06 | introduction
A letter from the directors Once upon a time on a sunny beach in Marbella, two 30 (ish)-year-old magazine professionals dreamt of coming home and launching a stylish, urban magazine in Edinburgh. Looking beyond the castle and tartan version of the city, they wanted to celebrate the fantastic lifestyle the city had to offer through the eyes of the people living it. i-on Edinburgh magazine was born in September 2005 and launched at the then Santini Restaurant at The Sheraton Hotel to a select few of our new business associates and colleagues. The response was overwhelmingly positive. 10 years later and we have weathered a few storms, grown some new grey hairs, added a further two titles to our coven, launched a thriving digital platform and become the highest circulated and read magazine in Edinburgh and Scotland. It’s been an amazing experience. We’ve interviewed some of the best people in Scotland, eaten in some of the finest restaurants, profiled upcoming bands and djs and used some

of the best fashion photographers in the business. We have uncovered a host of hidden gems in each city and given away incredible, unique competition prizes to our readers. The i-on reader has been unfailingly loyal, incredibly generous and encouraging at every turn. We wouldn't be here without you and we look forward to sharing the next 10 years of i-on with you. Lots of love

SCOTLAND THE BRAVER words ∙ Dean Newton
A
country’s narrative and perception is invariably linked to its culture, history, people and landmarks and perhaps no more so than Scotland. But if the last decade has proven anything, it’s that ‘Scottish’ness’ can mean a whole lot more than tartan, haggis, shortbread and the other touristic icons of the traditional national stereotype. Since the world’s spotlight shone on the G8 summit in
2005, the country has quietly been fostering a confident new climate of change, creativity and rebirth. Perceptions, both internally and externally, have begun to shift from the tired ‘Jimmy Hat’ caricature to that of a truly contemporary, forward-thinking nation. Devolution’s greatest achievement was to begin to proliferate a new national optimism that elected officials wield the authority and legitimacy to affect change and that voting offers a genuine voice rather

Positive rule and the freedom to invest in arts, culture, landmarks and education has slowly borne fruits, buoying the collective psyche and offering up a transformed vision of what Scotland is and does. One of the devolved government’s key actions was to centralise and revamp the initiative designed to support

Creative Scotland, which is partially lottery funded, doles out £100m annually to cultural and arts projects around the country. One example of its many funding success stories is the Fashion Foundry; an “incubator and talent hub” which helped to support the careers of several aspiring fashion designers including that of the ASOS favourite, Rebecca Torres, whose work can now be found on celebs across the globe. The last 10 years have served up a raft of new fashion luminaries with designers such as Christopher Kane, Jonathan Saunders, Holly Fulton and Judy R Clark gracing the pages of Vogue, here and abroad. They form part of a fashion and textiles industry which employs 10,400 people, turns over £950m and offers growing export sales of £350m.
THE SPECTACULAR COLOUR WASHED 13,000 CAPACITY BUILDING RECENTLY BECAME THE WORLD’S SECOND-BUSIEST LIVE ENTERTAINMENT ARENA ACCORDING TO INDUSTRY RANKINGS
Scotland's top export markets are the US, Netherlands, France and Germany, while fast growing markets include China, Australia, Japan, India, United Arab Emirates and Russia. It’s been a productive decade for architecture too and it’s tough to imagine a more fitting testament to the nation’s ambitions than Norman Foster’s

The spectacular colour washed 13,000 capacity building, modelled on Greek and Roman amphitheatres, recently became the world’s second-busiest live entertainment arena according to industry rankings. It joins a host of iconic new award-winning architectural landmarks and congruous, beneficial spaces such as the Glasgow Riverside Museum (European Museum of the Year), the John Hope Gateway at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, the National Museum of Scotland expansion, Perth Concert Hall, Sir Duncan Rice Library at Aberdeen University, The Kelpies, the forthcoming V&A in Dundee and Aberdeen’s 70,000 sq feet, £250 million Union Square shopping centre that opened in October 2009. FanDuel is a fantasy sports site which operates mostly in the US that was founded in Edinburgh in 2009 and paid out over £360m in prize money last year. Their office neighbour Skyscanner, the brainchild of Gareth Williams, is the number one flight search engine in Europe, used by millions of people every month with offices in Glasgow, Barcelona, Beijing, Budapest, Shenzhen, Singapore and Miami. According to techbritain.com, Edinburgh’s the third largest tech cluster in the UK, second only to London and Manchester. Largely thanks to Edinburgh University’s world class School of Informatics and startup incubators like Codebase (The largest in the UK) and Techcube which supply office space, networking opportunities and mentoring support. But also large scale success stories such as Skyscanner have had a magnetic effect on the scene, attracting the next generation of new businesses whilst also enthusing investors. Other tech big guns in the city are Amazon who operate one of their major international Development Centres. Video games giant, Rockstar North (who’s last title, Grand Theft Auto V, made £510 million in the first day of release). Lastly, Mashable, which was launched in Banchory by Pete Cashmore. At just 19 years old, the youngster eschewed university to launch one of the world’s most popular news and information blogs from his bedroom. Today the site receives 42 million hits a month. Innovation isn’t limited to the tech industries though; Scotland is at the forefront of green energy invention and committed to the widespread use of green energy sources. MOST PROBABLY THANKS TO HAVING MORE WORLD CLASS UNIVERSITIES PER HEAD OF POPULATION THAN ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD
EU population, it harbours 25 per cent of Europe's wind and tidal resources and already generates nearly 50 per cent of our gross electricity consumption from renewables. In the world of scientific exploration, Scotland's research is cited and referenced around the world more often than any other country in comparison to its GDP. Most probably thanks to having more world class universities per head of population than anywhere else in the world. As easy as it would be to solely attribute this stimulus to political shifts and governmental reform, the truth is that the momentum of the last decade was triggered by a generation brave enough to evolve, embrace change and excite momentum. 10 years after the G8, when the global cameras returned to view the independence referendum, Ryder Cup and Commonwealth Games; they found a country with a vibrancy, confidence and swagger you’d have been hard pushed to find a decade ago. For now, the glass of the dour-faced Scotsman of old seems half full.

MY I-ON
SCOTLAND It’s been tough to pin them down but for this special edition of i-on People, we’ve enlisted the help of some exemplary characters to glean an insight into the daily life and character of a successful Scot. Here, our interviewees, from the worlds of fashion, film, sports and broadcasting tell us about their favourite corners of the country.

Sam Heughan
S
am Heughan is the 35-year-old star of the hit US TV series, Outlander, based on the novel by NY Times bestselling author Diana Gabaldon. Born in Balmaclellan and based in Glasgow, Sam trained at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award for Most Promising Performer. Where did you start life? I’m lucky to have been brought up in rural Scotland on the Kenmure estate, the old castle and forest were my play areas. What makes Scotland? Scotland has great produce, great coastlines and scenery. It’s God’s own country! The music scene in Glasgow is fantastic, I follow Frightened Rabbit and We Were Promised Jetpacks and love to see them live in one of the many great music venues.
SAM HEUGHAN
What’s your favourite tradition? “A wee deoch an doris” is the Gaelic tradition of a dram for the road, a quick one before leaving. Working on this show has led me to understand a few words of Gaelic and the traditions and storytelling behind them. Where exemplifies Scotland? The Islands are amazing, visitors should see Skye, Mull or Lewis. They’re magical places with an ever changing personality.
FAVOURITE SCOTTISH PLACES TO… Dine: The Three Chimneys on Skye, the journey there is special, passing the Old Man of Storr. Enjoy a coffee: Tinderbox in Glasgow, great strong coffee. Lunch with friends: The Finnieston area of Glasgow, there are loads of good bars and restaurants. Live it up: Porter and Rye for cocktails, Table 11 for seafood then The Ben Nevis for a whisky. Go for a walk: I regularly walk the Munros around Loch Lomond. Skye

