Montreal-based interior designer Jean de Lessard cites Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea as his source of inspiration in thinking of ways to approach a traditional fish market project located in Lévis, on the south shore of Quebec City – named, appropriately enough, Némeau (hint: read it phonetically). Says de Lessard, “Breaking the usual codes, we invite Némeau customers to explore space and fresh produce.”

At 18 years and counting, our Best of Canada design competition is not only alive and well but also healthier than ever. This year, we received a record number of entries (175); and I can tell you that winnowing the selection down to a manageable number of winners (20) was no easy task for our excellent panel of judges. - - - - - - - - - - - - -----------------------------------------------Friends of mine (some in the industry, others not) often ask me to identify trends – a request I usually shrink from. But this goaround of the competition (the ninth I’ve witnessed), I can readily identify three: the deft use of wood; a judicious sprinkling of whimsy; and the employment of an element of surprise. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -------------------------------------------------Standouts in the wood department include Montreal’s Bibliothèque du Boise, designed by Lemay, featuring a handsome slatted, folddown ceiling (page 35); Vancouver’s York House Senior School, by Acton Ostry Architects, with its evocative materials palette of blond wood and brutalist concrete (page 37); and Toronto’s Kinton Ramen,

Canadian Interiors’ Best of Canada design competition is Canada’s only design competition focussing on interior design projects and products without regard to size, budget or location. We welcome submissions from interior designers, architects, landscape architects, decorators, crafts persons and design students. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -------------------------------------------------This year, submissions went through the roof – or rather reached the roof – for a record high. We received 175 entries from across Canada, in 11 categories: Office, Institutional, Hospitality, Condo Public Areas, Residential, Retail, Exhibit, Marketing, Landscape, Student and Product. The projects and products were each judged anonymously and on their individual merit. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -------------------------------------------------Four judges took part this year. They are Lars Dressler, one half of the material-based design concern Brothers Dressler, in Toronto; Tom Balaban, principal of Montreal-based architectural practice TBA (Thomas Balaban Architect); Caroline Robbie, partner at Torontobased Quadrangle Architects; and Matthew Searle, president of Searle & Company, a boutique marketing consultancy, in Toronto. - -------------------------------------------------As always, the day of judging was lively and instructive. After careful consideration and a lot of good-natured back and forth, the judges chose 20 winners. The organic, biological-looking forms of Spanish Art Nouveau architect Antoni Gaudí remain ever influential. In the wrong hands, the curvy, antirectilinear formal vocabulary of Gaudi’s iconic Casa Milla, Parque Güell and the Sagrada Familia cathedral in Barcelona devolves into kitsch. Partisans avoids this pitfall though rigour and a disciplined vision of its elf-proclaimed “21st-century reinterpretation of Spanish Art Nouveau.” - - - - - - - - - - -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Bar Raval, located on College Street in Little Italy, is not just a bar, but also a casual restaurant for 40 standees (there is no seating) that introduces a cuisine from northern Spain known as pincho, wherein a small, tapas-like snack is toothpicked to a piece of bread. The client is the resto’s chef, the well-known Grant van Gameren (owner of nearby Bar Isabel, late of the Black Hoof) and resident mixologists Mike Webster and Robin Goodfellow. They approached Partisans co-founders Pooya Baktash and Alex Josephson, and partner Jonathan Friedman, to create an “art piece” eatery that would elevate the status of the mixed drink. Accordingly, the designers masterminded every detail, from drip trays, gutters and stools to brass foot rails, vent covers, metal window screens and acoustic panels. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The big design idea is a lattice or shroud “carefully hewn from what look like unbroken Möbius strips of sinuous mahogany,” in the designers’ words, that envelops and transforms the boxy base-building space into an environment that blurs distinctions between walls and ceiling. The mahogany shroud loops around the entrance and windows and accretes around the bar like wisteria on steroids. Discreet fruit bowl-like recesses in the countertop front function as drink holders. Polished, smooth areas of the shroud alternate with surfaces incised with parallel lines evoking the swirls of a topographical map or the ventral grooves running along the lower jaw of a humpback whale, as in Pacific Life insurance’s logo. In Corporateland, the move to new and bigger offices may come at the price of losing those more intimate spaces that fostered the exchange of bright ideas. When fast-growing developer and builder Broccolini Construction needed to relocate to much larger, 32,300 square-foot quarters in Montreal, Rubin & Rotman Architects placed communication and collaboration among Broccolini’s three major departments – real estate, estimation and construction – atop the priority list of its design desiderata. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------It may look like a Photoshop trick, but those amazingly precise honed boundaries on the new office’s sloping and rectilinear wall, floor and ceiling planes are real. They act as massive wayfinding devices while showcasing the company’s mastery of fit and finish. Angular pieces of wood veneer jigsaw-puzzled together highlight axial movement through the space while knitting together public areas, inluding espresso lounge, meeting and collaboration rooms, and reception area. Glass partitions allow for engaging views across the large open spaces. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The company expresses its graphic identity in bold cherry red. Balancing the privacy needed to conduct high-finance business with the openness required to democraticically share natural light and the jaw-dropping views of bustling Victoria Harbour was the design challenge DK Studio Architects faced in fitting out a Hedge Fund’s 3,200-square-foot Hong Kong office space. To that end, offices that look out have fully glazed walls along the corridor; and millwork planes topped by foot-high glass panels in lieu of side walls. - - - - -----------------------------------------Amidst all that transparency, abetted by lighting specified by Toronto lighting designer Suzanne Powadiuk, the luxurious materials sparkle. The palette includes Italian walnut on walls and ceilings, and basaltina (light grey Italian basalt) floors in the main, donut-shaped corridor. - - - - - -----------------------------------------The client brief called for inviting living room-like spaces more akin to a luxury hotel or an art gallery than a typical corporate office. Berlin-based artist Marc Bowditch created several large pieces for the office. Prime among them is a bronze-framed, 36-panel matrix of rodeo-bull watercolours on the main conference room’s Venetian-plaster wall plaster. ------------------------------------------•

