Message from the President

Welcome to the 2024 ARIDO Awards Gala! It is with great pride and excitement that we gather once again to celebrate the extraordinary talent and innovation within our interior design community. This year’s theme, A Night Under the Ocean: Celebrating Design Excellence in the Depths, is a powerful metaphor for the profound dedication, creativity, and expertise that define our industry.

The ocean, with its mysterious and captivating depths, serves as the perfect inspiration for our celebration. It symbolizes the vastness of imagination and the uncharted territories that interior designers explore to bring visionary concepts to life. Just as the ocean invites us to discover its secrets, so too does interior design challenge us to push the boundaries of creativity and innovation. Our work, like the ocean’s depths, is rich with layers of meaning, purpose, and artistry.

This year, we’re embracing a significant change in our awards process. For the first time, our finalists are in the spotlight, with the winners to be revealed in a grand moment during the gala. This shift not only builds anticipation but also underscores the diversity, adaptation, and resilience that our designers demonstrate with every project. With 34 outstanding finalist projects across eight categories we celebrate the breadth of talent that defines our profession.

We are once again excited to return to an in-person format, allowing us to connect, share, and celebrate in a more personal and meaningful way. As we enter the fourth year of our evolved Awards format, we continue to advance our commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

I would like to extend our deepest gratitude to our partners and sponsors, especially those who have been with us through the years. Your unwavering support has been instrumental in making the ARIDO Awards a success, and we are honoured to have you with us as we celebrate this milestone.

As we dive into the depths of this year’s theme, let us be inspired by the ocean’s mysteries and the infinite possibilities that lie within our own creativity. Here’s to celebrating design excellence in the depths!

Thank you

1934-2024

For nearly a century, ARIDO has been at the heart of Ontario’s interior design community, guiding the profession from its earliest days to the influential and respected organization it is today. It all began in 1933 when a small group of pioneering designers sat around a table, envisioning a future where they could foster growth, collaboration, and opportunity. That vision led to the formation of the Society of Interior Decorators of Ontario in 1934, which later evolved into the Interior Designers of Ontario.

A major milestone came in 1984 when the Ontario Legislature passed the ARIDO Act, officially establishing the Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario (ARIDO). This act, further strengthened by Bill Pr6 in 1999, grants exclusive rights to the title “Interior Designer” to ARIDO’s Registered Members, ensuring that only those who meet the association’s rigorous educational and professional standards may use the designation.

By elevating the title of Interior Designer to a legally recognized profession, ARIDO has helped establish the credibility and trust that clients can expect when working with a qualified professional. It is illegal for anyone in Ontario who is not a Registered Member of ARIDO to claim this title, ensuring that the public can have full confidence in the knowledge, expertise, and ethical standards of its members.

As ARIDO celebrates its 90th anniversary this year, its legacy is not only one of regulatory leadership but also of fostering a thriving, innovative design community. With over 25 events and activities every single year, spanning the province, ARIDO continuously strengthens its relationships with members, industry partners, and the wider design community, all while promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion.

This milestone anniversary is a testament to the unwavering commitment of ARIDO’s members and partners. Together, the association has built a legacy of design excellence that has not only shaped the profession but also protected public safety for generations. ARIDO invites the design community to continue standing alongside it in upholding these high standards, credentials, and the pursuit of design excellence for the next 90 years and beyond!

The space celebrates the art of storytelling by offering an unparalleled multi-sensory journey. Features include 2000+ m2 of intricately lit, custom whimsical murals framed by a custom Victorian greenhouse, a tent-draped mezzanine and a two-story mirror installation. The basement, in stark contrast to aboveground, showcases a cave dining experience, dimly lit by a custom meandering miner-inspired light feature.

The challenge was to transport the guest to a world beyond their expectations despite its urban location. Other challenges were to create a cave below grade while addressing mechanical needs with low ceiling conditions and ensure authenticity and harmonizing the ground floor and mezzanine while preserving their unique traits and making the vast space feel intimate.

