The re-alignment of this established law firm onto four floors of an urban Calgary office tower conveys a progressive and professional attitude befitting of an international firm. The new plan consolidated all client meeting rooms into a single reception conference floor, with enough flexibility to support both business meeting requirements and evening hospitality with reconfigurable meeting tables, moveable walls and sliding-glass panels, and state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment. In keeping with the firm’s image, a sense of quality was achieved without glitz or opulence. A palette of contrasting materials and a variety of textures, including white and black terrazzo flooring, wool carpet tile, and specially finished oak panels trimmed in brushed stainless steel, create a strong backdrop for the contemporary art collection. Home Theatre

This 2,300-square-foot dwelling for a young family of three was conceived to facilitate the interaction between home life and urban living. Situated on a corner lot, with three public faces, the house is a literal “home theatre with stage right, left and centre, similar to a stage configuration in theatre production. Inside, ceilings and floors shift up and down in a carefully choreographed series of volumetric expressions. A compressed main entry opens to a higher kitchen and dining room. The floor then shifts down to a living area, which leads directly to an outdoor room. The different levels created an opportunity for tall floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the space with natural light and create a strong relationship between indoor and outdoor living. The interior material palette is minimal: polished concrete floors cover the kitchen, basement and dining spaces, and oak engineered wood floors define the living space and bedrooms.

Cornell Community Centre and Library

The Cornell Community Centre and Library in the City of Markham was envisioned as a hub to bring together community, health and wellness under one campus with the existing Markham-Stouffville Hospital. Through its relationship with the hospital, the Centre has expanded its program scope to include a therapy tank, a rehearsal hall that doubles as a lecture theatre, and a publicly accessible medical library within the main library. Innovative spaces and programs combine cultural, educational and therapeutic functions with more traditional recreation, leisure and library services. The library’s stimulating spaces, such as a large children’s information playground, creative media lab, teen area and intimate fireplace lounge, offer an engaging setting for the whole community. Porcelain tile floors, quartz countertops and poured polyurethane floors are all materials carefully selected for their durability and ease of cleaning. A neutral backdrop sets the stage for colourful furniture and graphic pieces.

Thorncrest House Situated in a quiet residential neighbourhood, Thorncrest House stands out as a contemporary gem. The house, which accommodates six people and their guests, was designed to be cohesive with nature, which is evident from every room. Space was optimized by arranging rooms on different levels, allowing for an open-plan layout. An elevated catwalk surrounds the central double-height living room with ample windows to allow the adjacent vegetation to become part of the living quarters. Thorncrest House features a balanced palette of wood accents throughout that provide warmth and wellbeing. Timber covers the raised floors and wraps around ceilings and feature walls. A wood finish was also used on built-in and freestanding cabinetry. Contemporary bursts of colour that also appear throughout the home add a touch of personality.

142 Kenilworth Maintaining the integrity of this original 1930s, two-storey home was a priority. The roofline was preserved and the existing brick was repaired to ensure that the home would blend in with the nearly identical neighbouring houses in the Beach in Toronto’s east end. The home’s ultramodern interiors juxtapose the old and the new. Initially, the home’s central stair, tiny bedrooms, and narrow width felt cramped and claustrophobic. By eliminating walls, repositioning the main stair and adding a 250-square-foot double-height addition created visual access and increased function. Inspired by the work of Donald Judd, the staircase is made up of a series of steel plates welded into rectangular boxes that float up one side of the wall. Blurring the distinction between the interior and exterior, an oversized pivoting glass door leads to a patio composed of reclaimed marble cladding from Toronto’s First Canadian Place.

House on Kings Cross Just north of Toronto, House on Kings Cross sits in an idyllic rural community with winding streets and architecturally distinct homes dating back to the 1960s. The home’s interiors speak a sculptural language, with dramatic swoops that parallel the rolling hills and spectacular ravine, visible from each light-filled room in the house. Split-levels naturally expand and contract to create movement and intimacy. The soaring ceilings of the great room gracefully sweep down to carve out the second floor, which houses the home’s four bedrooms. The gentle curve is continued on the floor as it spills into the kitchen. The materials were carefully selected for their natural properties and ability to reinforce the tranquil quality of the home. Marble, limestone, glass and solid wood finishes add warmth and provide a neutral backdrop to view changing seasonal colours.