Pratt & Whitney Canada Plant 22 lobby renovation, Mississauga Pearce McCluskey Architects, Mississauga

When a renovation of the tired-looking 2,700-square-foot lobby in Pratt & Whitney’s Mississauga facility was deemed necessary to better express the jet-aircraft company’s innovative brand, Pearce McCluskey Architects won the RFP shortlist selection process. The scope of work included the adjacent corridor and barrier-free entry vestibule; a new barrier-free reception/security desk sheathed in white quartz and chocolate porcelain tile; and security turnstiles, washrooms and new seating. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -------------------------------------------------A restrained palette of neutral grey, silver and white acts as the backdrop for walnut-veneer wall panels that alternate with bold photomurals of engine closeups. A slat screen of aluminum, the metal perhaps most often associated with aerodynamics, wraps the walls and ceiling above the desk and seating areas. The slats’ anodized finish and finger joints impart high-tech sleekness to the lobby. - - - - - -------------------------------------------------In front of the (existing) big circular window, the slats enhance the play of light and shadow and reduce glare. Above the centre of the room, the slats intersect to form a wing profile. Here, the doubling-up of the slats adds opacity that conceals the roof structure and mechanical equipment. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -------------------------------------------------•

Libraries, traditionally, are quiet places. With its bookstacks, multimedia collections, computer work stations, meeting and training rooms, teen and youth areas, café, exhibition gallery and archival storage, Bibliothèque du Boise, located on parkland in Montreal’s Saint-Laurent borough, is as much community living room as book hotel. The decibel level may be sedate, yet visually the institution positively shouts, thanks to the vibrant splashes of colour. More than decor enhancements, they serve as orientation landmarks within the 54,000-square-foot space and signify the age groups associated with various sections of the layout. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Illuminated coloured niches mark the entry to each section. Within a section, furniture colour announces a section’s identity. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Architectural disruptions liven up the interior: pieces of the ceiling and roof abruptly fold down to form light wells that funnel daylight deep into the bowels of the building. The resulting high level of natural illumination doubtless contributed to the building’s recent LEED Platinum certification. Attendance figures of more than 1,200 visitors daily, well above the norm for a library this size, attest to the project’s success. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------•

