The exhibition you won’t want to miss...

I

n a world first, the National Museum of Scotland is championing diversity in the fashion industry with the launch of its new exhibition Body Beautiful: Diversity on the Catwalk. Exploring how today’s fashion creatives are embracing inclusivity and body positivity across all sizes, genders, ages, races and disabilities, the exhibition will showcase catwalk ensembles from designers who champion diversity including Ferragamo, Ashish, Pam Hogg and Jean Paul Gaultier, all brought to life through film, photography and fashion publications. “With more and more designers incorporating ideas around inclusivity into their work, attitudes are shifting, making this a particularly exciting time in fashion,” says exhibition curator Georgina Ripley. “The catwalk creations on display in this exhibition offer a refreshing counterpoint to historical, narrow ideals of beauty, and they demonstrate that diversity can be a consideration for everyone working in the fashion industry today.” The exhibition runs until Sunday 20 October at National Museum of Scotland, Chambers Street. Admission is free. nms.ac.uk/BodyBeautiful

GH EDINBUR HALL CONCERTE GREEN LIGHT GETS TH 10

allelujah. After years spent mourning the loss of our favourite Edinburgh hangouts from The Venue on Calton Road to The Picturehouse on Lothian Road, we’re finally getting a new venue fit for our cultural capital. The Dunard Centre, supported by Royal Bank of Scotland, will be a £45million concert hall situated just off St Andrew Square and it’s the city’s first purpose-built music and performance venue for over 100 years. The stunning space will feature a 1000seat auditorium for live performances, a dramatic open foyer and bustling café bar. It will also become home to the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and a principal venue for Edinburgh International Festival. EIF director Fergus Linehan said the project would be “a once in a generation opportunity to help secure Edinburgh’s reputation as one of the world’s great creative and cultural capitals.” While we like to think we already have that accolade nailed, we definitely agree the project is a reason to celebrate. Here’s hoping it attracts big names to the capital and provides even more opportunities to help local talent thrive.

Royal inspiration

W

ith wedding season upon us, couples everywhere will be debating what to wear on their big day. If you’re struggling to decide – or you’re just a huge fan of the Royals - pay a visit to the Palace of Holyroodhouse where Meghan and Harry’s wedding outfits will go on display as part of a special exhibition called A Royal Wedding: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex from 14 June to 06 October. Meghan’s bespoke Givenchy gown caused quite a stir for being a low-key style, especially compared to Princess Katherine’s dramatic lace dress but, according to industry insiders, Markle’s minimal look has sparked a trend for simpler designs and a move away from heavy embellishment. We’re not sure Harry’s frock coat inspired modern grooms in quite the same way but he does look rather dashing in his uniform. The Edinburgh International Film Festival rolls into town from 19 to 30 June with another exciting programme of screenings. Not sure what to see? Here, deputy artistic director Diane Henderson shares her five top picks. GOOD OMENS An exclusive opportunity to see all six episodes of TV series Good Omens on the big screen, this is an amazing adaptation of the novel, directed by Scotland’s very own Douglas Mackinnon and starring Michael Sheen as the angel and David Tennant as the demon. 29 June at VUE Omni. H0US3 Inspired by the mysterious ‘insurance files’ famously employed by Julian Assange and WikiLeaks, this gripping sci-fi thriller is an accomplished directorial debut by Manolo Munguía. 20 June at Odeon and 22 June at VUE Omni. BUNUEL IN THE LABYRINTH OF THE TURTLES It’s Paris, 1930, and the scandal surrounding the release of Luis Buñuel’s film L’Age d’Or has left him penniless. His luck changes suddenly when a friend wins the lottery and he starts work on his next film, Las Hurdes. So begins this beautifully animated feature; part road movie and part making-of documentary. 29 June at Odeon and 30 June at VUE Omni. THE SOUND OF SILENCE According to ‘house tuner’ Peter Lucian (Peter Sarsgaard), every home suffers from noise pollution and it’s his job to put things right. Everything in Peter’s buttoned-up world is in order until new customer Ellen (Rashida Jones) brings a problem he can’t rectify. A brilliantly nuanced performance by Sarsgaard is at the centre of this off-beat, very human drama. 26 June at Odeon and 28 June at VUE Omni. TOY STORY 4 It is a real thrill to show this Disney•Pixar animated delight to film fans just before the festival starts. It might be nine years since Toy Story 3 but Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) and their toy buddies have a new lease of life since their original owner, Andy, gave them to youngster Bonnie. 16 June at Festival Theatre. ith T in the Park gone and Electric Fields relocating from its usual spot in Drumlanrig Castle to Glasgow warehouse SWG3, the festival scene in Scotland is undoubtedly changing. Sprawling countryside extravaganzas are being replaced by more compact, city-based revelries; fortunately smaller venues doesn’t seem to equal lesser names. Electric Fields’ typically first-rate line-up is still in evidence, with headliners Metronomy, the Vaccines and Frank Turner, the contemporary punk politics of Sleaford Mods and Fat White Family, the outstanding Nadine Shah, and house-pop revivalists Friendly Fires all appearing. T in the Park’s smaller offspring TRNSMT on Glasgow Green - still the big noise as far as Scottish festivals are concerned - treads as fine a line as it can between the commercial and the credible, with mainstream names like Catfish and the Bottlemen, George Ezra, Snow Patrol and Richard Ashcroft alongside a welcome burst of grime from Stormzy and hometown heroics from TRNSMT’s breakout star Gerry Cinnamon. DF Concerts also run Summer Sessions, which has grown from its established three outdoor festival-sized dates on Glasgow’s Bellahouston Park - this year’s featuring The Cure, Foo Fighters and The 1975 - to a presence in Edinburgh too, with a series of smaller gigs in Princes Street Gardens throughout the city’s festival. This year, highlights are Florence + the Machine, Chvrches, Lewis Capaldi and Primal Scream. Regular Music is another big promoter with a presence in the East and West. In Glasgow, there’s Summer Nights at Kelvingrove Bandstand, another series of compact outdoor gigs featuring big