KAYE ADAMS
I
f you don’t know Kaye Adams from presenting her show on BBC Radio Scotland then you’ll certainly have spotted her as a panellist on ITV’s Loose Women. Born in Grangemouth but “happy as a clam living in Glasgow”, Kaye juggles a busy freelance career with family life, keeping fit and long walks with her dog. Following a charity climb of Ben Nevis and being bowled over by the beauty of the landscape, she plans to swap chilled out café weekends with spending more free time exploring Scotland. Kaye is also an ambassador to the Children 1st and Breast Cancer Care charities. What does a typical day involve? A 6am rise to catch up on all of the news before arriving at the BBC at 7am. I’ll emerge slightly shell shocked at 12 and try to fit in a fitness class but it’s usually a mix of catching up with other work, child juggling and preparing for the next day. What gives Scotland its edge? There’s a social cohesion to it which I think has a huge impact on its character; there’s no room for airs and graces. We like to prick pomposity… usually with a sledgehammer.
FAVOURITE SCOTTISH PLACES TO… Dine: Cafézique, Glasgow. Enjoy a coffee: The Kitchen Window or Sonny & Vito’s, Glasgow. Lunch with friends: The (Ubiquitous) Chip. Go for a walk: Kelvingrove Park with the dog. The shop you’ll always find me in: Daniel Footwear; they’re always good for a natter and have a treat for the dog.
Ben Nevis
Favourite Scottish person? Billy Connolly, I love that he’s so Scottish and yet so outward looking. He’s a wonderful combination of Scottish traits yet not defined by them. Which area best reflects your personality? It has to be Grangemouth; a bit tired and grimy in broad daylight but with a pleasant twinkle at night. Where would you show someone the real Scotland? The Barras in Glasgow.

dinburgh born and based, Kestin creates contemporary menswear which sells all over the world. The former head of design for Nigel Cabourn and Common People has also just been nominated for Scottish Fashion Designer of the Year. Kestin, whose design studio is in The Biscuit Factory in Leith, eschewed London life for a return to Edinburgh with his family. Why Edinburgh over London? I love Edinburgh as a city, it’s like London without the bad bits. I wanted to be able to afford a nice house and have a great studio space, things I couldn’t afford in London. There are some great things happening in Scotland and I feel we’re creating a great creative community, all helping each other to progress. If you could choose anywhere to live in Scotland? Edinburgh always. But we do spend a bit of time in East Lothian. I love the beaches around North Berwick where I grew up. What’s a usual day for you? I normally ride my bike to the studio for a catch up with my design team, head along the cycle path to see how things are at the St Stephen Street store then up to George Street. A few meetings, catch up on calls and then end the day with a beer at The Last Word.

Your earliest memory of Scottish life? Holidays in Skye as a kid. Itchy woolly jumpers and kilts made me want to design something else. Describe the perfect weekend? On a sunny day I’d head down to Seacliff beach with my family then take a long lunch at The Lobster Shack in North Berwick.
FAVOURITE SCOTTISH PLACES TO… Dine: Timberyard, The Kitchin or Aizle, Edinburgh. Live it up: Monachyle Mohr, The Three Chimneys or Gleneagles. Go for a walk: Seacliff Beach, East Lothian. Have a pamper: Archerfield Spa, East Lothian. Do some shopping: Sam Burns’ salvage yard near Prestonpans, it’s a great place for inspiration. North Berwick © Thomson Photography

EUAN BURTON
E
uan Burton MBE is a household name in Scottish judo. Widely respected on and off the mat, he was Scotland’s flag bearer for the Commonwealth Games and embraced the pressure of the nation’s hopes and expectations by winning the Gold medal two weight categories above his normal category - and at the age of 35. Having retired from competition after the Glasgow games, Euan is now helping other judokas excel through his role as Scotland’s national judo coach.
What’s your first memory of family life? My nana used to drive me down the coast to Eyemouth when I was a kid. We would always potter around the beach, get a pub lunch and then an ice cream before heading back home. What’s Scotland’s USP? I think the mixture of history and vibrancy in the cities and the tranquil beauty of much of the rest of the country are a wonderful mix. West Highland Line
FAVOURITE SCOTTISH PLACES TO…
Dine: The Kitchin, Edinburgh. Enjoy a coffee: Wellington, Edinburgh. Lunch with friends: The Roseleaf, Edinburgh. Go for a walk: Around Arthur’s Seat. Have a pamper: One Spa at the Sheraton.
Is there anything that would place Scotland more firmly on the map? As an athlete, and someone who had the greatest time at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, perhaps if we held an Olympic Games that would put us on the world sporting map. Scotland’s best kept secret? It’s not much of a secret but even in the winter the beach at Kiloran Bay on Colonsay is a bit special and definitely off the beaten track. How would you show a visitor the real Scotland? You see a lot of what the country has to offer by travelling the West Highland Line.

ara Nowy is far more than a pretty face. Signed to Model Team in Glasgow, Tara also works as part time roadie (her dad is Scottish music royalty, Fish) and is a director at the Scottish Fashion Creative Network, a member led network established to support and promote those working within the fashion sector. Half Scottish and half German, she was born in Leith but spent five years in Berlin before returning to Scotland. Where do you live? I’m on the road a lot but when I am in the country spend most of my time in Edinburgh. It still beats most of the places I have been.
FAVOURITE SCOTTISH PLACES TO…
Dine: Cafe St Honore, Edinburgh. Enjoy a coffee: Wellington Coffee on George Street. Lunch with friends: Yes Sushi or Sushiya, Edinburgh. Living it up: Joseph Pearce’s on Elm Row or the clubs in Glasgow for a boogie. Do some shopping: I enjoy a rummage in Armstrongs to see what treasures I can find.
What gives Scotland its edge? The people, nothing beats Scottish banter. Describe the perfect weekend break? I recently went to Loch Lomond with a friend and just drove around completely in awe of the scenery before getting dinner and staying at a small hotel by the loch with a fire and the most beautiful views. Scotland’s best kept secret? Our fashion designers. There is so much talent here that goes unnoticed it would be great to see them be put on the map. If you could change one thing about Scotland… more opportunity for creatives.

MARC WARREN

A
ccording to the PGA rankings, Marc Warren is Scotland’s number one golfer. The 34-year-old turned professional in 2002 and amidst a career of tour victories he cites winning the 2007 World Cup alongside Colin Montgomerie as his biggest achievement to date. When the Rutherglen born golfer isn’t on tour, he enjoys the quiet life with his wife and little boy in Newton Mearns. What’s an average day for you? It depends whether I’m on tour or at home. A day off usually involves some family time then some golf practice. We always try to catch up with friends when I’m home too. A day on tour varies depending where in the world we are. Where have your most recent tours taken you? My last three tour events in a row have been in Scotland. I played the Scottish Open at Gullane, then headed to St Andrews for The Open, followed by the Paul Lawrie Saltire Energy Match Play event in Aberdeen. We’re lucky to have such great courses to hold big tournaments and they’re so well supported by the fans.
What’s your favourite Scottish saying? ‘Haste ye back’, it really sums up the warmth of Scottish people. How would you spend a free weekend? Gleneagles hotel with the family. It’s an amazing place with first class service, plus I won the Johnnie Walker Championship there so I’ve got some great memories. What’s the best advice you were ever given? Judge yourself and others for the effort that’s put in rather than focussing solely on the outcome.
FAVOURITE SCOTTISH PLACES TO… Relax: St Andrews, a great place for a family weekend that’s not too far away, and of course it has an amazing golf course. Dine: Ho Wong, Glasgow. Lunch with friends: Eglinton Arms, Eaglesham. Live it up: Gleneagles hotel.

n anniversary is a great excuse to look back, sure, but the decade between 2005 and 2015 couldn’t have been better chosen to demonstrate just how resurgent the Scottish music scene is at the moment. Of course, for as long as rock ‘n’ roll has existed the country has sent footsoldiers to represent it in the charts, but something different is happening in the 2000s. Call it a renewed cultural confidence brought on by the attention and discussions around the independence referendum or the use of new technology making it easier for young artists to record music and get it out there, but the diversity and varied successes of new Scottish bands and artists is on a high at the moment. To celebrate 10 years of i-on, here are our (unscientifically chosen) 10 best bands of the last decade and why we like them so much. First up, let’s look at the critical successes, and no group stands out here like Edinburgh trio Young Fathers. Formed at the old Bongo Club when they were just teenagers, they’ve graduated from an eager young rap crew into just about the most futuristic band in the British Isles, a scintillating burst of rock, rap, electro, soul and lyrical concerns which touch upon race, poverty and politics without ever sounding like polemic. Famously, they won the Scottish Album of the Year (SAY) Award for their mini-album Tape Two in 2014 and then completed a memorable double with an unexpected Mercury Prize win for the debut album proper Dead later in the year, following it up within months with White Men Are Black Men Too. Speaking of the Mercury, Scotland’s other major representative of the last decade was the very different King Creosote, aka Fife troubadour, Fence Collective founder and sometime proprietor of the Homegame festivals in