There’s nothing “girly” about the new, 36,000-square-foot senior students’ addition to York House Senior School, an independent K-through-12 girls’ school in Vancouver’s Shaughnessy neighborhood. The no-nonsense blond wood and brutalist concrete materials palette, harking back to Arthur Erickson, would not be out of place in a boys’ school or military academy. If Acton Ostry Architects meant to send a message about disappearing gender roles, this jibes with the donor names screen-printed onto the glass guards delineating circulation routes through the atrium. The new, 87-seat Kinton Ramen restaurant, located along Bloor Street West’s lively Koreatown strip of Asian eateries, builds on the success and design features of the original, single-storey Kinton near the Art Gallery of Ontario. Both establishments offer casual dining of ramen cuisine, based on wheat noodles in a fish- or meat-based broth. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------On the facade, three-foot-tall K-I-N-T-O-N letters at floor level, and the profile of a pig above the entrance set into the upper storeys’ wooden slat screen, allude to the Japanese word “kinton” or “golden pig.” - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Inside, feature walls are clad in a memorable highly tactile detail from the first location, spruce blocks set at an angle, then piled in zigzags. The broad expanse of unpainted wood evokes the natural, unadulterated purity of the ingredients in the dishes that are prepared in the open kitchens that face long communal tables on both floors. Challenged to pay homage to past traditions with a modern approach, the designers transformed one of the distillery’s old tank houses into a spectacular environment. Davidson Rafailidis is Stephanie Davidson from London, ON, and George Rafailidis from Fuerstenfeldbruck, Germany. They met as students at the Architectural Association in London, U.K. in 2004 and began to work together formally in 2009. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------In a residential neighbourhood of Buffalo, the designers converted a neglected corner store — added in 1921 to the corner of a three-story 1880 house — into a coffee shop. At the core of the space is the winter’s heat source, a large-scale kachelöfen (German for “masonry heater’), constructed as a long, horizontal heated bench and a vertical tower (the latter also forms a spatial pocket that contains the bathroom). Researched and developed in close collaboration with a local mason, it is the largest of its kind in North America. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------In summer, extra-large operable windows and skylights provide natural ventilation and passive cooling. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The space between the windows and heater provides an open area for ever-changing seating patterns. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------•

Her Majesty’s Pleasure (HMP) is equal parts café/bistro, retail boutique, beauty salon, bar and event space — all located under one roof in downtown Toronto. Situated at the base of a new condo building, it’s a place for a stylish urbanite to get a manicure, pedicure and/or blowout while socializing, shopping and sipping an elixir of his or her choice. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The client and design team set out to challenge the conventions of the salon experience. The design, they found, needed to blur the lines between each zone by subtly reiterating materials, pattern and details, creating spaces within spaces. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The café-bar contains an ornate yet stripped-down, whitewashed bar topped with white marble; it wraps around into the salon areas and sets the stage for manicures. A raised wooden deck lined with Muskoka chairs suggests a cottage-like retreat. In another space, the secluded makeup lounge/ party room resembles a chic cabin. As the rural cousin to the Drake Hotel in Toronto, the 11-room, twosuite inn reinvents the tired B&B, taking aesthetic cues from a lexicon of references — from the British country inn and villa in the Hamptons to summer camps and southern Ontario farmhouses. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -----------------------------------------The trick was to accommodate a wide range of hospitality options on a small site, already home to a historic iron foundry and flanked by a protected flood plain, the shores of Lake Ontario and the town of Wellington. The team arranged several additions around the foundry: a screened in Pavilion; an A-frame dining room clad in Douglas fir and steel; Glass Box event space/games room; and a quirky Owner’s Suite. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -----------------------------------------Interiors delicately balance old and new, rural and urban, high-tech and craft. Colourful idiosyncrasies rule, such as bright and contrasting floor tiles, patterned wallpaper and a mishmash of fabrics and furniture. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -----------------------------------------•

Calgary’s National Hotel opened in 1908 near the CP Rail station, sat vacant, fell into disrepair and was recently renovated. The exterior brickwork and windows were the only historical elements to be preserved. Inside, the new Nash Restaurant and Off Cut Bar celebrate the hotel’s Edwardian elegance and colourful history as a cornerstone of the community in the early part of the 20th century. Materials used prominently in the original hotel, such as marble, oak and brass, reappear, but in a contemporary way. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -------------------------------------------------The entrance lobby features a custom mosaic-tile floor, Victorian brass pendant lights and stained-glass wall. Woven-linen upholstery, reclaimed-wood tables and an overscale, hand-drawn map of Calgary along one wall characterize the restaurant. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -------------------------------------------------The Off Cut bar salutes the hotel’s racy youth, when its stretch of 9th Avenue was infamously known as Whisky Row, where whisky and women were always on tap. The black Anaglypta (pressed paper simulating tin) ceiling, smoky blue walls and flooring of fumed oak, the wood used for whisky barrels, lend a period intimacy. - - - - - - - -------------------------------------------------•