For many fans, however, a festival isn’t a festival unless it involves midgie spray, camping equipment and a lack of easy access to public transport. For these people, as the hard-partying megafestival appears to be dying out, Scotland’s smaller

ecosystem of boutique festivals is still going strong as a series of small village events it’s okay to take your kids to. Already well-established on the scene are Doune the Rabbit Hole, in the countryside near Loch Lomond, which moves back a month to July for its tenth anniversary, and boasts a brilliantly diverse line-up headlined by old-schoolers The Damned, Sister Sledge and the Wailers (of Bob Marley fame); the ever-growing and extremely child-friendly Kelburn

Garden Party, featuring a Leftfield DJ set and crowd-pleasers Colonel Mustard & the Dijon 5; the young and lively Eden Festival; and what’s now Scotland’s largest countryside festival, Belladrum Tartan Heart, this year featuring impressive names Jess Glynne, Chvrches, Elbow, Johnny Marr and local hero Lewis Capaldi. It might be harder to find your way home from this little lot but that’s what makes a festival an adventure, right?

T

he Architecture Fringe is back in town from 07-23 June, the fourth edition of the festival hosts more than 100 events throughout Scotland. There’s a takeover of The Lighthouse, Glasgow, which will be packed with new commissioned work, key events and hosts the opening night party. Other highlights include the Architecture Bar by Dress for the Weather at the Lighthouse from 08 - 23 June, a talk by practicing architect and leading urbanist Peter Barber on 21 June at 45 Market Street, Edinburgh, Morag Myerscough’s first Scottish commission showing her signature graphic style (pictured) at Castlegate, Aberdeen, and Paper Chains, a temporary pavilion made using (you guessed it) paper chains to create boundaries and canopies at 34 Wright’s Houses, Edinburgh, from 14-16 June. Find the full programme of events at architecturefringe.com.

Join hundreds of cyclists on a journey through the night to celebrate the Summer Solstice on 22 June. Starting in England and ending in Scotland, the Ride to the Sun night ride is inspired by the Roman legions who once trudged the long road from Luguvalium (Carlisle) to the old garrison camp of Caer Amon (Cramond). Now in its fifth year, the event is unique in that its sole focus is fun, entry is free and there is no competition involved. Organiser Gary Cameron explains its appeal: “Ride to the Sun is about doing something different. It’s the camaraderie that makes it a special social event. We just want to get people out on their bikes, getting fit, and having a good time.” Unlike the Romans who would have had to carry meagre provisions on their journey, cyclists participating in Ride to the Sun will enjoy a chip shop stop in Moffat after 43 miles and a quick drink at the Crook Inn pub at 61 miles, before arriving in Cramond in time for the sunrise and a bacon sarnie. Registration is free. Find out more at ridetothesun.co.uk.

THE NEWEST PLACES TO TRY… FROM RESTAURANTS TO CAKE BARS, HERE’S SOME FOOD FOR THOUGHT

8

G

lasgow’s most exciting new opening can be found in Blythswood Square Hotel where its new restaurant and bar, Bo & Birdy is looking mighty fine with stunning interiors. Give the sharing dishes a go...and the signature gin cocktail too, obviously. Down on Dublin Street in Edinburgh’s New Town is the Little White Pig. Combining the comfortable, unpretentious environment of a traditional Scottish pub with ridiculously tasty, local and seasonal food, it’s a great family, foodie and dog friendly spot and we think you’ll like it. We’ve got high hopes for the newly-opened Damm Twenty Seven in Causewayside. Not only does it look great but there are loads of ongoing offers like the Bottomless Brunch, including Prosecco and Bloody Marys, any brunch dish and tea/coffee, on Saturdays and Sunday, 10am to 2pm, for £25. The Spylaw in Colinton is also looking good after a major refurbishment by new owners, also the team behind The Hermitage Bar in Morningside... and there’s a beer garden out back for when the sun shines. For lunch with a view of the castle and Scott Monument, Scott’s on Princes Street could be a good shout, especially if you’ve got visitors in tow. The newly-revamped restaurant at the Mercure Edinburgh City Princes Street Hotel offers a Scottish-inspired menu including Cullen Skink and the chef’s signature Scotch pie. If you’re sweet toothed you’ll be pleased to hear that Mimi’s Bakehouse is now serving brunch, lunch, and a whole array of home-baked goodness from its permanent residence at City Art Centre on Market Street whilst, in the West, Scotland’s baking sisterhood, Three Sisters Bake, has arrived at 401 Great Western Road with their latest venture, Cake Bar. The new takeaway will probably be the most instagrammable café in town, for the cakes and interiors equally. instagram.com/hilarycaneat

9 WE NEED TO TALK

BLENDING BANTER WITH HEARTFELT DISCUSSION ABOUT MASCULINITY AND MENTAL HEALTH COULD LITERALLY SAVE LIVES, SAYS CARINE SEITZ

18

W

hen Scott Hutchison’s body was discovered in Port Edgar last year, there was one question on everyone’s lips – why? 36 years old and the frontman of an internationally successful band, it seemed that Scott had everything to live for. But the Frightened Rabbit singer had struggled with anxiety and depression for years before he took his own life. His tragic death broadened the conversation around men’s mental health in Scotland, but the stigma that exists for a lot of men is still very real. Speaking to NME, Scott himself had once said: “I hate the idea that opening up is emasculating. It’s good to lay yourself bare, you’ll feel better for it. But I don’t think we’re all the way there yet.”

