OUR FAVOURITE FIND Scotland’s First Snorkel Trail Ok, so it’s not the Great Barrier Reef but it is a lot closer to home… This self-led snorkel trail has been created in the North West Highlands by the Scottish Wildlife Trust as part of its Living Seas programme and features nine beaches and bays on the coast of Wester Ross and Sutherland, including Tanera Mor in the Summer Isles, Camusnagaul and Achmelvich Bay. Beginner and advanced snorkelers can dive down to see the impressive variety of Scotland’s marine life; such as dogfish, barrel jellyfish and sea urchins. www.scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF… Keri-anne Payne

lympic open water marathon swimmer Keri-anne Payne hails from Manchester but moved to Edinburgh with her husband, David Carry, after he retired from swimming in 2012. Here she tells us about her love of swimming, training and relaxing.

on speed, endurance, power or technique. We usually work in four week cycles with each week building up and the fourth week being a recovery week. When we hit a goal we always celebrate - usually with pancakes at a Sunday morning breakfast club.

Why swimming? As a child all I wanted to do was impress my older brother and sister. They are the reason I learnt to push myself from a young age.

How do you relax? One Spa in Edinburgh is my absolute recovery and endurance at the same time. I enjoy some healthy food in the One Spa Café before I start my routine of stretching and relaxing in the sauna. The jets in the hydropool ease any sore muscles in my back and legs and the steam rooms flush out any remaining tension.

Is the sport a hobby or job? It has been my job for the past 15 years but it feels like a hobby as I absolutely love swimming. The amount of commitment needed is full on though – it’s at least 10 x two-hour pool sessions and 5 x one-hour gym sessions per week. How do you train? I have trained daily with a great squad of 20, along with our coaches Laurel Bailey and Kris Gilchrist, for the past four years. Each session has a different emphasis, either working

DRIVE OF DISCOVERY words Alan Douglas

lasgow has been my home for almost 40 years and I love the place, the people and discovering the beautiful countryside on its doorstep. So when Infiniti’s Glasgow dealership offered me the chance to test drive its latest British-built and engineered QX30 crossover, I jumped at the opportunity to take to the road. I left the M8 to head over the Erskine Bridge and then headed for the hills along the busy A82, passing the town of Balloch at the southern end of Loch Lomond and onto the hamlet of Arden. Next I turned right onto the A817 and headed uphill with the magnificent view of Loch Lomond behind me. With its long sweeping bends – and a few tight ones which have to be taken at the advised 40 mph speed – the road is renowned as one of the best scenic drives in Britain. Even Top Gear has

been filmed here. And it certainly gave the Infiniti the chance to go full throttle on the 10 mile stretch across Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park through the spectacular Glen Fruin. Just a few miles further on I looked down on to Gare Loch. During WWI the loch came into its own as a vital naval harbour and its deep water was excellent for testing submarines. Further down the road at the junction with the lochside A814, I came to the base itself, surrounded by miles of high security fencing. The military makes sure the roads are well kept and it shows. Heading back to Glasgow, I passed through the town of Dumbarton before re-joining the main A82 tourist route to return to the city and wave goodbye to the Infiniti. We’d had a good time together exploring some of the backwaters and brilliant roads which I’d forgotten were just a hop, skip and jump away. t says a lot about the dynamism and versatility of Glasgow’s music scene in the 21st century that a sound once associated with earthy barroom song writing and wistful indie-pop now sounds equally at home with lush, internationalist synth-pop which is absolutely deserving of a place high in 2016’s charts and playlists. This is the wonderfully named Bossy Love, otherwise known as 'Amandah, John and friends', a sleek but thrillingly original take on nailing the zeitgeist. The Amandah and John in question here have previous experience when it comes to doing just that. The former is Amandah Wilkinson, formerly of the band Operator Please, who formed in her hometown of Elanora on Australia’s Gold Coast and released two albums in 2007 and 2010, scoring their biggest hit (and an ARIA Award,