Shimmering Heights With their family now grown, the clients were ready to relinquish their suburban home in favour of an urban-central lifestyle. A new luxury residential tower being erected in their neighbourhood was the perfect solution to completely customize the 2,300-square-foot unit into a home suited to their changing needs. Walls of windows on the east, south and west sides of the suite offer expansive vistas of the cityscape and lake beyond. The design challenge was to balance opposing focal points: the stunning views outside, and the client’s

The Galleria Luxury Hall West The Galleria Luxury Hall located in Seoul, South Korea, felt a diminishing sense of identity amongst the collective identities and third-party brands housed within its space. The shopper experience was becoming value-based and driven by price comparison and convenience between competitors. Recognizing an opportunity to bolster its position as a destination for luxury retail, a design vision was developed to meet evolving customer expectations. Four of the existing floors were redesigned as a unified Galleria environment. Inspired by a gallery space, the play of scale, sculptural profiles, subtle contrasts and tailored details create a welcoming backdrop that anchors designer collections. Traditional hard boundaries outlining traffic patterns were removed as they encouraged shopping from the aisle. Now, flexibility in product placement encourages shoppers to meander effortlessly throughout the space. The ability to adapt tenant spaces removes previous limitations of permanence, allowing the retailer to respond quickly to changing consumer demands. The Galleria has since reported an overall sales increase of 33 per cent in the first

Squint Eyewear Located on a busy stretch of Yonge Street in North Toronto, Squint Eyewear is a store filled with Old World charm atypical of the neighbourhood. The focus was to create a retail boutique that feels as though it was transported from New York’s SoHo neighbourhood. Six displays featuring metal wall shelves that are visually anchored by custom credenzas exist side-byside with an eclectic collection of “found pieces” of furniture, like a mid-century lounge chair, café tables and laboratory cases. Displays are tactile and approachable and encourage browsing. Merchandising balances the clean and architectural alignment of eyeglasses on shelves with the more artisanal curio cases, glass bell jars and articulating wooden hands. The storefront window, with a custom-designed monocle display curtain, entices shoppers into the store. The balance of old and new lends to a curiosity-shop vibe that is both welcoming and charming.

Mark Lash Flagship Mark Lash, a Canadian designer of fine jewellery, launched his namesake brand more than two decades ago and has since grown to become one of North America’s most coveted jewellery brands. Inspired by the beauty and timelessness of his trademark designs, the new flagship store in Toronto encapsulates the Mark Lash creative ethos in a luxurious new identity. Finishes of honed marble, matte lacquered panels and custom panelled walls envelope the space while lighting, emanating primarily from the vitrines, shines on the product and floods the space with a warm glow. Capitalizing on jewellery’s strong connection to fashion, sliding floor-to-ceiling mirrors glide across the full length of the room, allowing clients to try on and admire the pieces. The design takes note from the beauty and simplicity of a pavée-stone setting, where perfecting the intricacies hidden below the surface creates a flawless appearance that accentuates the brilliance of the gems above.

Hudson’s Bay Queen Street Footwear Hudson’s Bay on Queen Street was looking to evolve its footwear offerings to become the largest footwear department in Canada. By relocating The Room footwear to the Bay Street shop front, customers are led through a unique shopping experience that flows seamlessly through three distinct shoe areas. Contemporary whitewash wood perimeters, stone and grey-wash wood floors, metal cage frames and incandescent lighting complement the newly expanded brands. Canadiana timber walls line the contemporary shoe collections; glass and metal is used for lux designer brands, and metal cages for more casual lines. With no branded shops, generic fixtures float throughout allowing for ease of merchandising. Challenged by space, the design team elected to build stock in the basement level with an automated conveyer system that feeds boxes to the sales floor. The space includes a variety of custom furniture pieces that respond to a need for more seating and to promote a more residential feel.

Simons Anjou La Maison Simons is a retailer on the move. Pursuing an aggressive cross-Canada expansion, the 170-year-old, Quebec-based department store is raising the bar in the Canadian marketplace with inventive retail environments to house their private label fashions and global brands. Simons stores are seductive and original: every store is treated as a flagship. The fitting rooms are experiential. From the serpentine wood screened areas with pops of kelly green in the women’s department, to pod-like fitting rooms in peppy brights in the young women’s department, to the tongue-in-cheek men’s club complete with deer head trophies, each experience makes the try-on process fun and interactive. From browsing to buying, usability and functionality are built into the design. Cash desks and lounge areas are outfitted with digital tablets that connect shoppers to the Simons online catalogue. Simons Anjou has surpassed all expectations – generating an online following, increasing regional brand recognition and reinforcing the critical role of bricks and mortar in driving sales channels.

