New Irish Arts —
More Than Just a Building What really excites us about creating a New Irish Arts Center isn't the building itself—but how that new facility will fuel our mission to stimulate, develop, evolve, and showcase the creativity of great artists in a nourishing environment, inviting the audience into that experience in an intimate way, with all of us having a great time while we’re at it. That's why one of the most important spaces in our new building will be a studio for residencies, workshops, and classes—a place for the development of high-standard work that is innovative and diverse, a place where we can incubate and nourish the contemporary Irish and Irish American artistic voice. In the meantime, we are also playing an active role in the development of the next generation of exciting new work that will grace our stages and others over the coming years. As such we are thrilled to include three co-commissions or co-productions of new works by contemporary Irish and Irish American artists in our upcoming season: With New York’s Danspace Project and Dublin’s Project Arts Centre, we are proudly helping bring to life a new cross-disciplinary work, this is an Irish dance, by the iconic dancer/choreographer Jean Butler and composer/cellist Neil Martin, premiering at Danspace Project in New York City this November before going on to the Kennedy Center next spring. Visit pages 17-18 for more details. Building on the success of last season’s Obiewinning triumph Lippy, we are delighted to be working once again with Dublin’s Dead Centre as we co-produce their latest work, Chekhov’s First Play, in the Dublin Theatre Festival in October. Visit page 9 for more details.
Also this fall, we are thrilled to launch a threeyear residency collaboration with Baryshnikov Arts Center (BAC), where each year IAC and BAC will jointly select and support an Irish artist or company to participate in BAC’s prestigious residency program. These artists will enjoy space and time to develop new work while meeting and engaging with dozens of other New York, national and international artists across a range of disciplines. The first company selected for this exciting new initiative is Brokentalkers, whose moving, innovative Have I No Mouth, co-presented by BAC and IAC, was a highlight of the spring 2014 season. Visit page 10 for more details. This season we continue one of our favorite new series—Muldoon's Picnic, an omnium gatherum of words and music, curated by the Pulitzer winning Paul Muldoon—and launch a new one, comedian Maeve Higgins' One Night in Heaven, a live talk show featuring a different theme each month. Of course, that’s on top of our most robust, dynamic, diverse, wildly entertaining season of performances ever. We say that every year because it always seems to be true! From Pat Shortt to Pat Kinevane to the return of some recent favorites like Mikel Murfi's smash hit The Man In The Woman's Shoes, you won’t want to miss a moment. You don't have to wait for a new building to experience the New Irish Arts Center. It's already here!

Two OBIE Awards, Off-Broadway top honor, for Lippy
Bush Moukarzel and Dead Centre received two Obie Awards from the American Theatre Wing and The Village Voice for their production of Lippy that we co-presented with Abrons Arts Center last fall. Pictured is IAC Executive Director Aidan Connolly, Dead Centre’s Bush Moukarzel, IAC Director of Programming and Education Rachael Gilkey, and Lippy producer Matthew Smyth at the 2015 Obie Awards.
NYT Critics’ Pick & Sell-Out for Panti in High Heels in Low Places
On the heels of Ireland’s historic marriage equality referendum, Ireland’s High Queen, National Treasure, Performance Giant, and Accidental Activist Panti debuted in New York with her smash hit comedy show High Heels in Low Places for five sold-out performances. The New York Times called the show “funny and vulgar, dignified and dishy... a well-constructed argument for the freedom to be yourself.”
This is How we Fly
In April, we presented a genre-busting series of performances from This is How we Fly, featuring fiddler Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh, jazz clarinetist Seán Mac Erlaine, American hard shoe dancer Nic Gareiss, and Swedish percussionist Petter Berndalen. Paul Keating of The Irish Voice said “The intimacy of the space was sublime for experiencing the magic [This is How we Fly] perform together…a most enjoyable evening at the Irish Arts Center doing what they do best in presenting talent who bring their A-game to the little theatre with big ideas and a promising future.”