IT’S GOOD TO LAY YOURSELF BARE. YOU’LL FEEL BETTER FOR IT” He is of course, right. We have a long way to go. While discussion around mental health might be more widespread than ever, the tone continues to be overwhelmingly feminine, middle class, and assumes that all those affected can relate. How does this speak to men for whom pub banter over a football game is the closest they get to sharing emotion? Scottish footballer David Cox has talked publicly about his history of depression, self-harm and suicide attempts. Despite being taunted by rival fans and players - “I [once] heard a fan shout ‘away and hang yourself and do it right this time’ - David feels it’s important to speak out. “[When you’re suicidal] you don’t think about anything else other than how you’re feeling. It’s the loneliest place you could ever imagine. I used to wake up every day and think about how to end my life”. In a survey carried out by the Professional Footballers Association, 64 per cent of professional players in Scotland said they or a teammate had struggled with mental health issues. And the bigger picture is even more alarming - according to Mental

19

Health Aberdeen, suicide accounts for 75 per cent of deaths in men under 40, and over 1-in-3 Scottish men have experienced suicidal thoughts. While difficult to absorb, these staggering statistics cannot be ignored. Mental health issues facing men can range from stress and anxiety triggered by the mundanity of modern life: financial worries, relationship woes, loneliness; to difficulties expressing emotion, or issues around drink and drugs; to complex behaviours formed in childhood, and hardwired chemical imbalances. Women are generally taught as girls to share their feelings, while little boys are told that big boys don’t cry, and real men man up. Speaking on the launch of his family’s charity Tiny Changes, Scott Hutchison’s brother and bandmate, Grant, emphasised how important it is to open up the conversation around mental health at a young age. “Scott suffered all through his life with anxiety and depression and spoke often about his own struggles as an anxious child, which is the reason behind the band name Frightened Rabbit,” Grant explains. “This is why we feel it is important to focus our attentions on young people and use a preventive approach, rather than attempting to fix a problem that has already taken hold in a person’s life.” One woman who will no doubt understand this mission is Edinburgh mum Laura Nolan who lost her teenage son Josh in 2013 when he took his own life. “He was dyslexic and found it hard to concentrate which got him into trouble quite a lot,” she says. “He started experimenting with drugs and alcohol, and the real problems began. I felt completely helpless”. Believing it is possible to prevent every suicide, Laura’s charity, The Joshua Nolan Foundation, gives access for anyone in need to counselling from therapists trained in suicide prevention,

20

hosts classroom workshops to get kids talking and aims to promote awareness of mental health wellbeing to all ages and genders. Daniel Proverbs, the founder of Glasgow-based charity Brothers in Arms, knows what it’s like to be a teen struggling to cope. “My journey with mental health started as a teenager. But 15 years ago, just after the birth of my first daughter, I planned and attempted to take my

GIRLS ARE TAUGHT TO SHARE THEIR FEELINGS WHILE LITTLE BOYS ARE TOLD THAT BIG BOYS DON’T CRY AND REAL MEN MAN UP” own life,” he says. This was a turning point for Daniel when he realized life was for living and now he’s hoping he can turn the tide for other men feeling overwhelmed and unable to reach out. “Brothers in Arms is a safe place for men, a place we can call our own, it’s an online community which aims to raise awareness that being silent is not being strong,” explains Daniel. As well as offering advice and live coaching through their Brothers-Thrive app, they have recently launched a free suicide prevention app Brother-StayAlive designed for men having suicidal thoughts or those concerned about a friend or family member. And in a new partnership with City of Glasgow College, the charity offers support to students in weekly lunchtime sessions on campus aiming to challenge the culture that prevents men seeking help when they need it. Conversation is also the cornerstone of a project called The Changing Room hosted at Hibs’ football stadium, where men are encouraged to talk openly about

everything from the off-side rule to – crucially – issues causing them distress. “It’s about bringing guys together. We’re providing space where they can have banter, but also be open and address any mental health issues or challenges they may be facing,” says manager Christopher Nicolson. A similar ethos can be found at Andy’s Man Clubs, where the slogan is “It’s Ok To Talk”, via group sessions in Dunfermline, Dundee and Perth. “Founder Luke Ambler, a former rugby league pro, started the club in 2016 when his brother-in-law took his own life. “Our goal is to halve the male suicide rate in this country,” he says. “We’re trying to save lives.” Another public figure who has recently opened up about his own mental health struggles and substance abuse is comedian Tony Slattery, who started out at the Edinburgh Fringe before becoming a household name on Whose Line Is It Anyway in the ’90s. But then he seemed to just disappear. What actually happened was a massive breakdown which left Slattery alternating between ‘terrible isolationism and an almost comatose state’ before being hospitalised and finally diagnosed with bipolar disorder. “The manic part of me was not because of the drugs and alcohol. I think it was there already. But the drugs and alcohol certainly ignited it,” he says. After 15 years in obscurity, Slattery will return to the stage at this year’s Fringe but does this mean he is all better? Not by a long shot. “There have been times when I’ve thought: ‘I can’t go on stage, I need that half bottle of vodka right now.’ I’m getting better, but there’s still some way to go.” Here’s hoping that speaking out is another part of the process which could help the troubled comedian – or those who will hear his story and relate. It’s good to talk.

