appy 2016! At i-on we’re using January to reinvent ourselves a little. Our 10th anniversary last year was a chance to look back and celebrate but now it’s the time to look ahead for i-on. We are delighted to announce that from the March issue (out 24 Feb) i-on will become a Scotland wide title, combining the Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen magazines. It will still be very much i-on as you know it with heaps of local news, views and what’s on but there will also be more from around the country to reflect the way we live and work in our cities. We are also relaunching our digital offering to give you more i-on when you want it - we have big plans so we’ll keep you in the loop. And so, in this last Edinburgh issue in its current format, we’ve packed a lot in to tide you over until we’re back with our shiny, new magazine. In this special January/February issue we indulge in the career break dream on page 26, we take a look at some of our favourite places to dine in our review retrospective on page 80. We travelled to the Faroe Islands for a Nordic adventure on page 66, and check out the buzz behind band-to-watch,

BABY STEPS Do you ever wonder what your baby is saying? Sarah Wheatley, a counsellor, mother of two, and the reassuring voice behind Baby Kind new-born observation sessions helps new parents ‘tune in’ to their babies’ cues and learn how much they already know. "Being more confident in your own abilities and knowing more about how your baby communicates are linked with your overall satisfaction as a parent and helping your baby create a secure attachment,” she explains. “Parents often don’t realise how well they know their baby, and having this knowledge gives them confidence in making their own way through the sea of parenting advice.” Sarah has appeared on the STV Fountainbridge Show and is also part of the Scottish Government PlayTalkRead campaign. Find out more about Baby Kind new-born observation sessions at www.birthandbeyond.org.uk.

Exactly how famous Glasgow quintet White get over the next 12 months – and they’re poised to do just that – will be gauged by just how easy it is to search for them online. That’s a nondescript name they’re carrying, and at the moment it barely registers when used on its own. Even if you add something a bit more specific, “White band from Scotland” for example, you’re more than likely to come back with a bunch of links to Dundonian funk icons the Average White Band. Signed to RCA and in possession of a handful of gorgeous, effervescent indie disco anthems, there’s plenty of room for the band to snatch some of the ground Franz Ferdinand used to occupy before they matured into the kind of group which goes collaborating with LA titans Sparks. At the moment White are a band which lives on industry buzz rather than a large dedicated following, but they’re a slow burn proposition based on the kind of enduring quality which can’t help but win people over.

music | 17

In November they won the Best Breakthrough award at the Nordoff Robbins Scotland Music Awards – although it might be jumping the gun to say their breakthrough has actually happened yet, the award is still a vote of confidence to show they have plenty of support at home. By the time you read this they’ll have (weather permitting) played a key slot in a very Scotheavy line-up at Edinburgh’s Hogmanay, and the national tour beginning in February will be their biggest yet. They’ve all been here before, to varying degrees. Singer Leo Condie, bearer of a sharp side parting and fine taste in dapper charity shop style, released a locally well received album with his band The Low Miffs in 2009, featuring Scots post punk royalty in Malcolm Ross (Josef K, Orange Juice, Aztec Camera). Hamish Fingland, Lewis Andrew and Chris Potter have all been signed before, when they were in energetic if meat-and-potatoes rockers Kassidy, now most famous for the fact their singer Barrie-James O’Neill used to date Lana Del Rey. Only drummer Kirstin Lynn comes without a significant public CV. The music they make transcends the sum of these previously revealed parts, although live and on record they do a thrilling job of condensing Condie’s strong taste for Scottish New Wave and post punk – the Associates, very early Simple Minds and the Postcard records stable all feature – with the ex-Kassidy trio’s reputation as fiery players. There are a couple of strong examples of their work out there already, with the tracks Future Pleasures and Blush proving to be hard to resist, dancefloorfriendly pop anthems with a streak of late night darkness shot through them. White play Electric Circus, Edinburgh, on Friday 19 February and QMU, Glasgow, on Saturday 20 February. For more information visit www.calledwhite.com.

alf Sri Lankan, half Scottish, Sean has worked in hospitality on and off since he was 18-years-old. Honing his skills at places like The Canny Mans, Le Monde and Amicus Apple, he joined the Montpelier Group nearly six years ago and is now the general manager of Brunstfield favourite, Montpeliers. Here he takes time out from the busy bar and restaurant to share his views on the city.