the Australian equivalent of a Brit) with the energetic punk-pop of Just a Song About Ping Pong. John, meanwhile, is John Baillie Jr, who was the singer with Glasgow’s indie-pop (they called it ‘fight pop’) should’ve-beens Dananananaykroyd for five years between 2006 and 2011. It would be nice to think that the pair of them will find the real success which has unfairly eluded them until now with Bossy Love. They’ve actually been a going concern since 2014, when Amandah – now based in London – sent John some of her vocals to work on and Baillie Jr, here acting as a producer and live drummer, started putting music to them. Things progressed well, and she travelled to Glasgow to work on them some more; at the time, The Guardian noted that she was “said to be a mechanical scientist” and he was “a part-time

barbecue restaurateur”, and that the early electrofunk groove Sweat It Out sounded like “Prince on a trampoline”. “We both love Prince, but we love a certain side of him that others don’t, the super weird, horny B-sides”, Baillie Jr told The Skinny earlier this year. Wherever the pair’s tastes happen to agree with one another, they fit perfectly as musical partners; super weird and horny is a good description, with a blend of electro-pop, future funk and gorgeously digital R&B flowing over Wilkinson’s addictively sassy vocal on tracks like Want Some and the recent Call Me Up. They’ve been remixed and released by Glasgow label boss and producer Nightwave, talked up by Radio 1, and their live shows are becoming the stuff

Cecilia Cardiff’s

Glasgow After studying in London during the '80s, Cecilia Cardiff returned to the Glasgow art scene, working as a designer and artist. Since turning to painting full time her work has exhibited regularly including The Royal Glasgow Institute (RGI) and The Paisley Arts Institute (PAI), gaining wide interest home and abroad, with Torchwood star and fellow Glaswegian John Barrowman a fan. Here she talks about art and the city. How did you get into painting? Art had always been a huge part of my life since I was a young child and although I worked as a graphic designer for 25 years I’d continued to carry out private commissions until busy family life took over. Then in June 2011 my husband, Douglas, bought me a set of acrylics and encouraged me to indulge in painting again. My mum was suffering from Motor Neurone Disease at the time and painting helped me relax.

What kind of art do you produce? Figurative – waiters, Glasgow characters and tenements in oils. Humour is important to my artwork and if I can make someone smile from my work, that makes me happy. Where do you find your inspiration? All around me. Urbanscapes and lifestyle inspire me. I love observing everyday life and the humour that lies behind individuals, their situations and personalities. Glasgow’s known for this vibrant art scene. Where would be your ‘must visit’ for viewing art? I enjoy open days at the various artists’ studios around Glasgow; the diverse works from paintings to pottery to jewellery are wonderful. What makes you a proud Dundonian? Its people come first; you’d struggle to find a more welcoming, friendly city. Also its ambition to become an internationally recognised destination, it has already been named the UK’s first City of Design by the United Nations, the universities’ constant expansion, the V&A’s imminent opening and the fantastic new waterfront developments. Biggest change you’ve seen in the city? The people of Dundee’s refreshing new pride in their city which is reflected by the number of independent businesses opening. Where you’d most like to live in the city? I already live in the West End, my favourite end of town. In the last four years, Andrew McMahon, aka Mackie, along with business partner Jakub, has opened four bars in the Westport area of the city - The West House, The D’Arcy Thompson, the Tinsmith and Gallery 48, picking up several awards and nominations along the way.

Three things I love in the city. 1. Magdalen Green. It has great views over the River Tay and also hosts the annual community led music festival “West Fest”, which showcases local talent and small artisan traders. 2. The Cheesery on Exchange Street. The shop not only supplies all our bars but has provided for many a great party. 3. One of our G & T’s from our new venue, Gallery 48, made with Arbikie Gin from Montrose, simply served with blueberries and lemon. It’s delicious.

finalist at the BBC New Comedy Awards 2014, Ava Vidal’s career has been an interesting journey. A prison guard for five years, she’s also now one of the UK’s leading stand up comedians and one of 250 comedy shows taking place at Aberdeen’s first Comedy Festival from 14 October to 05 November 2016. Why comedy? I started 13 years ago. After pretending to be a comedian at a BBC competition, I quickly realised people wanted to see me perform. I turned to Ask Jeeves (Google at the time) typing in ‘how to become a comedian’. I did my research and started to get lots of gigs in London; I now get to travel the world. What are you looking forward to most when visiting Aberdeen? Hopefully I’ll be able to spend some time there with my four-month-old daughter. I’ve been involving her in my shows but if she’s started crawling, it might be a quick visit.

