INTRODUCTION
i-on this month Our cover this month was shot by top photographer Adrian Myers and it’s a teaser for our Athleisure fashion story on pages 38. Sportswear has gone mainstream and, yes, it really is ok to don designer trainers and leggings without hitting the gym. Today’s sportswear has never looked so good. If you hadn’t already guessed this month’s issue is a fitness and wellbeing special and we’re here to help put a spring in your step. Ever considered a marathon? You can read where, when and why (or why not) to do one in our feature on page 34. If you hate the gym but dream of shifting the pounds we also give you some quirky alternatives that include aerial arts and kangoo jumps (p60). And look at some other fun events to get you off the sofa and out of the pub this summer (p24). For those feeling like this sounds far too energetic for them we also have top tips from interior designer Sian Parry Jones on how to work rustic chic. You can also cook yourself happy and healthy with recipes from food bloggers the Hemsley sisters, Amelia Freer, Andrew Cooper and Joe Wicks – all of whom have just released rather tasty recipe books. And of course our Lifestyle Edit pages give you the lowdown on the latest openings, news and events happening in Aberdeen (p82), Dundee (p86), Edinburgh (p88), Glasgow (p102), St Andrews (p106) and Stirling (p108).
Next month we’re back with a food and drink special so if you have a favourite bar, restaurant, top deli or much loved coffee shop, anything, we want to hear from you. Email editorial@ionmagazine.co.uk or tweet us using #i_online with your suggestions. Congratulations to last month’s competition winner Elaine Honeyford who won a luxury overnight stay at the Witchery in Edinburgh. This month one reader will win a Genesis bike courtesy of Ronde Bicycle Outfitters. Turn to page 16 for details on how to enter. Until next month, enjoy i-on and make sure you check out our new website, now live at www.ionmagazine.co.uk.

Five things the i-on office are excited about this month 1
Disposable tents – Forget the stress of dismantling your mudlogged tent this festival season. The clever people at KarTent make sustainable cardboard tents, sturdy enough to cope with three days of rain.
2
Hiking trophies – Proud of your achievement? Nicetrails in Barcelona will transform the GPS file from your most impressive hike or mountain climb into a 3D terrain model (pictured above), complete with your route mapped.
3
Lo-fi Spotify – While the music streaming service may have revolutionised how we consume music, a few flies in the audio ointment remain. One of the biggest bugbears is having to carry around your smart device. The Mighty is crowdfunding at the moment and offers 48 hours of Spotify in a tiny MP3 player-sized device.
4
Coffee style – Behold the Trinity One; a future design classic in black walnut and stainless steel. It combines a number of brewing methods to make top notch coffee.
5
Tommy’s return – Hollywood heroes Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy are back on our screens this month, heralding the third season of Peaky Blinders.

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds Next month Noel Gallagher will be 49, and as much as thousands of fans out there are clamouring for an Oasis reunion, he’s on to a good thing where he is with his High Flying Birds. MUSIC
F
or 20 years, Steve Mason has charted a maverick course in music that’s taken him to the edge of the mainstream and into a phase of underground but enduring respect. Everything he does is deserving of attention, and particularly if you’re a fan of his first group the Beta Band, hearing his dreamy vocal is like sitting down in the pub with an old friend. This tour comes in support of his recommended new album Meet the Humans, which was released in February. Originally part of the East Neuk of Fife scene which gave birth to artists like James Yorkston, King Creosote, the latter’s Fence Collective and more recently affiliated members Django Django, Mason is a Fifer by upbringing. He formed the Beta Band with Gordon Anderson, aka Lone Pigeon, in St Andrews in the mid ‘90s, but the band became more associated with Edinburgh when Anderson left and John Maclean, Robin Jones and Richard Greentree were added. In particular, they made Edinburgh College of Art their base of operations. The Betas’ short but sweet story has been well told elsewhere, and the continuing familiarity of a band which disbanded 12 years ago shouldn’t be allowed to distract from how prolific Mason has been since. Yet for a few brief years they were a very special band, whose highlights included; three acclaimed EPs in 1997 and 1998; a scene in the movie High Fidelity which revolved around – at star and fan John Cusack’s insistence – how great their track Dry the Rain is; and an underwhelming 1999 debut album, followed by two
very underrated follow-ups in Hot Shots II (2001) and Heroes to Zeroes (2004). In December 2004 the Beta Band played their final gig at Edinburgh’s Liquid Room, but already Mason had an alias under which he recorded more experimental material. As King Biscuit Time, he fused elements of folk, rap, electronica and psychedelia in a manner which was engagingly playful and focused, but perhaps not as geared towards commercial success. He released one album under the name, 2006’s Black Gold, on Creation Records founder Alan McGhee’s Poptones label, before switching his attention to the more satisfyingly electroinfluenced Black Affair project – the album Pleasure Pressure Point followed in 2008. Since 2009 Mason has recorded exclusively under his own name on Domino Records subsidiary Double Six, and amidst a career which has never been anything less than compelling he appears to have found a groove which works for him. His 2013 second album under his own name Monkey Minds in the Devil’s Time was a career high, combining the heavily political protest beats of Fight Them Back with the gospel tenderness of Oh My Lord. Meet the Humans is a more understated, even mellow record, but its success rests entirely on Mason’s continuing ability as a unique and attention grabbing songwriter. Steve Mason plays the Liquid Room, Edinburgh, on Tuesday 26 April. The album Meet the Humans is out now on Double Six. stevemasontheartist.com.