Drummer Dave Maclean is the brother of former Beta Band member turned filmmaker (he directed the recent Slow West with Michael Fassbender) John Maclean, and the band have a similarly eccentric outlook, albeit with an added dash of Spaghetti Western-soundtracking style. Their self-titled debut earned them a 2012 Mercury nomination. Hudson Mohawke, meanwhile, is an electronic music producer from Glasgow whose influences include hip-hop and rave music. Named Ross Birchard and also now based in London, it’s hard to know what’s more enviable – that his actor father Paul appeared in both Tim Burton’s Batman and Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, or that he’s one of Kanye West’s go-to producers. HudMo’s own releases include the albums Butter in 2009 and this year’s Lantern, and he’s half of the internationally successful trap duo TNGHT. Playing club music of a different but massively more successful kind is Calvin Harris, without doubt Scotland’s most successful musical export of the last 10 years. Originally from Dumfries Hudson Mohawke

and a modest hit with his electroflavoured 2007 album I Created Disco, his breakthrough came with the release of his hugely successful third record 18 Months in 2012, which fully embraced the EDM sound and was a big hit in America. These days his fame can be measured in terms of the number of famous singers he’s linked with romantically as much as his hits, with Taylor Swift being his current squeeze. Other big successes over the years have included the Aberdeen-raised soul singer Emeli Sandé, whose recent radio silence counteracts her ubiquity in 2012, when she sang at the Olympic Games opening and closing ceremonies and saw her debut album

BEYOND THE CRITICAL HITS AND THE COMMERCIAL SUCCESSES LIE A WEALTH OF OTHER ARTISTS WHO ARE CREATING EXCITING AND INDIVIDUAL WORK IN SCOTLAND RIGHT NOW
Paolo Nutini
Our Version of Events yield a stream of hits including Heaven, Read All About It and Next to Me (the latter her only US hit single to date). A three-time Brit Award winner the first time out, her return is imminent. Paisley’s Paolo Nutini is the third big name produced around these parts, with the rough round the edges pin-up’s signing to Atlantic Records coming within weeks of his 18th birthday and his subsequent fame giving the impression it’s been grown into in the intervening years. While 2006’s These Streets showed a breezy young pop singer-songwriting
talent, 2009’s Sunny Side Up and especially last year’s Caustic Love have demonstrated a more versatile, classic rocking talent with a gruff croon which makes him sound far older than he is. Beyond the critical hits and the commercial successes lie a wealth of other artists who are creating exciting and individual work in Scotland right now. We won’t go into detail but we will say that if anyone wants to research the longlists for the SAY Awards in recent years, then you aren’t going to go far wrong with most of the choices on there.

In the meantime, we’ll put a couple of suggestions for bands you really ought to be listening to right now out there. One is Glasgow duo Tuff Love, who are signed to the Pictish Trail’s Eiggbased DIY micro-label Lost Map - they create sublime and expansive guitar rock which is heavily influenced by the shoegaze sound of the late ‘80s and are a favourite with BBC 6 Music listeners. The other is Glasgow’s indiepunk outfit White, who are so new as to be unheard of, but with a major label deal and one of the year’s best tracks in the Associates-meets-DFA discopunk groove of Future Pleasures, it’s not likely to stay that way. If you visit in February, head north to Colombia’s Caribbean Coast and join in the party and celebrations of the Carnaval de Barranquilla. One of the largest carnivals in the world (second only to the Rio Carnival) it’s an important folkloric event that dates back to the 19th century when the streets of Barranquilla come alive with colourful floats, energetic street performances, exotic music and elaborate costumes. Don’t miss the Batalla de las Flores, the carnival’s spectacular parade led by the carnival queen herself. Sun, sand, swaying palms, turquoise waters and friendly locals… where better to celebrate than in Barbados? This diverse island has it all, whether you like to celebrate by partying on the beach until dawn, or soaking up the sun by day and low-key dining by night. The west coast is calmer and the south slightly livelier. From romantic horse riding along pristine velvet sands to the Friday Night Fish Fry with local rum and
music in the fishing village of Oistins, there are memories to be made here. Book a five hour luxury catamaran cruise, with stops for snorkelling over reefs and shipwrecks or enjoy a day at the races at the Barbados Turf Club. As the birthplace of rum, there’s no shortage of cocktails either, so it’s the perfect place to raise a celebratory glass or three.

Ta Prohm Temple
ANGKOR WAT, CAMBODIA Liz Simpson, editor of boutique accommodation website i-escape.com I spent my 25th birthday at Angkor Wat in Cambodia, and it was a completely magical celebration. We were picked up by motorbikes at 4am and driven to the side of a river to watch the sun rise over this spectacular 12th century Khmer kingdom. Gradually, ancient temples began to reveal themselves, until the whole mystical scene was bathed in a rosy glow; it was utterly stunning. We spent the day visiting magnificent temple ruins, from Ta Prohm,
gripped by banyan roots, to Bayon, where 216 giant faces have been chiselled into the stone. Unforgettable. Heritage Suites Hotel is the place to stay in town; super romantic with a fabulous pool, impressive spa and sublime rooms. The hotel has its own tour company offering other celebratory experiences, too – perhaps a Champagne cruise on Tonle Sap (Asia’s freshwater lake) or mountain biking into the jungle to picnic amongst secret temples.

onsider yourself extremely lucky if you happen to live in Scotland right now because you’re probably eating some of the best food you’ve ever eaten. There’s more choice, more availability, more investment – 2015 is officially the ‘Year of Food and Drink’ – and above all there is more passion from the producers, the suppliers, and the chefs than ever before. Not to mention us, you, the eaters. Rewind to 2005. We were talking about Morgan Spurlock’s McDonald’s documentary Super Size Me, Starbucks’ quest for world domination, the South Beach Diet and Jamie Oliver, voted the Most Inspiring Political Figure for his efforts with school dinners whilst peppering conversations with words like ‘organic’ and ‘provenance’ even though we weren’t quite sure what they meant. We probably didn’t own a coffee machine, if we did it certainly wouldn’t have used pods. We loved watching New Yorkers eat cupcakes in Sex and the City but there wasn’t an equivalent Magnolia Bakery in Edinburgh, Glasgow or anywhere else in Scotland for that matter. The independent coffee scene in Scotland was far from thriving with just one or two players like Beanscene taking on the big guns. Starbucks and the rest were the places to hang out. We still loved the ‘coffee nation’ movement and we couldn’t get enough of their skinny lattes, bucket sized Americanos and free wifi. We knew about farmers’ markets, we might even have taken a stroll around one but it was less to shop and more for a meander during the weekend. Craft beer was very much a pursuit of garage enthusiasts whilst vegetable delivery boxes were the chief domain of the ‘green brigade’. Fast forward to 2015. In Scotland we are lucky enough to have some of the finest produce in the UK readily available within spitting distance (mostly) of our own front doors. Hand dived scallops, small batch beer, more than enough gin to keep you and your granny quiet, top quality beef, cheese, amazing fish, the tastiest strawberries and raspberries, and the whisky. What’s even more exciting is the fact that food is no longer being produced exclusively by the big boys. We

are fortunate enough to have small scale creators - the makers - who are doing something a little bit different and who want to share it with us. Visit your local farmers market, your independent traders, farm shops, a street food event or a food festival and you’ll find them all there, selling their wares to local regulars who actually come to buy their cheese and artisan bread for the week rather than just
having a nosey around. The Edinburgh Farmers’ Market has recently celebrated its 15 year anniversary and is thriving to say the least. A few years ago The Telegraph named it as one of the world’s best farmers’ markets. Not many cities can claim that. Their 15 year celebrations, which included a pop up in St Andrew Square, drew in huge crowds despite it being held during the week.
Scotland’s first restaurant festival and pop up market takes place in Glasgow early September and has been created by ‘Real Food Real Folk’ who promise to serve up the cream of food and drink producers from across the West of Scotland. With names such as Ox & Finch, Ubiquitous Chip and Crabshakk lined up it’s a promise they look sure to keep. Championing some of the unsung heroes of the Glasgow
a foodie revolution | 69 restaurant scene they are ready to serve up to 5,000 people over the course of the weekend from their venue in an old tobacco warehouse near the Clyde Waterfront. Scotland is enjoying the hipster coffee scene as much as anywhere else in the UK and most of us are pretty happy about that. Walk past Brew Lab on South College Street, Edinburgh on any day of the week and you’ll be lucky to find an empty seat. They’re doing something right and we quite happily part with our hard earned cash on single origin filters, espresso and cold brew coffee. And, it’s fair to say that the dining scene in Scotland is on a serious ‘up’. The media (traditional and social) has played a huge part in our increased awareness of food and drink; tablets and smartphones mean we can post images of our favourite dishes on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or all three and then head to a forum to say whether we loved or loathed it. And on TV, who would’ve guessed that a silver haired baker would have the ladies a-swooning? Paul and Mary’s charming but honest baking reality show has been an unprecedented hit and the nation has dusted off its Kenwood mixers to join in. Weekend mornings are now all about the cookery shows with Saturday Kitchen, GBBO, What to Eat Now whilst the cult of celebrity continues where Keith Floyd started with Hairy Bikers, I Can Cook
SCOTLAND IS ENJOYING THE HIPSTER COFFEE SCENE AS MUCH AS ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE UK AND MOST OF US ARE PRETTY HAPPY ABOUT THAT

