Celebrating Excellence in Interior Design
The annual awards program of the Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario (ARIDO) recognizes the exceptional work of qualified interior designers, while also raising public awareness of the power and effect of interior design among the Ontario public.
D
Interior design is more than aesthetics. The qualified Registered interior designer finds creative solutions for interior environments that enhance the quality of life of their occupants. The award winning projects showcased in this magazine demonstrate how the expertise of ARIDO members enhances the spaces where we live, work and play.
D
Projects can only qualify for judging where a Registered member of ARIDO was the lead interior designer on the project. Each entry is judged on its own merit by esteemed representatives from business, media and design. In their submissions, entrants are asked to relay existing design elements, budget and project objectives, strategies employed, overall creativity, examples of project results, and sustainability and collaborative elements. A panel of five judges selected 39 projects to receive awards of merit in 10 categories.
About ARIDO
2018 ARIDO Awards Judges
The Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario (ARIDO) is the only self-regulatory organization for interior designers in Ontario. Since its inception in 1934, the Association has played a vital role in the interior design industry by protecting the rights of the interior design profession and regulating the interior design profession in Ontario in the best interests of the public.
Tarisha Dolyniuk, ARIDO, OAA MJMA Andrew Gallici, ARIDO Gensler
ARIDO obtained Private legislation, Bill Pr6, in 1999 which grants Registered Members who meet ARIDO standards, exclusive use of the title Interior Designer in Ontario.
David Gibbons, ARIDO LWG Architectural Interiors Inc Nadia Kuhni, ARIDO Design Matrix Inc
By giving legal standing to the designation of Interior Designer, the government bestows on the title a measure of respect and recognizes the high standards of education, training and formal examination that professional interior designers meet. The act also safeguards consumers by ensuring that members are fully qualified and possess the most current qualifications. Any person in Ontario who is not a Registered member of ARIDO is guilty of an offense if he or she uses the designation Interior Designer or ARIDO.
Greg Quinn, ARIDO X-Design Inc.
The more than 1,100 Registered members of ARIDO have expertise in a wide range of sectors including corporate, residential, retail, hospitality, health care and institutional. In total, ARIDO has more than 3,000 Registered, Intern, Educator and Student members.

COUNTRY ESTATE
The construction of a 15,000 sq ft home for empty nester clients was a rare opportunity to create a refined, yet comfortable abode with a relaxed luxury. A staircase clad in marble block and slab makes a bold statement in the foyer and an abstract sculpture of falling leaves, commissioned by artist Dennis Lin ‘floats’ through the curving staircase, adding unexpected contemporary glamour. In the kitchen, the stained sycamore cabinets and quartzite countertops create the chef’s dream. Floor to ceiling windows offer stunning views of the lush back garden, while providing an abundance of natural light to the kitchen and family rooms. Vaulted and cove ceilings are intricately detailed throughout, accentuating the soaring heights. These communal zones are kept light with soft whites and greys and animated by pops of colour and beloved travel artifacts.

DESERT OASIS
Surrounded by mountains to the north, east and west, this private residence in Scottsdale, AZ, with southern views towards central Scottsdale and Phoenix beyond was one of the earliest built in the area. The client wanted to transform the existing structure and landscape into a contemporary desert oasis in keeping with stringent local architectural rules. A black and white colour palette throughout the 12,000 sq ft structure expresses contemporary luxury, along with design features that promote flow between indoor and outdoor, also respecting the realities of the extreme desert environment.

Altius Architecture, Inc. PHOTOGRAPHER:
Arnaud Marthouret, Revelateur Studio Architectural & Interiors Photography
On their tiny corner lot in Toronto, the client’s vision was a serene oasis that melded an urban and cozy cottage aesthetic. The open ground floor kitchen, dining and living rooms maintain a connection to passers-by on the street, and the custom grey-stained oak cabinetry wrap the entry and kitchen, hiding a powder room. The oak is also used on stairs and vanities, creating consistency. From the second floor, the home becomes a more private dwelling with a quiet family room and outdoor balcony, while the third-floor master suite provides a retreat from the city bustle. Stairs from the second floor balcony to the rooftop patio mean entertaining without disturbing the master suite.