Mendocino A mecca for style-conscious women in Toronto, Mendocino in Yorkdale Mall is the retail chain’s flagship location. The client was keen on creating an inviting and playful interior space that would showcase its fashion-forward pieces. The project takes cues from the tailoring techniques of folding, pleating and layering. The long and narrow retail space is softened by a continuous ribbon of bulkhead around the perimeter. A dramatic X-shaped display platform at the store’s entrance engages and attracts mall patrons. Fitting rooms are divided into two zones with a more luxurious fitting room at the rear that is supplemented with a lounge-like waiting space. A series of layered panels subtly transitions through a gradient of white to charcoal grey, crafting an understated navigational tool that leads patrons around the entirety of the store.

HusK this retailer established a new brand in the emerging luxury organic health and beauty markets. the 1,100-square-foot space, located in toronto’s Yorkville neighbourhood, underwent a complete retrofit, transforming a former row house into a concept store. the result is an interior environment that mirrors the care and detail involved in sourcing the diverse product offerings. the design strategy was guided by the organic and sustainable mandate of the products themselves. the retailer’s commitment to “no hidden ingredients” proved critical to displaying information in a clear and communicative way, empowering customers. Products are displayed based on lifestyle, age and experience rather than by brand. the size and scale of the space promotes browsing in a relaxed and personally curated manner. the store has a second floor that provides private space for personal consulting services.

THe advoCaTes’ soCieTy entering its 51st year, this professional association’s relocation was an opportunity to establish a new image of contemporary relevance and to develop new revenue streams through space rentals. the design directive was to create an efficient office that would support the delivery of member services. It was essential that the space provide maximum flexibility for rentals, with a sophisticated, gallery-like ambiance to differentiate them from conventional meeting venues. In order to achieve the versatility required, a large, daylight-filled education centre was designed to divide into six sound-proof and individually climate-controlled spaces. All zones have adjustable lighting, extensive audio-visual systems, and ceiling-mounted projectors with video capture cameras for webcasting, archival recording and distance learning. Stacking chairs, flip-top tables, bench seating and a large wheeled island further enhance flexibility. the resulting 14,000-square-foot office is highly functional, colourful and contemporary to reflect the strong, forward-thinking organization.

Jackman Reinvents, Headquarters Jackman’s business is retail re-invention. This management consultancy and brand activation firm develops strategies, identifies growth opportunities and connects products and services to customers. Having recently undergone a merger and outgrown its existing spaces, Jackman consolidated its operations onto two floors of an 18,000-square-foot, 20th-century post-and-beam space in downtown Toronto. Given the change, the company saw an opportunity to reinvent their own image as “ABC”: Anything But Corporate. At Jackman, the staff works long, hectic hours, so the client wanted an environment that would feel like home. The kitchen is a relaxed gathering place and social hub of informal and interactive productivity. Jackman’s signature colour, “reinvention red,” saturates every surface in the main stair that connects the two floors. The colourful variety of projects being undertaken at any given moment reshapes the environment. What was a meeting room today can easily be transformed into a project space tomorrow.

Autodesk Autodesk, a world leader in research and software design, manufacturing, media and entertainment industries, saw an opportunity in their upcoming renovation plan to make their workplace more engaging, interactive and collaborative for staff and visitors. The solution was a bold reception area and social hub that flows through to a rooftop patio. The use of bright colours and strong lines are contrasted against the warm wood loft interior. An open ceiling in the reception with a multifaceted architectural cloud anchors the waiting area and showcases the brand’s software roots. Media screens are used to draw attention to Autodesk’s multitude of products and a self sign-in reception desk was created. For many years, Bloor West Dental Group was located on the south side of an urban Toronto streetscape. But when the building directly across the street went up for sale, the client seized the opportunity for the creation of a new, welcoming and technologically advanced dental facility to better serve the community. The space was completely renovated and transformed to house five operatories and six hygiene rooms. The reception is visually connected to the street through tall, clear tempered glass panels. The walnut desk is a curved sculptural piece which welcomes patients as they enter. The seating area is bright and spacious, while the operatories are compact, ergonomic and efficient. Hidden from view are lead-lined walls to protect against X-ray transmission, nitrous oxide tanks, and multiple compressor units required to operate dental instruments. Walnut veneered woodwork, quartz countertops, Owen Sound limestone and back-painted glass and acrylic panels in the ceiling over reception make up the finish palette.

The Roy Located in Halifax’s historical warehouse district, this presentation centre is an expression of luxury lifestyle and, as per the client’s directive, an event space. The experience starts with a sense of anticipation in a double-height foyer, then moves through a narrow threshold of blackened wood panelling to reveal fresh “sail” white walls and white oak floors. Sculptural forms and polished urban finishes are juxtaposed against raw, textural elements to create a contemporary yet relaxed environment with a breathtaking panoramic view of the Halifax Harbour. Oversized harbour graphics become art installations, along with the sunken living room vignette and retail cases that tastefully display floor plans. A structural column discovered during demolition that could not be relocated was accentuated by adding a matching faux column on the opposite side of the room. Working with the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the space prominently displays work by local artist Graeme Patterson.