(or perhaps can’t), River Cottage, the lovely Nigella, Rick Stein, Tom Kerridge, Michel Roux, not to mention Masterchef whose reincarnations go on and on. And then, to top it off, we all trot along to see them live at the BBC Good Food Shows. We just can't get enough. We are involved, we have been sucked in and we love it. We are still eating out a lot but now we have a plethora of choice. Pizza Express has to fight really hard to get a look in these days. The trends we read about from London and beyond continue to venture north. Three or four years ago would you have expected to sit at communal

tables when you went out for dinner? These days it’s pretty normal. We have seen the arrival of supper clubs, nose to tail, street food vans like Crema Caravan who earned a welldeserved fifth place in the Scottish and the North of England heats of the British Street Food Awards 2015. Not to forget pop-up dining, Nordic inspired tasting menus, farm to fork, small plates, sharing, foraged food, raw, smoked: if you want it then finally Scotland pretty much has it. Edinburgh has got Michelin stars well and truly covered but so much more too. Success stories such as Timberyard have set the bar high but the city goes from strength to strength with choices galore. Head to Glasgow and you will enjoy a more urban dining scene akin to East London, perhaps New York too, with unsung heroes such as The Gannet based in Finnieston, the new food quarter in the city. And Aberdeen has long made good use of its position right on the coast, sourcing amazing fish and seafood as showcased at The Silver Darling and Moonfish Café. Further afield, on the Isle of Skye to be precise, The Three Chimneys is a must visit location for any foodie. It has won numerous accolades and deservedly so. Hot off the press, a very new addition to the banks of Loch Fyne is Inver, recently gaining a 9/10 from The Guardian. Chef Pam Brunton is delivering food (according to the review) in the ‘new-Nordic’ style that we’re all getting excited about. Dishes include Pigs’ blood bun and crab, Bute lamb with toasted caraway seed and fennel puree, and panna cotta scented with gorse. Fans of Magnus Nilsson’s Fäviken should be very excited. It’s perhaps not quite as difficult to get to but apparently it helps if you’ve got a boat…. In 2005, drinking out was a lot simpler. A gin and tonic was a Gordon’s and Schweppes although

Eames Lounge Chair Designed by Charles and Ray Eames for the Herman Miller furniture company in 1956, the Eames chair continues to stand out from the crowd. Made of moulded Rosewood plywood and leather, this luxury item was inspired by the traditional club chair. Charles’ vision was for a chair with “the warm, receptive look of a well-used first baseman’s mitt.” The curved timber panels provide a retro feel complemented by the modern buttoned leather detail creating a truly timeless design. The large chair size and matching footstool allows the Eames chair to replace any armchair in a lounge as it provides the same level of comfort and relaxation. There are various copies of this chair available but Herman Miller and Vitra (pictured) remain the only two companies to produce these chairs with the Eames name attached. If you want some classic comfort in your home you can get yours in Tangram and Haus London.
Alessi
Juicy Salif Citrus Squeezer The concept behind this nifty design came to Philippe Starck whilst eating squid on holiday. After realising he had no lemon to complete his meal he set to work sketching on a napkin which was later delivered to Alessi. The iconic Juicy Salif citrus squeezer followed not long after in 1990. The Juicy Salif now ranks among the greats of modern design with a place in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Starck even said himself the controversial squeezer was "not meant to squeeze lemons" but "to start conversations". And that it certainly does. Whether you use for lemons or display it as a sculpture, its striking, iconic design provides a work of art in any home. If you’d like to ‘start conversations’ in your home you can pick up your piece of modern art from TOJO (Glasgow) or www.alessi.com/en.

Anglepoise Lamp
John Lewis
You might not be familiar with the name of this desk lamp but you’ll definitely recognise it. Originally designed in 1932 by George Carwardine, a British mechanical engineer who specialised in vehicle suspension systems, it was developed as a result of a mechanism which he recognised had applications in other fields. The difference between Anglepoise lamps and other angled desk lamps is the patent placement of all springs (either three or four) near the base.
They’ve now become part of the furniture within almost any environment and, as well as being seen in the home, are in high demand by professionals such as architects and designers. Due to their simplicity they look great in home studies or as reading lamps in bedrooms. John Lewis supplies a great range, the colours available reflect the retro period of the design yet allows them to sit comfortably alongside the most modern home interiors.

Liberty Print Oscar Wilde once said, “Liberty is the chosen resort of the artistic shopper.” And I’d have to agree. Created in 1875 by Arthur Lasenby Liberty, Liberty is now a familiar household name renowned for its striking floral and graphic prints within both the fashion and interiors worlds. The designs are bold, vibrant and timeless, complementing both traditional and modern interiors. A stunning feature piece in your home, it can be showcased through furniture fabrics, curtains or print cushions, like this design from Amara.com. The fabrics are also very popular with craft making, Remnant Kings supplies a fantastic Liberty Art Fabrics Lucky Dip Bundle pack, £13.75, which includes five different Liberty prints swatches for you to put your creative juices to work.
Whistling Bird Kettle This is another fantastic creation for Alessi. Designed by Michael Graves in 1985, the whistling bird tea kettle is unlike a typical kettle that signals water is boiling. The wide base of the kettle makes the water boil faster and its clean lines and polished finish allow it to fit comfortably within any kitchen interior, creating a ‘hot’ topic of conversation when it sounds to boil. There are a few colour choices to the handle, a miniature version is also available as a decorative collector’s piece to bring a little bit of joy to your kitchen and both of these can be found at Westgate Galleries or Alessi.

Barcelona Chair You’ll have no doubt seen this design without realising it’s a classic. Designed by Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe and Lilly Reich in 1929 and honoured with the Museum of Modern Art Award in 1977, the Barcelona Chair has been in production for almost 90 years with very few changes distinguishing it from the first version. Its popular design
has been copied over the years, and it can be a common find within office spaces and reception areas, but, it also looks fantastic as a bedroom chair or to spruce up a room corner. Available in six different leather colours to suit your colour palette. Elliptical Interiors can help bring a bit of Barcelona into your home.

Ball Clock You could be forgiven for thinking the Ball Clock is a 21st century design, but, it was in fact designed in 1948 by George Nelson who had a vision to bring modern design into common aspects of the home. This re-edition clock is now manufactured and distributed by Vitra using original models and documents from the George Nelson archive. Available in a selection of finishes and colours it’s a great way to brighten up any wall. Kids will love the mixed vibrant coloured option whereas the sleek black and brass will dress a dining room perfectly, TOJO Design, Amazon and John Lewis stock a selection of the colours available.

Ercol Furniture
Ercol at Houseology.com
Ercol is one of the most recognised names in furniture. Founded in 1920 by Lucian Ercolani his goal was to make well designed furniture that was made in a good working environment by craftsmen who took pride in their jobs. These days original Ercol furniture pieces dating back to the ‘50s and ‘60s are highly sought after items mainly found in vintage yards, auctions or second hand furniture stores such as Shapes Furniture or Home at Six in Edinburgh or
Love Salvage in Glasgow. The tables and chairs are easily identified by their angled legs and smooth curved edge profile tops in slick timbers, still popular today as they could be mistaken for a new modern Swedish design piece due to their classic simplicity. Ercol are still designing and manufacturing furniture which can be purchased from Houseology (pictured), John Lewis, Martin & Frost, Stirling Furniture and Moleta Munro.