Where do you go for the best view of the city? Heriots Cricket Club Balcony – you can see it all; The Castle, Calton Hill, Arthur’s Seat and the Pentlands.

What gives Edinburgh its edge? It truly has everything, from every type of bar/restaurant you could imagine to a castle sitting high in the skyline on top of an extinct volcano.

Describe a great night out in Edinburgh: Drinks at Spit/Fire, dinner at The Raeburn and then a few night caps in Tigerlily.

The best place to go on a Sunday? Montpeliers for The Fully Monty; a full Scottish breakfast with steak and chicken, it’s the ultimate hangover cure.

The city’s downfall? The weather and the roadworks, they are insufferable. Your preferred areas in Edinburgh? The Shore, I love the variety of bars and fine dining restaurants it has to offer. And of course, Bruntsfield, with its boutique shops, delis and some of the best brunch places in town (cough cough, Montpeliers). Where in or around the city do you go for a quick escape? The golf course, it’s the best place to unwind. I’m a member of Duddingston and love it there.

he eponymous Liggy, owner of award-winning Liggy’s Cakes, is responsible for creating some of the tastiest cakes in town. From show-stopping designs to traditional bakes, her William Street boutique showcases her talents as well as offering cake consultations and tastings. When did you get into baking? I’ve always had a passion for baking, it was something we did a lot as a family. After graduating from St Andrews University, I noticed that cupcakes were becoming trendy and decided to start my own business. I began baking and selling from my parents’ kitchen and then with a little help from Prince’s Trust Youth Business Scotland and Business Gateway, my business really took off. Cupcakes or cakes, what’s your preference? Cake all the way. From a designer’s point of view, there are a lot more exciting and creative things you can do with a cake. We’re just about to open our third shop in the heart of Stockbridge where indulgent and delicious fresh layer cakes are going to be the main focus. You’re off work, where have you always wanted to try for food in Edinburgh? The Kitchin - I’m a big Scran and Scallie fan but have yet to try the restaurant. What’s your ultimate comfort food? My dad’s Sunday roast. It’s such a treat to go home at the weekends and have dinner cooked for me.

i-on Edinburgh 121 Jan16.indd 21

If you could invite five famous people, living or dead, to a dinner party who would they be? Nigella Lawson, I would quiz her on her best recipes and tips; John Lennon for some insightful conversation; Amy Schumer for the hilarity factor; George Clooney because I heard him speak at an event recently and thought he was interesting as well as charming and Rabbie Burns for some after dinner entertainment. DESIGN

Kate George photo ∙ Susie Lowe

Why did you choose graphic design? It is problemsolving through the use of type, space, image and colour. But one of the most important, and enjoyable, parts of the design process happens before you put pen to paper - listening to and interpreting what the client needs.

at Gifford Park in the Southside. The walls were a mess and local people were fearful about walking there. It’s incredible how the design transformed the area from somewhere people avoided into somewhere they embrace. Where do you look for inspiration? My studio is at ‘Out of the Blue’ at the Old Drill Hall where I am surrounded by other creatives and there are constant exhibitions and things going on. There is also a regular flea market where I find old photographs to use in my work or for inspiration.

How do you design? It is tempting to go straight to the computer but I always start with a paper and pencil because you can make quick strokes and not be seduced by predesigned fonts or digital effects. You are free to explore whatever is in your head.

Biggest design faux pas people make… Not using a graphic designer for their branding. These days people are used to such a high standard of design - from cereal boxes to toothpaste logos - so when it comes to ensuring your own branding stands out, don’t take any shortcuts.