A great friend of mine, Dr Andrew Murray, a Sports Medicine Doctor and accomplished ultra-runner, gave me lots of advice when I started out but there’s one piece of advice that has really stuck with me – ‘remember to have fun and enjoy the journey’. Whether it be physically or mentally, it’s so important to make sure you’re having fun. If you’re not, your motivation plummets and it’s impossible to keep going. Trust me, I’ve been there.” Scottish ultra-runner and coach Donnie Campbell, who recently completed the challenging 58-mile course Ramsay Round near Fort William.

My dad used to say ‘If you want to succeed in life, make sure you do things right- roll up your sleeves and move it, don’t sweep around it!’ What he meant was, don’t do things by halves, be prepared to get stuck in. I’ve definitely taken that on board since stepping into his shoes at work.” Young Director of the Year nominee Chris Thomas of incovo, who took the reins of the business after his dad’s tragic death two years ago.

My Grandfather has been inspirational to me all my life, passing on many words of wisdom such as ‘actions speak louder than words’. Indeed, it is his actions that I have taken most inspiration from. He is a true gentleman, always considerate, always polite and above all, always kind. I have tried my best to emulate him and definitely fallen short… I will keep trying.” Steven Allum, general manager at The Witchery, Edinburgh.

My dad loved the old adage ‘Look both ways before crossing the road...’ but he didn’t mean literally – it’s a metaphorical piece of advice for many life situations; to see both sides of an argument, to weigh up pros and cons before making a decision, to be aware in general of everything around you. Of course it has also helped when crossing the road!” TV presenter Konnie Huq who will be appearing at Edinburgh Book Festival to celebrate the release her first children’s book Cookie!...and the Most Annoying Boy in the World (Piccadilly Press) out on 08 August.

My father has often reminded me that everything is possible and to be prepared for the unexpected. It has been useful advice in business and life.” Jenny Urquhart, Deputy Chairman of Johnstons of Elgin who works alongside father Ian Urquhart as Chairman.

When I was feeling a bit down one day and not knowing what to do with myself, my father told me the story of the time when he was a young man and he woke up naked under a tree in the middle of nowhere. He eventually found his glasses and then slowly managed to trace the line of his clothes until he was fully dressed. He had no money or memory of what had happened or indeed where he was. But, he found the funny in the situation at the time. ‘Courage mon brave and shuffle the cards’ is the quote he likes to give. Essentially, shake it off, find your glasses and clothes and start again.” Actress and Scottish BAFTA winner Shauna McDonald

MONEY ON MY MIND HOLLY TRACEY JOINED SOME OF SCOTLAND’S MOST INFLUENTIAL MILLENNIALS FOR BRUNCH, TO DISCUSS THEIR ATTITUDES TO FINANCES. ROYAL BANK OF SCOTLAND IS ON A MISSION TO HELP TACKLE THE FINANCIAL ISSUES FACED BY A THIRD OF YOUNG SCOTS WHO FIND IT DIFFICULT TO MANAGE THEIR MONEY THROUGH ITS FREE AND CONFIDENTIAL FINANCIAL HEALTH CHECK SERVICE.

S

itting around a table discussing money and financial health with seven of Scotland’s most influential social media bloggers, all ‘millennials’ like me, quickly dispels the myth that mine is a generation of avocado addicts, glued to their phones with little notion of ‘a decent days’ work’. My fellow diners have all built online businesses out of grit and creativity- their success due to their individualism and hard work. Yes, we were tucking into hearty plates of French toast, so that bit about loving brunch is probably true, but our conversation left me in no doubt that whilst there are young people out there getting savvy about their money, there are plenty of us who felt in the dark and uncertain about our financial security. “There’s a reason I eat supernoodles for dinner” admits fashion blogger and student, Aoife Malone, “I’m generous to a fault and I’m always spending money impulsively. I feel like I should have been taught basic money management in school!” The Gentleman Select, Peter Gemmell agrees, “yeah dealing with your own personal finances seems like it has moved on so much from even ten years ago. I feel like we’ve gone from cash machines to cryptocurrency but we’re still struggling to understand what goes on in between.”

Amy Newcombe, The Luminous Life is one of the lucky ones; “my dad has helped advise me, but I know a lot of my friends don’t have that support. I think there’s definitely a stigma about talking about money with millennials.” “But I think it’s healthy to talk about money with your peers,” suggests Edineats Ailsa Harper. “They’ll understand the challenges of managing money, like trying to save for cars and homes, but also have a social life and not feel like you’re cutting back on the good times.” Scott McGlashan, Blu Blazer Guy is definitely on the right track; “I’m a firm believer in keeping finances in check. I did the Financial Health Check with the Royal Bank and it offered valuable insights, advice and reassurance.” And me? I’ve gone twenty-four years sparing little thought to budgeting, much less the future. The brunch inspired me to make a change so a few days later I was the proud owner of my very own financial plan, having attended a twenty minute Financial Health Check in a Royal Bank branch. The free and confidential service is available to both Royal Bank customers and non-customers and can also be done over the phone making it even easier to get on top of your life admin. The Financial Health Check service is designed to empower people to feel more in control of their finances and help them work towards their own financial goals whether that is getting on the property ladder or saving for a rainy day… From now on, I will be a little more mindful before wielding my contactless card to open the Pandora’s box of clothes, restaurants and trips with one little tap. For more information, visit https://personal.rbs.co.uk/ personal/financial-health-check.html Terms and conditions apply All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc. The total sample size was 1003 adults. Fieldwork was undertaken between 12th – 14th February 2019. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all Scottish adults (aged 18+).