Your must see shows at the festival? Tom Stade is fantastic. I’d like to see Hardeep Singh Kohli too. I’ve never seen him perform but would love to check out his material. What advice would you give to someone trying to make a career in comedy? Write what you know, have your own material and don’t be afraid to tweak your material – it may be a case of working it in a different way. Gin o’clock Just like the good old saying “The gift that keeps on giving” Scotland’s gin trail certainly seems to be doing just that. With four artisan gins now produced in Aberdeen city and shire, the North-east’s gin offering is blossoming.

Porter’s Gin is the first gin to be produced within the city in 100 years. It is already available in Harvey Nichols stores across the UK and was featured in Vogue’s 100th birthday edition. A premium gin, mainly created to become bartenders’ go-to gin, it’s also extremely popular with consumers. Definitely one to watch.

Scotland’s first tea gin, The Teasmith, is based in rural Udny and takes inspiration from a rich heritage tale which links Aberdeenshire with the tea trade. Launching in Autumn, this small batch craft gin is a definite must-have for the drinks cupboard.

A micro-distillery set up in a back garden in Deeside, Esker has been creating bespoke gin since last October, officially launching this summer. Using botanicals from Deeside including silver birch sap from the trees of the Kincardine Estate and milk thistle, the gin boasts stunning citrus and floral notes.

4 Created in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Indian Summer Gin uses one of the world’s most expensive spices, saffron, by weight, which is infused into the gin, giving it a warm, rich, aromatic flavour. It presents a golden-yellow hue and is bottled at a higher than usual 46% ABV.

Taking inspiration from celebrities such as Gigi Hadid, Linton & Mac’s style bar makeover has upped its game in delivering a wow-factor service to clients. Now one year old, it boasts eight core looks, all of which are fully customisable, and done in 30 minutes. Lucky enough to secure an appointment with creative director, Joanna MacDonald, she talked me through the style bar menu, highlighting which looks would suit me and how we could achieve more complex looks too. Using styling products and her unique tools, 20 minutes later my Ashley Olsen inspired hairup equipped with a small braid and Gigi waves was complete and I loved it. There’s an army of Eggs Benedict aficionados whose eyes light up at the sight of those two words on a breakfast menu. Martel Maxwell highlights her pick of the bunch.

THE WEST HOUSE, WESTPORT A promising start with an early 8am opening granting instant wifi and great coffee. The moment arrived and two toasted muffins each hold a runny (hurrah) egg and generous servings of spinach (I opted for Florentine). There was enough but not too much sauce, slightly warmed. Astonishingly all for under £6.

BRUACH, BROUGHTY FERRY A well-trodden stop off for cocktails but little known gem when it comes to breakfast, opening at 10am. On both occasions I’ve been the only customer - perfect for getting your head down to work or watching the world go by at the comfy window sofa seats. Runny eggs with smoky, thick ham, and piping hot, quality Americano. Around £10.

TAYPARK HOUSE, PERTH ROAD Having tried all three combinations (Benedict, Florentine and Royale) here many times, not once have the eggs been anything other than perfectly runny, yolk oozing into a delicious mix with Hollandaise and waves of salty smoked salmon. Coffee is delicious and wifi reliable with an al fresco option should the sun shine. Around £10.