Series 7 Chair
Sofa at Furniture Village
Chesterfield Sofa There’s great debate about where the ‘Chesterfield’ name derived from in relation to the iconic furniture we all know. Most historians point the finger at the 4th Earl of Chesterfield, Phillip Stanhope, who had an eye for beautiful furniture. The first chesterfield, however, was created around 1764-1773. Since then the button back sofa has graced almost every interior space you can imagine, from palaces to stately homes, hotels, restaurants, bars and clubs. It’s available in a variety of sizes and in everything from plush velour to luxurious leather and is one of the few pieces of furniture that looks fabulous brand new or beaten and bruised after years of use. Jeffrey interiors has some great designer styles or you can look to places like The Sofa Workshop. Alternatively you can find some great pre-owned ones on Gumtree and in local vintage furniture dealers.
This solid stackable chair was designed by Arne Jacobsen, the creator of the famous Egg and Swan chairs, back in 1955 and it’s almost like it was his vision for the future. To celebrate its 60th anniversary, manufacturer Fritz Hansen asked Danish artist Tal R to select nine new colours which have revived the design and show the iconic chair in a fresh new light. Made of pressure moulded sliced veneer, front upholstery and full upholstery are now available in both fabrics and leather finishes. The moulded form creates a comfort which is why you’ll see the Series 7 chair in many cafes and restaurants. Team it with a glass dining table in your home and you’ll never have to buy another dining chair again. Now that’s an iconic investment. Pop into Moleta Munro to try one out.

The Academy of Make-up is Scotland’s epicentre for anyone wanting to embark on a professional make-up career and gain an accredited qualification. Earlier in the year, the academy hosted a pop-up course in Aberdeen for aspiring bridal make-up artists, with a second to follow in late September. During my own 11 day Pro Make-up course I gained an invaluable and practical understanding of the industry. Brushes, bridal consultations, smoky eyes, vintage make-up, editorial make-up, contouring, recognising eye/face shapes, applying strip/individual lashes, shaping eyebrows, the perfect Monroe style red lip were all mastered. Expert tutors (with impressive credentials) guide you every step of the way and a Pro after-care programme offers support to students when starting out in their make-up career. The course is an investment but I’d definitely recommend it to anyone with an interest in makeup artistry. Aberdeen Bridal Make-Up Course, (£1,100£1,900) 27 September – 22 November 22 (on nine consecutive Sundays), includes the Foundation Course and Intermediate Level Bridal Expert Course, which can be booked together or separately. TAKE THREE
Summer is but a distant memory but if you’re still pining for authentic tapas, tortellini or tzatziki, here’s our pick of southern European dining destinations guaranteed to deliver sunshine on a plate.
Caf Andaluz Despite being a relatively recent addition to Union Street, this Spanish themed eatery is already one of the city’s most popular restaurants. Beautifully decorated in a Moorish style, the tapas selection is superb and while all the tapas stalwarts are there – albondigas, gambas pil pil, etc. – our advice is to try the butifarra negra (black pudding), carrillada de cerdo (pork cheeks) and queso de cabra al horno (baked goats cheese). Good for… a taste of Spain. Expect to pay… vegetarian tapas from £3.95, meat options from £4.75, paellas from £21.95. Anything else? Booking at weekends is recommended. 271 Union St, AB11 6BR, Tel: 01224 581100, www.cafeandaluz.com.
Christos Greek Taverna If you like authentic Greek fare, Christos will be right up your alley – literally. This hideaway is an Aberdeen institution having welcomed diners for over 25 years. Christos himself is usually on hand and readily lives up to his reputation as one of the city’s friendliest hosts. All the Greek classics feature on the menu and the portion size is as impressive as the atmosphere and service. Good for… friends and family groups looking for a fun night. Expect to pay… starters from £4.75, mains from £10.25 (we recommend the kleftiko at £16.95). Anything else? Be prepared to indulge in some traditional dancing after dessert. 14-20 John St, AB25 1BT, Tel: 01224 636320, www.christos-taverna.com.

Aperitivo Sister restaurant to the much loved Rustico, Aperitivo does excellent cicchetti (Italian tapas if you will) meaning there’s something to suit all palates and appetites but do be warned - these small plates are seriously moreish and you’ll almost certainly be tempted to try ‘just one more’. If you prefer large to little bites, the lamb shank main will be sure to satisfy. Good for… an after work nibble and tipple session. Expect to pay… small plates from £3.20, pastas from £8.20, mains from £13.95. Anything else? Aperitivo hosts fortnightly sommelier sessions priced £28pp for a 90 minute tasting tutorial. 15 Bon Accord St, AB11 6EL, Tel: 01224 232707, www.aperitivoaberdeen.com.

Fyvie Castle
aberdeen | 111
Fyvie Castle, Turriff A royal stronghold until 1390, Fyvie Castle was built in the 13th century by William the Lion (King of the Scots) and handed down to several clan families, Meldrum and Seton among them. The two female ghosts said to frequent this lavish castle are tied to each family. Having requested that she be buried in the walls of a secret room in the castle’s Meldrum Tower, Lady Meldrum’s remains were discovered several centuries later (in the 1920s) and moved to the cemetery. Sightings of a grey lady ghost occurred from that day forth, her chosen place of rest seemingly disturbed. The ‘Green Lady’ is thought to be Lilias Drummond, whose husband Sir Alexander Seton grew resentful when she bore five daughter and no male heirs. Taking a shine to her cousin, Grizel Leslie, folklore says a disgruntled Alexander locked his wife away and starved her to death, murdering any accomplice who tried to assist her escape. When Alexander’s and Grizel’s wedding night arrived, the newlyweds heard odd sighs and scratching outside the window. It would transpire ‘D Lillias Drummond’ had been carved into the stone windowsill – an inscription that can
still be seen today. Some believe the inconsolable ghost of Lilias still wanders the corridors; the fragrant scent of rose petals marking her presence. And the dark tales don’t end there. The famous Scottish laird and prophet ‘True Thomas’ penned the The Weeping Stones of Fyvie upon his visit to the castle. In this, he told of the three sacred stones used to build elements of the castle and grounds being removed from an ancient burial site. Until returned, he warned no male heir would live to inherit the castle. The stones are said to be wet when their surrounding stones are dry, and dry when the others are wet. True to Thomas’s words, no male heir survived to inherit Fyvie Castle, which is now owned by The National Trust.
Burnett Arms Hotel, Kemnay This unassuming pub in the sleepy village of Kemnay allegedly has a ghost in its residence in the form of former owner, Maggie Duffton, who passed away in 1934. Over the course of the years, both landlords and staff have seen a ghostly figure emerge, sometimes wearing a pink wedding dress and requesting to speak to ‘Norman’.

Ardoe House Hotel
Local rumours circulated that there were in fact two coffins buried under the bar, one filled with money, the other containing the remains of Maggie. So in an attempt to put the gruesome stories to rest, landlord Malcolm Edwards enlisted the help of stone mason to tear down the two-foot thick granite wall and reveal to the villagers what precisely lay underneath. There were no coffins, nor was anything peculiar unearthed, but the inexplicable sightings of Maggie Duffton continued.
merchant, Alexander Ogston and his family. Today, on the main stairs remains a portrait of Alexander’s wife, Katherine, and it is here where a ghostly woman has appeared on several occasions. While some believe it to be Katherine herself, others think the apparition may be that of the daughter of a former owner. Falling pregnant after being raped, she tragically would go on to take her own life and that of her child.
Ardoe House Hotel, Aberdeen
Where there are hauntings, there is often legend and the one that follows Norwood Hall Hotel is particularly titillating – and again of Ogston descent. Not one, not two, but three ghosts are said to inhabit this grand country hotel, all having been embroiled in a torrid love triangle, dating back almost 150 years. Previous owner, James Ogston was thought to have bought the property in 1872 (built on the site of 15th century Pitfodels Castle), where he housed his
With its castellated appearance and ample ballroom, Ardoe House Hotel is a popular wedding venue that takes architectural inspiration from the royal residence, Balmoral. Yet the bride isn’t necessarily the only woman seen to be wearing white in this 19th century grey granite mansion. mistress. James meanwhile resided across the river at the nearby Ardoe House with his wife and family. As the years progressed, both wife and mistress demanded James to leave the other, but their wishes were never met. The fractious relationship continued after death, with Norwood rumoured to be haunted by all three parties. While James has been spotted in the dining room, his mistress has been seen on the main stairs, and his wife proving the most prominent, in various parts of the house, including the hall, kitchen and dining room.
Maryculter House Hotel, Kirkton of Maryculter This vast 22-bedroom country house is located on the banks of the River Dee and the same site where Knights Templar were trained. Legend says that a Saracen woman from the Holy Land saved and returned an injured knight to Maryculter. Her kindness would ultimately cost her life however, as a ruling preceptor doubted their relationship platonic and sentenced the Templar to death. The conviction prompted the condemned knight to stab himself, with the woman following suit – but not before cursing the preceptor, who was struck and killed by lightning. There’s been
Meldrum House
numerous sightings of the Templar and his female saviour over the years. Most dramatically, a ghostly knight has been spotted riding over Kingcausie Hill.
Meldrum House Hotel, Oldmeldrum Passing through the hands of the Meldrum family in 1450, this part mansion/part castle saw the Seton family take residence, followed by the Urquhart family in 1670. Today of course it is popular spa/golf hotel and wedding venue, but it also has a ghostly presence in its midst with a white lady ghost appearing to look after young children when left to their own devices.

