What did we do? For this story, I asked students in grades 3-12 to fill out a form about the lunch-service in ISG Jubail, and to rate it on a 1-10 scale. Mr. Brooks's IB Math Applications and Interpretations class also gathered survey data about the lunch service at ISG Jubail.

Did the day of the event reflect your own vision of how you pictured JJO to be like? Mr. McLean: "Yes, up until a point ... I loved the way that the students were representing the different teams and that every single house got their chant together. I liked the way in which people were supporting each other. I liked seeing the middle school and high school students interacting. I liked seeing the energy and the enthusiasm ... The only messy part was the last event. I think that's something to learn for next time."

Hong Kong Pr ot est sTroy Tate, Protests in Hong Kong started in June because they wanted to leave China and become their own country. According to bbc.com, "Until 1997, Hong Kong was ruled by Britain as a colony but then returned to China. Under the "one country, two systems" arrangement, it has more autonomy than the mainland, and its people more rights." With these protests still going on, we interviewed students here at ISGJ to see what they had to say about current situation in Hong Kong.

Do you think you are ready f or MS? Probably. I'm not entirely sure though. Though I feel secure and ready for Middle School next year. With the new stress upcoming, I can handle it.
How do you think MS will be dif f erent f rom ES?
Zahraa Z. Grade 5A
With classes spread throughout the school, transitions between classes will be different as you have a few minutes to get to your classroom. While in Elementary, it takes a few seconds. Lockers will also be different as they may be more secure than cubbies, so an advantage for that (Except when you forget your locker code). There

are going to be many teachers as well as you don't stay in homeroom as long as we do in Elementary.
What do you think your MS experience will be like next year? Why? My MSexperience may go well for me as now I am more mature than my past years in ISG. I'm going to be able to focus more often, be responsible and respectful, and become a role model for next year's fifth graders. As for now, things are going well enough. Grade Six here I come!
? Preparing supplies. ? Being more responsible. ? Being more respectful to teachers and other students.
What do you think your MS experience will be like next year? Why? Very challenging with all the transitions and hard work.
MSwill have a lot of transitions for every class, the work will be more difficult, but my favourite part is the lockers.
? Not yet.
Ruben P. Grade 5B How is your MS experience so f ar? It's been a fun experience because I get to collaborate with my friends more, and it has been a bit challenging because there are a lot of assignments that I need to complete on time.
How is MS dif f erent f rom ES?
What are your do?s and don?ts f or 6th grade? Do come prepared to class everyday, do keep all your notebooks and papers organized, do try to do your best to work, do read 20 minutes or more a day, and do work hard and study.
Transitioning between classes, having more responsibility, and having a laptop as a TOOL to learn.
Don't prepare projects last minute, don't be afraid to ask questions to the teachers, don't get off task, don't be late for class because you might miss important information, and don't interrupt the teacher while he/she is talking.

Collectingservicehourswasn?t broken, so why did we "fix" it with CAS? By Jon Netzler "Nobody?s reading this. So why do I care?" This might be what you legitimately ask yourself as you maniacally type dozens of ?reflections? into a user-unfriendly learning management system like Managebac or Kognity. Typing an unspecified number of reflections (that someone somewhere might someday read) will be how you meet your CASrequirements. Did I mention? You 100% MUST meet CAS requirements in order to earn the IB diploma: CASis in The Core. The time-suck of documentation is the biggest reason CAS fails as a graduation requirement. Whereas the school?s previous graduation requirement to earn 10 service hours per year cleanly accomplished its main objective (ostensibly, to encourage students to be well-rounded and service-oriented), the CAS system needlessly complicates this main
objective, and it?s not clear whether CAS provides a justifiably significant return on the amount of time it requires students to invest. True, I'm writing this just for the sake of argument, but it's hard to argue with the legitimate concerns
" Ser vice h ou r s w as easier ." - Ayesha A., grade 11 of the students being asked to jump through CAShoops. Take Yelva (gr. 11), whose older sister, Richa (gr. 12), tells her scary but true stories about CAS. "My sister said the more you do, the better it is ... You don't know what the 'more' is," said Yelva. This lack of crystal clarity of expectations for CAS is the
second-biggest reason CASfails as a graduation requirement. Alas, completing service hours was a relatively straightforward process: find and engage in helpful service activities for a total of 10 hours in each grade 9-12. Now, students struggle just to understand exactly what is required to satisfy CAS requirements at an ?A? level. It?s complicated, and again, it?s not clear that the complexities of CAS result in graduating students who are more-well-rounded. What if the result of the complicated, time-consuming, frustrating CAS system is to dilute students? effectiveness in other, arguably more important areas--like academics? Should we just accept that CAS is better because it?s part of IB? Or can we legitimately criticize deficiencies of CAS? Documenting service hours worked just fine. And as my dad used to say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

