INTRODUCTION

i-on this month

As we speedily head into autumn and all the magical colours associated with the season, it’s also the best time of year for an amazing colourful adventure of your own. We love an autumn break and our features editor, Dean Newton, hunts down the places with the best viewpoints to see the Aurora Borealis in full shining glory on page 34. We also cosy up and get all at one with nature (kind of) with a weekend trip to Ardgartan Argyll, hot tub included (p68). Susie Cormack, our Glasgow lifestyle editor, has used the start of the new season to divulge the newest places on the Glasgow food scene on page 104 and we’re also back with the i-on reader Food and Drink awards; bigger and better than before as we expand the categories and the cities. Turn to pages 42 to see the shortlist of nominees in Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow and St Andrews and find out how you can vote for your favourites. If the new season has inspired change, Emily Murray is tipped off by some of the best interiors bloggers around on their favourite trends for the home (p72). And, we’ve taken

the interiors vibe a step further with this month’s competition, a £500 shopping spree at contemporary furniture store Tangram, exclusive stockists of brands such as B&B Italia and Maxalto & Montis. Turn to page 14 to enter. Congratulations also go to last month’s competition winner, Fiona Hughes, who won Kennett watches for him and her. Until next month, enjoy i-on.

IN SHORT with N.D. Gomes

Book Club

THE LATEST MUST READS

A LITTLE LIFE by Hanya Yanagihara One of this year’s most talked about novels, this is a story of love, friendship and heartbreak.

N.D. Gomes is an Aberdeenshire born author who now lives in Boston. Her debut novel, Dear Charlie, is out next month. Why did you become an author? For me, writing provides an outlet to express myself. I’ve always had a big imagination and easily get lost in my own thoughts, so writing allows me to put it somewhere. I always had the word “daydreamer” on my school report cards. What is your new book about? It’s a story about overcoming loss and a community rocked by a school shooting. 1996 was a tragic year in the UK and the aftermath changed the way we think about guns and the safety of our schools. Although I never directly reference Dunblane in the book, I wanted to reflect the tone of that time. What gives Scotland its edge? The people. Scotland is a warm and welcoming community, and no matter how long I’ve been away, when I come back it’s like I never left. Pre-order Dear Charlie now from www.amazon.co.uk.

18

AT THE WATER’S EDGE by Sara Gruen A tale of folklore and monsters set in the Scottish Highlands, this is a touching and haunting love story. HOW TO FIND LOVE IN A BOOK SHOP by Veronica Henry A story for all booklovers, this really is an enchanting read. YES PLEASE by Amy Poehler A fabulously witty, smart and honest memoir from comedian and actress Amy Poehler. HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD (Parts one and two) by JK Rowling, John Tiffany and Jack Thorne The much anticipated follow up script/novel picks up with Harry 19 years later, a must read for all Harry Potter fans.

Ricky Baillie’s

Edinburgh Born and raised in the capital, photographer Ricky lives in Edinburgh with his wife Lia and their two daughters, Elle and Sienna. Here he gives the lowdown on his work and life in the city. What kind of photography do you do? I specialise in artistic documentary wedding photography. The approach allows me to capture moments as they are happening naturally creating photos that are timeless, authentic and creative. Best part about being a wedding photographer? It’s immensely fun, rewarding and challenging. I always push myself to create unique images looking for scenes that could stand out and act as amazing backdrops. Travelling abroad to work is also great – places like Greece really inspire me.

Best places for… Eating out? Kanpai Sushi, it’s delicious. Or Fishers Leith for a date night. They serve the freshest, flavoursome seafood. Cocktails? Tonic bar, the cocktails are awesome and there’s always a great atmosphere. A quick escape? I love going for runs along Cramond beach. It’s a great place to clear your head.

Biggest mistake people make when taking their own pictures? They forget about lighting. You need to use natural light to your advantage or indeed manufactured light. Switch the camera from auto to manual mode and get experimenting, it is the best way to learn. The best things in life are… Greek sunsets. Being rubbish at golf with close friends. Drinking espresso. My wife and our two little girls. For more information or to read Ricky’s blog visit www.rickybaillie.com. Kanpai Sushi

Hayley Scanlan’s

Dundee Young Scottish Designer of the Year, Hayley Scanlan, burst onto the scene in 2009 when her Duncan of Jordanstone Textile Design Degree Show New Frontiers caught the eye of supermodel Erin O’Connor and vogue.co.uk, naming Hayley as Scotland’s coolest young designer. Here she tells us what she loves about her hometown. Home is where the heart is – how true is this statement for you? I was born and bred in Dundee. I moved away for a year in 2007 to LA and London for internships at Jeremy Scott and I-D Magazine but became really homesick and came home. It is important to me to raise my boys around all my family and friends. Also, I have a massive customer base for H.S in Scotland and I couldn’t be where I am today without them.