What’s been your favourite piece/project of graphic design? I was commissioned to design a piece of public art

ounder of Box of Gorgeous, an online lingerie shop, Deborah was inspired by her passion for finding fashion-forward, larger cup bras. Last month she branched out to open her first boutique in Glasgow’s South Side and this month she talks to i-on about style. How do you pick your collections? It’s important for me to offer the complete lingerie drawer, from essential basics to something special. We like to choose comfortable materials with some added flirty ribbon or elegant lace detail in a mix of simple and vibrant colours. My favourite place to shop in Edinburgh is… Covet on Thistle Street. I used to work around the corner and would love a quick visit at lunch. I love the mix of designers and accessories.

i-on Edinburgh 121 Jan16.indd 25

My favourite recent find was… Affinitas & Parfait, I absolutely love their designs. The ‘Charlotte’ bra is ultraglam with a gorgeous mix of fabrics. Plus, it offers fabulous support up to an H cup. When it comes to style, I think it’s important to… wear the correct bra size. I’m a firm believer that wearing the correct size will uplift more than just your boobs. You’ll find your clothes fit better, you walk taller and feel proud of your shape. Shop the collections at Box of Gorgeous, 22 Skirving St, Glasgow, G41 3AA or visit www.boxofgorgeous.com.

Take a break ^

Does life sometimes feel like a never ending treadmill? With competing professional and personal priorities it can be hard to maintain perspective and create some space. But there may be a solution: taking a career break doesn’t have to mean career suicide. Cate Nelson-Shaw investigates.

A

few years ago I was pounding away on a similar treadmill, with my husband beside me. Our careers were going in the right direction, we had a lovely home and we made the most of our disposable income. But we didn’t enjoy much quality time together, just tired evenings and worn out weekends. Something had to change. Shortly after we were on holiday in Sutherland discussing plans for our future. And whilst looking over the white sands of Achmelvich Bay, we decided to resign from our jobs, sell our flat and spend a year travelling. By this time my husband and I had been together for 11 years and wanted to start a family, so we knew if we didn’t take this opportunity now it could be a long time before it arose again. And so at the age of 32 we began four extremely exciting months of planning. We bought Lonely Planet guides, looked at roughguides.com and talked to friends who had travelled for practical tips and

i-on Edinburgh 121 Jan16.indd 26

travel suggestions. Not having much of a plan was part of the appeal. Our parents thought we had lost the plot, our siblings and friends were good naturedly envious. We set off, first to Canada to ski, then back home for a quick change of belongings before boarding our flight to Delhi. This flight and the subsequent three nights’ accommodation were the only advance reservations we made, so the excitement of the unknown was terrific, if slightly daunting. Over the next six months (we compromised on the time length due to finances; and we didn’t sell our flat) we travelled from India through Asia visiting Malaysia, Cambodia, Hong Kong and China; onto Australia and New Zealand before heading to South Africa, Zambia, Botswana and Malawi. We were fortunate to be able to fund and enjoy such a long break, to spend the time travelling round the world and to do all of this at such short notice. But, truly it was the best thing we have ever

done despite the one minor altercation between us when we arrived in Delhi in the middle of the night to more people than I had ever seen in my life, heat and crazy Indian driving. We spent six months taking things slowly, enjoying each other’s company, exploring our ever changing surroundings, meeting up with family and friends, taking on new challenges, being resourceful, exploring my Malaysian heritage, volunteering in Malawi and all without mobile phones. When we returned we easily reconnected with Edinburgh: our flat was just as we had left it without having to worry about the aftermath of tenants, we both founds jobs more or less straight away and within nine months our oldest was on the way. And our careers? I can honestly say that the break we took to go travelling has never been an issue. Immediately upon our return potential employers were intrigued and wanted to know more, always with a touch of envy at what we had achieved. Subsequent employers and clients are much the same. In fact, recently I was talking to a client about her upcoming trip

to India and shared a few of my colourful Indian tales - she has now come to me with a similar, related project. You never can tell what turn a conversation might take. In other ways my own break has positively enhanced my career. We finished our travels by volunteering in Malawi for a month – I taught English to a class of 17-year-olds while my husband put his financial skills to use with local businesses. When we returned home we became members of the Scotland Malawi Partnership and when our eldest was one I approached the CEO offering to volunteer my professional expertise. As it happened the organisation was in the

Go for a walk without your phone. People need fresh air and gentle exercise. A short walk of up to 30 minutes, without the interference or potential interference of your phone, is a quick, simple and easy way to give yourself a boost that lasts throughout the day.