Kestin Hare

THE MENSWEAR DESIGNER ON THE PERFECT EVERYDAY TROUSER, STYLE ICONS AND SUPPORTING SCOTTISH DESIGN

ON HIS EPONYMOUS LABEL I launched Kestin Hare in 2015 and have steadily grown a global business with two stores - one at Custom Lane in Leith, one in Shoreditch, London - and an ecommerce business, as well as selling wholesale to around 80 of the best global independents. It’s challenging being based in Edinburgh but I believe in supporting Scotland and its design and textile industry. ON STAYING LOCAL We champion local production, with over 70 per cent of the collection being made in the UK. For example, all of our knitwear is made in the Esk Cashmere factory in Dumfries. We focus on making high quality clothes for like-minded men.

the area fly fishing with my dad and still enjoy visiting the fishing beats and the whisky distilleries, such as BenRiach. I wanted to bring in those functional elements of country attire but update them and make clothes that you can wear every day. ON WARDROBE MUSTHAVES For me, it has to be the Inverness trouser (pictured left). It’s our best seller and the perfect everyday trouser. ON STYLE ICONS My grandad, Bill, who ran pubs in Leith, was the best dressed guy I knew growing up. He always made an effort and I looked up to him. ON LOCAL PLACES TO SHOP Zero Waste recently opened near where we live on Ferry Road. They sell lots of house clearance furniture, it’s well worth a look. I picked up an amazing soli metal architects table for a steal. ON THE FUTURE In 10 years’ time, I’d still love to be based in Edinburgh, building my business. I feel like I’ve only just started the Kestin Hare brand and I’ve got ambitious plans. kestinhare.com

W

hen we were told that i-on was closing the office a year ago, a sense of panic immediately took hold of the team. Another sad sign of the downturn in the publishing industry? We couldn’t have been more wrong. Our clever directors weren’t closing the doors on the business, they were taking a step to improve the business by choosing to invest in their team, rather than their landlord. It certainkly worked for me. Finally, I was able to let go of my over-priced city flat and move out to the country where a detached three-bed home was half the price. My daughter, my dog, my partner, have all benefited from having more space, more air and less stress. My colleagues might have chosen to stay in the city but rather than spending every morning and evening sitting on a bus, they now have extra time to take that walk on the beach, fit in that yoga class or just spend an extra hour with their kids. Of course, it hasn’t all been rosy, there have been times where some of us have felt a little lonely working from home but thanks to modern technology, we’ve discovered ways to connect and communicate every day. Weekly catch ups in person mean we can still get our fix of team banter and there are far less of those frustrating eye-rolly moments which used to occur when we all got fed up of the sight of each other. One man who knows exactly what I’m talking about is Michael Payne, who has dedicated his career to liberating businesses from the office. “It’s all about meeting up when it matters,” he says of the swanky new AnywhereWorks hub on Rutland Street. “We think of it like a family – you see your relatives occasionally and you have a good time, laughter, food, and all that but if you saw them all day, every day, they’d drive you stark raving mad, right?”. Indeed. “Well the office is the same. Our app and hub combined mean our clients can be anywhere and be able to focus on their work then meet up occasionally and have a great time. We find that at our meet ups there’s more laughter, more engagement, you’re actually happy to see your co-workers.” And how many people can honestly say that? Starting out as a telecommunications business in Portland, Michael’s company had humble beginnings: “We worked from a garage sitting on $9 chairs,” he laughs. But as the business grew and talent began to emerge in distant places, he realised that letting the office go would actually benefit the business. “With more flexibility, we find more talent comes to us and you attract and retain great people who may be sick of sitting in an office 40 hours a week. As employers, you naturally worry about whether people will actually be working or just sleeping on the couch or cruising Facebook. Our app was designed to recreate the visibility in the office so you can quite literally see what everyone’s up to. Right now, I can see that our designer is sitting in Israel working, we have someone on in Spain, someone in Poland. You might not be physically together but you know what’s going on so you feel more a part of things and you’re confident that everyone else is collaborating and working.”

PEOPLE TALK ABOUT REMOTE WORKING BUT WE DON’T USE THAT WORD AS IT IMPLIES LONELINESS AND ISOLATION. WHAT WE OFFER IS EMPOWERING” As well as allowing this transparency, the app offers communication and screensharing tools to enable collaboration. There’s even a 24-hour receptionist service for businesses to ensure their phone is always answered. “People talk about remote working but we don’t use that word as it implies loneliness and isolation. What we offer is designed to be empowering.” So the working from home part sounds great but where do you go when it is time to meet up – a noisy café or restaurant? Your colleague’s cramped living room? The options aren’t exactly inspiring hence the AnywhereWorks hub was born. The stunning space set across four floors of an Edinburgh townhouse is designed to meet the needs of modern businesses with high speed wifi and beautifully decorated meeting rooms. Led by the talented Adeline Graham working with APEX, the hub almost feels like a boutique hotel, just minus the beds. “I find work more inspiring and engaging when you have an inspiring space,” says Michael. “We wanted