Award-winning writer and performer Pat Kinevane and company Fishamble return to Irish Arts Center with Underneath, following the runaway international success of Forgotten (spring 2010) and Silent (fall 2012). Sticks and stones didn’t break Her bones, but words and pointing crushed Her. Is Beauty really only skin deep? Does Ugliness hide somewhere deeper? A woman lies dead in her freshly dug grave in the Tumbledown cemetery, Cobh, County Cork. Here she tells the story of her life: her happy childhood and the mother who loved Cleopatra; being struck by lightning and then missing school for a year; her night shifts in hotels washing and mending laundry; up to her ultimate and untimely demise in a north Dublin flat. All via a series of unlikely encounters and heartbreaking betrayals. This stunning new play is a blackly comic, richly vivid tale of a life lived in secret, a testament to the people who live on the fringes, under the nose of everyday life. It explores the surface— and what lies underneath.
Silent (FALL 2012) “A passionate one-man show...Mr. Kinevane interprets Valentino’s highly theatrical screen presence to stunning effect...[he] doesn’t just demand [the audience’s] attention, he commands it. And that difference is what makes Mr. Kinevane an artist of the theater.” – Ben Brantley, The New York Times
Forgotten (SPRING 2010) “The monologues are beautifully written and vivid, what makes this show uniquely memorable is Kinevane’s raw, over-the-top, compassionate performance.” – The New Yorker
“Brilliant...striking…excellent…almost a masterpiece.” - THE IRISH TIMES
“An extraordinary piece of one-man theatre...hilarious... thoroughly entertaining.” - IRISH MAIL ON SUNDAY

A man silently mops the floor with a bucket full of bloody water. He prepares a room that’s not yet ready for its next guest. A woman meets a man and his wife in the parking lot. All three are nervous. Tonight there will be a death. The Last Hotel unites two of Ireland’s most fascinating artists, multi award-winning playwright Enda Walsh and composer Donnacha Dennehy, in a new chamber opera. Walsh’s reputation as a chronicler of the darker side of the Irish psyche has been forged through works such as The Walworth Farce, Misterman, and, most recently, Ballyturk. Dennehy is a composer of urgent, searching music that combines post minimalist overtones with a very Irish sensibility. A thrilling and groundbreaking performance evoking themes of life and death, duty and accountability, The Last Hotel reunites Irish Arts Center with our frequent collaborators Landmark Productions (Mark O’Rowe’s Howie the Rookie, Deirdre Kinahan’s These Halcyon Days), and St. Ann’s Warehouse, with whom we presented a memorial tribute to the late Seamus Heaney during our 2013 PoetryFest. The production is co-produced by one of Ireland’s foremost opera companies, Wide Open Opera, and the cast includes the extraordinary Mikel Murfi, who returns to New York following his acclaimed performance in his play The Man In The Woman’s Shoes.
st Hotel The Last Hotel is the fifth Enda Walsh work St. Ann’s Warehouse has brought to New York, following The Walworth Farce, The New Electric Ballroom, Penelope, and Misterman.
The Last Hotel is supported by piece by piece productions, Culture Ireland, and The Arts Council of Ireland.