2

Stare out of the window. When your brain is free to drift off, look outside. It charges your thinking like re-charging a battery. Even a few minutes of day-dreaming whilst looking outward or upward can make a huge difference to a cluttered mind.

3

Bake, cook, sew, knit, whittle or carve. Engaging in an absorbing manual activity helps your body relax into a rhythm and your mind become fully engaged in that activity, allowing you to return to your daily routine with renewed vigour.

4 5

Stand up. Move around, make yourself a cuppa and change the scenery a little. It can be as good as rest as far as your stress levels are concerned. Breathe. Simply noticing your breath will help you calm down. Don’t change your breathing on purpose though, the act of noticing your breathing will soothe your fevered brow and it will slow down naturally to a rate that is appropriate for you. process of recruiting new board members and I was invited to join, so beginning my career as a non –executive director which has blossomed and in turn opened up other opportunities. So sometimes, all it takes is a moment to reflect and a dash of courage to take a break from the treadmill to create your own career break opportunity. I am not sure there is a right age, more of a right time and this will vary for different people. It might be to travel as we did, perhaps to volunteer, to take on a challenge and fundraise, or to set sail and work overseas. You may have an understanding employer who will let you take a sabbatical (I didn’t and my husband was keen to resign) which will provide some security for your return. But even if you don’t, as long as you can demonstrate your learning and achievements and apply them in a career context upon your return, what’s to stop you from booking that one way flight to Delhi? Be brave and go for it – one thing is for sure, you won’t regret it. Got your own story to tell? Keep the conversation going and share your experience using #ioncareerbreaks @ionedinburgh.

Edinburgh’s new wave

‘Designs on Football’ at 6 Yard Box, Edinburgh’s Brand New Concept Store

5452Edinburgh i-on I-On Magazine 121 Jan16.indd Advertisement 38 .indd 2-3

The finer side of football

Having previously launched the successful Football Nation stores in the city, Steven knew there was a gap in the market for a retailer celebrating the finer side of football. “We sell beautiful products inspired by the beautiful game,” he explains. “6 Yard Box is where football meets with style – creating a brand new concept in footballthemed retailing which will exploit a huge gap in the UK market.”

The store, the first of its kind in the UK, is the brainchild of local entrepreneur Steven Dow who has combined his long-standing passion for the game with high-end designer fashion and merchandising - with spectacular results.

“We are meeting a growing demand for ‘designer’ football – high quality fashions and products that are inspired by the beautiful game and are at the cutting-edge of design - but not linked to traditional club badges or merchandising.”

The ‘beautiful game’ has provided the inspiration for the latest independent trader opening at The Waverley Arches, Edinburgh’s most talked-about new retail and leisure destination. As its name suggests, ‘6 Yard Box’ is a shop dedicated to all things football – but it’s definitely not your typical high-street football experience.

18/12/2015 13:40

“We stock specialist designer brands sourced from niche global suppliers like Copa and Savile Rogue – providing everything from retro shirts to beautifully made cashmere scarves inspired by club colours.” “We also sell a range of quirky footballrelated merchandise from around the world – including Subbuteo branded kitchen merchandise, mugs, pictures, games and other memorabilia. 6 Yard Box is perfect for special gifts for football lovers which you can’t find on the high street.” Unique in-store experience The store environment will be different too. The Waverley Arches’ double-height arched ceiling and original brickwork provide a unique in-store experience which reflects the quirkiness and quality of the products. “The Waverley Arches is the perfect location,” adds Steven. “We want this to be a flagship store heralding more openings across the UK, and we couldn’t have launched anywhere else.”