to you and you try to make an impact through your passion. One main flaw in service hours is that most people do it because they want to finish those 10 hours and they're done
Now how does CAS compare to service hours which preceded it? Well you could say that CAS requires you to show initiative, demonstrate perseverance, collaborate, problem solve, and make important decisions. Instead of counting off every hour when you do service hours so that you can just get it done, in CAS you specifically choose something which is important
and there's no actual inspiration coming from that service. Because of the lack of passion and determination in service hours, it leads to a smaller impact than CAS for our community. For example, in her freshman year, Mena Hassan (gr. 11) babysat for 10 hours straight. Now how does that majorly benefit our community? It doesn't. This

So far this year, our school has had 4 sports seasons going on (table tennis, soccer, volleyball, and basketball). In the first 3 months. Each sport requires at least a month of practice and usually it needs to be more than that to make effective progress for the tournament. Usually in our school's previours years, the sports seasons have been more spread out and we had more time to train. Volleyball was in the beginning of the year. Soccer was in the middle. Basketball was toward the end. What's with this change all of a sudden? This schedule had already been created by the ISG district before school started. Some might even call it an inconvenience. There has been a compression of practices for sports which results in shorter time to practice and that could affect the team's performance at the tournament. Playing multiple sports could also negatively affect a student's academics; especially if they're doing IB which is very rigorous to say the least. The reason for this is mainly due to Ramadan because it has been moved back by a few weeks. which pushes basketball's practice sessions to start in the first semester. Now how can we improve this? Since Ramadan will be pushed back even further next year, basketball and badminton can start in the 2nd semester. Hopefully Mrs. Crudas and the ISG district can improve this schedule and make it more convenient for teachers as well for our next school year. Right now, we'll just have to stick with this one.

Message from Mr s. Brooks
Mrs. Sarah Brooks is the ISG Jubail grade 7-12 counselor and the college counselor. She mentioned that:
She said that while she didn't think she was an expert on stress, she thought that everyone learns from and about stress everyday.
"I think unfortunately there are many students that feel uncomfortable coming and seeing a counselor in any situation at any time. I try to be open and be available and when students come to me, I want them to know that this is a safe place. And I always talk about when they come in the only things that have to go out of my office is if you are telling me that you are going to cause harm to yourself or cause harm to others.?
"?I don?t think I?m an expert, I think we are learning new things about stress and what demands are on students. It's Something that everyone has in their life. It?s how you deal with it and what strategies you have to cope with it and that is how you can work in a healthy way through stress. I would say when people ignore stress or push things or let it overtake their life that's when it can get out of hand and can affect other things. It is important to recognize and then have strategies dealing with it moving forward in your life, helping you de-stress.?