GOING THE DISTANCE April marks the start of marathon season with events kicking off in Paris, Boston and London. Whilst there’s no shortage of marathons around the world, there are some iconic races that runners dream of completing. We spoke to a mixture of veterans and newbies to find out why they went the 26 mile distance.

NEW YORK
Runner: John Mancini, DJ/ videographer/film editor from West Lothian Date completed: November 2010 Previous marathons: Six including New York, London, Berlin and Paris “I suffer from arthritis and from 2005-2010 I’d often spend half the week in bed with the illness. After the release of a new drug and a fresh lease of life, I decided to challenge myself with the NYC marathon. I booked my place through a sports travel company for around £800 and started the six months training. “I was badly prepared and not experienced enough for what lay ahead - especially the long hills in the final five to six miles - but the atmosphere, supporters and crowds were incredible. Running through the five boroughs of New York was definitely a highlight, each had a different vibe. Starting at Staten Island and ending in Central Park was pretty special too. When I finished, I didn’t even celebrate; I ate and went to bed. The experience was fantastic but I’d been to hell and back. Since then I’ve run five more marathons including Berlin, Paris and London last year.” For further information on the TCS New York City Marathon on 06 November 2016 visit www.tcsnycmarathon.org
LONDON
Runner: Zoe Schmid, works in media, from Dundee Date completed: April 2010 Previous marathons: Five including London, New York, Rome and Edinburgh “I decided to run a marathon because I wanted to do something a bit mad. I’d never run more than 10k before but I believed it was something I could do. I did 14 weeks of strict training and made the decision to give up alcohol. I knew if I didn’t knuckle down, I wasn’t going to make it. “I was very lucky in that I got my place in the race through the ballot - it was only the second time I had applied and it normally takes a little longer. The route takes you along the Embankment, past Big Ben and finishes in Hyde Park and the atmosphere is electric. You almost feel bathed in love from all the supporters. 35

I thought the New York crowd were amazing but the people in London were phenomenal. When you cross the line, everything feels broken but as the hours go by the elation grows and the pain subsides and before too long you’re planning the next one.” For info on the London marathon in April 2017 visit www.virginmoneylondonmarathon.com.
PARIS
Runner: Sarah Ormerod, PR Consultant from Aberdeen Date completed: March 2012 Marathons ran: Dublin and Paris “I’d been running seriously for about three years, only doing 10ks. I ran my first half marathon in 2009 and decided at that point it was now or never. My first marathon was really about ticking a box on the list of life ‘to-dos’ whilst 36
raising some money in the process for Macmillan Cancer. I got the bug though, and since then, long distance running has become part of my life. “Paris was my first marathon and I followed an online training programme strictly for about three to four months. I had no idea what to expect and expected it to be horrendously painful and to ‘hit the wall’ that everyone talks about. It wasn’t like that at all – I loved every second. I was bowled over by that sense of being part of something great, and experiencing that feeling of accomplishment alongside so many other people. We started at the Champs Elysées and finished at L’Arc de Triomphe, at one point we ran under the Eiffel Tower, it was beautiful. I felt such a huge sense of accomplishment, there’s no better feeling than crossing the finish line after 26 miles.” For further information on the Paris marathon in April 2017, visit the website www.schneiderelectricparismarathon.com.

DUBAI Runner: Charlie Simpson, regional sales manager in Dubai, from Edinburgh. Date completed: January 2016 Previous marathons: None “I trained for four months and worked my way up with regards to races, starting with a 10k race then a half marathon. I saw the marathon as a great way to keep fit but most importantly, I ran it for a very special cause, having lost my father-in-law to bowel cancer. He always inspired me. He even completed the London Marathon in under five hours at the age of 70. “The route in Dubai was the tough part, having landmarks like the Burj Khalifa in the distance seemed a lifetime away and the heat was a killer: by 9am it was up to 28 degrees. It’s not the most exciting course, 13.5 miles one way and then 13.5 miles back so it was
slightly depressing seeing the pros coming back on the home stretch when we still had two hours to go. I hit the wall at the 30k mark and stopped to stretch. My hips were killing me. Just at that moment, a voice shouted ‘Charlie Simpson get moving!’ It turned out to be a friend that teaches PE in Dubai who just happened to be standing right there, right then. That encouragement helped, support is really important.” For details on the Dubai marathon in January 2017 visit www.dubaimarathon.org.

me motivated. After completing a couple of half marathons I signed up for the Edinburgh marathon and trained for about 16 weeks. “Along the route you see plenty of famous landmarks - Holyrood palace, the Scottish Parliament, Arthur’s Seat (an extinct volcano) - and then you take in the seaside air as you pass the beach at Portobello promenade. A positive is that it’s a pretty flat marathon which makes things slightly easier. The physical pain was the worst part but that was balanced with the support from the crowds and the sense of achievement. I’d love to run another one and recommend it to anyone, it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done.” For further information on the Edinburgh marathon on 28/29 May 2016, visit www.edinburghmarathon.com.