i-on Edinburgh 121 Jan16.indd 39

“We are not a typical high-street product so we needed a location which defined what we do – edgy, independent and ground-breaking. The Waverley Arches provide all of that.” The Waverley Arches 6 Yard Box will be one of 15 new businesses operating from The Waverley Arches, a newly renovated row of historic Victorian arches on East Market Street – part of the £150 million New Waverley development in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town. New Waverley is set to become the place-to-be-seen in Edinburgh. Whitbread’s Premier Inn and new concept Hub by Premier Inn will open in February 2016. The development will also feature an Adagio aparthotel, offices and residential set around a public square and a range of diverse and exciting shops, restaurants and leisure concepts creating a vibrant new quarter for the city. the power of scent | 55

THE POWER OF SCENT words Sarah Howden

T

he power of scent is much more complex than sticking to a preferred note or two. The world of perfumery has traditionally revolved around fragrance families, but according to fashionable British perfumer, Azzi Glasser, who has launched a new limited edition fragrance collection at Harvey Nichols, it’s now all about personality and style – and a large dose of sensuality. “My fragrances are based on characters, personalities and styles rather than families,” explains the award-winning perfumer, who is the creative force behind some of the world’s most iconic scents and creates bespoke fragrances for Hollywood actors, musicians and artists.“People should see fragrance in a different way, it’s not about ingredients, fragrance notes or families – it’s about scents you identify with.” And so, fragrance buying has just got a whole lot more interesting with the Perfumer’s Story, 11 limited edition fragrances from Azzi’s back catalogue.

The strong line-up of original, alluring unisex scents are all character-driven. If you’re looking for a new signature scent or shopping for one for someone else look no further as The Perfumer’s Story is a fragrance game changer. Azzi’s love affair with fragrance started in India when she discovered the power of layering scents and how fragrances can evoke emotions, awaken memories and feelings. According to Azzi, the power of scent has a transformational effect on us. She explains: “Our tastes in scent definitely evolve as our tastes and experiences change. Life experiences change you, you mature and you become your experiences. Therefore, scent shouldn’t be about the ingredients, but about the character – who you are now. “The power of smell is the most powerful of all the senses. We’re animals and we are attracted to scent. You can manipulate your scent through fragrance and it changes how we feel. There’s no better feeling than someone complimenting you on how great you smell.” The Perfumer’s Story, £95 each at Harvey Nichols, 30-34 St Andrew Sq, EH2 2AD, Tel: 0131 524 8388, www.harveynichols.com.

Pick a fragrance through character and personality. Here’s how: Sequoia Wood: sensual, creative and edgy. C: magnetic, confident and edgy. Tuscan Suede: sophisticated, confident, sexy. GET FIT

January is the month when thousands of Scots resolve to get fit. If that sounds like you, the new promotion at Edinburgh Leisure might be the extra incentive you need. New members joining in January 2016 will get one month free, with the first direct debit coming out in March 2016. For more information visit www.edinburghleisure.co.uk.

DID YOU KNOW…? You’re just as likely to become dehydrated in the winter as you are in the summer. We’re usually diligent at ensuring we drink enough in warmer weather but the dry air of winter and 24/7 central heating can lead to dehydration too. Someone get the tea on.

HEATED DEBATE Contrary to popular opinion, you don’t lose most of your body heat through your head. The myth started after a 1950s army study when volunteers visited the Arctic, hatless and with their heads exposed. However, the study failed to consider the fact that as the rest of their bodies were completely covered, it was perfectly logical that they lost most of their heat through their uncovered heads.

i-on Edinburgh 121 Jan16.indd 63

POWER OF 10 Think you give it all you’ve got at the gym? Think again. A study at Edinburgh University found that when volunteers’ rest times were secretly reduced by 10 per cent, they were still able to push their bodies just as hard. Seems you actually can give 110 per cent.