Set on a shared 40-acre site, this family cabin project was restricted by several local bylaws on new buildings. A creative solution of erecting a cabin on the existing footprint of the building, conformed to the rules, while satisfying the client’s needs for new space. The exposed steel support was pre-built and delivered on site with building components, combining a post and beam structure with an energy efficient solution. South and west window walls meeting in the corner provided an unobstructed view of the lake and an abundance of natural light, while an east clerestory window provides cross-ventilation. The reclaimed oak that clads the building recalls its former life on a working farm and blends with the tree bark of the surrounding forest. The concrete floor hides a radiant heating system, while small bathroom fixtures and natural light give an illusion of more space overall.

RAVINE VIEW HOME
This existing 5,000 square foot home within a luxury condo building needed a complete renovation for a retired couple amid downsizing. For living, entertaining and private spaces, the design team created a rotunda to separate public spaces from private, moving key rooms to new locations. The kitchen, paneled in Mozambique wood veneer, now the hub for the home, was placed to best show off the stunning views from the floor to ceiling bow window, (formerly the dining room). The current dining room ceiling now has a gentle arch which conceals heating ducts, and panelling along the walls hides forty storage shelves. A palette of airy blues and greens with earthy caramels reflect the natural colours of the ravine view, while black accents throughout add depth and drama.

CARNABYS BESPOKE JEWELLERY
Located in Toronto’s Liberty Village, Carnabys is a jewellery boutique that offers unique collections, bespoke designs, and personal assistance to those who wish to design their own jewellery. The project extends the existing corporate branding, employing black as the predominant colour, while the overall design is intended to convey the refined, bespoke nature of the business. The space is both a jewellery boutique with display cases in a composition that allows multiple options for visual merchandising, and a design studio, featuring versatile cabinetry to delineate more intimate consultation spaces within a retail environment.

In renovating their office and showroom, HanStone Canada needed space to meet with clients and host events, while showing off their product in the 7,500 sq ft space. After gutting the existing ceiling, patinaed open web steel joists and a two-storey room were revealed, instigating further creative options. The team jettisoned a traditional reception area in favour of multiple inviting zones to resemble a home and double as entertaining space. The team highlighted HanStone’s luxurious products in the dramatic quartz fireplace surround, a cluster of stone cube end-tables, and the jumbo kitchen island, a centrepiece of the functional kitchen. Tucked away, is the awe-inspiring Slab Gallery featuring many HanStone slabs around the walls like pieces of modern art. Centred among the slabs is a sleek glass room, now the perfect setting for client meetings.

For outerwear brand Moose Knuckles, a desire to engage with customers beyond wholesale signaled their transition into proprietary retail. To exemplify the brand’s rebellious attitude, the client wanted to eschew ordinary retail features in favour of a showroom-meets-experience. The view into the store is purposefully obstructed by a form that cleverly disguises the cash point and change room. Products are displayed against a glowing backdrop, while limited edition pieces are exhibited in mirrored cabinets, opposite a cold-rolled steel wall. A floating raceway is covered in fur, hung by leather straps and showcases the collection, flanked by floating shelves with soft accessories. The juxtaposition of the manufactured versus organic polish accentuates the beauty of their products.

SAMSUNG EXPERIENCE STORE
In response to the rise of e-commerce, the client wanted a touch point for the brand, where visitors could experience its latest products, and educate the public about their system that links each device together, from tablets to TVs. The space extends this brand pillar, with every aspect of the design flowing harmoniously inside a 21,000 sq ft two-storey glass box. Softly lit swirls sweep across walls and ceilings, over a grand curvilinear staircase, a sculptural element that draws guests to the second floor. Grey, matte finishes create a muted background to the glowing tech on display. Products are highlighted with targeted lighting and white Corian surfaces, while realistic kitchen and living room zones invite engagement with the products on display.

