While known mainly for furniture, the venerable design house uses Maison & Objet to launch its accessories lines, and this year it was the recent project by Front that captured how animals sleep, in poses that seemingly exude tranquillity. Risko | Viarco Portugal A drawing desk conceived of and built within a pencil factory: can it get any more poetic? Moustache X SNCF Originally imagined for the new high-speed trains, the TGV lamp was designed by Ionna Vautrin at the SNCF’s request to bring a “home-like” domestic character to train trips. A trip to Maison & Objet doesn’t feel complete without a lookie-loo at what Seletti has up its psychedelic sleeve. Brandina | MiaCara If you didn’t know better, this chaise longue looks like it is intended for humans. But in fact the German brand for style-conscious pet parents tapped Danish designer Julie Carl for a modern take on the dog bed, with an elevated metal frame, ultra-comfortable cushions, and a spring-mounted base. www.miacara.com

Awa | TEO Named after the Japanese word for “bubble” and inspired by inflatable Japanese construction site lamps, as well as the image of blowing itself, like glass blowing or bubble-gum. Mosaic Patterns | Bisazza Bisazza’s booth was exploding with trees, hedges and shrubs to form not just a nice oasis on the show floor, but also a backdrop for 20 new mosaics all inspired by outdoor greenery. Designer Carlo Dal Bianco took his inspirations mostly from famous French gardens, castles and palaces, such as Malmaison, a collection of oversized monumental roses taken from Joséphine Bonaparte’s gardens at Chateau de Malmaison. www.bisazza.com

This new collection by one of the members of the Gruppo Romani family offers an interesting interpretation of the urban charm of oxidized metals, and in a sea of marble it reminds us why we have such an affinity for old industrial atmospheres. A mixture of tones is used to create five colour options in iron, copper, steel, lead and platinum and of course come in an array of sizes suitable for residential and commercial construction. www.cit.it

This new collection is inspired by a Lombard stone known as Ceppo di Grè, which was used to build the palaces, villas and monuments that characterize the historical appearance of the city of Milan. Arbor | Atlas Concorde While mimicking the visual and tactile characteristics of wood in porcelain tiles is not new, this new collection is one of several where wood effects in ceramics are becoming increasingly realistic in appearance. Mixing the architecture of places of worship, such as cathedral glass with vein patterns, with references to modern architecture, such as the Art Deco of the Chrysler Building or the pure geometry of Frank Lloyd Wright, Diamond is all about acute angles, colour and grout. Yes, grout: this is an example of a collection that uses every material aspect of the ceramic tile as part of the overall vision. www.mosaicopiu.it

The tiles in the Freedom collection recreate natural effects similar to a European limestone called Hautville, which has been used on the façade of the Empire State Building and the base of the Statue of Liberty (and hence the name of the collection). Delight | Lea Ceramiche

Native | ABK Debuting at Cersaie and inspired by the primordial appeal of porphyry quarried from the mountains of Italy’s Trentino region, this agglomerate-effect collection is part of a broader trend towards interior design applications involving the use of fine-grained stones such as granites, including varieties that are most commonly used in outdoor applications. The dry pressed porcelain slabs come in five colours and can be used on indoor and outdoor floors and walls in residential and commercial buildings. www.abk.it

Lines | Ceramica Bardelli This rectified porcelain tiles collection applies clever concrete floor effects to both walls and floors. Gem Glass | Sicis A Cersaie visit is not complete without a peek at what Sicis is up to. Contemporary and light, this innovative modular storage system from Valencia manufacturer Momocca offers a blank canvas on which users can create their own shelving unit through employment of a seemingly infinite variety of pieces, including colourful upholstered and padded sliding doors. Fontal | Expormim

The local company called on Spanish architect, BD Barcelona co-founder, and Alessi and Driade designer Oscar Tusquets Blanca (who also created the iconic polyethylene red lips sofa with friend Salvador Dalí) to devise lightweight chairs that would suit a variety of hospitality settings, kitchen islands, and waiting rooms. For this year’s fair, Tusquets Blanca added three slick stools in varying heights to his existing Fontal line, Expormim’s first to incorporate rattan. www.expormim.com 5.

At the 54th edition of Feria Hábitat, Valencia’s annual furniture and lighting fair, over 400 local and international exhibitors showcased energetic, sophisticated, and innovative wares, symbolizing a reinvigorated and revolutionized Spain.

Who better to collaborate with on a whimsical Spanish textile collection depicting all-things wonderfully Mediterranean (orchard, garden, beach) than Valencia’s own Javier Mariscal? Comprising six animated styles characterized by bold colours and brush strokes, this unconventional line of fabric by the jovial artist and designer is waterresistant and flame-retardant making it also suitable for outdoor use, in hospitality or residential settings. www.equipo-drt.es 4.