$45 premium ($36 members) / $35 general ($28 members) Premium tickets are not available during preview performances WRITTEN AND PERFORMED BY MIKEL MURFI “I think none of us is old, me heart has never been old.” In spring 2015, our audiences fell in love with Pat Farnon, and now he’s back in the awardwinning hands of Mikel Murfi for a special return engagement. It’s October 1978, Pope John Paul the First is not long dead, autumn is closing in and cobbler Pat Farnon has “some business” to do in town. “Today is beginning to feel very special and I’ve no idea why.” The Man In The Woman’s Shoes follows Pat as he walks the five miles from his white cottage to town and back again. He meets unforgettable characters along the way—water diviner Huby Patterson, GAA enthusiast extraordinaire Kitsy Rainey, big voiced Casimir Marshall, an array of farmers all named Gilmartin and Kemp, a man whose idea of a good time is to direct traffic wherever he may find it. Pat may be an ageing man but he has a boundless enthusiasm for life. The Man in The Woman’s Shoes was originally commissioned by the Hawk’s Well Theatre in Sligo with Sligo County Council Arts Service for the Bealtaine Festival in 2012 and last year toured to venues around Ireland. “Higgins is rarer than a blessing of unicorns...she is original and relatively calm, her observations are pithy, her wit delicate, her persona oddly alluring and deftly honest.” - THE IRISH TIMES From Cork via Harlem comes Maeve Higgins, star of page and stage, with an all-new variety show featuring an eclectic and invigorating clutch of guests. Only the wisest voices, freshest thinkers, funniest moments, and best stories will make it past her gates into One Night in Heaven. Bursting onto the New York comedy scene this year with shows across the city and appearances on Comedy Central’s Inside Amy Schumer and National Geographic’s StarTalk, Higgins is the most exciting comedy voice to emerge from Ireland in a generation. She has just been named a 2015 Woman of Influence by The Irish Voice newspaper for her comedy work as well as her writing—Higgins is author of the critically acclaimed essay collection We Have a Good Time, Don’t We? One Night in Heaven features a different theme each month—October sees us savoring comedy and lore around food, November pinches our cheeks as we pinch our pennies and get down to real-talk about money, and December sees love rule the day…and night. Jean Butler’s last contemporary dance piece, hurry (2013), commissioned by the renowned Danspace Project, invoked the choreographer’s celebrated past in Irish step dance. Her new duet, this is an Irish dance, created with Belfast-based cellist Neil Martin in a joint commission by Danspace Project, Irish Arts Center, and Dublin’s Project Arts Centre further unearths this iconic artist’s roots by returning to the interdependent relationship between live music and movement—and the often invisible interplay between dancer and musician in live performance. The movement and music, created simultaneously through improvisation during the piece’s development, raises questions about who is leading and who is following, revealing a dialogue between music and movement, movement and sound, sound and space, space and sculpture, sculpture and body, body and instrument, cello and cellist, cellist and dancer, and ultimately a man and a woman.

The New York Times bestselling author of The Westies and Paddy Whacked T.J. English joins IAC to share an intimate view of the world of organized crime and law enforcement with his new book Where the Bodies Were Buried: Whitey Bulger and the World That Made Him.
Where the Bodies Were Buried offers a startlingly revisionist account of Bulger’s story—and of the decades-long culture of collusion between the Feds and the Irish and Italian mob factions that have ruled New England since the 1970s, when a fateful deal left the FBI fatally compromised.
T.J. English is the greatest chronicler of the Irish mob in America, and covered Whitey Bulger’s 2015 trial at close range—by day in the courtroom, but also, on nights and weekends, interviewing Bulger’s associates as well as lawyers, former federal agents, and even members of the jury in the backyards and barrooms of Whitey’s world. As complex, harrowing, and human as a Scorsese film,
T.J. English is the New York Times bestselling author of Havana Nocturne, Paddy Whacked, The Westies, and Born to Kill, which was nominated for an Edgar Award. Lennon becomes a modern Don Quixote in this bold, lyrical, mordant, funny and incredibly rewarding novel. Joseph O’Neill “Questions of culpability and morality abound in O’Neill’s elegant, frequently brilliant, novel.” - THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW
The author of the best-selling and awardwinning Netherland returns to Irish Arts Center to read from his compelling new novel The Dog—a comedic tale of alienation and heartbreak set in the glittering Middle Eastern city of Dubai. Distraught by a breakup with his long-term girlfriend, our unnamed hero leaves New York to take an unusual job in a strange desert metropolis. In Dubai at the height of its self-invention as a futuristic Shangri-la, he struggles with his new position as the “family officer” of the capricious and very rich Batros family. And he struggles, even more helplessly, with the “doghouse,” a seemingly inescapable condition of culpability in which he feels himself constantly trapped—even if he’s just going to the bathroom, or reading e-mail, or scuba diving.
Joseph O’Neill was born in Cork, Ireland, and grew up in Mozambique, South Africa, Iran, Turkey, and Holland. His previous works include the novel Netherland, winner of the 2009 Pen/Faulkner award and the Kerry Fiction Prize, and the non-fiction book Blood-Dark Track. He lives in New York City.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3 | 6:30 PM Artist Talk and Reception FREE
In South of Hy-Brazil, Irish artist Caoimhghin Ó Fraithile showcases exquisite ink drawings on handmade paper, combining text in the Irish language with an imagined topography that refers to the sacred land and seascapes influenced by the hermitage island of Skellig Michael off the coast of Kerry. This ongoing body of work collapses past and present, isolation and socialization, fragility and permanence, and reflects the transient nature of humanity and our place within nature. Caoimhghin grew up in the southwest of Ireland where he received a BA in fine arts at the Limerick College of Art and Design. He then went on to receive a MFA at the University of Missouri and since graduating in 2000 has developed his practice through residencies and exhibitions that have taken him around the globe. He has been awarded the Pollack-Krasner Award, Irish Arts Council and Ealain an Gealtechta project grants and much support from Culture Ireland for his international projects in promoting Irish art and culture abroad.

