart chocolate liqueur, crème de Cacao, Kahlua, double cream, and charred cinnamon served in Epicurean cocktail bar at The Radisson Collection Hotel, Royal Mile, Edinburgh. It’s basically a dessert in a glass.

I

t’s party season, spirits are high and we’re in full flow. Here’s how best to avoid ‘crash and burn’ syndrome by January, starting now.

1. Get some fresh air

Studies have demonstrated that contact with natural environments (parks, woodlands, beaches) is associated with better health and wellbeing, particularly with populations living in urban environments. Sunlight is also the most potent source of vitamin D; the NHS recommends taking supplements from October to March (1000iu minimum) but getting as much of the real deal as possible will help boost your mood, energy levels and immune function.

2. Plan ahead

With more social engagements than ever, your normal routine can go out the window. Take 30 minutes each weekend to think about what you can do to make looking after yourself easier during the week ahead. That might be making a pot of soup for lunches; plotting time in your diary for a yoga class; or simply making sure you get the recommended 7-8 hours sleep each night. Keeping some of your foundations solid will act as damage limitation.

3. Choose seasonal fruit & veg

The recommended daily intake of fruit and veg is now 8-10 portions a day, ideally in a mixture of colours and varieties. It’s also important that you go for seasonal, locally sourced produce. Fruit and vegetables are packed with vitamins, minerals and fibre feeding our healthy gut bacteria, where 70 per cent of our immune system is housed. And, naturally, the fruit and veg grown closer to home is going to be more ‘alive’ with these nutrients than the punnets of fruit which have been flown over from the other side of the world.

4. Keep blood sugar balanced

There are a few simple things you can do to help aid this process. Firstly, eat a portion of protein with every meal, eggs at breakfast or nuts and seeds or Greek yoghurt on your porridge, and a palm sized portion (fish, chicken, turkey, beans, pulses, tofu) at lunch and dinner. Go easy on the coffee, a stimulant which will spike your blood sugar - keep it to one or two a day before 2pm. Opt for low GI carbohydrates over simple sugars; wholegrains such as brown rice, wholemeal bread, and oats over white rice, pasta, cakes, biscuits and sugary cereals. The level of sugar in the blood regulates our energy levels, mood and hormone balance, indirectly impacting on an array of the body’s functions including the quality of our sleep. And the steadier your blood sugar, the less likely you’ll be to reach for the Quality Streets.

5. Switch it up

You don’t have to fall in line with the standard festive fare. A Christmas dinner is actually a pretty balanced meal, if you go easier on the saturated fat (stuffing, pigs in blankets and roast potatoes) and focus on the quality protein and vegetable sides. Fill half your plate with colourful veg (carrots, sprouts, red cabbage, greens) and consider swaps; sweet potato mash instead of roasted potatoes; prosecco, dry white wine or gin and tonics over creamy drinks, beers and cocktails. And, if you’re going to a party, eat something at home beforehand rather than turning up hungry and filling up on canapes or processed food from a buffet table. CHRISTMAS MARKET

FIVE MINUTES WITH…

JILL HENRY We grabbed a quick chat with the co-founder of Edinburgh brand Meander Apparel What’s the story behind your brand? The idea was born following a charity bike ride from London to Paris when we struggled to find a fully waterproof, breathable, performance jacket that was comfortable for cycling but also stylish enough to be worn off the bike. Realising there was a gap in the market, we set to work and launched the first Meander jacket with the help of crowdfunding in 2018. Tell us about your first design? It was a multi-functioning, lightweight packable jacket designed for the urban adventurer and commuter cyclist – just what we had always wanted. What makes your clothing unique? It’s a combination of fusing timeless design with the highest quality, sustainable, performance fabrics and everyday style. Our t-shirts are made from eco-dri release and cashmere for that super soft luxury feel and the outerwear has reflectivity that can be seen or folded away. What’s your best-selling or personal favourite piece in the collection? The Recycled Parka, it’s made entirely from recycled plastic bottles that have been transformed into an incredibly soft and waterproof jacket. Shop online at www.meanderapparel.com.

MYSTYLE

Jenny Urquhart Chairman of Johnstons of Elgin on effortless style, winter wardrobe tweaks and why the humble twinset is making a comeback MY SIGNATURE LOOK I tend to stick to tonal and effortless. I have three children, the youngest being two years old, so the mornings can be quite risky for attempting anything too fancy. I almost always wear black or grey jeans or a full length skirt as a base then pair that with a shorter length cardigan or jumper, and some heeled boots for extra height. I travel a lot for work so comfort is key – one day I could be hosting an event at our London store and the next, I could be visiting the Hawick Mill before heading back up to Elgin. Our own collections fit my lifestyle perfectly as they are made in natural fabrics which feel great next to the skin. WARDROBE MUST-HAVES A chunky knit cashmere roll neck is like a hug in a jumper for the entire day, it just makes me happy. And I personally believe twinsets are making a welcome come back because they’re so flexible. They can keep you cool and warm, dependent on what you need, and they can be dressed up or down.