TRIED AND TESTED CoolSculpting words · Amy Falconer

I

have to admit it, I was sceptical when I first heard about CoolSculpting – a procedure that uses controlled cooling to freeze and eliminate unwanted fat cells it sounded too good to be true. But I was also intrigued by its promise so I signed up to find out more at Face & Body Clinic in the West End. A non-surgical alternative to liposuction, CoolSculpting isn’t a weight-loss treatment but rather a sculpting procedure for those stubborn pockets of fat that no amount of diet and exercise will shift. It’s therefore great for flanks (fatty hips), underarms, double chins, man boobs and tummies. At my initial consultation I felt completely at ease with Dr Victoria Dobbie. She had a good prod around my problem area (flanks), listened to my concerns and then proceeded to take a series of photographs. And that was that; I was ready to be Coolsculpted. Each procedure takes an hour. The chosen area is sucked up into the head of the machine and frozen so that the fat cells die off, resulting in permanent fat loss on that area. I chose to spend my two hours wisely (one hour for each side) and relaxed whilst watching a box set of Sex in the

i-on Edinburgh 121 Jan16.indd 64

City, it was wonderful. The machine was fixed on to one side, then the other. Once both sides were complete, I was told to expect a slight numbness for four to five weeks and encouraged to massage the area twice a day to help move the fat cells into my blood stream, which I did. I had some faint bruises where the heads had been but that was it; no down time, I felt completely fine. The first follow up was a month later but you don’t see the full results until after three months. I have to say, I wasn’t entirely sure if I was imagining having a slimmer waist so I proceeded with caution to the final consultation so that I could see the photographic results for myself. Well, wow! I was honestly flabbergasted by the difference. They have managed to sculpt my waist into a much more feminine shape and I am delighted; it really does work. I think I may be hooked.

CoolSculpting costs from £700 at the award-winning Face & Body Clinic, 32 Alva St, EH2 4PY, Tel: 0131 226 9610, www.faceandbody.co.uk.

Comfortable. Clear. Convenient.

Comfortable, clear and removable Invisalign straightens teeth using a series of nearly invisible, removable aligners that are custom-made specifically for your teeth. ISLAND LIFE

BEAUTIFUL, UNSPOILT AND JUST A LITTLE BIT WILD, THE FAROE ISLANDS ARE THE PERFECT PLACE FOR A NORDIC ADVENTURE words 路 Melissa Jones

I

have to admit, prior to this trip, my only experience of the Faroe Islands came courtesy of the beautiful game. After all, it would be amiss to forget a team that Scotland has been drawn against in four consecutive European Championships, especially when our boys in blue have beaten them in six out of eight competitive matches. But less of my unsporting digression and more of my trip. Flying directly from Edinburgh with Atlantic Airways, I reached the Faroe Islands in just over an hour. Positioned in the middle of the North Atlantic, this cluster of 18 islands is a fiercely independent self-governing region of the Kingdom of Denmark and as the plane descended through thick clouds I was treated to views of large rocky mountains capped in snow, deep green valleys and blue waters. It’s safe to say the Faroe Islands took my breath away - and I hadn’t even landed. On my first night, I stayed in the postcard worthy village of Gjógv on the island of Eysturoy in a hotel with the tongue twisting name Gjáargarður. Hotel owner and host-with-the-most Eirik, treated my fellow travellers and I to a spread of rustic food, washed down with some beer brewed on-site at the hotel. Spontaneous entertainment followed with a demonstration of a Faroese chain dance by Eirik and his staff. After one of the most peaceful nights’ sleep I’ve ever had, I awoke the next day and set off with my trusty Bradt Travel Guide to explore the islands. To fully appreciate the islands, a hire car is a wise investment as there are many villages dotted across the islands well worth visiting. Access has been dramatically improved since the introduction of a series of sub-sea tunnels between the islands, which has cut two hour ferry rides to a mere 10 minutes of driving. From my base of Gjógv, I was whisked past waterfalls, grazing lambs and mountain passes with snow piled high on the roadside to Klaksvik on Borðoy to tackle a hike to the top of Klakkur. Offering stunning views of the surrounding islands, this is a must climb for bird watchers as it’s home to Oyster-atchers, Arctic Skuas, Snipes, Lesser Black-Backed Gulls, among others. After conquering the mountain, I moved on to Tórshavn, the Faroe Islands’ largest town. I stayed at Hotel Føroyar which boasts panoramic views down to the harbour. The hotel’s restaurant, KOKS, is billed as a fine dining restaurant which I’d describe as an