Best places for… Cocktails? The Strawberry Daiquiri from DCA Jute Bar is divine. A walk in the park? Roseangle Park, I am always there with my two twin boys, Freddie and Oscar. To shop? Spex Pistols (pictured left), one of the coolest shops in Dundee. The staff are amazing and they have a great selection of glasses.

What excites you most about Dundee? Probably the changes and transformation. It is great to see as there are more things happening and opportunities available. Biggest change you’ve seen in recent years? The creative community is constantly expanding. The increasing number of designers and artists based in the city is amazing too. Most likely to be seen…at Wasps Studios where my studio is based. To see Hayley’s latest collection, visit www.hayleyscanlan.com.

MUSIC

T

hey’re a young band whose time in existence barely adds up to a little over 18 months, but already Irish duo Saint Sister have had a go at trying to define their own genre. They like to call themselves ‘atmosfolk’, and it’s a name which sums up just how singular their sound is. Within the same song, they’ll play rich and atmospheric folk alongside a minimal electronic backing which reminds of artists like James Blake. Next to unknown outside of their native Ireland, the pair have begun to build up a reputation in earnest since appearing at the huge and career defining South by South West music festival in Austin, Texas earlier this year. They only played their first London date at the end of 2015 with the Parallel Lines brand, and now they’ve been featured on BBC Introducing and are about to embark upon their second UK tour. Hopefully we’ll be hearing much more of them before long. The pair are Gemma Doherty from Derry and Morgan MacIntyre from Belfast, both of whom now live in Dublin and are a part of the city’s vibrant music scene alongside other breakout local groups like SPIES and Wyvern Lingo. Neither comes from a musical family but both are classically trained, and they’ve emerged from a background of individual solo work prior to this new project together. Produced by Alex Ryan (bassist with Hozier’s live band), the debut EP Madrid was released in November

32

THEY LIKE TO CALL THEMSELVES ‘ATMOSFOLK’, A NAME WHICH SUMS UP JUST HOW SINGULAR THEIR SOUND IS

2015, and was the first taste a wider audience had heard of Saint Sister’s music. The opening title track is the pick of the bunch, a sparse bed of electronic beats paired with a recurring harp line (they use the instrument in their live show) and the looping choral lyrics “I don’t know where you go / I would only meet you there / I could never keep you there.” The pair have said in the past that love seems to be the recurring theme of their music, although there’s a darker complexion to Castles and Blood Moon, two of the other songs on the record; ironically, the fearsomely titled Versions of Hate is possibly the most tender thing they’ve so far released. Since they got back from Texas there have been further recording sessions back home in Ireland, and the hope is that we might hear some more music soon after these latest tour dates roll around. Saint Sister play The Poetry Club, Glasgow, Saturday 17 September. Their debut release the Madrid EP is out on Trout Records. www.saintsisterband.com.

Prior to science figuring all this out, people were free to make their own assumptions, and understandably, they assumed them to be godly or other-worldly. The Chinese, for example, associated the lights with dragons and believed them to be part of skyward battle between good and evil, Inuit tribes assumed the Aurora was the ghostly spirits of dead people playing a macabre ball game with the skull of a walrus (obviously) and the Fins believed in a fire fox who could run so fast that the sparks from his tail would fly into the sky. and, while the best viewing will be at the peak of an 11 year solar cycle which began in 2014, there are plenty of places around the world to see the lights without waiting. The main elements to consider on your light seeking quest are light pollution, latitude and clear skies. Areas at least 30km from cities and heavy population are best to avoid the accumulative effect of city lights and you’re unlikely to see the Aurora anywhere more southerly than 35 degrees north, however there’s more to it than simply heading up country. The lights occur in an oval band offset from the earth’s north magnetic pole (not the same as the north pole) by around 20 degrees (pictured left). As luck would have it, our own fair shores lie in the sweet spot of said latitude and there are numerous vantage points around the country. activity cycle, the best opportunities are further north, coastal or on higher ground. Many budding sky watchers flock to Galloway Forest Park; home to the only Dark Sky Park in the UK. Other good options include the Moray Coast, Cairngorms or the west coast around Ullapool and rural Aberdeenshire. Autumn and winter offer the most viewing activity but be prepared to exercise some patience, there are no guarantees. AuroraWatch UK is a fantastic resource for monitoring solar activity and getting alerts of where and when viewings will be possible, download the app or follow their social media for up-to-the-minute updates. There are certainly ways to mitigate the potential

disappointment of missing the phenomenon but it’s best to consider seeing the lights as a bonus, as such if you can organize activities around your hunting then all the better. One of our favourite options is to get a flight booked to Reykjavik and book yourself onto the Aurora Floating Tour. You’ll float around in a natural hot spring, the oldest swimming pool in Iceland, where the water holds at around 39 degrees. Relaxing music plays from underwater speakers while you succumb to an in-water massage and, if you’re lucky, watch the night sky dance. Normally heading to bed would be ‘game over’ in terms of sky watching but not so here, not if you book into a bubble lodge. “What’s that?” you say, well it’s an inflated