“The Midnight Sun Marathon is in Tromso, north Norway. What makes this marathon different is that it starts at 8pm so you finish after midnight, but because there’s full daylight 24 hours a day it feels like the afternoon. It’s totally surreal. “Tromso is an incredibly beautiful place - you see a lot of mountain scenery and vibrantly green landscape throughout the race. At times it did feel quite isolated but loads of local families cheer you on and as the marathon passes through the town at the start, middle and finish your loved ones can watch without having too long to wait. If you’re celebrating afterwards you can enjoy some very expensive drinks in town with the friendly locals. And if you decide to stay on after the marathon there are loads of activities like whale and bear watching, but we flew off to the med for a bit of warm sun and recovery time. My next challenge? The Berlin marathon for Shelter in September.” For details on Midnight Sun Marathon on Saturday 18 June visit www.msm.no/midnightsun-marathon.242498.en.html.

ou know a trend is here to stay when not only does it gain its own dictionary definition but it's also embraced by the most urbane of urban dressers. Take athleisure, the casual sporty look that's winning fans from both sexes. It has made the Merriam-Webster dictionary with this definition: 'casual clothing designed to be worn both for exercising and for general use' and Victoria Beckham has joined husband David in personally embracing the look. As the designer accepted applause at her recent catwalk show, she did so without her obligatory pencil skirt and skyscraper heels opting instead for a funnel neck slouchy sweater and, shock, plimsolls. So why the major style rethink? While the former Posh Spice has gone on record to say she can simply no longer 'do' heels, like the majority of people adopting this new, relaxed way of dressing, athleisure is part of the bigger 'wellness' moment and the family Beckham has been photographed leaving the achingly trendy SoulCycle studio in New York. Ever since the Kids from Fame danced their way on to our screens and Jane Fonda felt the burn (ask your mum), athleisure in some form or other has been with us appearing under various guises; sports luxe, sports utility, sports core, sport chic... to name just four. But it’s only in the latter few years that the trend has become so potent that it’s near on epidemic. That’s largely due to the fact that athleisure is a fundamental component of the omnipresent ‘wellness’ lifestyle promoted by the likes of Ella Woodward, the Hemsley sisters and clean eating guru James Duigan (turn to page 74 for some recipes if you want 47
FASHION
to follow suit). Just as Goths wear black, listen to emo music and generally look as unhealthy as they can, the wellness influencers and followers are easily recognised by their form fitting yoga pants, Nutribullet carriers and glow. It's a lifestyle that cuts it with both sexes and although there's more opportunity for women to fully embrace athleisure in all areas of their life, the male wellness disciplines needn't look too shabby either with cult brands like Lululemon, Adidas Yeezy and Outdoor Voices offering genuinely exciting options. The athleisure appeal is easy to see with drawstring waists and stretchy fabrics making the garments comfortable to wear and the opportunity to layer the look means you can reveal or conceal as much of your body as you dare or care too. “Leggings and yoga pants are becoming an attractive alternative to the skinny jean, which has been our ‘go to’, multitasking wardrobe staple for a decade, not only because of their sporty style credentials but also because they are just so comfortable,” says Marks & Spencer head of design, Soozie Jenkinson. “Sports brands focusing on women such as Sweaty Betty have helped redefine the female sports market by selling fashionable and feminine gym and yoga clothes that are comfortable,” Amanda Lintott from Mintel said. “The rise in availability of attractivelooking sportswear for women has also meant that women are using these items both for sports and as fashionable leisurewear, which feeds into a trend for more multipurpose styles of clothing in everyday life.” 48
The athleisure appeal is easy to see with drawstring waists and stretchy fabrics making the garments comfortable to wear That versatility is addictive and makes athleisure possibly the ultimate in day-to-night dressing. Take my outfit today. As I type I’m wearing black leggings, a longline vest top, short sleeved baggy sweater, layered with a knee-length slouchy cardigan and accessorised with a pair of Ash wedge trainers and a printed scarf. Perfect for i-on’s creative office environment and to switch it up for after work drinks, all I need to do is ditch the cardigan, swap the trainers for heels and add a statement earring and clutch. A trip to the gym would be just as easy and the perfect excuse to invest in some Adidas neon trainers. Wearing athleisure to work for men could prove a little trickier but at Pitti Uomo, Italy's menswear fashion fair, the dapper dons teamed their cutaway collars and ‘70s inspired blazers with tailored joggers. If that's a stride too far, males keen to carry the look to work could test the water cooler reaction by layering a fine knit cashmere hoodie under a blazer – just keep it slogan free. One parting caveat if you are planning on doing gym duty in your daytime athleisure look, do pack a change. Sweat marks may well be a personal badge of honour for your physical endeavours but they are never, ever a coveted fashion accessory.