BOOKING.COM
Regardless of their location, Booking.com’s offices incorporate a global, travel theme that pays homage to their country and home city. The eclectic Queen West area houses their new offices with a design that highlights the brand as a destination company with a strong local footprint. With a strict budget and timeline, the team leveraged spectacular views of Toronto, cleverly establishing a sense of place, without added cost. The building’s LEED raised floors, high ceilings, and existing lighting also minimized fit-out costs. Semi-enclosed areas subtly reference icons of Canadian design, with Hudson’s Bay blanket striping and meeting booths using TTC red upholstery. The space was designed to attract the desired workforce: diverse, multi-lingual, well-travelled and hip; also, a true reflection of their customers.

CIFAR needed a tailored, activity-based solution for their new open work environment to increase discussions and collaboration. Access to research material, maximizing natural light, and allowing for changes in technology were also identified as priorities. The design team developed their concept around the clean open shell of the MaRS office space with three sides of 13 ft tall exterior glazing, dotting open concept lounges around the perimeter. At the centre of the space, the team placed a cafĂŠ with various seating options and pantry storage, as a vital collaboration hub.

An unexpected issue with their lease resulted in Colliers International moving from their Toronto office, on a tight timeline and budget. Unable to duplicate the past layout, Colliers engaged the design team to create a flexible, non-hierarchal environment. Full sliding glass fronts and side panels along with clerestory glazing ensured natural light throughout the floor. Additional flexibility was introduced with a variety of furniture solutions; varying heights of meeting tables and lounge seating, and continued with new workstations with lowered panels, sit-stand desking, and new computer technology for staff. The lunchroom’s hard surfaces warranted additional sound control which was introduced in large acoustical panels displaying Colliers corporate values.

GWL RA
GWL RA, which was looking to consolidate three offices into one at their new 10 Yonge Street location, determined that communication, openness and transparency were the main goals of the project. The design team retained access to the building’s atrium and skylight to preserve sight lines and sound of the water feature below, while upholding GWL RA’s role as the landlord of the building. The reception, conference room and lunchroom promote contact among teams, while workspaces are now flexible with careful consideration to acoustics. Nature inspired carpeting, wood and moss support the overall theme. The approach is natural and youthful in this building that continues to celebrate the community and the individual.

LOYALTYONE
To remain at the cutting edge of the marketing industry, LoyaltyOne established Innovation Centre, creating a space for working beyond traditional creative barriers. To merge a traditional office with a client focused space, the design team created a ‘permeable zone’ that supports employees and clients working together in a co-creation model. A stadium stair on the first floor becomes a focal point, while demarcating the permeable zone, and the fully secured back-of-house. Work settings were designed with employee comfort in mind: access to daylight, adjustable room settings for AV viewing, and sound absorbing materials. The expansive space feels warm and welcoming due to clean proportions, materiality and furnishings, and has led to a wealth of new opportunities for the client.

A media company client desired an update to their workspace, including two radio studios, an agile workspace and an employee cafĂŠ/ lounge for greater connectivity among employees. The space was reconfigured to a diagonal floorplan for easy circulation and the 24-hour workday of the client. A new staircase becomes a focal point, connecting the ground and second floor, while displaying radio memorabilia. With an acoustic operable wall and modular furniture, the lounge transforms to a performance space. The two public-facing studios no longer seclude radio talent, with tinted windows to offer privacy, while an isolated raised floor and window treatments protect against noise from the street. The purpose of the space is echoed throughout the radio wave motifs and copper accents recalling radio batteries, creating one of the most technologically advanced radio spaces in Canada.

OMERS had a clear goal with their project: Place 1,500 employees in a 380,000 sq ft space, while delivering value for pension dollars and sustain their dedicated service. Four principles of focus, connection, collaboration, and engagement guided the transition from the individual business unit culture to a collective high-performance culture. With the reduction of offices, privacy concerns were addressed through a variety of acoustics and focused work settings. The narrow floor plate was mitigated by shifting built space against busy entry points, reducing distraction in the open workspace. Wellness strategies are supported by shared meeting rooms and sunny refresh zones on each end of the floor. All three floors are connected by a centralized reception and internal staircase, which also provides an access point to all client facing meeting rooms.