bubble structure in a secluded part of the forest, pressurized with a noiseless ventilation system and a thermostat, meaning you’re toasty even in the Icelandic winter. Best yet, you can gaze the stars, sky and nature from your cosy double bed, kinda like camping, except it’s fun. Your best shot at a sighting in Iceland is from September to mid April, this spell offers the darkest nights and clearest weather. Finally, why not turn your quest into a fantastic Christmas adventure and head to see Santa in Finnish Lapland at the same time. Fly into Helsinki then then head to the countryside to the Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort where you’ll find plenty to do, such as reindeer safaris, snowsports and visiting Santa in his huge Celebration House. Best though is the accommodation, opt for a Keloglass Igloo which offers a best-of-both-worlds combination of cosy luxury log cabin and glassroofed igloo dome for star gazing, Santa spying and, our raison d’être, Aurora watching – and a big bucket list tick.

S

cotland’s food and drink industry goes from strength to strength with a fresh batch of venues, chefs and Michelin stars each year. It’s an industry that deserves accolades and celebration and, with our partners and fellow foodies Deliveroo, we’re delighted i-on is helping to celebrate it. It’s our third year of the awards and, with our expansion last year, we’ve grown the competition to a national affair. Like last year we’ve kick-started the proceedings by pulling together a shortlist of food and drink establishments that we associate with i-on: namely places we like, work with and or write about on a regular basis. With a few obvious exceptions, mainly Michelin

42

starred restaurants, we’re looking for the best bars, restaurants, bistros and coffee shops in town – with i-on readers holding the voting power. Now it’s over to you to take a look at our nominees and cast a vote for your favourite sources of culinary goodness, giving them a chance of being officially awarded an i-on stamp of approval. Voting opens at 9am on 01 September and closes at midday on 06 October, the winners will be announced in our special November issue of i-on. To place your vote, visit www.ionmagazine. co.uk/awards. This is also where you will find all terms and conditions on voting.

SO SOLID 1 CREW There’s a quiet revolution going on in the men’s fragrance world and it’s wax based. Solid colognes are gaining fans daily. The long lasting scents, rather than drying out skin, contain ingredients like jojoba and shea butter to moisturise and protect your skin. They’re super pocket/travel friendly too. Here are a few of our favourite picks.

Alfred Lane – Bravado The Alfred Lane range has a bit of an old school, manly vibe. This option encapsulates nutmeg, sandalwood, leather and tobacco and it’s £14 for a small tin. www.executive-shaving.co.uk.

2

Solid Cologne – Kahn These guys hit the opposite end of the spectrum with more contemporary, complex aromas. Kahn offers up florals and fresh herbals with a musky base, just £12. www.solidcologne.co.uk.

3

Solid State – Journeyman Somewhere between the two is Solid State; grown-up scents for fans of Tom Ford or Creed. Journeyman is a citrusy affair with top notes of Mandarin, a Cedar base and a rich vetiver hit at £20. www.solidstateformen.com.

MODERN GOTHIC Wearing a red black glossy lip is a strong statement but if you prefer a softer look try teaming it with a warm orange eye. Orange is surprisingly flattering, complementing many eye colours, especially blue. Recreate this look: Use Revlon’s Super Lustrous Lipstick in Black Cherry or Illamasqua Glamore Lipstick in Vampette Deep Berry Satin Finish. Mix with an orange eyeshadow such as Shu Uemura pressed eyeshadow in Orange or try MAC Veluxe Pearlfusion Shadow in Amberluxe (pictured left).

MODISH RETRO A classic combination that never goes out of fashion, bring the look bang up to date with smoky eyes. It shouldn’t be too pristine so emulate a morning-afterthe-night-before look, with intense rings of rock chic grunge. The nude lip accentuates the intensity of the eyes while adding a touch of innocence. Recreate this look: Isa Dora Eye Shadow Palette in Smokey Eyes or Estée Lauder Pure Colour Eyeshadow in Dark Ego. For a perfect nude try Bobbi Brown Lip Colour in Melba Peach, Bourgeois Rouge Lipstick Pretty in Nude or Stila Stay all Day Liquid Lipstick Caramelo.

59

BEAUTY

SOPHISTICATED DOLLY The red matte lip is a modern classic staple but turn up the glamour volume with big lashes. Add lots of mascara to curled lashes to open up your eyes to the max or try falsies for added fun and impact. Use singles or cut full strips into clumps to create a doll like, playful lash line. Recreate this look: Autograph Matte Velvet Lipstick or MAC’s legendary Ruby Woo. Ardell Demi Wispies and Eylure Individual Lash combination package are foolproof.