i-on Edinburgh 121 Jan16.indd 67

18/12/2015 13:40

68 | travel interesting experimental eating experience with a tasting menu including sea urchin, horse mussel and clams. If shellfish isn’t your thing, I’d heartily recommend Aarstova, a traditional Faroese restaurant at the harbour to sample the stunning leg of lamb. The following morning, I ventured out on a three hour hike from Tórshavn to Kirkjubø to visit the Patursson family who have lived on their farm Roykstovan for 17 generations. Their home dates back some 900 years and is one of the oldest surviving timber homes in the Faroe Islands. It’s easy to find as next door is the Mangus Cathedral, which is bidding for UNESCO World Heritage site status. Back in Tórshavn, I indulged in a little much needed retail therapy and headed to Guðrun & Guðrun. Enthusiasts of Scandinavian design will recognise this as the brand that made Sarah Lund’s famous knit jumpers from the TV series The Killing. The Faroe Islands are also home to a variety of independent clothing and jewellery designers, some of which can be found in the design store and café Østrøm, which I can safely say was my favourite find on my trip to the islands. The islands also have a thriving music scene with daily music events scheduled in the summer. For advice on who’s hot on the music scene, head to Tutl in downtown Tórshavn. This quirky music shop is also a record label for Faroese

artists and is responsible for talent such as Eivør, who has one of the most outstanding voices I have ever heard. My four days on the islands whizzed by in a blur of stunning scenery, changing weather and outdoor adventures. My Bradt Travel Guide proved an indispensable insight into getting the most out of my trip and I’ll definitely be holding on to it as now that I know the Faroe Islands are so close and offer more than a kick about, I’ll definitely be back to discover more.

ICONIC EDINBURGH

Advocate’s Close

words · David Hicks · photos · Susie Lowe

T

he great joy of the Old Town is in exploring its many medieval closes, and one of the best is Advocate’s Close, just off the High Street. It is a favourite photo stop for many tourists, offering a perfectly framed view through to the Scott Monument, but the really interesting things can be seen down the close. As you head down the close, look out for two carved stone door lintels on your right, with the date 1590. Don’t be fooled by these though, as the building was already at least 100 years old when those lintels were put in place. This is one of the oldest town houses in Edinburgh, dating back to around 1490 at least, known at the time as the ‘great

i-on Edinburgh 121 Jan16.indd 74

tenement’. In the 1500s it was renovated and extended by a wealthy merchant, Clement Corr, and it is his initials you can still see carved into the lintels today. On the left hand side is a tall, thin three-sided building, which is all that survives of a grand mansion built for Sir William Dick of Braid in 1630. Above the top floor windows on the end of the building there are inscriptions from ancient writers Horace and Ovid, giving a clue to the owner’s aspirations. The close takes its name from an old resident, Sir James Stewart of Goodtrees who was Lord Advocate from 1692 to 1713. However, there are many other characters associated

18/12/2015 13:41

iconic edinburgh | 75 with the close including Alexander Cant, a prosperous Edinburgh merchant who inherited the ‘great tenement’ in the close in the early 1500s. John Scougall, one of the earliest known Scottish portrait painters, lived at the foot of the close in the 1690s. He added an extra floor to his mansion, which allowed him to open an art gallery on the ground floor, an unusual feature for the time. For a while Advocate’s Close became the centre of the art world, with illustrious clients queueing up at his door. In 1750 there were 25 households occupying the main buildings in the close, but by 1871 there were over 100 families. In the ‘great tenement’, built for one merchant and his family, there were 97 people living in total. Soon afterwards much of the close was condemned, leaving behind just the medieval building. A brewery operated from there for a while, but the last known resident was one Mr R Scott who must have worked for the brass founders at the same address. Recently the close has been re-developed, breathing new life into its medieval and Victorian buildings. The development includes a new hotel, serviced apartments, offices and a bar. The remains of the ‘great tenement’ form

the impressive centrepiece of the development, meaning it is once again a residence, and its claim as one of Edinburgh’s oldest houses will continue. PORTION CONTROL