The outcome of this space is a seamlessly merged series of strong design elements: floor to ceiling murals; feature bar; vintage lounge; tented ceiling; custom furniture and lighting; and a subterranean cave. Each detail contributes to an immersive journey, urging guests to discover unique stories. The design’s thoughtfulness shines in the play of light, texture, and reflective surfaces on every level.

PROJECT SCOTIABANK NORTH CONCOURSE LOUNGE

INTERIOR DESIGNER:

Colleen Baldwin, ARIDO

DESIGN FIRM:

Scotiabank Canadian Retail Design Team

LOCATION: Toronto, Ontario

OCCUPANCY DATE: October, 2023

SQUARE FOOTAGE: 1,200 sf

PHOTOGRAPHER: Ludwing Duarte

The project is located at the Concourse Level of the new Scotiabank North Tower of the Bay & Adelaide Centre in downtown Toronto’s PATH network. The purpose of the space was to provide a customer retail experience, while maintaining a notable Scotiabank Retail Brand presence within the PATH. The ideation starts by discarding any preconceived notions of what a standard retail banking experience is, while instead prioritizing how a space can best benefit occupants within its context. While using an architectural concept as a means to reengage the public in a retail setting, the result was a space developed to be a quiet ephemeral respite in contrast to the PATH’s otherwise busy, fast-paced retail corridors. Conceptually, this is achieved by eroding a pedestrian path through a red retail mass exposing an occupiable space of organic, undulating wood striations akin to natural cave formations seen in nature.

PROJECT 1001 ROBERT-BOURASSA

INTERIOR DESIGNER: Annie Bergeron, ARIDO

DESIGN FIRM: Gensler

LOCATION: Montreal, Québec

OCCUPANCY DATE: January, 2024

SQUARE FOOTAGE: 172,545 sf

PHOTOGRAPHER: Adrien Williams

At its heart, 1001 Robert-Bourassa is designed to bring people together. Formerly a conventional and non-descript lobby, Gensler’s design expands and transforms the space into an immersive destination, capable of functioning as an event venue for up to 300 people, and of fostering community, wellness, and collaboration.

To encourage human interaction and reflect the spirit of the city, tiered seating—inspired by the topography of Mount Royal—beckons visitors to scale the “mountain” for a moment of reprieve, to meet a friend or work colleague, and to experience the space from an elevated vantage point. To transport visitors to “not just another lobby,” Gensler collaborated with Moment Factory to layer into the design a series of multimedia features including a large LED digital wall, spatialized soundscapes and bubbleclustered chandeliers, that inspire feelings of wellness and wonder.

This luxury modernist home was once a mundane suburban bungalow. The clients had a strong vision of a mid-century to contemporary motif. The spacious main entry area sets the tone for the entire home as high ceilings and rooflines give the space an open, airy and uncluttered feel.

On this main level, the communal living spaces of living room, dining area and kitchen form the central element. The principal bedroom suite set to one side and a separate wing housing the children’s and guest bedrooms to the other subtly ensure privacy without interrupting the flow of space, movement and light.

On the lower level, entertainment areas include a home theatre room, a guest bedroom, gym, and spa washroom with steam room, all centred around the outdoor pool, jacuzzi and cabana. An additional closed-off suite with its own kitchen and lounge area encompasses the needs of the clients’ multi-generational family

Replacing the old family cottage, this new build was fashioned to reflect the couple’s changing needs. Set in the tranquility of Lake Couchiching, the low-slung architectural form with its intersecting roof pitches and expansive glazing provided the perfect starting point to create something modern and warm with a playfulness well-suited to its owners. Designed as a primary residence, as well as an escape destination for family and friends, the restrained detailing in the form of walnut slatted partitions, wood-clad ceilings and the expanses of a clean white envelope, all provide a nod to the architect’s vision and allowed the interior designers to animate the spaces with eclectic combinations of colours, textures and personal artifacts which speak to the client’s unpretentious passion for a life well lived.