Chunky rib silver cashmere jumper, £725, and chevron cashmere merino scarf, £179, both Johnstons of Elgin

40

WINTER WARDROBE TWEAKS I like to wear longer coats when it’s cold outside, like our Car Coat or the bold checked Opera Coat, which brings some ‘wow factor’ for evening events. I think we all become a little braver with our style when winter arrives, whether it be adding a bit of

sparkle or some bolder brights – it’s an easy way to brighten everyone up on the darker nights. MY STYLE INSPIRATION Being at work is a constant source of inspiration as we are lucky to have a team of over 1,000 at Johnstons of Elgin and, amongst them, some well-travelled and talented designers who always look super-stylish. I also take inspiration from other women I spot when travelling, either in airports or other cities. Wherever I see effortless style, I take a mental note. THE ULTIMATE ACCESSORY I always complete any outfit with a scarf, whether it’s a super light, tissue weight merino scarf or a chunky luxe knitted cashmere one that is cosy and sumptuous. Ideally paired with matching gloves for easy winter style.

A VERY INSTAGRAMMABLE CHRISTMAS

Sure, it’s the season of goodwill but it’s also the season of showing off. If you want to make sure your decorations get all the likes this year, here’s how to up your Instagram game…

42

INTERIORS TONE IT DOWN

For a more sophisticated look, swap the usual red and green colour scheme and mountains of glitter for something a little more subtle and easy on the eye. “With modern lives being so busy and hectic, especially in the build up to Christmas, infusing our homes with a sense of calm is a wonderful way to create a comforting atmosphere,” says Nina Plummer, founder of Edinburgh-based online interiors store Ingredients Ldn. “The simplest way to create a calming Christmas atmosphere is through the use of natural materials and the idea of less is more. A few branches from a conifer tree picked up on a walk with the dog and some comforting soft furnishings like hand-dyed cotton velvet in gentle, wintry colours, is all it takes to create a warm, festive atmosphere your insta-followers will love.” Hand-dyed velvet jewel cushion covers from £68 to £76; handwoven cotton cushion covers from £22 to £35; hand-forged copper cup, £30; all www.ingredientsldn.com.

GO BIG ON BLOOMS

Any interiors influencer worth their squares knows that dried flowers are where it’s at when it comes to decorating your home this Christmas. “Arrangements of dried eucalyptus, mixed heather or lavender are a modern alternative to the bold bright reds of traditional Christmas flowers,” say the interiors experts at BoConcept Scotland. “The muted tones contrast beautifully against tables with dark finishes such as walnut or ceramic, a staple of this season’s winter home.” Dried flowers are perfect for using as table centrepieces and to dress place settings, or for the ultimate style statement, you could even try creating a floral cloud to hang above your Christmas table. For a tutorial on how to create this look, visit boconcept.co.uk or visit their Instagram @bonconcept_scot.

INTERIORS

PERSONALISE YOUR PRESENTS

For a personal touch, swap shop-bought gift tags for polaroid pictures of your giftees. Not only will your parcels look supercool under the tree, your friends and family will be touched that you went the extra mile. If you don’t have a polaroid camera and don’t fancy buying one, any old photographs will do the job. But if you are prepared to invest, find the Polaroid OneStep 2 i-Type Instant Camera at John Lewis & Partners for £99. They also have a great range of gift wrap – the Pussy Willow and Snowscape designs pictured are £4 a roll (though we’ll be taking a leaf out of environmentally-aware influencers by wrapping all our presents in recyclable brown paper).

UPGRADE YOUR BAUBLES

Are your baubles looking a little tired? It could be time for an upgrade. For an insta-fabulous look, go all out with colour and embellishment, says Claire McLoughlin of Jeffreys Interiors. “We’re saying goodbye to subtly curated Christmas trees – you know the type; beautifully styled and coordinated (often with the kid’s homemade decorations tucked in at the back… they’ll never know!) – and we’re welcoming full-on, colourful, kitsch personality. Make your tree a place of curiosity and wonder by blending gleaming, jewel encrusted traditional baubles with fun Man Ray lips, colourful bonbons and fluffy unicorns. A blend of texture, colour and whimsy make a real statement tree and, most importantly, one that’s fun to look at.” Jeffreys’ collection of traditional and quirky baubles, including pearly clam shells, glass puffer fish, sparkly lipsticks, and clip on birds are available in the Stockbridge showroom with prices from £3.