SKIN TIGHT
THE WONDERS OF COLLAGEN
WHAT IS COLLAGEN? Collagen accounts for 75 per cent of youthful skin. It provides the structure supporting the epidermis and gives your skin its youthful fullness. As your body gets older, it loses the ability to produce new collagen so skin loses its elasticity and begins to wrinkle and age. Results show that replenishing collagen can help slow down the ageing process. Nice. A TALL GLASS OF… COLLAGEN The message is simple: to do the best for our skin, we must look beyond classic skincare treatments. Skinade has helped to define a new way to look after your skin – from the inside out. They have developed a collagenbased skincare drink, available in two versions: a ready to drink 150ml bottle and a concentrated 15ml travel sachet that you dilute in a glass of water.
Following an independent 90 day trial of liquid collagen supplement Skinade, participants saw, on average, a 25.5 per cent increase in collagen density, a 34 per cent increase in skin hydration and a 28 per cent improvement in skin elasticity, when compared with a control group not taking Skinade”
Dr Paul Banwell (www.banwellclinic.com) is a cosmetic and plastic surgeon with a special interest in skin health.
Paul says: “Liquid supplements are an interesting new development in the skin health arena and, though I was sceptical at first, we have seen some great results with patients from the Banwell Clinic. Most skin supplements on the market are based upon a collagen delivery mechanism which trigger the body’s own collagen production as part of a natural feedback system. An optimal skin drink should contain a number of co-factors (and nutrients to really help treat skin conditions from the inside while still improving the elasticity and density of the collagen structure and rebalancing the skin’s natural levels of hydration. We trialled Skinade with our patients and have had some astounding results in terms of improved skin appearance and patient satisfaction.”

he benefits of exercise are well documented but did you know exercise can actually make you look younger? It sounds too good to be true but that's the findings of scientists at Ontario's McMaster University. As part of an experiment, the skin of 29 men and women ranging in age from 20 to 84 was analysed and when researchers sorted skin samples based on exercise habits, they found that people over 40 who exercised regularly had skin comparable to that of people half their age. And the good news doesn’t stop there. In another experiment, researchers put sedentary volunteers, age 65 and older, on a three month exercise program requiring them to jog or cycle twice weekly at a moderately strenuous pace. Before-andafter biopsies showed that the condition of their skin improved over the course of the experiment – clear evidence that it’s never too late for your skin to reap the benefits of exercise. The reasons behind the skin improvements is not completely clear but researchers suspect that multiple myokines — substances created by working muscles — play a key role, making it unlikely that any pill, potion or injection will ever replicate the skin benefits of a good workout. But a good workout doesn’t only help turn back time, it can help with any number of skin issues and that instant, healthylooking post workout glow is undeniable. So what gives us that glow? It’s quite simple really. When your 54

heart really starts pumping, the living layers of your skin receive a special delivery of oxygenated blood and nutrients. Essentially your circulation is improved, which helps with your skin’s overall glow. While exercise on its own can work wonders, Dalton Wong, personal trainer to Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence, believes by adding water to your workout you’ll truly maximise its benefits. "It's not just that it helps you train better - no one can work out if they're not properly hydrated - it makes your skin look better, too. Conversely, if you're training without drinking enough water, you'll damage your skin pretty quickly," he advises. So how can you tell if you're drinking enough at the gym? A quick test is to pinch the skin on the back of your hand; if it springs back fast, you're hydrated. If it’s on the slow side or stays pinched, sip up. Another positive upside from the increased circulation is that the skin starts to produce more natural oils, providing that postexercise glisten as the sweat glands help get rid of toxins and general gunk that can clog pores. So do cleanse or wash off the dirt as soon as possible post workout paying special attention to the face, chest area and back. Another caution we often neglect to consider, especially given Scottish climate, is the necessity of a high SPF if exercising outdoors. It may look overcast but those harmful rays can still push through the cloud so keep exposed skin covered and leave ‘the burn’ for your muscles, not your skin. 55

intend to start performing but after the first year I couldn’t help myself, it’s completely addictive. It can be a fantastic hobby and a great way to stay fit. I train at least three times a week now as part of a professional collective but when I started it was just with a weekly class.” Tempted to give it a go? Apparently people of all shapes and sizes can do aerial arts. “The key is to stick with it,” explains Blaise. “If you do it’ll completely transform your body as it requires you to build a strong upper body and core, your legs get a good workout too. “I
’ve been an interior designer for over 15 years as a hobby and five years as a business. Four years ago I was asked to develop what is now Fletcher’s Cottage Spa within the grounds of Archerfield House in East Lothian. As my first project, it’s the one I am most proud of as I was involved from start to finish. I’m also particularly proud of Westward, a beautiful private home in Jersey. It’s a complete contrast to my work with Fletcher’s. “My signature style is rustic chic. I like to use reclaimed wood because it can be used in so many forms; old potato boxes can suddenly become a beautiful wall, the same goes for old floorboards and pallet boxes. Reusing wood in different ways can create texture, interest and a fantastically warm feel to a room. It’s also easily paired with a variety of contrasting, modern accents - be it through lighting or soft furnishings. In my home in Somerset I’ve combined reclaimed wood with old stone, tin, old mirrors and a fairly neutral pallet to keep it light, airy and textural. “The kitchen is my favourite room in the house. It’s an open plan space with dining 69