42

the hub to feel more like a family space, a collaboration space, not so much like a cubicle farm. Each room tells a different story from The Bothy to The Library, and each one will inspire people differently.” Michael’s passion for his business is clear but I’m interested to know more about how working Anywhere has affected him personally. Is he happier now than when he was working out of a warehouse in Portland? “Of course. Every day I walk three miles to take my son to school. I’ve been able to give up my driver’s licence and feel like I’m a small part of making the world more shareable. It was all inspired by a book called The Pale Blue Dot by Carl Sagan about how we were put on this earth together and we better figure out a way to collaborate rather than wasting time on division. That’s what it’s all about really - coming together.” Private rooms in the AnywhereWorks Hub are available on an ad hoc basis from £175 per day. If you want to become a Regular, the Anywhere pass is available at £100 per month and gives you a £50 reduction on each room booking, 60 min of receptionist service, access to the App and longer opening hours. How do I bring colour and personality to my small city flat? KIMBERLEY BREMNER OF JEFFREYS INTERIORS SHARES HER TIPS FOR STYLISH APARTMENT LIVING

46

INTERIORS

It’s a myth that we only design for big Georgian properties.People in Edinburgh and Glasgow often live in flats and need multi-functional spaces where they can relax, eat and work without compromising on style. In our Stockbridge showroom, we have a space dedicated to this idea which we call the Ibiza room (pictured left). Keep things bright with a bold paint colour and use it everywhere to emphasize a feeling of light and space. We chose paint by Bauwerk Colour in Gerbera (which nods to the Pantone colour of the year, Living Coral) and painted the walls, skirting, architraves, fireplace and ceiling in the same shade. Large windowpane style mirrors on either side of the window also enhance the light in the room and create an illusion of space. Choose furniture that is multi-functional. A modular corner sofa can be used for lounging/watching TV and eating. Simply add a small dining table at the chaise end of the L-shape. If eating off your lap doesn’t appeal, place a chair on the other side. We’ve chosen one by Clockhouse which is a hybrid squishy arm-chair/dining chair so it’s padded and comfortable but firm and upright enough to reach the table. By the window, we have another little bistro table which is ideal to set up your laptop. Become a lover of stools. We scattered a mixture of small pouffes and ceramic stools throughout the room. They’re great for extra seating and also double up really well as drink tables.

Don’t be afraid to use pattern, colour and texture. We’ve upholstered the sofa in natural linen and added cushions in soft pinks, peaches, blues and rusty tone (mainly by Elitis and Andrew Martin), to create a contrast. We’ve also chosen lighting and accessories in colourful rattan to give a sunny beachy vibe. Add personality with an eclectic selection of accessories. We’ve curated a mix of objet that could have been picked up on travels such as our Raku vases and tribal necklaces. You don’t have to spend lots of money on these pieces – our accessories start from £7. LUXURY I LAKESIDE LIVING LAURA WOOD DOES THE LAKE DISTRICT DIFFERENTLY AT LODORE FALLS HOTEL AND SPA, KESWICK

48

f I close my eyes and think of my happy place, one of them is me, chilling out in an outdoor infinity pool, glass of Champagne to hand, soaking in some stunning views. In this scenario the sun’s normally shining too. But, the last time I got to experience this for real was on a fairly dreary day in March, on a recent trip to the Lake District, and the weather wasn’t going to dampen my spirits. Our planned walk around the beautiful Lake Derwentwater to Keswick may have been cut short by a sudden downpour but that only gave us more reason to get cosy indoors and to check out the fabulous new spa and thermal suite that now forms part of Lodore Falls Hotel and Spa. Walking’s overrated anyway. The original Lodore Falls Hotel is a traditional, charming and

typical-looking Lake District hotel. It’s friendly, down to earth, welcoming and a thriving meeting/resting point for hikers and walkers taking in the Lakes, housing loads of breakout areas – a lounge, bar and the dog library for guests who prefer not to be parted from their four-legged friends, and an outdoor terrace with views of the waterfall from which the hotel takes its name. If you’re staying over, ask for a refurbed, lake view room for the best experience - dogs can stay too in some of the rooms. But, for us, it’s the addition of the Falls spa and its suite accommodation that brings an overnight stay in the Lake District bang into the 21st century. The lodge style spa suites may not be the cheapest accommodation you’ll find in the area but they’re really, really, good. Great views, your own balcony, a large separate

TRAVEL

lounge area, king size beds (two in our suite), walk in wardrobe… Oh, and a half bottle of fizz on arrival, soft drinks and snacks, and Elemis toiletries to take (insert guilty emoji). Use of the adult only spa and thermal suite also comes with the room charge in the spa suites but other guests and public can enjoy four hours’ use of the facilities for £25 (£35 on Saturdays). As a city girl who loves a bit of downtime in a sauna or two, that’s a small price to pay. The Falls is pretty impressive – five treatment rooms offering great treatments (I tried the Akwaterra massage; a blissful take on a hot stone massage using ergonomic ceramic Akwaterra tools and La Sultane de Saba massage oils), a Rasul mud chamber and thermal suite with aroma steam room, herbal sauna, salt steam room, ice fountain and drench showers. There’s also a Champagne bar, relaxation room and heated beds so plenty of space to

bliss out and chill before hitting the Finnish sauna and hydropool. We had no intention of leaving the spa but all that heat and water works up an appetite so we dragged ourselves back to our superb suite to get ready for dinner at the equally new Pan Asian restaurant, Mizu. Another big hit, we dined on the six-course tasting menu (£38pp) consisting of perfectly prepared sushi and sashimi, a classic miso soup, beef tataki with a twist and a standout teriyaki lamb dish. Country walks, spa, fresh, healthy dining - it all adds to the virtuous nature of a stay here. So, it may be a bold statement but, for my first trip to the Lake District in at least 10 years, it doesn’t get much better than our hotel of choice. And sipping Champagne from the heated outdoor, hydrotherapy pool overlooking Lake Derwentwater and the nearby fells is indeed a very happy place to be.