NIGHT VISION

WAVE GOODBYE TO WEARING LENSES OR GLASSES DURING THE DAY AND TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT NOCTURNAL CONTACT LENSES FROM BLACK & LIZARS. ONLY WORN AT NIGHT, HERE THE EXPERTS EXPLAIN HOW THEY WORK.

“O

rthokeratology (Ortho-K) is a method of fitting contact lenses overnight so that vision is clear throughout the day without lenses or glasses. This sounds impossible but it is achieved by gently reshaping the surface of the cornea to correct vision,” explains Morven Campbell, clinical services manager at Black & Lizars. “It is completely reversible and can be a better option than standard disposable lenses or glasses for some. “Suitable for short-sighted (myopic) patients, nocturnal contact lenses can correct up to about -4.50 and are ideal if you work in a dry, dusty environment or if you enjoy sports, as it makes swimming, cycling and running much easier. “Studies have also shown that nocturnal lenses can reduce the amount of myopia children take

64

into adulthood. ‘Myopia progression’ is the term given to the increase in glasses prescription that happens throughout our growing years. “Higher levels of myopia mean more risk of eye problems, poorer vision and potential sight loss. Fitting Nocturnal lenses at a young age has been shown by numerous studies to reduce this progression by up to 50 per cent.” Black & Lizars practices in Gordon Street, Glasgow, and Frederick Street, Edinburgh, have optometrists that specialise in fitting Nocturnal contact lenses. TRIED AND TESTED The Matt Roberts Wellness Retreat at Gleneagles words Rebecca McCosh

W

hen an email dropped into my inbox presenting me with the opportunity to spend a couple of days at the five star Gleneagles on a wellness retreat, my immediate reaction was to reply, ‘Where do I sign up?’ On the itinerary was high intensity training, running drills, weight sessions and hill trekking. Yet despite visualising my sweaty, red-faced self struggling for breath, for some inexplicable reason I couldn’t wait to get involved. On arrival, I was introduced to personal trainer to the stars, Matt Roberts, then put straight into action with a series of stretches to limber up for what lay ahead. So far, so easy. This was followed by 45 minutes of high intensity circuits featuring burpees, sprints and lunges. A few minutes to ‘catch my breath’ (or attempt to control my panting) and it was onto a core session involving planking, yoga positions and the ‘armadillo’ move (a nifty ab workout, in case you’re wondering). We’d managed to cram all this into just one morning so it was a relief to head to Gleneagles’ Deseo restaurant for a delicious lunch. Before I

could get too comfortable though I was back on my feet and trekking up Ben Shee - a killer on the legs but totally worth the burn. By the time we returned, I’d earned my evening downtime – a massage at ESPA Life followed by a leisurely dinner in The Strathearn restaurant. Day two was just as fast paced as the first; a scenic morning run around the golf course followed by more strength training and core sessions. Matt was positive and encouraging throughout, nothing like the bootcamp drill sergeant sadist I’d imagined and I really felt inspired. Was the retreat motivating? Absolutely. Did I go home and head straight out for a run? No, I’m not crazy. But once the aching muscles had calmed down I worked some of the exercises I’d learnt into a new regime and I’ve been sticking to it.

The next Matt Roberts Wellness Retreat at Gleneagles runs from 30 September - 02 October 2016. For more visit www.gleneagles.com, Tel: 0800 389 3737.

WEEKENDERS

WEEKENDERS Ardgartan Argyll words Jo Morris

I

n my imagination, I’m the sort of parent who embraces nature and takes my young son camping, building fires, singing around said fire, building dens, foraging and paddling in streams and lakes. In the real world, I like to sleep on a mattress with 100 per cent cotton sheets, wash in an en suite bathroom and wake up when I’ve had enough sleep and not because the sun has risen at 3.30am. So a luxury lodge seemed to be the perfect solution for the mother I am and the mother I pretend I am.

68

Set amongst forest but within metres of Loch Lomond, the lodge at Ardgartan Argyll is as close to nature as you can get without actually lying on a ground sheet and feeling the creak in your joints. With comfortable bedrooms complete with white towels and sheets, en suite bathrooms and a fully equipped kitchen, the lodge appeased my inner prima donna whilst allowing the earth mother a look in too. But wait, there’s more. For the piece de resistance of these lodges is the hot tub on the deck looking out at the forest.