Inverurie’s proximity to Aberdeen, solid amenities and attractive rural location has won over self-professed city girl Vhairi Walker, who here gives us the insider guide on the place she now calls home. photos ∙ Susie Lowe
K
nown as the ‘heart of Garioch’, Inverurie was founded by David of Huntingdon, Earl of the Garioch and great-great-grandfather of Robert the Bruce. It was at the nearby Hill of Barra in 1308, where the Scottish King himself defeated John Comyn, 3rd Earl of Buchan and Bruce’s fiercest opponent in the civil war that raged alongside the War of Scottish Independence. The Battle of Barra was followed by another bloody conflict between 1,100 Jacobites and 500 Hanoverian troops in 1745. Today, you’ll find a cairn on the bank of the River Don marking the site where swords were drawn and blood was shed. Commemorating two wars waged on foreign soil is Inverurie District War Memorial in the town centre. A tribute to the local servicemen who lost their lives in the first and
second World Wars, the granite sculpture of the lone Gordon Highlander was first unveiled in 1921 – and remains a focal point of the Market Place. The town’s surrounding area is also home to the Neolithic Easter Aquhorthies Stone Circle, the medieval Kinkell Church, and the 15th century Castle Fraser; each historic statements of their time. Although a commuting town, farming remains the main source of economy with Thainstone Mart (the biggest livestock market in Scotland) sitting on the perimeter of the town; the neighbouring paper mill having shut up shop six years ago. The town has several long-standing family-owned businesses; Strachan’s newsagents and Andersons’ furniture

store among them that continue to hold esteem in the town. These are interspersed with larger chain stores and retail parks, which have seen Inverurie burgeon. That’s not to say you won’t find pretty boutiques here – Silver Dapple is worth a look for its chic but affordable European fashion while Interiors by Ashley is a homemakers delight. Much of the daily hustle and bustle occurs in the town centre’s Market Place and West High Street.
Where to eat and drink There are numerous restaurants and cafes to grab a bite to eat. For a daytime coffee, head to the Kilted Frog on the High Street or The Doormouse and Teacup, a few steps away on Burnside, for its vintage tableware. Evening dining extends across the continent with Sabai serving up Thai cuisine and Spice of Life offering Indian. Fennel has long been established on the local restaurant scene and offers
a more European-based menu, and if you’re partial to steak, The Porterhouse Restaurant at Thainstone Mart should keep you happy. Who knows meat better than a farmer’s market after all? While a Friday night in Inverurie can be quiet, Saturdays can be comparatively raucous. Much of the action revolves around neighbouring watering holes, The Butchers Arms and Edwards, which opens up a second floor upstairs at the weekend.

The property market Like many towns in Aberdeenshire, Inverurie is expanding outwards, with new developments cropping up on all edges of the town. So what can we get with a 300k purse? “A modern four-bed detached house or a large three- bed detached house,” according to Paul Macallan, partner of Peterkins Inverurie office. Fortunately for homeowners, prices are continuing to rise in spite of Aberdeen’s downturn. “The average sale price over the year to July 2015 is about £245,000 which indicates approximately a nine per cent rise over the previous year. This is represented by a wide range of property values and types in the town itself and surrounding settlements of Kintore, Kemnay and Oldmeldrum,” Paul explains. The first-time buyer market is thought to be most active, along with those properties in the lower LLBTT levels. And
the most expensive area? “The town has a mix of property values throughout, with high value modern property amidst the modern developments and traditional granite properties in the older part of the town commanding the high real estate prices.” Peterkins residential leasing manager, Martin Kingdon, meanwhile, has noticed a surge in the local rental market. “The letting market in Inverurie and surrounding areas is going from strength to strength with the development of new properties in the area. “We’ve seen an increase in people choosing the leasing path in the past year or so. Average rents in the area (taking into consideration all property demographics), are around £900-£1,000 per calendar month, and seems to be increasing slightly.”

SPOTLIGHT ON The Nail Yard

T
here are some beauty salons that do a little bit of everything. There are others that cleverly know their niche. Case in point, The Nail Yard. A small but fantastically formed nail boutique in Morningside that offers treatments on exactly what its name suggests – nails. But this isn’t just your average nail salon. Step inside this little haven and it’s like the beginning of a spa experience. Serene surroundings, luxe fittings and even a welcome vitamin shot on arrival. The emphasis is on using natural ingredients and the treatment menu and products reflect this – you won’t get extensions or overlays here. What sets the salon apart is that they specialise in Margaret Dabbs manicures, pedicures and award-winning products. A fully trained podiatrist, Margaret set up her series of Foot Clinics and is now famed for the ‘medical pedicure’. There are lots of quirky touches at The Nail Yard, the colour therapy books just one of them. But of course the proof is in the pudding and after experiencing the signature pedicure, from £46, it’s easy to say this nail boutique will pull in the regulars from near and far. BEERLY BELOVED
T
he world’s gone craft beer mad, it’s everywhere. If you’ve been left behind, it’s about time you whet your whistle in the wonderful world of hops, grain and golden nectar. Beer’s no longer the mainstay of flat cap wearing grumps in social clubs; it’s a buzzing scene of winestyle tasting notes, pairings and sampling flights. Here, we’ve taken a look at some of Scotland’s very finest offerings including some brewed right here in Edinburgh. If you’re new to IPAs then you could definitely do worse than opening your account with a Citra Burst by Alechemy. It’s a golden coppery orange IPA with a big off-white head. On the nose, there’s a juicy orange sweetness with citrusy lemon peel and a herbal hint. Flavour wise you’ll get a hit of the zest with some nutty and malt notes along with a crisp citrus bite on the finish. You’ll find it on tap at The Peartree and it lends itself well to spicy food. Alechemy’s Head brewer, James Davies, has a Masters in chemistry and a PhD in microbiology (studying the genetics of brewery yeast). Those set in their lager drinking ways should give Schiehallion by Harviestoun a whirl, named after the

misty mountain near Pitlochry and winner of a multitude of awards including three times gold at the Great British Beer Festival. It’s a golden clear lager with a lasting head. The aroma offers up some bread and honey scents and the flavour is extra crisp with some notes of fresh-cut grass, lychee and mango with a smoky undercurrent and long dry finish. Schiehallion works well with seafood, light pasta dishes or with your Sunday roast and it’s on draft at Montpeliers. Brewing and Distilling and their new firm, Natural Selection Brewing. It’s causing a bit of a fuss on the brewing scene and, after a rigorous sampling, it’s easy to see why. It’s a slightly hazy, bright amber pour with aromas of deep peach and toffee malt. The taste is hoppy with some light marmalade and caramel notes and a strong bitter finish, it’d be fantastic with a steak or other rare red meats and it’s available from Growler Beers and the Blackbird bar in Tollcross. One of the forerunners of the craft brewing craze is the Edinburgh based, Innis & Gunn, whose flagship beer was created by accident. A whisky distiller approached the brewers looking to flavour their casks with the sweet, malty character of beer. The beer-infused wood gave their scotch a fantastic flavour but the real surprise came from an inquisitive distiller having a taste of the normally discarded beer. The infusions had worked in reverse with the beer gaining toffee, vanilla and oak notes from the whisky casks. It’s now matured for 77 days in Bourbon casks to gain its distinct flavour profile, winner of Grand Gold at the Monde Selection Awards. Innis & Gunn is fairly omnipresent these days but for the best experience head to its Beer Kitchen on Lothian Road where you can enjoy it straight from the maturing casks.