Those boots were made for walking… and that’s just what I did, experiencing the established coastal walk from Broughty Ferry to Monifieth for the first time in years. Starting at Broughty Castle (pictured right), I headed along the Esplanade taking in stunning views of the Tay, the low tide exposing so much sand it looked as though I could walk to Fife. Years ago, there wasn’t the luxury of a refreshment stop because The Glass Pavilion cafe and restaurant with its beautiful vistas didn’t exist but now adds a civilised element especially on a windy day. Onwards to the rock gardens, taking in plaques on benches in memory of locals who loved to sit in quiet contemplation, as well as mini waterfalls, rock pools, an impressive

array of flowers, plants, trees and pretty displays. On to Monifieth along the beach, parallel to racing trains, a playground then caravan site. And all the way back again - though tired legs can cheat with a bus back with a five minute walk to the main road. Returning to the Ferry, you could reward yourself with all manner of treats - from fine dining at Tayberry to pub grub at Fishermans Tavern but with all those calories burned, Murray’s Fish and Chips all but winked to me to enjoy a poke of chips on the seashore.

IN A SPIN AT ASSAI Records are back in vogue and the comeback has inspired a gorgeous retro shop in Broughty Ferry to open its doors. Assai is the first such store in the Ferry since the 1970s and the brainchild of Keith Ingram who spent the previous 11 years selling vinyl online. As The Mackintosh Festival gets underway celebrating the work and life of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, we take a closer look at this iconic Glasgow son and unearth five facts that may surprise you. 1. The original spelling of his name was McIntosh and was changed, for reasons unknown, to Mackintosh around 1893. 2. Before marrying Margaret Macdonald, he had previously been engaged to Jessie Keppie, the sister of his employer, John Keppie, at Honeyman & Keppie. 3. Mackintosh used to go to the Room de Luxe at The Willow Tea Rooms before it opened to arrange the flowers and ensure his creation was presented as he envisioned it. 4. In 1915, while living in England, Mackintosh was accused of being a German spy and arrested. 5. Despite his impact, Mackintosh’s career as an architect was short, with his major commissions built between 1895-1905. he converted cinema became an important stop on any world tour. The adverts said “They’ve all played and they’ve all come back” and it was true – from ABBA to Frank Zappa, Johnny Cash to the Style Council, no British tour was complete without a visit to the Apollo. The big attraction was the ‘Glasgow choir’, the fans who treated every show like a religious experience. If they liked you, they loved you, and ordered you to remain on stage. If they hated you they turned their backs and ordered you off. The special relationship was highly-valued – Rick Wakeman explained that Yes would play a longer show in Glasgow, because the honest reaction helped them refine their performance. That honesty is why Black Sabbath’s Ozzy Osbourne launched his solo career at the Apollo. He declared that if he couldn’t please the Glasgow choir, he didn’t deserve a future

in music. The moment he kissed the stage is fondly remembered. Some venues have a vibe about them – a feeling, and often a smell, that confirms you’re in a temple of music. The Apollo had that and more, including purple glitter from the walls that stuck to you for months. Performers remembered the dangerously high stage that sloped towards the audience. Leo Sayer isn’t the only one to recall running on to start his show and nearly tumbling into the crowd 16 feet below. The bouncing balcony summed up the Apollo experience for many musicians – from the stage you could see 1,000s of fans jumping in time to the music, and the balcony moving in terrifying time with them. Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott once went up to experience it for himself, and was so scared he came straight downstairs again.

The lane outside the venue was a great place to meet the stars – from Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant through Thin Lizzy’s Phil Lynott to Motorhead’s Lemmy. Some big names loved the place so much that they’d stand about for hours to share the experience with fans who agreed with them. Dressed in evening suits with faces like stone, the bouncers were everyone’s evil arch-enemy. Stories abound of needless violence delivered with far too much pleasure. But head bouncer Danny Hendry always maintained that the stories were exaggerated. It’s true that there were dramatic incidents, including the drawn-out battle between The Stranglers and the security staff that contributed to punk music being banned in Glasgow for a time. But Danny argued: “In a room full of 4000 Glaswegians you’re always going to get a couple of bams” – and that’s what he was there to control.