but these have been separated with a glass panel screen so the feeling of ‘space’ hasn’t been compromised in any way. With vaulted ceilings it’s quite airy but a combination of textures and styles has created a really warm and inviting space. It’s great for entertaining, cooking, eating - even working. There’s quite an industrial feel with oak beams clad in steel, oversized ceiling lights and the wall in the cooking area has these fantastic large Parisian tin ceiling tiles from a reclamation yard in Paris. I’m particularly fond of the central unit which my excellent carpenter fixed a huge old plank of elm on to, further emphasising the rustic contrast. “Whilst I adore my home, I also love Llandudno in Cape Town, South Africa. I go there every year with friends and family. Naturally the climate is preferable but it’s absolutely beautiful there too.” Find out more at www.sianparryjones.com.

SPICY MISO SALMON WITH BROCCOLI RICE This flavoursome and satisfying dish by food blogging duo Melissa and Jasmine Hemsley can be made in one pan in just 10 minutes. INGREDIENTS 2 teaspoons coconut oil 2 x 300g wild salmon fillets (skin on) Sea salt and black pepper 1 large head of broccoli (about 350g) 2 tablespoons of water 2 spring onions (finely sliced) or 1 tablespoon fresh chives FOR THE SPICY MISO SAUCE 1 tablespoons unpasteurised miso paste (to taste) 2 teaspoons maple syrup 4 tablespoons hot water 1 tablespoon lemon juice A pinch of chilli powder or cayenne pepper A pinch of sea salt or dash of tamari, to taste METHOD 1. For the broccoli rice, grate the broccoli – including the stalk – into rice sized pieces, either by hand (using the coarse side of a grater) or in a food processor (using the S-curved blade or grater attachment). Set aside. 2. Melt the coconut oil in a wide frying pan on a medium heat, season the salmon with salt and pepper, then fry, and skin side down, for 3 minutes until crispy. Carefully turn over and fry the flesh side for 1–2 minutes until just cooked through. Transfer from the pan onto individual warmed plates and keep warm. 3. Tip the grated broccoli straight into the same pan with the water, turn up the heat, cover with a lid and leave to steam for 3 minutes, stirring halfway through, until tender but still with a little bite. Season to taste with salt and pepper and then add the spring onions or chives. 4. While the broccoli rice is cooking, stir or whisk the miso sauce ingredients together in a bowl, or shake in a jam jar with the lid on. Divide the broccoli rice between the plates, pour the sauce over the fish and serve immediately. Hemsley & Hemsley - Good + Simple by Melissa and Jasmine Hemsley, Ebury Press, £25. 75

CHICKPEA AND AUBERGINE SALAD This super tasty recipe from Amelia Freer celebrates the chickpea, which is an excellent source of fibre, protein and iron. SERVES: Two as a main or four as a side INGREDIENTS ½ small red onion (finely sliced) 1 large aubergine (cut in half lengthways and sliced into thin half-moons) A good glug of extra virgin olive oil juice and zest of 1 lemon 2 x 400g tins of chickpeas (drained and rinsed) 2 large fresh tomatoes (cubed) 1 bunch of fresh parsley (chopped) 2 teaspoons garlic-infused oil 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Flaked almonds, to serve METHOD 1. Cover the onion with water and set aside for half an hour – this reduces the harshness of its taste when eaten raw. 2. Next prepare the aubergine. Spread the half moon slices out on a baking tray and brush them with olive oil. Place under a high grill for five minutes, then take out and brush again with a mixture of olive oil and lemon juice – you can make it quite wet, as the aubergine will absorb all the liquid. Place back under the grill until the edges of the slices are slightly blackened and the flesh is soft. Set aside in a large bowl 3. On the same baking tray, spread out the chickpeas and grill until they’re golden. Add them to the bowl of aubergine. 4. Dice the tomatoes into small cubes and add to the bowl along with the parsley, drained red onion slices, garlic oil, cayenne pepper, remaining lemon juice, zest, salt and pepper and mix well. Serve warm, with a sprinkling of flaked almonds. Cook. Nourish. Glow by Amelia Freer, Michael Joseph, £20. © Amelia Freer 2016.