PRIVATE PENSION FIRM
Pioneers in investing, the client wanted a new approach to their workspace that would empower innovation and organisational excellence, while upholding their formal corporate environment. To maintain employee agency in conducting their work day, the designers created 20 varieties of spaces for working, with plug and play connections that would also foster movement throughout the day. Custom walnut cabinets provide a space for belongings, while copper accents in mirrors and cabinetry add interest in a refined manner. Accent carpets soften the atmosphere, while darker tones and natural materials add a luxe element to the aesthetic.

SUN LIFE – IGNITE STUDIO
Ignite Studio is Sun Life Financials’ first location for agile project delivery in Toronto. Run by the Digital Solutions Practice, the space needed a collaborative atmosphere for teams to innovate and launch new tech solutions quickly. A variety of workspaces, from project rooms to open collaboration space fosters a sense of community, one of Sun Life’s goals for the space. Instead of a reception area, guests are greeted by the Resource Hub, a large millwork element that hosts a ‘Digital Welcome Wall’ which features tablets boasting the latest Sun Life software developments. Brand colours have been used boldly throughout the space in various materials and textures, while social spaces next to windows show off the incredible views of Lake Ontario.

In their home for every brand, Flight Centre wanted a multi-functional space including a retail store, new offices, and signature event space. The design team retained the integrity of the 100+ year old heritage post and beam space, while creating eye-catching interiors that would draw foot traffic. Upon entering, the dramatic board room, an angled, modern, black box knits the retail, event space, and workplace. On the lower floor, workspace for various teams is clustered around the central kitchen with clean white walls to brighten the below grade space. The upper level’s event space features a map room, library, and large kitchenette with a bar.

Owner and operator of the TSX and a titan of the Canadian financial community, the client needed to combine three locations in their new Adelaide headquarters in an open agile environment. The design team exposed the concrete deck, burying future conduit pathways in the slab. Redesigning the duct system with oval spiral ducts added a modern aesthetic, standing out from other tenants and diverting material from landfill. Adding communal gathering spaces of the café with indoor/outdoor patio, encourages teams to support each other to achieve goals, and has become a site for collaboration and exchange far beyond expectations.

MARNIE’S STUDIO, SICKKIDS
Marnie’s Studio at SickKids Hospital transformed the 2,900 sq ft Bear Theatre into a multi-purpose space with a media centre, recording studio, stage, and art making space. The client and children had a clean and contemporary space in mind – light-filled, wheelchair accessible and flexible for kids from 4 to 18. The team preserved the room’s layout and ceiling grid with an integrated HVAC system, while existing walls, doors, and window frames were repainted. Custom vinyl graphics, floor patterns and magnetic, writable glass panels were added to brighten the white walls and light wood-look flooring. The designers installed a sliding door in collaboration with artisans in Senegal who used scraps of colorful fabrics embedded into resin. The overall result is a sophisticated, multi-functional space which provides a place for creative expression for kids of all ages.

SICKKIDS WAV PLAYPARK
SickKids Hospital engaged the design team to renovate the ground level WAV PlayPark with footprint of 1,250 sq ft for accessibility, safety, and security in the limited space. The new layout established zones for activities in familiar landscape features like lake, meadow, and cave with uninterrupted views throughout the entire space for interconnectivity, and safety. A backlit screen provides the illusion of a view to greenery, while disguising an existing glass block wall that had to remain. Books, toys, art supplies and more are organized underneath benches with cozy cushions. Custom art and graphics by a local artist further enliven the space, making it truly unique to the SickKids experience.

Situated on Dubai’s Waterfront, the Etihad Museum honours the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) conception story. The pavilion and museum become a site rich in symbolism, from the pavilion’s entrance, featuring bronze text of the nation’s founding philosophy. Support columns embossed in bronze represent the angle of pens in motion, referencing the signatory act of the Emirati unification. A grand staircase and ramp invite visitors below grade, echoing the flowing lines of Arabic script. This is further highlighted by billowing white ceiling planes, recalling rippling patterns of wind on desert sand. The layout maximizes natural light in classrooms, offices, prayer rooms and the café, while exhibition spaces, theatre, and archival facilities are situated underground.