PIMP YOUR MANTLE

For the chicest Christmas hearth, use a collection of modern and vintage props with dried flowers or green foliage. “I would stick to using natural elements in neutral colours and layering textures like winding some naturally dyed silk ribbons through a wooden bead garland or a foraged foliage garland,” says Amy Convery of Glasgow prop hire firm, Pops and Piaf. “Then add some festive sparkle with vintage metal candlesticks.” For more styling ideas, visit @popsandpiaf on Instagram or shop the collection at www.popsandpiaf.com.

PAINT IT BLACK

If you still have a cupboard full of crackers and decorations from last year, consider injecting some new life into them with a simple lick of paint – you’ll get bonus likes for your crafty skills. For a dramatic look, pair the blackest of black with earthy tones and a touch of gold and silver. Annie Sloan has an amazing range of decorative paints and waxes - these baubles are painted with Chalk Paint™ in Emperor’s Silk and Paris Grey, while the crackers are painted with Chalk Paint™ in Athenian Black (all £5.95 for 120ml) finished with Gilding Wax in Dark Silver, £6.95. All available at www.anniesloan.com.

SWAP PLASTIC FOR PAPER

You’ve been on a mission to cut down on your plastic consumption all year so don’t stop now. Most mass-produced Christmas decorations will either be made entirely of plastic or feature plastic elements so for something more environmentally responsible that all your followers will approve of, seek out handmade decorations like these geometric paper-folded baubles by Glasgow designer Katie Colin. £14 each, www.katiecolindesign.com.

ith parquet flooring, sandstone walls and leather banquettes, Damm 27 certainly looks the part and it’s determined to impress on the culinary front too, with an ambitious menu comprising breakfast, brunch, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. We visit for the latter and spend some time deciding between the many options – there’s an array of small plates spanning fish, meat, vegetarian and vegan along with a substantial burger menu and its own little mussel pots section. They hail their signature dish as their Bone marrow mac and cheese, £5, but their Short rib of beef bourgignon, £11 and rare sliced onglette steak, £10, were the winners for us. From the indulgent dessert selection, we’d recommend the Sticky toffee pear pudding, £6.50, which comes with a little pot of extra butterscotch sauce on the side just for good measure. Meet the Maker

Introducing the faces behind our favourite local foods WHO Nichola Reith, director (and middle sister) of Three Sisters Bake. WHAT We are a café and catering business, with two countryside cafes, in Quarriers Village and Killearn, and a regular pop-up at Platform at the Argyle Street Arches. We also have a takeaway Cake Bar on Great Western Road and wedding cake business. WHY My two sisters and I all worked in the hospitality industry throughout school and university, after which we went on to get ‘grown up’ jobs in various parts of the world. One by one, we realised that we enjoyed those Saturday jobs in cafes and restaurants far more than we ever did working in an office. Whenever we were reunited, we would talk about the pipe dream of running a food business together and when we all found ourselves living back in Glasgow in 2011, it suddenly made sense to combine our skills and turn that dream into reality. HOW It wasn’t easy getting started. The main hurdle was finding premises. Initially we were looking in the west end of Glasgow, but every time something came up, the landlord would favour an established business over a new start-up. It was our dad who suggested opening up in Quarriers Village. At first it seemed like a crazy idea but the more we considered the idea of a ‘destination’ café, the more we loved it. Luckily the gamble paid off. SIGNATURE DISH Our bakers make everything from scratch, including our famous brownies which come in

58

a variety of delicious flavours. We sell twice as many of the salted caramel flavour than all of the others put together. FRIDGE FAVOURITES I always have a fridge stuffed full of vegetables. If I’m struggling for a dinner idea, I’ll roast a pile of veg, mix with quinoa, cous cous, or brown rice, chuck in some herbs from the garden and voilà! FOODIE SHOPS I’ve got two kids, aged two and six, so online supermarket shopping is an absolute god send for me. For speciality items, I’ll pop to Roots and Fruits on Great Western Road, George Mews for cheese or Lupe Pintos for chorizo. EATING OUT In Glasgow’s West End, I love Wudon, Te Seba, and Eusebi and if we’re in the city, it’s Halloumi, Babs and Nippon Kitchen. www.threesistersbake.co.uk

QUICKFIRE QUIZ

Sweet or savoury? Both. There’s nothing better than a delicious meal finished with a wee sweet treat. Caf or decaf? Ironically, given that I own a coffee shop, I’m really sensitive to caffeine. I carry Rooibos tea bags around with me instead. Skinny fries or chunky chips? The chunkier, the better. Still or sparkling? I make sparkling water infused with fresh fruit at home. Brown sauce or ketchup? Ketchup but only on chips or a Forfar bridie.