WEEKENDERS

A LUXURY LODGE SEEMED TO BE THE PERFECT SOLUTION FOR THE MOTHER I AM AND THE MOTHER I PRETEND I AM

Kitted out in wellies, raincoats and sunglasses (this is Scotland), we headed into the forest. We spotted giant mushrooms but didn’t pick them because to be honest they could’ve been toadstools. We opted instead for collecting sticks and if the armful I had to lug back for my son tells anything I would say we totally nailed that skill. We managed a paddle in the loch but when my son realised how cold it was, we all agreed that a dip in the hot tub was preferable. And that’s how we spent three happy days. Doing just enough adventure to feel like good parents whilst, when he was fast asleep, patting ourselves on the back with a dip in the hot tub and glass of wine, taking in the incredible mountain views. And no we didn’t quite manage a forest fire but we did barbecue some sausages so I’m going to tick that one off the list. And sadly there was no singing around a campfire either but I reckon dancing around the lounge to music videos counts. So all in all, a forest holiday to treasure for all of us. Ardgartan Argyll, Scotland, www.forestholidays.co.uk.

hat will the best dressed homes be wearing next year? Some of my favourite interiors bloggers share their insider’s guide to ahead-of-the-trend home decor. Read on for the colours, styles and patterns that will make your home dinner party ready in 2017 (spoiler: beige definitely doesn’t feature).

Buster + Punch Rockstar whisky bar

KATE WATSON-SMYTH Author of Shades of Grey and Mad About the House blog, www.madaboutthehouse.com “Given the seismic events of 2016 and the resulting uncertainty in the markets, I think there will be a return to the old ‘don’t move; improve’ adage, as people decide to stay in their homes and ride out any economic uncertainty. This usually heralds a period of bold ideas in interiors, as the bland beige that appeals to prospective buyers is dumped in favour of design decisions we want to live with.” Get The Look: Go bold in your home with edgy décor from Buster + Punch, such as their Rockstar Whisky Bar, £3,700, and graphite Hooked 1.0 wall light, £245 (both pictured left).

MOLLY FORBES Roost blog, www.roost-blog.com

“One theme I feel will be strong in 2017 is a return to nature. Bringing the outdoors in is nothing new but the influences will be taken from our love of the coast surrounding this fair island: think cool blues, greens, greys and pearl whites. Minerals like agate and marble will be used as accents throughout the home, while plants and botanical motifs will continue to be a big trend. Reflective surfaces such as glass, mirror and gold will add the sparkle.” Get The Look: MiaFleur’s marble and brass side table, £325, combines natural marble with a bit of bling, so you can nail two trends in one. Buy the brand’s copper planters (small, £24.99; large, £54.99) and bring botanicals into your home.

“A big trend I've noticed on Pinterest, and which I’m expecting to gain momentum, is the comeback of cork. I'm seeing it used to cover entire walls in stylish home office spaces, and as an alternative to the DIY blackboard feature walls that were so popular a couple of years ago. Used against a monochrome colour palette cork adds an extra layer of texture and interest which works really well in a room that needs to function as a practical working space.” Get The Look: This stylish cork and copper vase from Barnaby & Co, £29, is an easy way of working a touch of cork into your home, and would suit colourful décor as well as a monochrome scheme.

ABI COOKE Sofas & Stuff blog, www.sofasandstuff.com/blog FIONA REID Copperline blog, www.copperline.co “Personally, I’m not that keen on trends as such. They tend to encourage consumption of products, and the constant desire for new ‘things'; I prefer having fewer things and choosing well made pieces that will last. Handmade items made using traditional skills, and by smaller businesses, are things I really believe in.” Get The Look: These colourful Sahara storage pots by Yonder Living, from £34, are woven by hand by Berber tribes in the Sahara Desert and made from natural raffia stalks and dyed wool.

“While exotic colours and patterns have been a real success in 2016, 2017 will see the introduction of more natural shades, particularly pastel colours. Pastel colours have been a rising trend in 2016 and their popularity is set to continue into 2017. The pretty, tranquil atmosphere that pastels bring to interiors will ensure these shades’ success next year; we’re excited to see how these subtler colours will transform interiors in 2017.“ Get The Look: The Sofas & Stuff Fentbury large sofa in Barra Kashmir, £1666, creates a calming vibe; its soft, subtle hue works well with white and other neutrals. ANNA LYSIK Don’t Cramp My Style blog, www.dontcrampmystyle.co.uk

“We’ll see a move away from the darker greys in 2017 as people realise how much colour affects mood. For lovers of dark interiors they’ll be replaced by dirty teals, blues and greens and even burgundies, which can look just as dramatic, but are more upbeat. Browns will make a welcome comeback, bringing some much-needed warmth and life into homes. Think deep dark chocolate, right through to pale camels and tans. ” Get The Look: Farrow & Ball’s Tanner’s Brown (Estate Emulsion, £39.50 for 2.5L), with its warm red undertones, will bring that 2017 warmth into your home.

“In 2017 homes will embrace retro style with quirky coloured fabrics and oversized geometric patterns. We’ll see the leafy greens of old school plants combined with bold colours, ‘70s and ‘80s style. At recent exhibitions I’ve noticed young, up-and-coming designers are inspired by classic 1980s designs, instead of futuristic fashions. I think 2017 will also be the year where we’ll focus on sustainable, eco-friendly designs, designers and products like never before.” Get The Look: Use Paint by Conran’s vibrant range to create a geometric wall like this one, which uses Terracotta Pot, October Squash and Dandelion Puff to retro effect.