Put the excesses of the festive period behind you and get the New Year off to a healthy start with Alessi. Paolo Gerosa’s clever Voile spaghetti stainless steel holder is a great way to keep your portion sizes under control. £15.50 at www.alessi.com.

The method: 1. Melt the chocolate in an ovenproof bowl over a pan of simmering water on a low heat. When melted, remove from the heat and leave to cool. 2. Add the cream, yogurt and melted butter, and beat with a spatula or wooden spoon until smooth. 3. Stir in one tablespoon of desiccated coconut, the dried raspberry pieces, add a couple of drops of lemon oil for extra flavour and mix well. Cover the bowl with cling film and place in the fridge to set and chill overnight. 4. Once set take a heaped teaspoon of the mixture and roll into a ball between your palms. Next, roll each truffle in the coconut and place in a petit four case, then chill again. 5. Serve at room temperature. For more recipes visit www.rachelsorganic.co.uk.

DRINK TALK

Bars. Brands. Booze

RECOMMENDED Andrew Lundy, managing director at Vino Wines, unveils his selection of drinks to try this month.

GOOD VALUE Chateau Mayne-Vieil Fronsac, Bordeaux, 2010, £9.79 (when you buy six). Claret for under £10 is not an easy find but this wine stands out from the crowd. Silky and plummy, this 100 per cent Merlot is a sister to St Emilion at a fraction of the price. Great for warming up after a long walk on a Sunday afternoon.

CLASSIC Domaine Carneros Brut, California, 2011, £19.95. This is a real staff fave and a vintage fizz that delivers again and again. Perfect to have as an alternative to its sister wine Taittinger Champagne, it has fabulous bubbles and elegance in the glass with a soft pink hue from the Pinot Noir skin contact.

RISING STAR Grange Return of The Imperial Chocolate Orange Stout, Edinburgh, £3.95. Made out at Stewart Brewing with the team from Vino Grange Loan this 6.8 per cent Spiced Chocolate Orange Stout is refreshing and flavoursome. It has coconibs, cinnamon, orange zest and peel with cloves and nutmeg, it’s great with some after dinner blue cheese. To find your local Vino Wines Edinburgh visit www.vinowines.co.uk or Tel: 0131 452 8235. Free pick up and local delivery is also available.

DAYDREAM BELIEVER

OUR FAVOURITE FIND This award-winning reusable coffee cup not only looks fantastic but it can also be used to pay for your beverage. The Smart Cup from Frank Green adopts a proximity pay system called Cafépay which reads your cup in order to make secure, cashless payments. Better yet, it also has a thermo plastic outer layer to keep coffee hotter for longer. £14.99 at frankgreen.com and amazon.co.uk.

Head in the clouds? You’re not alone. A recent study from Synseal has revealed that the average Brit spends just over two hours per day lost in far-flung thoughts. Here are some of the other findings: The average Brit spends nearly six years of their life in a daydream. Winning the lottery, writing a book, telling the boss what you really think and a desire to travel are all listed within the 50 most common daydreams. More than half of those polled regularly fantasise about improving their home with 27 per cent admitting to spending time on estate agent websites looking at properties that exceed their budget. Six in 10 Brits said their daydreams genuinely make them happy.

DID YOU KNOW… That the average office worker will make over 158 million keystrokes in their lifetime? Further investigation found that women tend to type for 99 minutes per week more than men whereas blokes showed better average ‘words typed per minute’ results with 44 against the ladies’ 37. The record for fastest typing is a whopping 216 words per minute, set by Stella Pajunas way back in 1946.