Must-try products and treatments FRUITYLICIOUS Could we have found the perfect fragrance for summer nights? With notes of mango, patchouli and grapefruit, Angel Eau Croisière, £48, is deliciously fruity.

My top grooming tip would be to… deep cleanse every day. Some men think a quick splash of water will do the trick but so much more is needed. I use the double cleanse approach which involves cleaning the skin with an oil-based cleanser, then following with a water-based cleanser. My celebrity icon is… Tom Ford. He’s always perfectly groomed without going over the top. My top grooming essentials are… ESPA Triple Action Grooming Oil for shaving. It’s an effective facial oil too. Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentre is my all-time favourite moisturiser and I use Emma Hardie Moringa Cleansing Balm and The Ordinary Retinol 1% in Squalane daily.

Amy Falconer investigates medical grade facials at Dr Nestor’s Medical Cosmetic Centre

M

y teenage years weren’t particularly kind to me. I had a heavy dose of acne that scarred me badly. Unfortunately, it continued into adulthood too. It’s now semi under control, minus the odd hormonal break out, but you’d never catch me without a full face of makeup, I’m just not that kind of girl. Over the years, I’ve tried countless face creams, facials and gadgets to help even out my red, blotchy, scarred skin to no avail. Then I was introduced to medical grade facials by Dr Nestor at his clinic on Dundas Street, and more specifically, the Carbon Laser Facial which claims to leave skin smoother, softer and firmer. So, in a constant quest for the Holy Grail of flawless skin, I book in for a series of three treatments for optimum results and therapist Helen applies liquid charcoal all over my face before getting to work with the laser. The idea is that the laser penetrates deep down to cleanse,

52

exfoliate, refine pores and stimulate collagen production to even out skin tone, reduce acne-causing bacteria and lighten any pigmentation. It’s pretty much painless, only slightly nippy on the nose, and has no downtime whatsoever. After the first treatment, my skin felt softer but it was after the third session that I really noticed the difference. My blotchy complexion is now clear and all the little bumps and spots have smoothed out. I’m happy and surprised by the results in equal measures. To have my skin in such great condition for the first time in my adult life is transformative.

READER OFFER i-on readers can get a series of three Carbon Laser Facials for the price of two and pay £240 instead of £360. Just quote ‘i-on’ on booking. To find out more about the treatments, pop into visit Dr Nestor’s Medical Cosmetic Centre on 53 Dundas Street, Edinburgh, or call 0131 467 1450. More details can be found at drnestor.co.uk.

Meet the Maker INTRODUCING THE FACES BEHIND OUR FAVOURITE LOCAL FOODS

WHO Matt & Ish of Ocelot WHAT Beautiful and delicious, ethical and sustainable chocolate, made in Edinburgh. WHY We’re both fundamentally greedy and, as far as we’re concerned there is no better way to spend your money and time than cooking and eating delicious food. But it has to be good ‘slow’ food - the stuff that nurtures you and makes you happy in the moment. Quality dark chocolate does both of those things, and we’re proud to produce something that brings people joy. HOW We started the business in our kitchen five years ago, wrapping the bars in cellophane and then lugging them on to the bus in a granny trolley to sell at local markets. We now operate from a 3,000sqft factory and, along with our team of four, we make and send our chocolate to 15 countries worldwide.

WE’RE PROUD TO PRODUCE SOMETHING THAT BRINGS PEOPLE JOY”

SIGNATURE DISH Pasta is the ultimate comfort food for us, so it would probably be a slow cooked ragu made with local lamb mince, lots of sweet white onions, fresh rosemary and white wine, stirred through just-cooked parpadelle and topped with parmesan.

knobs of turmeric, homemade cultured butter and kefir, parmesan, tahini, half a jar of capers, sea buckthorn juice from East Lothian, and a bottle of something crisp in case the moment arises. FOODIE SHOPS We shop almost every day at the New Leaf coop in Marchmont which is like an Aladdin’s cave of local and organic fruit and veg, milk and yogurt, spices, unfiltered olive oils, and basically everything you could ever need. Just around the corner is Eddie’s Seafood Market which is also brilliant. Our little boy loves looking at all the weird and wonderful specimens. And we buy sourdough bread from Company Bakery - it must be up there with the best in the world. EATING OUT Edinburgh Food Studio is a wonderful experience and our go-to for a special occasion. Otherwise we’ll go anywhere we can get a bowl of Scottish oysters, buttery langoustines and a nicely cooked piece of fish. ocelotchocolate.com

FOOD AND DRINK

For the tastiest street food…

from the owners of Hanam’s, Pomegranate, Laila’s Bistro and Souq. It offers healthy Middle Eastern Buddha bowls, mezze, Lebanese breads and shawarma, seven days a week from noon to 11pm. For a weekend blow out (or a hangover busting feast), The Pitt, Edinburgh’s famous streetfood market, takes over a warehouse and yard in Leith every Saturday (12-10pm) and Sunday (11am-7pm). Our favourite trader has to be Pitt Steak whose trademark Steak on Chips with gremolata is worth queuing for.