Surrounded by an ecological band of wetlands, Niagara College wanted their Niagara-on-the-Lake student centre to match the environmental and horticulture programs of the campus in a welcoming, flexible gathering place. A common space and enhanced cafeteria were placed on the ground floor, with administration space and student services on the second floor. Previously a cavernous space, the gym is now a collection of zones for eating, socializing, and studying, and can transform to multipurpose space for events. The understated palette of white Corian, ceramic tile, and paint is offset by warm, maple accents, while the double height ceiling was lowered by an acoustic aluminium slat system that dampens sounds, holds LED strip lighting and preserves the existing HVAC system.

FUTURE OF CANADIAN LIVING EXHIBIT
An invitation from a supplier set off this trade show experiment, featuring the cabinetry and materials of two exhibitors, while showing off the firm’s talents. Experts in small space design, the team imagined an idea of vertical communities for the 20-by-20 sq ft space. From the ground floor rose a kitchen, a bathroom, and a library, with Cleaf laminate on the walls and countertop creating an illusion of real wood, while the floor was covered with Sintra plastic wall-paneling custom printed with a wintery landscape. The designer’s ingenuity garnered the ‘best booth’ award and set off a buzz of interest from other trade shows.

PICASSO ON RICHMOND
For this trendy new condo at the epicentre of Toronto’s entertainment district, the client wanted the interior of the 39-storey tower to have a club-like vibe to attract a younger target market. Upon entry, the concierge area transitions into a narrow lobby with blacktinted mirrors to open the space. While waiting for an elevator, guests can admire the LED acrylic chandelier, above the porcelain floor tiles. Amenities on the 3rd and 10th floors of a gym, billiard room, private dining room and party room extend the sophisticated vibe, with styling that recalls a night club replete with bed-like loungers and a custom light fixture. The party atmosphere continues outdoors with a folding floor-to-ceiling window that opens to a sleek black steel double-sided fireplace, cabanas and hot tub.

For their 13-storey, 159 unit condo, the client wanted the feel of a boutique hotel to attract style-savvy buyers in Toronto’s downtown East. The design team’s clean lines and neutral palette achieve a modern, yet sophisticated vibe, supported by natural stone and eclectic lighting. The concierge desk features hexagon mosaic tiles under a wash of concealed light, giving the illusion of sparkling gems. In the second-floor party room, the design team fit a lounge, private dining room and television room, demarcated by foldable walls. Each space can be closed off to accommodate private events; or opened when walls are folded back. Artwork from local artists was commissioned for public spaces to give back to the community.

Andaz by Hyatt Hotels selected the vibrant ByWard Market neighbourhood in Ottawa as their first location in Canada. The owner of this 200-guestroom boutique hotel had a cohesive vision: to provide a refined and casual atmosphere while connecting guests to the community and expose travelers to the best of Canadian design and culture. The lounge features a ceiling light-installation by an Ontario designer using six wood species from the region, while check-in podiums hold stone carvings from the Canada Council Art Bank. Rooms and suites boast upholstered furniture from Ontario-based designers and are finished in a mixture of natural oak wood, with copper accents, a nod to the coppertopped parliament buildings in view.

For their 45-room resort venture, the clients envisioned the modernity of California beach houses with British eclecticism. Allowing the cliffside topography, climate, and budget to dictate the strategy, the client’s personal preferences of roomy bathrooms, luxurious bedrooms, and exterior sitting areas guided the details. The design team addressed the long-term life of the resort by sourcing durable finishes and moisture-resistant millwork, incorporating hurricane shutters and awnings for emergency lock down. Tasteful beachy elements were added: nautical lamps, alongside wicker and teak furniture, keeping the focus on the breathtaking ocean views.