SPOTLIGHT ON… Almondine words Julia Byrce

T

he French have a popular saying, “mangez bien, riez souvent, aimez beaucoup” meaning eat well, laugh often, love abundantly - something I pursue on a regular basis. And so, it was only fitting I make a coffee date at Almondine, Aberdeen’s only French patisserie and coffee shop. A family run business established in 2011, Almondine is a popular hotspot best known for its artisan macarons and afternoon tea - booked up two months in advance, I might add. The venue seats 30 people comfortably and has a relaxed, friendly atmosphere making it easy to while away an afternoon. We initiated our visit with the customer’s top pick, a dark chocolate layered opera slice. This bittersweet dessert, with a creamy thin coffee layer, was light and fluffy. My knife fell neatly through each level, without ruining the individual layers. Top marks in any bake off.

84

Next up, the handmade macarons. Priced at £1.10 each, the flavours ranged from Chocolat Noir (dark chocolate) to the unusual, yet pleasantly surprising, Poivre Rose (pink peppercorn) and particularly fragrant Citron et Citron Vert (lemon and lime). The dark chocolate macaron was slightly bitter but the sweetness of the crispy outer macaron shell complemented the flavor perfectly. But my outright winner has to be the Pistache (pistachio) – absolutely outstanding. Almondine has done an excellent job offering something unique to Aberdeen, transporting you to a beautiful café in the heart of Paris. A must try for anyone with a sweet tooth. LUNCH @ JUSHI words Martel Maxwell

Nestled between trendy independent bars, florists and hairdressers in the ‘cultural quarter’ of Westport, Jushi is where juice meets sushi in Dundee. It’s also where dreams come true for owner Sasha who gave up a job he hated to set up this sparky venture. Together with Japanese super chef Mai, who was busy behind the counter on my visit, he has filled a gaping hole in the city’s market. I watched in wonder as Mai whipped up cucumber hosomaki, aubergine nigiri, asparagus, cucumber, tofu and red ginger futomaki and all manner of other creations. I opted for some of the above, along with avocado, tuna and salmon options, and a freshly made fruit juice which blended strawberries with kale, pineapple and replaced sorbet for orange juice. I chose individual

86

sushi, though the less expensive option is to pick up a pre-made box. The juice board offers even more variety, with a mango tango, blueberry blast, beeting heart (starring beetroot) and green light (avocado and fruits) among many more chalked on the blackboard. Sitting on a wall outside (there’s no seating area), I sampled my delicious goodies. The rice was soft, fish beautifully fresh, ingredients like shiitake mushroom and creamy avocado perfectly blended. I’ve heard locals say they can’t pass Jushi without popping in. Now, I’m one of them. Jushi 40 Westport, Dundee, DD1 5ER, Tel: 01382 205830 www.jushi.co.uk.

SHOPPER’S GUIDE TO… SWANKIE JO’S On the increasingly buzzy Exchange Street you’ll find Swankie Jo’s, a concept fashion and gift store. Kara Swankie designs much of her products - from art to go on T-shirts to quirky jewellery. Skull and crossbones are a theme, though unlike anything you may have seen - often beautifully feminine, encrusted with black diamond like stones. Look out for Swankie’s Banksy inspired collection of prints and unusual statement jewellery and small clothing range towards the end of the month. www.swankiejos.co.uk.

SEW GOOD Take sewing to a new level with Sewing Bee Lessons at Little Piñata Craft Studio on Brook Street, Broughty Ferry. Beginners or intermediates can sign up for three two-and-half hour sessions for £60 with all equipment provided. www.jollydressmaker.co.uk.

Life is a balancing act and so I reasoned the saintly (healthy Jushi) must be balanced with a little bad (well, naughty) and where better to try than the very place awarded Scottish Homemaking Outright Winner? I’ll cut to the chase: after ordering the carrot cake, I see why. The sponge was moist, icing creamy and the balance of sweet just right to entice intricate nutty and vanilla flavours to take a bow too. I have a confession. Just to check it wasn’t a one-off, I popped in the following week, this time choosing the Jaffa chocolate orange. The slice was just as generous and taste as wonderful, bursts of gooey orange mixing with the crumbling chocolatey sponge. But it’s not just the sweet treats that are worth shouting about here. There are also hearty lunches, with a specials board that varies from scones to curries and a welcoming, family friendly environment which is second to none. TALKING ABOUT St James Shopping Centre

So the centre looks rather, erm, empty – what’s going on? The St James Shopping Centre was built in the 1970s and was in need of TLC. When the developers behind Edinburgh St James (TH Real Estate) bought the site in 2006, they recognised the need for better shops and restaurants in the city and initiated the regeneration project. Will it soon close completely then? Yes, but John Lewis will stay open for the whole of the construction period – you’ll be able to access it from a new entrance on Leith Street. For those wishing to drive to John Lewis, the Q Park is still open too. Ok, sounds interesting. What will it be like? Edinburgh St James has been designed by Edinburgh-based Allan Murray Architects to ensure that the modern design sits stylishly within its UNESCO World Heritage surroundings. The building will be made out of solid masonry with a stunning four storey glazed galleria. It’ll be full of boutiques as well as bigger brands. When will the work be complete? Not for a while yet I’m afraid but it’s on track to complete in 2020.