383 Sorauren The sales centre for a 10-storey condominium project located in the heart of Toronto’s Roncensvalles neighbourhood was designed to evoke the community’s rich industrial roots and its emergence as an art and design district. When viewed from the street, two large, rectangular windows frame the two main sections of the sales centre: the presentation space, containing the reception, offices, lounge and closing areas; and the model suite. Inside, a large glass partition acts as a dividing wall, yet allows views into either the model suite or presentation space. A carefully defined route leads from an anteroom that houses the material sample boards to the model suite. At the center of the presentation space is a custom-designed, hot-rolled steel closing table. The use of raw, unadorned materials, such as oil-finished wood, re-interpret the project’s industrial past. A rotating apparatus housing the touchscreen monitors can be pivoted to face the closing tables or the street at night to engage passersby.

Yonge + Rich Presentation Centre

Located in the heart of Toronto’s Financial District, Yonge + Rich is envisioned to become a blue-green oasis amidst a sea of big-city concrete. Setting the tone for the 50-storey tower, the presentation centre targets a well-traveled, sophisticated clientele. The 3,025-square-foot showroom was constructed on-site in an 18th-century building. Evoking the sensibility of an art gallery rather than a traditional sales centre, the space was thoughtfully curated with commissioned art pieces that grace the walls atop a neutral colour scheme with shades of grey and muted colours. The layout of the showroom engages the client in a sensory discovery of three distinct zones. Upon arrival, a cantilevered table equipped with LED touchscreens and a scaled model condo introduces guests to the development. In the center, glass partitions define a lounge area and geometric, structured seating conveys the relaxed atmosphere. At the rear of the showroom, suite finishes are artfully displayed on tables for client viewing.

Establishing a flexible space for exhibitions and events, the crisp, new red and white Architecture Gallery at Ryerson University’s Architectural Sciences building revitalizes its Brutalist-era lobby with a distinctly contemporary sensibility. Occupying a space that was formerly a storage room, the gallery pushes its gleaming white palette into the heavy concrete and quarry tile lobby. Oversized, glass pivot doors draw students and faculty through a deep, felt-wrapped threshold and into the gallery space. Inside the gallery, the back wall is faceted into flat sections to maximize the mountable display area. Strategically placed slot windows provide sneak peeks into the gallery from an array of prominent public spaces. An adjustable lighting and hanging system enables the space to be completely reinterpreted with each new show.

W Hotel Guangzhou Guest rooms W Guangzhou is situated in the city’s bustling Pearl River New Town District, a rapidly evolving center known for its fashion, entertainment, commerce and design. The hotel, complete with 317 guest rooms and suites, is the brand’s first location in mainland China. Two types of guest rooms with similar footprints were designed, each with distinctive characteristics. Guest room “Fire” delivers surprise. At the flick of a switch, a black glass panel transforms into a simulated LED fireplace and info panel. Another switch activates a vault of specialty refreshments that rise from a concealed hydraulic lift. Dark wood paneling and tailored upholstery panels infuse the room with richness and class. In the “Jewel” room, a palette in shades of grey and varying blues is shared with accenting glass and wood paneling. Light-coloured furniture sits atop plush wool carpet, reinforcing the theme of jewels housed in a velvet box.

Stratus Bar & Restaurant The Toronto Athletic Club occupies the top three floors in the Toronto-Dominion Centre tower. Stratus, the club’s bar and restaurant was in need of a renovation to create a space that was formal enough to be rented out for weddings, yet casual enough for members to feel comfortable dining there after a workout. The owner also wanted a space that could hold multiple events concurrently. The design team created a versatile sequence of varied yet aesthetically unified zones within the 2,700-square-foot space. From the elevator, a spectacular view to the exterior can be seen through the central bar area, while lattice-like bronze metal and mirror screens offer privacy over seating areas. A 90-degree turn leads into the dining area, which can be subdivided into two rooms or closed off from the bar by pivoting doors. A 10-seat private dining room that is partially enclosed by curving, bottle-lined glass screens adds to the range of spaces.