FRANCO MANCA

Carrie Mitchell rediscovers pizza the way it’s meant to be eaten at the new Edinburgh restaurant

W

hen it comes to pizza, Neapolitan is king. FACT. You can keep your stuffed-crust, your Chicago-based; your thin and crispy and those floppy New York slices; I want my pizza the way they have it in Naples: with a soft tender crust, crispy black blisters and a paper thin centre topped with the purest ingredients. One man who agrees with me on this is Giuseppe Mascoli, the founder of pizza chain Franco Manca, which began life in London’s Brixton market in 2008 and now operates restaurants across the UK and Italy – including the most recent opening right here in Edinburgh on St Andrew Square. An ex-pat Neapolitan, Giuseppe is a pizza purist championing slow-rising sourdough pizza and seasonal ingredients from small, local suppliers. His formula is undoubtedly successful with Franco Manca pizzas hailed as the ‘best in Britain’, by the fussy foodies at the The Observer no less. And it seems word has quickly spread in Edinburgh. When we show up on a cold November night; we have to wait a good 20 minutes to get a table. “It’ll be worth it,” I reassure my dining companions whose tummies and mouths are grumbling in unison. Finally taking our seats in the small, crowded restaurant; we immediately order a round of Aperol Spritz, £5.50 each, and some bites to start: perfectly buttery Nocellara green olives, £2.35, divinely simple pizza bread with salt & rosemary, £3.45 and a rich, warming aubergine parmigiana, £4.15. Appetites

temporarily placated, we don’t have to wait long before our pizzas arrive and jostling for space and samples from our neighbours commences. From the vast selection spread across our table, there are three winning pizzas: the no.5, a classic combo of tomato, mozzarella, garlic, capers, Kalamata black olives and Cantabrian anchovies, £8; the no.7, a new pizza featuring crispy pancetta, Colston Bassett stilton, fresh baby kale and caramelised onions, £9; and last but not least, the underestimated margarita, known here as the no.2, £6.75. Sure, tomato, mozzarella and basil may not sound like the most exciting of toppings but don’t forget this is where the pizza story began and there’s a very good reason it is the basis for all good pizzas. The simplicity of the ingredients allows every element to sing from the juiciest organic tomatoes, the creamiest British mozzarella and the freshest peppery basil. But whichever toppings reign supreme, one fact remains: it’s all about the base. Deliciously chewy with crispy blisters providing a pleasing contrast to the classic sloppy centre, the sourdough base is a winner. The pizzas aren’t huge which is good news if you’re a dessert fiend and there’s many in our midst. We finish the evening with a table full of sweet things: several wonderfully moist and creamy Tiramisus, £3.95 each, a couple of classic Affogatos, £2.95 each, and a lemon sorbet, £2.65, pepped up with a shot of limoncello, £1.55. The inevitable drink envy quickly spreads and we end up with limoncellos for everyone – it’s what the Neapolitans would do.

Festive feels: I’ve usually taken my kids ice skating at the Christmas market it’s more sliding around and falling over than graceful skating but we have a lot of laughs. Coffee: There is lots of choice for great coffee where I live in Portobello. If it’s a bacon roll kind of a day, I head to Crumbs on the prom; for delicious shortbread and pastries, it’s The Little Green Van; and if I ‘need’ the best doughnut in Edinburgh then Twelve Triangles on the High Street (pictured above) is the place to go. Pizza: Civerinos Slice has the ultimate pizza. I am also very partial to a Friday night delivery from La Favorita it’s a step above your usual takeout pizza. Sunday roast: Most weeks, we gather at my mum’s for the best Sunday dinner of all time. Failing that, The Scran and Scallie in Stockbridge is a close second best.

THEBESTOFEDINBURGH

Anna Moffat Photographer Anna Moffat on her favourite city spots

Fish & Chips: In days gone by, it would have been the ‘techno chippy’ on Broughton Street. Nowadays it’s more likely to be East Coast in Musselburgh - a next level chippy with restaurant attached. Art: I’ll drink up any photography exhibition I can get to and also love wandering around the Portrait Gallery or

the Gallery of Modern Art - perfect for artistic inspiration. Interiors: I love upcycled pieces and have bought some gorgeous, unique creations from In House Design in Portobello (pictured left).

Live music: The Sunday Session at the Dalriada in Portobello is great fun. It’s family friendly, there’s brilliant music and a view of the sea – bliss. Beauty: I love the products from plastic-free online store Echo Shoppe, run by a lovely Edinburgh couple on a mission to help others reduce their use of single use plastic - they have loads of amazing products from soap bars to plastic free glitter. Walk: I am lucky enough to be able to walk along the prom in Portobello (pictured below) every day. The water is always different and since taking up wild swimming in May, I now look out and see it as inviting. Follow Anna on Instagram @annamoffat or visit www.annamoffat.com