With the base building already constructed, mechanical, electrical and plumbing of suites already laid, the design team had free rein to propose a fresh update to the client’s room standards. As each suite demanded custom measurements, the design team simplified the millwork to a modular kit that could be tailored to each layout. Lighting is built directly into the millwork, while natural light beams into the washroom via a frosted glass corner while maintaining privacy. By extending the desk to a long counter for suitcase storage, and eschewing typical closets for an open shelving system, the key pieces of a hotel room are redefined in a modern way.

THE BROADVIEW HOTEL
This iconic landmark in Toronto’s East End was transformed into a chic 58-room boutique hotel including a restaurant, café, an indoor/outdoor event space, and a rooftop bar. Honouring its past as a factory, boarding house and then “Jilly’s” – an infamous seedy nightclub, the design team mixed styles and periods to create an eclectic aesthetic. With furniture and lighting by Canadian designers including Coolican & Company, Anony, and art from a local curator, the space becomes a pastiche of style, time and place. The airy ground-floor café invites guests to sink into leather banquettes or gather at the white marble and brass bar under a halo of pink neon – an installation by the son of the creator of the original Jilly’s sign.

Atop the Andaz ByWard Market Hotel, the client wanted Copper Spirits & Sights to serve hotel guests and locals. It was essential for the restaurant to pay homage to the beautiful and unique contributions of Canada’s capital city. The atmosphere is bright and funky, from the exaggerated neon sign canopy, to the oval-shaped concrete and metal bar, to the graffiti tags and edgy art on the walls, lit by mis-matched, bespoke lighting. The team incorporated original Terminal finishes, including the terrazzo floor, and revealed hidden columns, walls and bulkheads. Custom millwork was constructed from reclaimed wood and metal. This 70-seat Nando’s location is a celebration of South African colour and craft on Queen Street East. The design for Picnic Food’s first street-front shop had to reference previous iterations, in subterranean concourses, in a refreshed experience. With more expansion in mind, an adaptable design needed features that would be both easily replicable as well as physically identifiable as key symbols of the brand experience. Repeated linear woven wood textures recall textiles commonly associated with picnics and become an iconic design element for future locations. The communal dining table returns on a trestle base, while the lime and watermelon brand colours are present via greenery in terracotta pots.

VICTOR RESTAURANT
Situated in a bustling area, Hotel Le Germain Mercer Street wanted to attract more clients for morning coffee, business lunches, and late-night dining to their restaurant Victor. Without a connection to the street, the venue rarely drew in foot traffic. The design team created a dining area with leather banquettes, an intimate bar-lounge, and a café which is sympathetic to the hotel’s lobby. A dramatic light installation of brass tubing and white globes snakes above diners and is visible from the street, drawing in passersby. It glows in contrast to the gravel-grey ceiling, lowered to a more intimate level. Brass touches in the bar also recall the chandelier, while decorative crystal, flatware, bronze and gilt chargers add interest along the walls. The white marble counters and fluted barista station of the café heighten luminosity, contrasting with playful patterned tiling in the floor.

The restoration of an 1862 Georgian stone farmhouse and designated heritage building provided a design opportunity after it was destroyed by fire in 2013. The client, a classical pianist, hoped to retain the original character of the farmhouse, and create a large space for concerts and to display two grand pianos and her collection of musical instruments. The design team reimagined the layout, building a two-storey great room as a concert hall and formal living room. The original stone walls were restored with a new vaulted roof of spruce scissor trusses, clad with microlam beams and contrasting black metal struts. The stone walls and wood floor absorb sound, while the irregular shape of the exposed ceiling minimizes echoes, resulting in a harmonious concert space.

Combining materials, design, and engineering, the Aaron dining table boasts a stunning minimalist silhouette. A dear client of the designers was searching for a new dining table that would stand the test of time, both in materials and design. As art collectors and consultants, the clients wanted something edgy and sleek, striking a balance between elegant and provocative. A V-shaped channel of bronze on the surface gleams warmly against the quartzite stone, integrating these two materials harmoniously. The perfect balance of material, texture and design, ensures the Aaron table will become a cherished heirloom for generations to come.