Inspired by a fictional magazine editor’s early-20th-century mansion, a fashionable Old World atmosphere permeates the W Lounge at W Hotel Guangzhou. Upon entry, the feeling is one of being invited to a private cocktail party in the editor’s salon. The space has a curated feel, designed to give the impression that each item was collected over time. From its furniture to materials and accessories, the lounge has a simple elegance that’s equal parts luxury and playfulness. W Lounge is divided into a series of rooms and open sightlines invite guests to venture from room to room. The muted decadence of the space is is emphasized by a palette of dark macassar ebony, vals quartzite and cristallo classico marbles. Custom-patterned black, gold and clear mirrored surfaces provide a modern nod to traditional wood panelling.

The harbourside restaurant LeGros & Motti in St. John’s, Newfoundland, embodies FrenchItalian food fusion. The environment, inspired by the client’s heritage and the city’s immigrant roots, blends a French bistro vibe with a traditional Italian trattoria for an upscale, casual restaurant that also serves as an entertainment venue. Drawing on inspiration from New York’s Meatpacking District and the active St. John’s harbour, LeGros & Motti brings together the edgy industrial feel of these two worlds. The space is a large warehouse constructed with industrial corten and black steel panels and exposed brick. Reclaimed wood floors contrast with the buttery leather booths. Large windows open onto the activities of the harbour on one side, and to the old city on the other. As you enter the bar, you’re greeted by the 40-foothigh wall of wine. Upstairs, there is another dining area and an industrial steel catwalk that runs along a wall of windows, both with views to the bar below.

Park Property Management Offices Reclaiming a 2,000 square-foot penthouse that was once used for storage in a 1960s rental building, this regional property management office effectively turned a broom closet with fantastic panoramic city views into an inspiring mid-century-modern workplace. Taking its stylistic cues from the Mad Men era, the office was turned into a timeless space with a residential feel. A folded concrete roof structure, original terrazzo flooring and existing sconce lighting fixtures were cleaned and repaired and incorporated into the design. The open-plan space accommodates a staff of 10 staff with two private offices, a meeting area, communal lunch lounge and spacious reception. The space is comfortable, welcoming and in sync with the family-owned business’s core values of quality, craftsmanship and long-standing relationships. It proves that, even in real-estate-starved cities like Toronto, space solutions are often right under one’s nose. Or in this case, up on the roof.

Reincarnated Residence Hardware When the interior designers’ long-time client became involved in a project to transform a 19th-century Romanesque-style church into private residences, the design team was tasked with designing his personal residence. Following a self-imposed eight-year exile in Paris, the client wished to create a home that emulated classic Parisian proportions and plans: a series of aligned rooms, all with 14-foot-high ceilings and separated by 12-foot-high pocket doors. It was imperative that the hardware for the pocket doors create a substantial statement to help complete the look. Functionally, the hardware had to tuck away when the doors were fully recessed into the wall. Understated, medallion-like hardware was custom-designed without the need for buttons, trip levers, or rockers to pull the door from the pocket recess. The oil-rub bronze finish matches the existing hardware throughout the house and plays on the blackened steel industrial theme. A star motif, a considered finishing detail, is created when the doors meet.

Cornell Community Centre and Library - Shelving

Interior Designer:

Michelle M. Sta. Ana-Ascenzi, ARIDO Design Firm:

Conceived as part of a larger multi-use community recreation centre and connected directly to the existing Markham-Stouffville Hospital, the Cornell Public Library is at the heart of the integrated healthcare campus - the first of its kind in Canada. Over the years, the function of the library has shifted from a quiet space for reading and research to a collaborative, social environment with access to media and technology. The library staff commissioned millwork to address these needs: double-sided book shelves, magazine holders and CD and DVD display units were built on casters for easy movement. Self-serve stations to either find references in print or to check out items were developed to reduce wait times. A large children’s discovery area provides ample opportunities for children to explore and learn with low computer stations for video games. Taking cues from popular bookstores, narrow shelves at eye-level enable books to be displayed face-out for maximum visibility.

This award-winning retail space was created in collaboration with industrial designers, architects and owners. The store design responds to the client’s challenge to connect the community with local culture and indigenous building materials, while delivering an innovative and engaging space within a mall environment. The wood façade which was chosen for its warm and welcoming qualities, establishes a striking contrast to the stone and glass surroundings and is a literal interpretation of the client’s values of harmony and balance. Sourced from the collection of the industrial designer’s workshop, the facade is made up of scraps of wood from tanning barrels, discarded shipping pallets, submerged warf beams and a mixture of off-cuts from countless furniture pieces. The façade incorporates over 35,000 wood blocks that form a 23-foot-high pixelated image of a fallen Canadian maple leaf. This bold entrance entices shoppers with its dynamism, originality, tactility and even its scent. Inside, more wood elements echo the artistry found on the exterior.