The 1,300-square-foot condo over two floors was created for a Montreal couple. The building’s original purpose — as a Stelco factory — is still evident in the exposed concrete columns and very high ceilings. It serves as inspiration for the palette of materials used in the interior design. - - - - - -----------------------------------------A sculptural spiral staircase fabricated in raw blue steel connects the two floors. The lower level contains the main entrance and houses the owners’ master suite: bedroom, dressing room, home office and bathroom (the dressing room incorporates a Murphy bed to welcome the occasional guest). Sliding and retractable steel-and-glass panels provide privacy and allow open spaces to flow. Walnut flooring and anigre panels provide warmth; pale accents include white lacquered cabinetry, marble and quartz. - - - -----------------------------------------The upper floor is dedicated to the living space (kitchen, living room, informal dining). It opens to views of the courtyard on the kitchen side and a canal on the living-room side. ------------------------------------------•

Just north of Toronto, Kings Cross is a rural community with architecturally distinct houses dating back to the 1960s. Sitting amid low, lush greenery, this new house occupies the footprint of a previous house, but is thoroughly modern in both design and performance. - - - - - -----------------------------------------It takes its design cues from the unusual topography of the area and from the ranch-style mansard roofs of neighbouring houses. Dramatically horizontal and flooded with light, it is at the same time protective and sheltering. -----------------------------------------The sinuous curve of a glass wall on the rear facade establishes the sculptural language of the interior. The soaring ceiling of the great room sweeps down to carve out the second floor that holds the bedrooms; the gentle curve is reiterated as the floor spills into the kitchen. This playful scooping and carving creates an internal landscape that parallels the rolling hills of the spectacular ravine, visible from each light-filled room in the house. - - -----------------------------------------•

Creepy yet cool, Reich+Petch’s design (in association with the TIFF Bell Lightbox Exhibitions team) for the “David Cronenberg: Evolution” exhibit encapsulates the surreal angst of the audacious Canadian film director, patriarch of the body-horror genre. The dark, tough look of the installation mirrors his cruel world of exploding heads (Scanners), car-accident victim masochist porn (Crash) and humanoid monsters (The Fly, Naked Lunch). - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -----------------------------------------The immersive, interactive exhibition offers artifacts, movie props, film clips, lobby cards and letters (“Saw The Fly— loved it,” Martin Scorsese writes) that aim, the design brief states, to “delight and frighten film enthusiasts and fans.” - -----------------------------------------At the exhibit’s centre, a large curvilinear installation represents Cronenberg’s brain. The edges display iconic props and artwork from his oeuvre flanked by vignettes and large images that put the objects in their context. At the centre, in the bowels of the brain, so to speak, visitors can view videos of Cronenberg interviews. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -----------------------------------------The exhibit’s crown jewels include the chamber, evoking a space capsule or diving bell decked out with sci-fi fins, where Jeff Goldblum metamorphoses into The Fly. - - - - - ------------------------------------------•

Papier15 Art Fair, Montreal Architecturama, Montreal

Over an April weekend, 17,000 visitors viewed works on paper by 400 artists repped by 40 galleries across Canada. The artworks sprawled over three floors amid the expansive white walls and raw concrete floors of a former schmatte factory at Complexe de Gaspé in Montreal’s Mile End neighbourhood. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Given the large floor space and the temporary nature of the exhibit, the display system by Architecturama — the Montreal-based partnership of architects Sylvain Bilodeau and Nicolas Mathieu-Tremblay – had to be extremely economical. What could be cheaper than rolls of bond paper, magnets, rented post shores (steel posts for scaffolding) and red carpet? Paper, after all, was the theme of the fair; its fragile, ephemeral quality mirrored the short life of the show. The paper strips served as demising walls to divide exhibition booths. From a distance, the walls’ partial opacity would tantalize visitors with sneak peeks of booths farther away, encouraging a steady traffic flow. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The bond paper’s deployment in horizontal strips echoed the alignment of the strip windows wrapping the building. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------•