BECAUSE YOU’RE WORTH IT… In need of some pampering? Book in at the new Cheynes at 39 Lothian Road. The salon offers everything from a cut and colour to High Definition Brows and manicures with a glass of fizz. There’s also a walk-in Blow Dry Bar for last minute pick me ups. For an appointment Tel: 0131 228 9977 or visit www.cheyneshairdressing.com.

DECADE BY DECADE There are certain hair styles that have the amazing ability to rekindle memories of years past. From the iconic 60s bob to the more experimental bleached crops, we’ve seen it all and continue to do so in all its glorious forms. And if you’re someone that prefers to compare and contrast, it’s all pretty well documented in the special commemorative Charlie Miller magazine. Created to mark Charlie Miller’s 50 years in business, it’s available in their Edinburgh salons and features everything from real life styles to runway glamour. it also reveals the story behind their inimitable creative vision that began in a gent’s hairdressing salon in Edinburgh in 1965 and turned into a highly successful business of education, innovation and creativity. Joint managing directors, Jason and Joshua Miller, unveil their top looks from the exciting journey through the decades.

2010

The ‘70s “The iconic bob, first unveiled in Paris over a century ago, was recreated by Charlie, our father, into an ‘S’ bob in the ‘70s and revealed at his first London industry hair show.” The ‘80s “An intense time of experimentation many styles in the ‘80s were influenced by the New Romantic vibe. Short haircuts and bleach crops became more popular.” The ‘90s “Following celebrities and their new looks and trends became commonplace in the ‘90s. The bob continued to be mimicked with Linda Evangelista, Courtney Love, Drew Barrymore and Gwyneth Paltrow all sporting their versions.” The ‘00s “The next decade saw massive growth in hair colouring with many cuts being created using layers and texture. Women stocked up on texturising creams, pomades and sprays to keep their look feminine and sexy.” 2010 “The enduring bob evolves in every decade with many women favouring the lob or the curly bob.”

LUNCH @ GRAMS What: A vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free café Price range: Hot Health boxes from £5.95 words Rebecca McCosh • photos Susie Lowe

I

t’s all too easy to slip into auto-pilot when it comes to eating at work. For me, without even realising, it had become a routine to grab a coffee and a croissant on the way to work while I was still half asleep, pick up a sandwich for lunch and mindlessly nibble on biscuits when they were doing the rounds in the office. Thankfully, a brand new café is putting a great deal of thought into making hassle free, healthy lunches, so you don’t have to. And when I say healthy, I mean the raw, vegan, dairy-free, glutenfree and refined sugar-free kind of healthy. Determined to start a new ‘eat clean’ regime, I headed along one lunchtime. I opted for a baked sweet potato with feta, seeds, spinach, sundried tomatoes and mint yoghurt plus healthy slaw and salad, £6.95. My dining partner chose the equally tasty and equally colourful chicken aioli – a plate stacked with shredded chicken, peppers, brown rice and broccoli served with a creamy (yet dairy-free, of course) garlic aioli sauce, sprouted seeds and healthy slaw, £6.95. Both dishes were filling and satisfying – not something I expected. If I’m completely honest, I thought I’d be left with a hankering for something meaty but that wasn’t the case.

Thanks to Grams’ clever substitution of refined sugar for brown rice syrup and pure maple syrup alternatives, dessert was firmly on the menu, and I’d put money on the raw Snickers, £3.25, and vanilla and fudge cheesecake, £4.25, fooling any sweet tooth. I’d definitely return for another baked sweet potato, or another helping of the chicken aioli. In fact, I’d happily grab anything on the menu. Which is handy as it means I can revert to autopilot style lunchtime eating... without the guilt. Grams, 16 Haymarket Terr, EH12 5JZ, Tel: 0131 337 3599, www.gramsedinburgh.com.