Nuez | Andreu World

One of the first companies to ever show at Hábitat, the 63-year-old brought in big names for 2018: Patricia Urquiola, Jasper Morrison, Alfredo Häberli, and Piergiorgio Cazzaniga. Urquiola presented chairs and stools born from the idea of creating a seat from a single piece of paper. Available in bright and muted shades, the ‘folded’ seat comes in three options (thermoplastic; upholstered with padded seat; or upholstered with padded seat and backrest) with a variety of bases, in various heights. www.andreuworld. com

La Isla | Sancal

Under the theme ‘Jungla,’ the Murcia company easily took the prize for wildest exhibit. Against an electrifying backdrop of bold animal prints, Sancal presented eight new products including occasional tables by Note, an addition to the Swedish studio’s existing line of archipelago seating. La Isla is available in two heights, with round or oval fumé glass tops and bases in several different lacquers. www.sancal.com

London-based Jonathan Prestwich presented a collection of tables for the Alicante company, comprising five types of 100 per cent recyclable polyethylene bases (glossy or matte) plus an extensive range of tops to create a multitude of table styles. Thanks to a simple rotating backrest and movable cushions, this tailored sofa atop short spindly metal legs by Barcelona-based studio Lievore Altherr Molina can be converted into a chaise longue or bed appropriate for small or large spaces. The Valencia manufacturer also launched new seating and side tables from the likes of Francesc Rifé, Ximo Roca, and Javier Pastor. www.gamamobel.com

Majestic and Heritage | Carmenes

Tailored seating, traditional cabinetry, and subtle sophistication define the offering from this Barcelona brand. Among beautifully-furnished contemporary vignettes, Carmenes introduced an updated version of its Majestic sofa—now 90 centimetres deep—to accommodate additional lounging positions; and its Heritage sideboard in taller (123 x 113 cm) and reduced versions (213 x 63 cm)—all designed by Valencian studio La Mamba. www.carmenes.eu 8.

Vondom returned to Hábitat after taking a year off. The Valencia brand—known for its avant-garde, minimalist, and mostly white offerings—launched new pieces from the likes of Karim Rashid, Eugeni Quitllet, Jorge Pense, and Ramon Esteve. Daybed by Esteve, the latest addition to his Vela collection, comes square or round with a retractable top, reclining head rest, and an ice bucket holder. www.vondom.com

A Golden Occasion

The 50th edition of Biennale Interieur in Kortrijk, Belgium was not just a show, but an elegantly curated exhibition that investigates the importance of interior design.

Pivot console | Sem The Pivot collection, designed by Giacomo Moor, takes its name from the â&#x20AC;&#x153;pivotingâ&#x20AC;? mechanism of the doors inserted directly on the assembled piece and opens and closes with a rotating movement. The structure is made of brass tubulars, enriched with tops in precious fossil elm, to which lacquered container elements are added. The doors are made exclusively by Fonderia Artistica Battaglia in etched brass and available in blue, green, red and verdigris. www.sem-milano.com

Into Space | Movecho Designed by Iona Tettelin, this seating collection transports us to an imaginary universe. Each stool consists of a metal structure with three legs and a large seat. A plain stool plus four different armrests/ accessories are available in the collection. The Kvadrat Galaxy fabric that covers the seat has a pattern that reminds us of the star and dust clusters that mimic the galaxy. www.movecho.pt

Earth | Casalis These completely biodegradable, ecofriendly carpets and poufs are created from all-natural materials including wool, natural latex, and plant-based dyes. A desire to reconnect with nature inspired designer Liset van der Scheer to bring the experience of wandering through a forest into the home. To realize her vision, Casalis employed an innovative tufting technique to create a 3D structured carpet mimicking the texture and appearance of moss. www.casalis.be

Bistroo | Extremis So-called since this two-seater feels right at home against the backdrop of a cosy, compact bistro, Bistroo consists of a structure in powder-coated stainless steel and aluminum tabletop, and is composed of one tabletop, two seats, three legs, and available in eight colours. It also has accessories like a tablet holder, a magazine storage and a tray to help people-watching as you enjoy your drinks or have a bite to eat. www.extremis.com

Defined by its interplay of industrial and domestic qualities, Dorval 01 draws equal inspiration from airport runway lights, iconic French blue Mobylettes, and the essential qualities of a chandelier. www.lambertetfils.com

Coil | Bram Kerkhofs

Loop | Per/Use

A modular furniture system designed to combine the function of an open shelf and a display cabinet, each unit is wrapped in a semi-transparent curtain of woven elastic rope instead of a hard shell. To create the curtain-like wall, the pieces of rope are stretched taut and slotted into a curve that is cut out of the stainless steel sheets that form the top and bottom of the cabinet. The colour of the elastic matches the coating on the metal structure of the cabinet. As there are no doors to open, the freestanding unit can be accessed from any side, and the larger units can be used as multi-functional room dividers. www.bram-kerkhofs.be

The Loop is a collection of lights designed by Filip Janssens now available as a standing desk lamp with a metal base on which a vertical panel in wood or marble is turning, holding a metal ring with the light source and capturing the electric cable in a fixed loop. The ring and base are custom made brass pieces and the pivoting vertical part consists of a solid, oiled oak panel, or marble such as calacatta or fior di bosco, as a contemporary reinterpretation of an Art Deco desk lamp. www.peruse.be

Wazo | Push Collection The name, an onomatopoeic derivative of “oiseau,” the French word for “bird,” clearly indicates the inspiration behind these side tables. Whereas traditional fluorescent bulbs have an expiration date, the new Induction Wall Light by Castor Design utilizes electromagnetic induction — the production of voltage due to a change in magnetic field — to extend the life of these popular bulbs.