INDIAN SPICED LAMB Buy cutlets not chops, they have a better meat-to-fat ratio says Joe Wicks, creator of this tasty recipe. And if you have any leftovers, this is delicious the next day, served at room temperature with a big salad. SERVES: One
INGREDIENTS 150g natural yoghurt 2 tbsp ground almonds 2 tsp garam masala 1 tsp smoked paprika Salt and pepper 4 lamb cutlets, about 200g each Large handful of baby spinach leaves 4 cherry tomatoes (halved) ¼ cucumber (sliced into batons) ½ bunch of coriander, leaves only (roughly chopped) Juice of 1 lemon METHOD 1. Preheat your grill to maximum and line a baking tray with baking parchment (this is just to make washing up easier). 2. Place the yoghurt, ground almonds, garam masala and smoked paprika in a bowl, along with a generous amount of salt and pepper. Mix thoroughly. 3. Smother the lamb cutlets with the spiced yoghurt, then place on the prepared baking tray. Slide the tray under the grill and cook the cutlets for 3–4 minutes on each side, by which time the spiced yoghurt should have browned in a few places. 4. Meanwhile, make a quick salad by gently tossing the spinach, tomatoes and cucumber together in a bowl. Pile the salad onto a plate. 5. Remove the lamb cutlets from the grill and leave to rest for 1-2 minutes, then sit them on top of the salad. Serve up with a scattering of coriander and a squeeze of lemon juice. 6. Serve with a big portion of your favourite greens such as kale, broccoli, mange tout or green beans. Lean in 15 by Joe Wicks, out now in paperback, Bluebird, £14.99.

ALL ABOARD THE CULTURE BUS
Good cultural festivals are a lot like buses, said no one… ever. But, unusually, there are three taking place around Aberdeenshire on the bank holiday weekend and they’re all crackers. The Look Again arts festival (28 April to 02 May) is a celebration of visual art and design with a series of events across the city including work from the Turner prize-winning collective, Assemble, the beautiful ‘Brutalist Playground’ by Simon Terrill and a whole host more. Get the full info at www.lookagainfestival.co.uk. If craft beer, cocktails, street food and live music are more your cultural cup of tea then on 30 April and 01 May you should head along to North Hop at the AECC. The bank holiday celebration was a big hit last year, not to be missed. Book a session at www. northhop.co.uk. Finally, the Spirit of Speyside festival is back, celebrating the national drink in every way imaginable with a weekend of events ranging from educational talks to in-depth tastings and whisky paired dining experiences. Look out for the new Beer Kitchen by Innis & Gunn now open on 10 South Tay Street, www.thebeerkitchen.co.uk.
Here's the deal: you bring your book to the pub, sit down and read for an hour. My life is so busy that this sounded heavenly. Admittedly I didn’t take the Jodi Picoult book I was actually reading but, with much excitement, I took myself to Brewdog on Panmure Street with my trusty Nancy Mitford tome under my arm, a page marked about a third of the way in so it didn't look like I'd just started it. For a Monday teatime, the pub was busy and by the time the reading started almost every seat was taken. It was quite delicious; there was peace and a collaborative feeling of quiet and happy endeavour. Towards the end of the reading hour, Mariel, the lovely young woman who arranges the event, introduced herself to any newcomers, and I exchanged smiles across the table with my fellow readers. But nobody even looked at my book or asked me about it. In fact, some people came, read and left, without talking to anyone. This surprised me but it had a lovely effect. Dundee's silent reading parties are literally just that - a chance to devote yourself to reading in the company of like-minded people. Having only recently heard about The Pantry, I feel like I’m last to the party. A Stockbridge culinary destination since 2013 it remains a firm favourite amongst locals, families (there’s a great play area for kids) and friends. It was talk about its recent refurbishment that lured me across town to sample its famed weekend brunch and lunch menu. With head chef Ian Henderson, who has worked at Michelin starred restaurant ABaC in Barcelona, at the helm, The Pantry clearly loves food. And it certainly comes across in the menu options and the use of fresh, local produce. The Sunshine on Stockbridge, £8.50, a seriously impressive dish of olive oil toast topped with fresh guacamole, slow roasted paprika tomato, spiced sweet potato, beetroot thins and pepper, is a culinary winner. The aptly named Pimp My Fried cooked breakfast, £10.50, is sure to satisfy the hungriest of appetites too. Along with a fresh makeover comes new evening opening hours every Thursday, Friday and Saturday and a new dinner menu; we’re already planning our return. THE ARCHES The word is out about Edinburgh’s New Waverley Arches, following the opening of two brand new hotels just along from the city’s coolest new shopping and eating destination. The 121-room hub by Premier Inn has now opened on Market Street, just off the Royal Mile - the first of the new urban concept hotels to launch outside London. A 127-room Premier Inn hotel has also opened next door to the hub, making it even easier to visit this fascinating part of Edinburgh’s Old Town, sandwiched between Waverley Station and the Royal Mile.
The latest tenant lined up for The Arches is Baba Budan, an independent coffee and doughnut shop. Named after a 16th century monk who, according to legend, smuggled coffee beans into Europe by strapping them to his stomach, Baba Budan opens in April, bringing a whole new coffee and eating experience to Edinburgh.
OPENING SOON!
Owner Craig Niblock commented: “At Baba Budan, we aim to be a member of the growing artisan coffee scene here in Edinburgh, and take pride in offering high quality drinks and food. The Arches is a brilliant location and offers a real alternative to those wanting something a little different from the norm. It feels more like a market than a high street.”