The Apollo is long gone, but the legacy refuses to die. My book Apollo Memories, which includes 100s of anecdotes from bands and fans, just keeps selling. It was joined last year by a novella, Apollo Ambition, which tells the story of a fictional, magical night at the venue. There have been TV and radio specials, magazine articles and more – but the important task of passing the memories on to the younger generations has been taken on by Tommy McGrory’s award-winning musical I Was There, starring some of the best young artists in the country, and returning to Glasgow’s Clyde Auditorium on 07 October. ithin 48 hours of showing his final MA collection at Central Saint Martins in London, Jonathan Saunders was commissioned to design prints for Alexander McQueen. It was an impressive start to a career that has seen Saunders bestowed with numerous accolades and attract global fans such as Michelle Obama. And it’s not only Saunders who has shaped and continues to shape the Scottish fashion industry. Typified by her bold, geometric prints, Holly Fulton’s fashion credentials include winning the British Fashion Council’s NEWGEN award in 2010, not to mention collaborating with luxury handbag retailer Radley. Likewise, Christopher Kane burst onto the fashion scene in 2006 to a rapturous reception; he has expertly navigated the transition between high fashion and high street, creating soughtafter collections for Topshop.

“Holly Fulton, Christopher Kane and Jonathan Saunders have elevated the Scottish fashion industry on a global scale,” says Gordon Millar, founder of Scot Street Style. “All three were nominated in the Designer of the Year category at the Scottish Fashion Awards, which captured the imagination of the worldwide media outlets, keeping Scotland current and relevant.” Fashion never stands still however, and there is now a gamut of new vibrant labels and designers looking to make their mark on the industry. After spending 20 years in London, I moved home to Scotland a year ago and settled in Edinburgh. But even after all that time I still hadn’t managed to venture to the West, so booked a long overdue weekend away with partner, David. We wanted to combine a city break with some country air and a night in Glasgow followed by a second in Loch Lomond seemed like the best of both worlds. We set off early by train on the Saturday morning and the journey was quick and easy, taking us right into Glasgow city centre. After dropping off our bags at the contemporary Citizen M Hotel (the urban retreat felt like the perfect accommodation), we hit the shops and much to David’s dismay, my purchasing came quick and fast. A refuel in the form of bubbles & brunch at Hutchesons, and it was on to some culture, of which there is plenty in Glasgow. First on the agenda was the Mackintosh tour at the Glasgow School of Art. Unfortunately, the Mackintosh building still isn’t open after the fire two years ago but our tour guide and sculpture student, Catrina, did a great job talking us through the history of the building. We then headed over to the West End, mooched around in the Kelvingrove Museum and in and out of the lovely boutiques on Byres Road. After a quick freshen up back at the hotel, dinner was at The Gannet in the trendy Finnieston area; it more than lived up to the hype and the meal was utterly delicious.

In the morning we were back on the train and took the short trip to Cameron House in Loch Lomond – an absolutely picturesque and luxurious hotel directly on the Bonnie Banks. We were amazed at how quickly you could go from the bustling city centre to idyllic country retreat and it was exactly what we needed after an action packed day in Glasgow. To make the most of the surroundings we took the hour long Champagne cruise on the Loch which was the perfect way to blow away the cobwebs. We then kicked back and relaxed in the Carrick thermal spa which was just divine. Feeling lighter, brighter and completely refreshed, we rounded off the day with drinks in the hotel bar followed by a fantastic dinner in the Cameron Grill. Waking up in the morning to the loch view was the perfect end to the weekend. I can’t wait to go back.

I’ve always been a forward planner. That’s why it was so uncharacteristic of me to agree to a last minute girlie weekend trip to New York. Caught up in the moment, and in the mindset of you only live once, I decided to do it in style and booked return flights from Edinburgh to New York JFK with Delta Air Lines in the Delta One cabin. With fully flat-bed seats, five-course meal with wines, outstanding service and on-demand entertainment from Delta Studio, it was the perfect way to start our mini adventure; the flowing fizz only enhancing the sense of occasion. With just 48 hours on our side we stayed central and checked in to the Lotte New York Palace on Madison Avenue and then, armed with recommendations from New Yorkers, we walked The High Line. Peppered with sculptures and artists selling their wares, it’s Manhattan’s urban park created above the city on an elevated section of the former New York Central Railroad and inspired by la Coulée Verte in Paris. A short walk from here took us to the Whitney Museum of American Art on Gansevoort Street where we booked a tour (well worth it) to discover