POST SHOW TALK BACK
$12 general / $10 members
The evening includes a post-show talk back with the director
Directed by Alan Gilsenan | 2015, PG13 We continue to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of W.B. Yeats (on June 13, 1865) with A Vision: A Life of W.B Yeats, a biographical and experimental “film poem” from director Alan Gilsenan (last here with Queen of Paraguay). Using solely the words of Yeats, the film takes the viewer on a cinematic journey into his extraordinary imagination. Gilsenan says, “Beyond the poet’s popular profile and his cultural tourist cachet, little is really known of his complex life, despite having articulated it so completely and so creatively. In so many ways, Yeats dreamt up his life. He fashioned his own majestic screenplay and we are – endlessly – the beneficiaries.” A selection of short films will precede the film.

Education
Meet Our Teachers Carrie Erving is a performing singer, composer, and a Lincoln Center teaching artist. With IAC, Carrie teaches Intro to Irish Singing and the new class for all instruments, Song Ensemble. Originally from Massachusetts, she developed her love of traditional American folk songs while studying voice at Ithaca College, and traveled to Ireland to earn a Master’s degree in Irish Traditional Song from the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick. She currently lives in Brooklyn and performs with her band Ponyhof, and has worked with artists such as Yo-Yo Ma and Will Butler (Arcade Fire). If you were stuck on a desert island, what three items would you have with you? My three closest friends. Might as well be in good company! Where are you from, and how did you end up in New York? I am from a small rural town in southeastern Massachusetts, and my aunt is a jazz musician here in New York. I used to visit her when I was a child, and I was enchanted by the city. I’ve always wanted to live here. After college, I moved to Europe for four years, and got my master’s degree in traditional Irish singing from the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance in Limerick, Ireland. When it was time to move back to the US, I headed straight to NYC! What three musicians, deceased or living, would you like to have dinner with (or play with)? John Lennon, Joni Mitchell, and W.A. Mozart. What other IAC class would you be interested in taking (apart from your own)? I would love to work on my Irish language skills, so that would be at the top of the list. Also fiddle! What advice do you have for aspiring musicians and singers? Travel as much as possible, because it will expand your worldview. Surround yourself with friends and artists who support your work and challenge you to make the best art possible. Work hard, stay positive, and be kind to everyone.

“We must look ahead to the next 100 years and ask ourselves how we will sustain Ireland and Irish America’s evolving story and incredible cultural legacy. How are we ensuring that we give voice to the next Wilde, Synge, Joyce, or Heaney; provide a stage for the next Beckett, O’Neill, or O’Rowe to emerge; offer a platform for artistic innovators like Hayes, Cahill, and Ó Raghallaigh; and create the home for future generations to come together and celebrate their heritage?” - GABRIEL BYRNE
An exclusive group of patrons who are invested in promoting and preserving the rich cultural heritage of Ireland and Irish America. Claddagh Circle members provide critical support for the Center’s acclaimed programming and enjoy special program recognition opportunities and invitations to intimate, exclusive events.