Dinner at Wee Buddha What: A new Asian/Scottish fusion restaurant in the New Town Price range: Starters from £2.90, mains from £6.90 words: Rebecca McCosh • photo: Susie Lowe
S
ome people find their zen doing the downward dog or meditating on mountain tops. Me? I’m at my most content with a belly full of good food. So when I heard a new Asian fusion restaurant had just opened in Edinburgh I booked a table. The Wee Buddha offers a variety of Asian/ Scottish fusion dishes served up tapas style for picking and sharing. Perusing the cutely named Wee ‘hings starter menu and unsure just how wee the wee ‘hings really were, I asked for the manager’s recommendations. His choice of dishes were served as and when they were ready, in-keeping with the laid back vibe of the restaurant. First up, the chicken and vegetable gyoza, £6.50, tasty little dunkable dumplings served with a soy and ginger sauce. 10/10 fingerlicking marks went to the garlic and chilli chicken wings, £6, however the stand-out starter was the salt and spicy squid, £7.50. Unlike the jaw-achingly chewy elastic I’ve had
elsewhere, these battered bites were light and tender with a spicy kick, eight tentacles strong. From the Bowls and Chopsticks main menu we opted for the traditional king prawns with Singapore rice noodles, £8.90 – juicy and delicious. The stir fry vegetables with bean curd and Thai jasmine rice in satay sauce, £6.90, was also a winner, sitting just the right side of spicy. No desserts were available that night which was a shame as I would have happily dived head first into their raspberry and chocolate roulade, £4.25. Instead, I finished the meal in a much more reserved manner with a simple Japanese green tea. Did I find my zen? Well, after over indulging a little, I did leave the restaurant with a bit of a Buddha belly, but having discovered a new dining spot, I definitely felt enlightened.

Lunch at The Archerfield Walled Garden What: A café-restaurant in East Lothian / Price range: Sandwiches from £6, mains from £10. words: Dean Newton
B
eing a father and a foodie can be tough, finding decent dining options when out with the offspring often leads to uninspired supermarket picnics or less than healthy options. Is it too much to ask for somewhere with child-friendly dining, tasty fresh seasonal produce grown on the grounds, a wealth of family activities and (important) an on-site brewery? Hyperbole aside, a glance at the menu for the café at the Walled Garden was a sight for sore eyes, an unexpected dining experience where you’d generally expect the same old nationwide photocopied list of fish and chips, sausage and mash et al. And wait, what’s this I see? Pairings? There’s wine pairings? Don’t mind if I do. The café at the Walled Garden sits between the deli, shop and glass front to the distillery, it’s bright and bustling; the ideal fuel stop for a family day out. I opted for the Cullen Skink, £6, a quality interpretation that eschewed heavy cream to let the ingredients do the heavy lifting, while Sophie’s earthy roast beetroot salad, £6.50, came with some oozing mounds of grilled Morangie brie and pickled carrot, a strong start. Mains then and I’m a sucker for a good burger. The Walled Garden’s John Gilmour beaut, £13.50, was surely that. The welltopped, well-seared patty tested the demibrioche ‘artisan bun’ which didn’t do a great job of holding it all together but was cracking 100
nonetheless. Sophie chose the pumpkin tortellini, £10, which was the height of winter comfort food. The pasta parcels with chestnut, Auld Lochnagar cheddar, roasted onion and garden sage butter were rich without being too heavy. Junior had the houmous, veggie sticks and oatcakes. He wore it well. TRIED & TESTED Hula Hooping words: Lucy Snow
ART ATTACK
If you think hula hoops are for kids, think again as this fun, childhood pastime is fast becoming the latest thing in fitness. It’s easy to understand why as once you get the hang of it, you can burn over 600 calories an hour and improve your balance and core. Armed with a weighted hoop I bought from Argos, I tried a £7 Hoop Dance Fitness class at Patrick Burgh Hall run by Glasgow Hula Hoop (they also offer Southside classes). I initially struggled to keep it up but after a bit of advice from instructor Kat, I was on my way. The weighted hoop was a little tough on my waist and one of the regulars did suggest a bit of padding around my middle until I got used to it. Kat’s enthusiasm was really infectious and, while pretty bushed, I was disappointed when the session was over. Over the next couple of days I was pretty sore but it was worth it as, whether real or imagined, I swear I saw the beginnings of some abs. Visit www.glasgowhulahoop. co.uk for more details or to book. 104

My Style, My Wa
y
Why is it that some people are just blessed? Take Emily Shakarji. Not only is she 5’9” of gorgeousness with a superior sense of style (as seen on her Typical Shak blog) but she’s also one of the nicest girls around. Here the Glasgow native talks her style, her way. “My style is pretty casual unless I’m going somewhere special,” explains Emily. “It can also be a little bit quirky - I like to take the odd fashion risk. I’m a sucker for designer shoes and bags and like to mix them with high street styles. As a blogger
I get to collaborate with high street/online retailers and a recent collaboration I particularly liked was one I did with Quiz, as seen here. I wore skinny fit dungarees with a nude bodysuit underneath, Adidas Superstars, my jumbo Chanel handbag and a fabulous faux feather jacket I got in the Topshop winter sale. I love this casual and comfy street style look, and the jacket just adds a little touch of glam. The dungarees are so versatile and can also be dressed up with a strappy heel.”