The Roy: Condominium Presentation Centre, Halifax Union31 Inc., Toronto

Located in Halifax’s historical warehouse district, the presentation centre for the landmark Roy project was conceived as an “expression” of a luxury lifestyle: more an event space than a traditional marketing centre. Created for an upmarket clientele and intended to be inclusive of the immediate community, oversize harbour graphics became art installations in and of themselves, as did the sunken-living-room vignette and display cases full of objets d’art as well as condo plans. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The experience began in a double-height foyer volume, then moved through a narrow threshold of blackened/charred wood panelling before the reveal of fresh “sail white” walls and white oak floors. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------To create a gallery feel, the designers worked with the inherent long linear nature of the off-site sales office; removed traditional marketing plans from the walls and placed them in the aforementioned display cases; and, in collaboration with the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, prominently displayed work by local artist Graeme Patterson. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------•

Bass is a seating collection designed for both public and semi-private areas. For public spaces, a traditional seating arrangement with a low back is appropriate; for open spaces, a high back with sound-absorbing acoustic properties is desired for privacy. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The basic Bass design is a square minimalist armchair and sofa. The seating angle — providing the comfortable feeling of a deep lounge chair — is applied by tilting the chair where the distinct profile originates. Bass rests on a simple but elegant tubular base, which emphasizes its clean, tailored, angular lines. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------A high-back version features high sides as well as back. Juxta, designed by EOOS, is an innovative collection of chairs, stools and tables created to address the myriad ways people behave and interact while meeting. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------In large groups or small, in public or private spaces, the juxtaposition of opposing behaviours often occurs in a single scenario at the same time: people in formal meetings pair up and carry on an informal discussion while the meeting goes on around them; other people use mobile chairs to pull up to a table where a stationary meeting is in progress; still other people stand or sit in stools. Juxta addresses all the possibilities. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The collection’s chairs have a graceful, rounded silhouette defined by one continuous outline. Slim volumes are grounded by the bases; tablet arm and base appear as one expression. In Corktown, Toronto’s old but up-and-coming neighbourhood, Odin offers a new twist on the coffee bar

It started with the name: Odin, CEO of the Norse god staffing chart, and father of Thor, god of thunder; and also the moniker of a small downtown Toronto coffee bar owned by Thomas Junek and Patrick Tu. The pair, wishful of extending their brand with a flagship Odin location, last year bought into a newly constructed building in King Street East’s rapidly upscaling Corktown neighbourhood. The groundfloor corner unit would house a coffee bar cum bar, suitable for catering to the area’s day-to-night customer base from nearby office buildings and condos. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -------------------------------------------------Next came the concept of linking the Scandinavian name to that region’s physical nature as well as to its famously sleek modern style. Enter David Grant-Rubash, principal of Toronto’s Phaedrus Studio. Not only did he share his clients’ enthusiasm for Northern European design, he is also a coffee connoisseur and a long-time Thor patron. -------------------------------------------------Together, the three played around with the basic elements of sub-arctic landscape – taking the idea of icebergs, bleak rock formations and dense woods, twisting and turning them into barely recognizable geometric abstractions. “We sculpted and shaped everything,” says GrantRubash. “We pushed and pulled every little facet ourselves with no CANADIAN INTERIORS 9/10 2015

automation: no angle is the same size, nothing has been created out of algorithms.” - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -------------------------------------------------Plywood veneer so blond as to be almost white boldly triangles in and out to form the impressive Berg Bar service section. Two huge, impossibly balanced “berg” shards carry the concept upwards, highlighting the twin service areas. Almost as visually impressive, from the back wall plain plywood shelving flies up and curves across the high ceiling, breaking apart as it goes, scattering into loose segments that act as sound baffles as well as partially obscure the overhead mechanicals. - -------------------------------------------------The complexity of these sculptural pieces so dominates that the rest of the space is kept purposely quiet to even things out. “We wanted to balance the soft, light-filled calm with playful and dynamic architecture,” says Grant-Rubash, adding that his style-conscious clients played an integral part in crafting the final design. As for the Nordic components: “We really dug into what that meant to the brand and tried to integrate them early on in the process – but we didn’t hang onto them too much.