Edinburgh’s new wave
Edinburgh’s New Waverley development is fast becoming the Capital’s most talked about new destination.
Here, Lukas Nakos, MD of Artisan Real Estate Investors the company behind the scheme explains why he thinks it’s going to be so special. “Put quite simply, nowhere in the world will be like New Waverley. Lukas Nakos, MD Artisan Real Estate Investors
For a start, this exciting new development lies

right at the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage site, in Edinburgh’s historic Old Town. Linking Waverley Station with the Royal Mile, the huge 7.5 acre site is one of the last missing pieces of the Edinburgh city centre jigsaw - and construction is well and truly underway. With the first phase scheduled for completion in 2016, it will bring the Old Town kicking and screaming back into the heart of the city, providing a brand new destination in which to live, work or visit.
Unique environment Reflecting the unique environment in which it sits, New Waverley represents a fascinating contrast between old and new. At the heart of the development is a £6.5 million public square, surrounded by an eclectic mix of restaurants, cafés, shops and hotels - as well as cutting-edge offices and new homes. Three hotels are already taking shape, including an Adagio Aparthotel and a Hub by Premier Inn.
Victorian arches Yet interlinked within its contemporary footprint are glimpses of its historic past which will form a vital part of its future. This includes a row of historic Victorian arches, set for completion later on this year, which is being transformed into a new arts, retail and leisure quarter, packed with independent traders, restaurants and bars. Interest in the arches has been high from a wide variety of potential occupiers, with the largest ‘flagship’ arch designed over three levels and crowned with a rooftop terrace with sweeping views over Waverley Valley. So, keep an eye out for New Waverley, the Capital’s most talked about new destination. Most significantly, it is changing people’s view of the Old Town - no longer a historic curiosity, but now a vibrant, living and exciting place to be.” To find out more about New Waverley please visit: www.newwaverley.com

PROPERTY WISE
Can I buy before I sell? It’s the question most homeowners need answering first. Richard Loudon of Simpson & Marwick explains how it works.
T
he first matter that has to be addressed when meeting with potential selling clients is whether they can offer for their next property before they sell their current one. The dynamics of the market have changed dramatically since pre-recession. In those days, most buyers would house hunt and make a successful offer on a property before marketing their own property. It has all changed now. I would estimate that now nine out of 10 sellers have to sell before they buy due to market uncertainty and buyers lacking confidence that they’ll get a mortgage offer from a lender. Previously you would view houses, submit offers and once successful, the sellers were generally confident that you would come up with the money on the entry date. As a result there was no real pressure to conclude missives (exchange contracts) particularly swiftly and missives generally took three to four weeks to conclude. Without the delay that Home Reports now cause, you would then put your property on the market within three or four days and by the time you were expected to conclude missives for your purchase you would have already had numerous parties round your house, probably several Notes of Interest and, in many cases, have already declined offers. At that point you
were entirely confident that your house would sell well and as a result were willing to commit to a contractually binding contract to purchase before you had a similar contract for the sale of your house. Those days are now gone. Nowadays when acting for a selling client, we ask buyers in depth questions about their ability to fund the purchase. If they have not yet sold their own property, we ask whether they have a ‘Plan B’ to be able to pay for the property if their own house has not sold. In most cases if they still have to sell and there is no robust Plan B, sellers will not agree to sell to them. The result of this is that if you cannot afford to fund the purchase of a new property without actually obtaining the funds from the sale of your existing property, then sellers will not consider you to be a credible buyer. You should therefore at least have your own property under offer before pursuing another property.

HAIR NO MORE
The lowdown on IPL words ∙ Zen Lifestyle
W
ith technological developments in the beauty industry, being hair-free is not only a dream, it’s a reality and within our reach. With more pressure on our time, our wallets and our ever increasing desire to look good, the solution is IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light therapy to give it its proper name. IPL is more popular than ever, a fact attributed to the success of the treatment. “Our clients have increasing time pressures and a lot of people can’t fit in a wax every few weeks,” says Zen director, Fiona Fowley. “Clients were spending a huge amount on waxing when they could be permanently hair-free for less money in the long run.” The health benefits of IPL hair removal are also a consideration for people suffering from painful skin conditions as a result of shaving too often. Zen client Lucy Ingles said “I was getting terrible razor rash and in-growing hairs which were itchy and sore. Waxing can be painful so I opted for IPL. I’ve never had to shave my legs again and it’s really liberating.” So what’s involved and more importantly, does it hurt? According to Zen Senior Beauty Therapist Katie Fraser, IPL is suitable for most people and virtually pain free. “We ask clients to do a simple skin patch test and consultation to check IPL is suitable for their skin type.” One thing’s for sure, imagining a life without razors is heaven. IPL is available at Zen Lifestyle with discounts starting at 30 per cent on courses throughout September 2015. Zen Lifestyle has three award-winning clinics in central Edinburgh: Teviot Pl, Tel: 0131 226 6777, Bruntsfield, Tel: 0131 477 3535 and Hanover St, Tel: 0131 225 7009, zen-lifestyle.com.

hen someone says “10 years ago”, does anyone else still think of ’95? Anyone? No? While I try to wrap my head around 2005 being a full decade ago let’s cast our minds back to the winners and losers across 10 years of men’s fashion in Edinburgh and let’s hope nostalgia doesn’t stir up too many bad memories - I’m looking at you Von Dutch caps.
The early 2000s or noughties or aughts or whatever you called them were largely dominated by garage rock revivalist groups such as The Strokes and The Libertines. Thus, as i-on was launching in ’05, a large swathe of Edinburgh was (and still are) squeaking around in painted-on skinny jeans, western shirts, vintage band T-shirts and wincklepickers. Over in the
mainstream; G-Star was cleaning up on the denim front thanks to Apple’s new designer, Marc Newson while Livestrong bands were on every wrist in the city, remember them? The turn of the century offered a fairly seismic shift for menswear as Euan Boyek, regional head of menswear at Harvey Nichols explains. “Celebrities like David Beckham really helped make

That same year Goodstead opened its sneakerphile nirvana on Bread Street, the compact boutique was a breath of fresh air for Edinburgh; offering avant-garde indie labels and top tier sports garbs. It wasn’t all good news though; Cruise, the city’s go-to for high end directional designer entered administration. The firm’s future was quickly secured by Sir Tom Hunter (followed by Sports Direct in 2012) but not without a slight scaling back of retail operations. The later closure of their George Street
casualwear store marked the sad end of an era - the vacant site would later be occupied by preppy American brand Abercrombie & Fitch. While the turn of the decade was dominated by skulls and skinny ties, the biggest trend was yet to break. Alexander McQueen’s 2010 collection had every designer under the sun incorporating craniums into their work while the sharper dressed went all Don Draper as tailoring felt the US aftershocks of the Mad Men Effect. The biggest look of the past 10 years though would send razor blade profits into a downward spiral as facial hair fever took hold. The vintage dapper gent fad, influenced by the Americana revival, infiltrated menswear and lifestyle in an all-

encompassing way, helping that most cringe worthy of words ‘hipster’ into common marketing vernacular. Tweed, beards, lumberjack shirts, bow ties and smart ‘50s work wear was the new street uniform and the sweet scent of ‘50s barber shop pomade could be whiffed from Portobello to Pollock Halls. The perfect time then for the hipster mecca Urban Outfitters to set up shop in the old Virgin premises on Princes Street. The end of the recession brought a slew of new players such as Common People, Liam Gallagher’s
one-stop-mod-shop, Pretty Green, emporium of all things blokey, The Brotique and champions of quality and craftsmanship, Dick’s, with the opening of the Stockbridge boutique in 2012 filling a gap in the market for a shop specialising in classic, well-made clothes. Edinburgh institution, Xile, refocused their business with a new flagship store on Frederick Street after closing their Princes Mall Directional and most recently, Kestin Hare, the head designer for Nigel Cabourn, launched his eponymous label’s shops in Stockbridge and George Street.
So we’re nearly up to date and beard/tweed mania has had its day and the new kid on the block is the Japanese-inspired ‘Sports Luxe’ trend. Minimal, sleek, tailored urban wear in monochrome sports materials combined with couture sneakers, it’s a look that dominated the catwalks. Whether you’re a follower of trends or not Edinburgh’s independent fashion scene is flourishing I’ll leave you with the wise words of Andrew Dick of Dick’s in Stockbridge, “real style doesn’t care about trends and fashion”.