Bross Bagels

Ting Thai Caravan on Teviot Place never disappoints with its, authentic Thai street food and whilst it does have seating, you can also grab dishes to go. Get there early to avoid the students and try the Small Box with marinated grilled chicken, lemongrass, ginger, lime leaf, cha plu leaf, garlic, coriander and coconut milk, £4.20 – it’s delicious. For a flavour of Middle Eastern street food, Pomegranate Express at 12 Nicolson Street is a newish arrival in town

Gannet & Guga

For the ultimate sandwiches…

Victor Hugo on the Meadows has been serving up its signature pastrami on rye since it first opened in 1955. The mammoth sandwich bursting with meat, cheese and sweet gherkins is known as the best pastrami sandwich in town – but the café/deli has plenty more on its menu too. If the Meadows seems like a mission, you’ll be pleased to hear they’re about to open the doors to another café on George Street. Also opening a second branch for carb-loving city dwellers, cheese toastie haven Meltmongers has expanded beyond its original café/ takeaway on Bruntsfield Place with a new outpost at 138 Dundas Street. The Philly cheese steak melt, £6.95, with slow cooked shin of beef, fried peppers, crispy onions and mature cheddar is phenomenal – let’s just forget the calories. Bross Bagels is another must eat destination for carb loving locals. Now with delis in Porty, Leith and the West End, you’ll find homemade gourmet bagels like

the Porkin’ Chick’ (sliced chicken breast, chorizo, smoked Applewood cheese, dill pickles, rocket & Mama Bross’ Rock Sauce), £5.50, as well as weekend specials in all their shops. Gannet & Guga at New Waverley on East Market Street is another great gourmet sandwich bar offering mouth-watering combos such as hot smoked salmon,

Civerinos Slice

pickled beetroot and a snappy horseradish mayonnaise, £5.50, made fresh to order and served on a choice of locally baked French bread. The signature Vietnamese summer rolls are also pretty special and you can get a mix box of three for £6.

For proper pizza…

You’ll find tasty, freshly made pizza at Civerinos Slice on Forrest Road and, oh boy, it’s good. Slices (bigger than your head) start at £3.85 offering the perfect combo of New York Grandma Slice, made from a thin layer of dough stretched into an oiled Sicilian pizza pan, topped sparingly with 100 per cent shredded mozzarella, hand pulped San Marzano tomatoes, chopped garlic and olive oil, and baked until the top bubbles and the bottom crisps, plus a Coke Zero for £6.50 everyday. On South Clerk Street and Rose Street, there’s wood fired ovens and hand-crafted pizzas at Dough. Get one of their ever-changing specials delivered or grab a slice and salad if you’re passing.

For something a little different…

Inspired by an appreciation for great food and a passion for good oldfashioned hospitality, Good & Proper Deli Co on Raeburn Place offers everything from quiche to frittata, salads and delicious homemade sausage rolls, £4.50. Forget the cheap versions; we’re talking a meaty combo of chicken, pork, basil and parmesan which will change the way you look at sausage rolls forever. For a lighter option, the North African spiced roasted squash salad with chickpeas, dates and pomegranate, £7.50, is a great takeaway option for sunny days in the Botanics just up the road.

Sharing the love WHY WHITE HORSE OYSTER & SEAFOOD BAR IS DARING TO BE DIFFERENT

W

hite Horse Oyster & Seafood Bar, on the site of the oldest inn on the Royal Mile, has been making noise on the restaurant scene since it opened its doors nearly two years ago. It’s dared to be a little bit different from other seafood restaurants by offering a variety of small plates which are made for sharing. And it’s paying off nicely. This serious contender for ‘best seafood restaurant in Edinburgh’ has just introduced new dishes that we’re literally chomping at the bit to try… Here’s why.

HAPPY DAYS

£1 OYSTERS If you’re a fan of oysters then you’ll love the Buck A Shuck happy hour every Monday to Thursday (4-6pm). You can eat your way around the UK with oysters from Lindisfarne, Carlingford, Loch Fyne and Caledonian, all for £1 each. Of, if you prefer, there are some deliciously dressed oysters on the menu including grilled oyster with nduja and pickled fennel, or oyster tempura with baby gem, wasabi mayo, ponzo, and pickled ginger.

A THING OF BEAUTY

CHARRED OCTOPUS We love braised octopus and the slower it’s cooked, the more tender it becomes. Perhaps the most underrated seafood around, it’s full of flavour and tastes

62

great served simply with smoked mayo and sea herbs. 100% insta-friendly too. If you haven’t tried it yet, make sure you do – at least once.

FRESH AND LOCAL

THE VERY BEST SEAFOOD Razor clams, lobster, hand-dived scallops…. And they’re just for starters. Or how about some sea trout? Delicately cured, it’s a unique dish with a kick of spice brought by the charred corn and jalapeno salsa.

NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

TEQUILA The drinks menu is serious business at White Horse and in keeping with the seafood theme, you’ve got to try their take on a margarita, the Seaweed Tommy’s; a moreish mix of Ocho Blanco tequila, lime juice, agave syrup and smoked seaweed salt, served with a large, branded ice cube.