famous works from the likes of Andy Warhol. We refueled at Urban Space Vanderbilt near Grand Central, a funky indoor food hall crammed with deliciousness, all before cocktails at the top of One World Observatory… and boy, what a view. With only hours until our flight home we managed A Slice of Brooklyn Tour (go with an appetite as pizza is included). You’ll also learn about Brooklyn-born celebrities, see movie locations from Hollywood blockbusters and discover Coney Island. A whirlwind of a trip of which only dreams are made. One word of advice though: once you turn left on the plane you'll never want to go right again.

ffice life is a comfortable way to make a living, but being a desk jockey can be detrimental to your health – as I recently discovered at Move Freely Sports Therapy, Edinburgh, the first clinic in Scotland to offer Kinetisense. In layman’s terms Kinetisense is cutting edge 3D motion tracking software that accurately measures 44 movements from eight joints, neck and back (KAMS test). The treatment begins with you performing seven physical tests in front of a camera and then your movements and posture being analysed on screen by Move Freely sports therapist Daniel. For me, the tests revealed stiffness in my mid back, tight, stiff and weak hips, poor balance and poor core stability. The posture assessment revealed my shoulders and hips were 6cm and 7cm in front of the plumb line respectively (if my posture was perfectly aligned with the plumb line my hips and shoulders would have been zero cm). My right shoulder was also below the left shoulder, right hip below my left hip, and I had a tilt in my spine. The results were worse than I had anticipated.

Daniel confidently pinpointed my desk job as the main contributing factor regarding my posture and movement problems and devised a plan to rectify the issues at home, from stretching to foam rolling and exercises to improve balance and strengthen weakened areas. After only two weeks there was an improvement in my range of motion, my core was getting stronger and there was a visible difference in my physique which inspired me to keep going. Two months down the line I continued to improve in every area, Daniel added in more strength exercises including deadlifts, overhead squats and rows. Autumn has arrived and quite frankly I’m not happy about it. If I could, I’d hibernate until the sun reappears next spring but one restaurant is determined to show summer lovers like me what we’d be missing. Printing Press Bar & Kitchen creates seasonal dishes using fresh Scottish produce, and its latest menu has a distinctly autumnal feel. From choux buns filled with cheese sauce, £3.50, to duck egg served with bacon and broad beans, £6, I’ll admit my head was turned at the very first course. On to the main and the chef continued to make an even more convincing case. Truffled honey chicken with onion spelt, £17, and a dry aged Tweed Valley beef burger, £14, these were richly flavoured, hearty dishes that made summer salads pale in comparison. The rhubarb and star anise crumble, £6, was a ramekin of autumnal colours, aromas, flavours and warmth – a full sensory celebration of the season, and one that converted me wholeheartedly. hen it comes to eating out in Edinburgh, a lot has to be said about word of mouth. So when I’d heard rumblings about a new dining destination in Morningside, I had to visit. Maison Bleue Le Bistrot is the little sister of Maison Bleue on Victoria Street offering a bistro vibe, unpretentious interiors and an eclectic mix of French, North African and Scottish flavours on the menu. Settling down with a glass of Cuvee des Vignerons white wine, £4.50 or £16.95 a bottle, we decided on the much talked about Les Bouchees (mouthfuls in French), dishes that are designed to be shared. We opted for the delicious haggis balls, £6.90, seared king scallops, £8.90, and peppered fondant camembert, £7.50. The scallops were served simply with crispy boudin noir and sauce vierge. The camembert fondant was decadent and the crispy French bread perfect for mopping up the oozy cheese.