ST ANDREWS
FOODIE FINDS The cobbled streets of St Andrews are well-trodden. But regular visitors and locals know of another delight - that it is a foodie’s heaven full of venues offering quality, well sourced foods. Here are some favourites: FORGANS A culinary classic in the heart of St Andrews, Forgans (pictured) is reassuringly Scottish from the bothys you can hire for large parties, to the ceilidhs on Friday and Saturday nights. The ethos of working with the best local artisans who believe in sustainable agriculture shines through in all menus, whether ‘main’, ‘wee’ or ‘brunch’ versions. Cocktails are superb and the Forgan’s own ale adds to the sense of wholesome pride. Hot news is that Forgans is to open on Broughty Ferry’s coveted Brook Street, creating quite a buzz in Dundee. www.forgansstandrews.co.uk. FRASER’S FRUIT AND VEG Making great soup got a whole lot easier recently when Fraser’s fruit and veg shop opened on South Street. Fraser Reid combined two passions: wanting people to eat better 106
ingredients and a love of good soup. You can either buy his soup recipe book or buy a bag containing an individual recipe and all the ingredients you need. Favourites include leek, potato and roasted garlic, as well as smoky sweet potato and butter bean. www.frasersfruitandveg.co.uk. THE NEWPORT It’s not in St Andrews but the 10 to 15 minute drive to Newport-on-Tay is well worth it. MasterChef: The Professionals winner 2014 Jamie Scott’s first eatery has been open a matter of weeks and already causing a stir. Diners are treated to views across the silver Tay River and across Dundee, while perusing a five (£45pp) or eight course taster menu (£65pp), or from a selection of small dishes on an ad hoc basis. www.thenewportrestaurant.co.uk.

Tickets £15/13 at www.byretheatre.com.
An unexpected Mother’s Day gift of a voucher for the Kohler Waters Spa at St Andrews Old Course Hotel brought a whole new perspective on the historic town. A lofty perspective of sheer indulgence, as I relaxed in the rooftop hot tub, marvelling at the beautiful skyline. The pristine feeling of white robes and slippers in a five star hotel takes the shoulders down an inch or two, as did a signature massage. The deep relaxation and thermal suite was first class. A top tip: I used the remainder of my voucher on breakfast - normally a feast for staying guests but you can also pay as a visitor - and it was one of the best I’ve experienced anywhere in the world. A truly international mix of people and with a view of the Old Course to boot. www.oldcoursehotel.co.uk/spa/ kohler-waters-spa, Tel: 01334 468 067.

Spotlight on… Let us introduce or reacquaint you with the Stirling gem that is The Birds and the Bees. But, come the first sign of sunshine, it’ll be the fab beer garden that floats our boat. BIT AT THE BACK
Jo Morris, director of i-on, talks Micro scooters, parenthood and Robbie Williams
M
y two and half year old son has a mini Micro Scooter. Chances are there’s one in your garage if you’re a parent. What you might not have is an adult version. My son and I go scooting together, me encouraging him and pulling him along as he learns to balance. I try to ignore the wry looks as people observe the middle aged lady on the kid’s toy, desperate to blurt out my scooter story. But I can’t. They’re strangers and it would be weird. So I’ll tell you instead. The thing is my Micro Scooter is a design classic. It was never meant for kids. Its inventors created a mobility aid that was used by the Swiss army but it soon became a cool gadget for early adopters. And back in 2000 it was my best friend. An incredibly dull bout of ME meant I was exhausted and struggling to walk far. The answer to my lack of mobility lay in the Micro Scooter. Robbie Williams, at the top of his game was spotted scooting around London and in New York, Carrie herself (Sarah Jessica Parker) had one. I desperately wanted my own slice of shiny Swiss engineering so, piggy bank raided, I bought one from the only stockist in the UK- the uber cool Paul Smith shop in Covent Garden. It was the ultimate lifestyle gadget. I’d whizz around the city as people looked on – I imagined

in envy and admiration. And so it continued for a year or so until the market (and streets) were flooded with kids on cheap imitations. So I packed away my scooter and with it my tiny sliver of street cred became a relic in the loft. That was until my son demanded his very own three wheel version. It turns out that in the intervening 16 years, Micro Scooter has fought back against the imitators and reinvented itself as the quality three wheeled kids scooter, plus a new range for adults too. So I dug out my scooter, still shiny, and felt a rush of joy as I planted my foot and pushed off. #Scooters are not just for kids.