TURNER PRIZE 2015 Scotland welcomes The Turner Prize for the first time and Glasgow’s Tramway has the hosting honours. Europe’s most prestigious contemporary art award, and the biggest award in British art with £25,000 going to the winner and £5,000 to the other three nominees, the Turner Prize is awarded to a British artist/collective under the age of 50 for an outstanding exhibition or other presentation of their work in the preceding year. It’s fitting that Glasgow should be the first Scottish city to host the event as the iconic Glasgow School of Art has produced five Turner Prize winners, and an impressive 30 per cent of nominees since 2006. The city is again represented in this year’s shortlist with Canadian Janice Kerbel nominated for her operatic work Doug, which was commissioned by The Common Guild Glasgow and

he idea for the Scottish Style Awards came to me when I was a buyer and PR for designer chain Cruise. I spent over a decade working across the world’s style capitals and met so many talented Scots operating in elevated positions of creative authority. It struck me as unusual how they were unknowns in their home country yet successful internationally. The aspiration for the first SSA was to create a showcase celebrating the achievements of these people, as well as shining a spotlight on the unprecedented swell of breakthrough talent that was emerging in 2005. The first Scottish Style Awards took place on 30 September 2005 and noone, including me, really knew what to expect. It was staged in Tramway which, as Europe’s largest mixeduse arts space, provided the perfect edgy backdrop. Glasgow has so many standout buildings we are fortunate to have used for the SSA across the last 10 years. Kelvingrove Art Gallery

& Museum feels like its natural home now and it really has the wow factor. The Old Fruitmarket, which also hosted the awards, is steeped in history too. The Scottish Style Awards was only possible through the support of our very first two partners, both of whom continue to be with us a decade later; Moët & Chandon and Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, the latter of whom under the leadership of Scott Taylor was launching a new brand for the city in 2005 called Glasgow: Scotland with Style. The timing was perfect. As long as the Scottish Style Awards exist, Glasgow will be the host city. That said, the nominees and winners are very much pan Scotland and international. is one of the keys to its success and longevity. The SSA also enjoys huge respect and that for me is incredibly important. I have countless standout memories of the decade and numerous new relationships have been borne for so many people as a result of meeting at the SSA. Being able to honour Shirley Manson, who flew in from LA to accept Most Stylish Female in 2008 was special. Having the support of judges such as Douglas Gordon, Tracey Emin, Rankin, Roisin Murphy, Peter Saville, Elle Macpherson, Sam McKnight and Dylan Jones. Recognising a new Breakthrough Star in 2011 called Emeli Sandé, who delivered a now legendary live performance in Kelvingrove and whose debut album shot straight to number one the next day. Honouring Alister Mackie, the world’s most influential creative director and stylist. And Timorous Beasties, Graven Images, DF Concerts, Dame Vivienne Westwood, Andrew Fairlie, Gillian Berrie… as I said, so many memories. Music has always been an integral element of the awards and we get as excited about artists such as The Phantom Band and Mother and the Addicts as we do globally-

recognised icons. Many of our hosts too are music-related; Edith Bowman, Lauren Laverne, Nick Grimshaw, Sophie Ellis Bextor and Mike Keat of The Cuban Brothers. Fashion is another important part of the Scottish Style Awards and we are immensely proud to have awarded Jonathan Saunders and Christopher Kane with the Designer of the Year accolade, the very first award either had been given by any institution. Indeed, to this day, the one and only time Christopher’s full

collection has been presented in Scotland was at the SSA in 2006 at Kelvingrove. He and his sister, Tammy, personally managed the show backstage. I am often asked how do you define style. Which of course is impossible to do. Style is indefinable. But you generally know when someone or something is ‘stylish’. It’s being in possession of a certain je ne se quoi. With that in mind, we consciously showcase ‘style’ in its broadest sense with accolades for the nation’s most exciting rising stars alongside the most stylish bars, restaurants, hotels and retailers as well as the headline tastemakers. This has been the inclusive approach of the Scottish Style Awards across the last 10 years.

DINNER @ CÔTE words · Susie Cormack Bruce
I
am a dedicated Francophile. I love French style, cinema, wines, and seriously stinky French cheeses - despite my husband threatening divorce with each round of Epoisses I bring home… The only thing that rivals my passion for all things French – hubby excluded – is this fair city of ours. So it’s been to my eternal frustration that two of my favourite things don’t seem to get on terribly well, on the culinary front at least. That’s not saying that Glasgow chefs can’t cook à la française. They can and some brilliantly so but while I appreciate the French fine dining experience, I rarely crave it. Call me a peasant, but I’d have a hearty cassoulet over a quenelle of foie gras any day of the semaine. So on discovering French brasserie chain Côte had finally ventured north, off I trotted, husband in tow, to the West Nile Street eatery.
Traditional striped awnings festoon the exterior and on entering we were welcomed by greeters (in the French, not Glaswegian sense) who showed us to our table. The room was elegant but relaxed with a selection of standalone tables and banquettes, all looking generous in size. We enjoyed Côte’s signature cocktail, a Kir Royale, £4.25, as we surveyed the menu with my hubby impressed with the choice and the fact you don’t need a mastery of French to decipher the menu. One aspect of French culture my husband is remarkably fluent in is wine and for this occasion he selected the Pierre Sourdais’ Chinon, £23.95, which proved to be a cracker of a cabernet franc. On the food front all the classics feature from steak and moules frites to savoury crepes and salad nicoise, so to start

I HAPPILY FINISHED OFF THE LAST OF OUR EXCELLENT WINE WHILE MY HUSBAND FULLY IMMERSED HIMSELF IN THE GALLIC EXPERIENCE BY ORDERING AN ARMAGNAC AND WAXED LYRICAL ON THE HISTORY OF THE AULD ALLIANCE
I went for the steak tartare, £6.95, while my nearest and dearest chose the charcuterie board, £6.75. Both appeared promptly and were well presented and proportioned allowing us to sample the other’s dish. My tartare was excellent with a subtle splash of cognac and my husband’s meat feast didn’t disappoint either, especially the duck rillettes. My main of pan roasted bacon wrapped haddock, £12.50, was tasty and the pea puree surprisingly moreish but I developed serious food envy after a bite of my hubby’s chargrilled corn-fed Breton chicken, £10.50. I wasn’t sure about his choice of a wild mushroom side sauce, £2.25, but on tasting the bird with the rich, pungent, creamy sauce, I had to admit the boy did good. Without a doubt, the best chicken we’ve had in the city. Too full to succumb to dessert – even Cote’s speciality crème caramel, £4.95, which was winking provocatively at us from another table – I happily finished off the last of our excellent wine while my husband fully immersed himself in the Gallic experience by ordering an Armagnac, £3.75, and waxed lyrical on the history of the Auld Alliance – which on this showing will surely go from strength to strength. aving grown up in the seaside town of St Andrews, starting life above her parents fish and chip shop no less, Lisa Palompo Dixon always harboured an ambition of living in a Victorian house with the three c’s; (high) ceilings, cornicing and character. “That’s why I had that ‘can’t let it go’ feeling when I first walked through the door seven years ago,” says Lisa
of the Paisley home she shares with her husband Graham and children, five-year-old Rory and two-year-old Camilla, affectionately known as CC. That’s not to say the sandstone property was quite as pleasing as you see it now. “The previous owners were fans of orange, multiple layers of wallpaper and dark wood so we knew we had a bit of a project on our hands,” explains Lisa.

The house looked liveable until the couple started to tackle the decor and realised how badly the DIY had been done resulting in more work than they initially anticipated. “We started small by taking on projects ourselves but brought in the professionals when required,” says Lisa. “Cabinet maker Fergus McCrudden of Chisel Me Timbers has been invaluable to us throughout every stage of our home renovation with the team handcrafting the bathroom, office wall units, kitchen, built-in pantry and garage doors.” Lisa, who studied interior design at night school, and Graham, who works in the furniture and interiors industry selling furniture and home accessories to trade, had a clear vision of the home they wanted and set about creating

distinct looks throughout the four bedroom property - from modern heritage in the lounge and hall, to Scandi-Dutch style in the home office/family room. “The kitchen has been brought up to date whilst in keeping with the house by way of a refitted pantry, range cooker and brick-work tiles. “We love using flowers everywhere too – brilliant for a quick injection of colour – so we’re very lucky to have Lorraine Woods as our local florist.” The couple’s home also features a number of one-off pieces, most notably the handcrafted table in the lounge. “That was a wedding present made for us by the cabinet maker Michael Acey himself replicating the isle of Staffa,” informs Lisa.
“Sterling Furniture has also been a big source for us – the Glasgow store carries a full range of home accessories under one roof so it’s been an invaluable source for home styling. “We also import a lot from Holland via Graham’s work so we can try out new products before they come to market.” Now that’s a busman’s holiday all houseproud homeowners would love to indulge in. Since taking part in this article, Lisa and Graham have put their home on the market at offers over £285,000 with agents Vanilla Square.