You could literally work your way down the Les Bouchees menu but we wanted to do our mains justice. The signature dish, the Le Tagine, £19.90, was a triumph – the slow cooked lamb, super tender and succulent, literally melted in the mouth and the blend of African and Mediterranean spices worked perfectly. The aromatic South Vietnamese coconut chicken, £15.90, was delicate but equally delicious with sweet basil, lemongrass and lime leaves giving a sweet, fresh taste. For dessert we shared a crème caramel and pencilled in our return visit. Maison Bleue Le Bistrot more than delivered and deserves the hype. INGREDIENTS Pumpkin A drizzle of rapeseed oil 200g pumpkin, diced 10g ginger, finely diced Sprinkle of cinnamon 1 bunch spring onions, thinly sliced 15g pumpkin seeds Sea salt

Thyme cream 120ml double cream Generous pinch of salt 1 heaped tsp thyme leaves

METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 180C and Heat the oil in an ovenproof pan. 2. Add the pumpkin and fry gently until lightly browned. 3. Season with some sea salt. Add the ginger, cinnamon, spring onion and pumpkin seeds. 4. Place the pan in the oven and roast for 4-5 minutes until the pumpkin is just tender but still holding its shape then remove the pan from the oven. 5. To make the Thyme cream whisk all ingredients together till they form soft peaks. 6. To assemble, top eight Nairn’s Oatcakes with the pumpkin and thyme cream. hile we concede those Bavarians really know their stuff when it comes to beer, the Scottish brewing scene isn’t too shabby either. And unlike the official Oktoberfest beers, our local liquid golds aren’t restricted by the Bavarian Purity Requirements (only water, hops and barley can be used) meaning there are some seriously interesting flavour combinations out there. The following all pass the i-on suppability test. TEMPEST BREWING CO. RED EYE FLIGHT 7.4% Why choose between a coffee or a beer when you can have both in this Porter from Tempest Brewing Co. Designed and built in the Scottish Borders, Red Eye Flight sees Fazenda Pantano Brazilian coffee beans (from North Berwick coffee roasters Steampunk) gain intimate knowledge of Columbus hops to produce a dark as night, intense, rich chocolate Porter. CROMARTY BREWING CO. RED ROCKER 5% Cromarty’s tagline is ‘beer worth believing in’ and one sip of Red Rocker will have you singing hallelujah. A Red Rye based beer, liberally laced with American Hops during the boil and dry hopped after fermentation with more USA and New Zealand varieties, this is a real fruity character with a smooth bitterness, brewed to rock your senses to the edge. Since launching in 2011, this family-run brewery has been quietly building its roster of quality and characterful brews.

PILOT BEER ICED TEA ALE 5% Capturing the super refreshing nature of a big glass of iced tea, this great summer beer from Leith, Edinburgh, brewery Pilot is so wrong it’s right. Featuring Earl Grey and Scottish Breakfast tea with fresh lemongrass alongside Amarillo and Citra hops to give big fresh, citrus-y flavours alongside smoky and spicy notes, it may have traditionalists raising an eyebrow. ALECHEMY BREWING CITRA BURST 5.4% This father and son run Livingston brewery has the luxury of being able to create experimental beers on a whim, producing small quantities of seasonal, occasional and speciality beers that intrigue and delight beer drinkers who are looking for something a little bit different. In the past Alechemy has produced dark imperial stouts, high ABV pale ales, fruity saison beers, red Belgian ales and whiskey cask conditioned ales. But we’re loving Citra Burst, with its citrus loaded flavours giving a refreshing edge to the biscuity malt base. FYNE ALES MILLS & HILLS 9.5% Fyne Ales is a brewery not content to rest on its laurels and produces some fantastic seasonal brews and specials including Mills & Hills, a jet black imperial stout with a dark caramel coloured head, created in collaboration with De Molen brewery in The Netherlands. The aroma is of prunes and dark fruitcake with a smooth treacle like taste and a lasting warm bitter finish. It’s also Fyne Ales strongest beer to date – that 9.5% ABV wasn’t a typo. DRYGATE OUTASPACE APPLE ALE 4.7% With distinctive contemporary art based labelling, Drygate beers are hard to miss on the shelf but who would want to? With a quirky studio and a solid core line of brews, no one can criticise this Glasgow brewery for a lack of ambition. Case in point is Outaspace Apple Ale, an apple based fruit beer that shouldn't work but does. It’s a little on the sweet side but we still wouldn’t say no.