Combining art and craft, it’s named after the Leithborn sculptor and Father of Pop Art, Eduardo Paolozzi. Born in 1924 to Italian immigrant parents, Eduardo was inspired by cinema, advertising and the colourful packaging in his parents’ ice cream parlour, creating the first piece of Pop Art in 1947, I Was a Rich Man’s Plaything. Artworks from advertising and sculptures from scrap metal, Paolozzi worked to reveal the ‘sublime in the everyday’. Inspired by this idea of transforming ordinary objects, Edinburgh Beer Factory

DINNER @ NORN

What: A foraged fine foodie masterclass, Price range: Four courses from £40 words Dean Newton • photo Susie Lowe

I

f you’re the type to find public displays of affection nauseating, then it’s probably best that you look away now. I’d rather not give my hand away so early on but this will probably read more like an ode than a review and I’d prefer not to make anyone too uncomfortable. Norn lives on the site of one of Leith’s former Michelin-starred mainstays, The Plumed Horse. Inside, it’s relaxed and elegant with some midcentury Danish touches but the atmosphere and feel, thanks to the open kitchen, tones and lighting, is of being at a friend’s for dinner rather than a formality. This, like everything else at Norn, is very much deliberate and certainly by design. The menu offers limited options; four or seven courses, with or without drinks, starting at £40 for four and up to £125 for seven with paired drinks. Norn takes ingredient selection and seasonality

102

to the extreme, each course offered a foraged ingredient that would require some Google attention or description from the chefs – who serve and explain each dish in person. I’m afraid I only made it as far as the second course; sea trout with beetroot, orache (a salty foraged leaf) and raspberry, before transcending my human body and having to ask Sophie for some conversational quiet time from somewhere around the ceiling. I’d gladly spend the remaining pages of the magazine regaling the minutiae of each course (which I’ve mentally revisited regularly since) but the menu will have changed countless times by the time this goes to press. The words would do it no justice but rest assured, Michelin stardom awaits. Norn, 50-54 Henderson St, Edinburgh, EH6 6DE, www.nornrestaurant.com.

GLASGOW’S FRESHEST FOOD NEWS 104

Glasgow’s restaurant and bar scene shows no sign of slowing down with the latest addition to the dining scene being Hope Street’s Halloumi which offers ‘Mediterranean flavours with a Glasgow twist’, while the bar scene has recently embraced Rocky O’Sullivan and The Kelvin. The future’s looking just as tasty with Ibérica, the high-end Spanish tapas bar headed up by Michelin star chef Nacho Manzano (pictured above) opening its first Scottish restaurant at 140 St Vincent Street imminently. Sticking with a Latin theme, Fazenda, the burgeoning Brazilian rodizio restaurant chain, is considering an iconic Ingram Street site for its first venture north of the border. A little further off, but well worth the wait, is The Alchemist which is expected to conjure up its cocktail wizardry on Buchanan Street in late 2017. A stalwart of the Leeds and Manchester social scene, The Alchemist is more of an experience than a bar – think sophisticated cocktail laboratory with dry ice drama as standard.

Located in the increasing ‘cool’ enclave of Old Dumbarton Road, Tantrum Doughnuts offer, to our seasoned palates at least, the city’s best tasting handmade doughnuts in the most creative combinations too with pistachio and hibiscus, Black Forest gateau, almond old fashioned and a maple candied bacon and puffed pork crackling flavour on offer. The Write Stuff Tatyana Bugayeva

In our bid to introduce you to the best homegrown blogs, we meet Tatyana Bugayeva, the smart, switched on and stylish founder of Glasgow based lifestyle blog, LAFOTKA. Is blogging your career or hobby? A bit of both as it’s my passion, but it’s also a career that I work very hard on by creating professional content and helping brands reach out to my readers. Why did you start? I’ve always been a creative girl so just over three years ago I gave myself a project to see whether I could create something from nothing. Talking about my personal style and fashion freely with like-minded people is truly amazing. I’m also a mum so I wanted to inspire other mums and mums-to-be to remain true to their style. What’s your blog about? Fashion, health and other things I find worth sharing like travel, cool places, beauty finds, events and so on. I also like to talk about things many of us don’t like sharing like selfdevelopment or career obstacles so now and again you’ll find me getting ‘deep’ in my articles.

108

Are ‘numbers’ important to you? More followers mean more people like what I do and that’s great, but those numbers mainly help secure relationships with brands. For me, it’s the comments on my blog and on social media that really make me happy. Do you read other blogs? All the time. My current favourites are Happily Grey and Fashion Me Now and I love Pandora Sykes for some awesome style and controversial views on the industry. Visit Tatyana’s blog at www.lafotka.com.

A FINE CATCH There is more to Tailend on Market Street than a mere fish and chip shop and restaurant. A seafood lover’s dream, you’ll also find a counter laden with fresh fish to take home. We caught up with the manager, Jess Spink, to find out her seasonal tips on what to buy. “September is ideal for North Sea caught fish including hake, monkfish, lemon sole, catfish and hake. There should always be scallops and mussels too, but langoustines and oysters can be weather dependent,” she explains.

“For something simple to make at home, I love grilled hake with homemade pesto because it’s healthy, easy and tasty. You grill the hake in a tray with olive oil and seasoning. If there’s a skin, chargrill it first. For accompanying sundried tomato pesto, I use a NutriBullet and mix sundried tomatoes, red peppers, olive oil, salt and pepper, lemon juice and fresh herbs like coriander or basil.” www.thetailend.co.uk.

BIT AT THE BACK