In the Eglinton Loft project, the building was home to offices and was converted in the early 2000s giving a very spacious layout and 11-foot ceilings to play with. The designers completely renovated and reconfigured the kitchen appliance locations to create a more functional flow. The client had a bold vision for an all-black kitchen which we balanced with a white island. A large yellow sectional was the perfect choice for this project to balance against the kitchen. Black metal was chosen to work with the loft feel and was incorporated in the many legs of the furniture and accent pieces such as drink tables, side tables and chairs. A custom window and door system was designed to bring as much natural light into the den as possible and incorporate the industrial aesthetic with custom-designed shelves that house the client’s extensive book collection.

OCCUPANCY DATE: May, 2022

SQUARE FOOTAGE: 7,360 sf

The concept for this modern, comfortable family home started with the clients’ desire for warmth, natural light and an uncluttered environment. The home is designed to age in place, contributing to make the generational journey a smooth transition.

The teardown-and-rebuild project opts for an open concept in the main floor living areas. As the original house had many subdivided rooms — too many of which felt like they were barely in use — the open concept successfully subverts expectations and ensures all available space is aesthetically and practically utilized. Its lived-in and relaxed feel encompasses both family living and fuss-free entertaining. Great attention was given to details like texture, colour and upholstery, which delineate spaces while preserving seamless connections. The designer prioritized balance and proportion, creating a calm, serene environment. For example, millwork elements were carefully coordinated for providing full functionality without compromising on symmetry, contributing to a restful composition.

LOCATION: Prince Edward County, Ontario

OCCUPANCY DATE: September, 2023

SQUARE FOOTAGE: 4,000 sf

PHOTOGRAPHER: Erik Rotter

To escape the hustle and bustle of their high-pressured city lives, the clients selected a property in Prince Edward County in order to create a serene easy living environment to escape to. With views of the water and surrounded by trees, the design intent was to create as many connections to the natural surroundings as possible. Separate wings surrounding a central core great room were used to create a private yet connected feeling throughout the home. Single level living was a prime focus when developing the layout with as many oversized windows as possible to bring the beauty of nature inside. Similar decisions were made when selecting the finishes for both the exterior and interior of the home. A vein of continuity runs throughout with finishes that take inspiration from the warmth and texture of its surroundings while staying true to the client’s clean modern aesthetic.

The project is a full renovation of an 1890 Victorian semi-detached singlefamily dwelling in the west end of Toronto. The house was layered with several modifications over its 130-year history and had most recently sustained damage due to a small fire. The interior was peeled away to the exterior load bearing masonry walls, and a reconfigured set of contemporary spaces tailored for a married couple with two active young boys was layered within this existing envelope. The interior demolition uncovered many hidden spaces and opportunities to reshape the volume and recover space within the building shell. The project intertwines historical artifacts, contemporary interpretations of the past, with contemporary living, construction, and materials.

A shining example of Figure3’s unique design approach to purpose-built rentals, The Parker places emphasis on social connection and community, coupled with an extensive upscale amenity offering. A unique hospitality partnership with hip urban café 10 Dean amplifies the activated lobby experience, which features a seamless flow between public and private spaces.

In contrast to how rental lobbies were laid out in the past (bare and transient), the approach here focused on connection and convenience; a perfect complement to this amenity driven lifestyle. The space looks beautiful, but is ultimately packed with strategic elements, branded experiences, warm materials, and intimate furniture groupings that influence desired behaviour and elicit emotional responses and positive outcomes for our clients and their tenants.

CONESTOGA COLLEGE COWAN CENTRE FOR MEDICAL SCIENCES AND BIOTECHNOLOGY

INTERIOR DESIGNER: Valerie Gow, ARIDO

DESIGN FIRM: Gow Hastings Architects LOCATION: Kitchener, Ontario

OCCUPANCY DATE: June, 2023

SQUARE FOOTAGE: 16,125 sf

PHOTOGRAPHER: Scott Norsworthy

Designed for the Health Sciences Bachelor of Applied Biotechnology and Medical Laboratory Science Programs at Conestoga College’s Doon Campus in Kitchener, the Cowan Centre transforms existing academic classrooms into state-of-the-art laboratories for cutting-edge research. The design needed to meet highly technical requirements while also supporting Conestoga College’s vision to “put science on display.” The team created bold and bright showcase laboratory spaces that featured the innovative research being done. Being very efficient with organizing the floorplan, the team quickly discovered that the shallow building footprint offered a unique opportunity to layer glazed openings, creating visibility into the laboratories, views to adjacent laboratories, and views out to the woodlot. This design strategy resulted in bright, colourful, light-filled research spaces that are not typical of laboratories and generated a unique condition where research could be displayed and celebrated.

The standard for fast casual salad concepts in North America has somehow aligned fresh produce-based dishes with acid green accent walls, clinical white counters and loud graphics. FH Farmhouse reimagines the fast casual salad concept by embracing farming culture and sustainability. Located in a converted heritage chapel, this calming, contemporary salad bodega caters to diverse demographics, from moms to trendsetters craving healthy options. The space is envisioned as a modern interpretation of a farmhouse, blending natural light, verdant greenery and warm wood tones to evoke a welcoming ambiance. The design harmonizes minimalist aesthetics with tactile comforts, featuring bespoke curved details like the planter wall with integrated cove lighting and a ceiling gently arching towards the service bar. These elements, from the reclaimed oak posts to the communal harvest table, reflect both rustic charm and urban sophistication, echoing the spirit of Canadian farm life in a city oasis.

Skycove is a projected glass structure that provides expansive views and captures light from three sides and from above. It’s an intimate space to disconnect, relax, and rejuvenate. While cozy for one, the seat can reach up to 20 square feet, which is large enough for multiple people. When hectic schedules and frequent distractions limit time spent with friends and loved ones, Skycove presents a unique and inviting place that can encourage people to gather and share their lives.

2024 ARIDO ROI PROJECT

In 2013, ARIDO launched a new charitable renovation initiative called ROI: Renew-Originate-Implement. What’s on the Inside? The objective of the initiative is to assist an Ontario-based organization or charity through the improvement of their interior environment where essential services and support are provided. To date, ARIDO has completed five ROI projects: Bridge North (2018), Sketch (2016), Variety Village (2015), Fife House (2014), and the CAMH Archway Clinic (2013).

2024 Project Overview: Revitalizing the OEERC and WAC Shared Offices and Community Hub

This year’s project will focus on the improvement and refresh of the Ontario Employment Education and Research Centre (OEERC) and the Workers’ Action Centre (WAC) shared offices and community hub, located at 720 Spadina Avenue, Suite 223, Toronto, Ontario.

The OEERC is dedicated to enhancing public education and awareness about employment rights and supporting workers whose rights have been violated. The Workers’ Action Centre (WAC) is a worker-based organization committed to improving the lives and

working conditions of people in low-wage and unstable employment. In collaboration, OEERC and WAC offer a range of programs, including a workers’ rights hotline, free clinics, and personalized support; educational workshops, materials, and online resources; public campaigns on various worker issues like paid sick days, unpaid wages and migrant worker exploitation; and training to empower community leaders to uphold and understand workers’ rights.

Unveiling a Transformational Design for Community and Collaboration

WAC and OEERC can’t wait to welcome workers in a bright, fresh, inclusive space where they feel at home and can access the critical support they need. In the new reception area, workers will be able to sit down and enjoy a coffee while waiting for their meetings or appointments. An improved flow will facilitate collaboration across the staff, provide flex spaces where the team can take confidential calls or work quietly to a deadline, and new meeting spaces where staff can have project meetings and impromptu brainstorms.

The unveiling of this redesigned centre is going to be exciting for the whole community! The updated meeting and event space will be an asset not only for staff team and members, but for all the grassroots and community groups that rely on this space for an affordable option to host events and meetings downtown. This design is going to be transformational!