In- Depth
Message from Ms. Lover idge On November 20th, we went to interview Ms. Loveridge. We wanted to interview her because she is a trained counselor and a suicide-prevention counselor. Ms. Loveridge worked for Samaritans UK, a registered charity that aims to help people emotionally throughout their telephone helpline in the U.K. and Ireland, in their Board of Governors in Manchester, UK. During our interview, she told us about how compassion is essential as we grow and that there is a stigma behind mental illness. ?An important part of growing up is learning that compassion is not just compassion s el for others; compassion f -c mpa for others is essential for the survival oof our s s i planet on because we need each other. We also need to understand that mental health and well-being is essential to having a healthy life. If we have kids who are secretly depressed and not feeling safe to say ?I am depressed,?then they feel stigmatized because they feel like they cannot admit that they have got some stress creeping into them called ?mental illness.?When we think of the word ?mental illness,?people think you?re psychotic, you?re schizophrenic or a diagnosable mental illness, but depression is a continuum, so you can have mild depression, you can have clinical depression...the more we talk about it, learn about it, and read about it, the more
"Ms. Loveridge has also taken an interest in mindfulness. For a while, she has offered mindfulness meditation to her drama students and any other students who feel they need it. Not many people know what mindfulness or mindful self-compassion so Ms. Loveridge offered some helpful information. Mindful self-compassion is about recognizing and noticing that you are stressed, the second part of that is acknowledging that everybody suffers, that everybody has experience of these things. The third thing is learning to develop resilience by understanding a straightforward thing: if you sit with your feelings, most of us want to push them away, most of us want to fix out pain, but actually, it may be part of what may be causing our stress. So, the biggest lesson is the ?power of literally going still.? The power of learning to develop a strength of just acknowledging your pain and not beating yourself up. It is normal to suffer.? Kristin Neff?s website: https://self-compassion.org/category/exercises/
How to Cope with Stress When you?re feeling stressed you need to take some me-time so you don?t lose yourself in your stress and work. Have a cup of tea, invite your friend for a walk, or simply read a book. It doesn?t matter what you do, as long as you feel comfortable doing it.
Sometimes an assignment can feel like a lot of weight on your back. After stressing on work for a while you need to take a break. Stretching, having a snack, listen to music, or move to a smaller project. Taking breaks increases your productivity and refreshes you brain, which allows your brain to be more creative. Asking for help is the best way to understand where your stress is coming from. Going to a counselor, talking to a parent, or trusted adult is a normal reaction to a considerable amount of work to do. You can ask for an extension or advice on what to change in your work.
Note from the Jour nalism Staff Stress is temporary. Everyone goes through it, and they will have different ways to cope. So don?t be afraid to talk with someone about it. Everyone will have times that are hard to cope with. The important thing is to find someone to talk to that you trust. While it may seem bad, there are many different ways to help get rid of it, so don't lose hope! Remember what The Beatles said "Love is all you need."

Sustainability: What Bottle is Best? Comparing reusable water bottles; highlighting strengths and weaknesses of each. With 42.6 billion plastic water bottles being purchased in the United States and over 500 million being purchased worldwide (sites.psu.edu), plastic is one of the biggest pollutants found in our oceans and our environments. Global warming and the exhaustion of natural resources are becoming ever-growing problems in society, and it is crucial that we take a stand against pollution and realize how important it is that we

figure out how to become more sustainable. Between 5 million and 13 million tonnes of plastic end up in our world's oceans every year, killing seas birds, fish, turtles, and other living organisms. By switching to a reusable water bottle, one person can prevent 217 plastic bottles from going into a landfill, and possibly into an ocean, that year. Not only will they be saving the lives of several innocent sea turtles or fish, but they will also be saving Glass bottles, while they may be a better looking option, also have their cons. First of all, producing glass bottles produces roughly the same carbon emissions of producing one everyday plastic bottle. Also, for its carbon footprint, glass bottles have an especially low life cycle. It also goes without saying that you can easily break these bottles, making it potentially more dangerous to carry around in public spaces. Aluminum bottles, while they can be confused with stainless steel, are very different. Aluminum is reactive with acidic liquids, such as any soda or fizzy drink. So, to prevent damage to the aluminum itself, it is lined with a special type of epoxy. Sometimes, this epoxy contains an ingredient, BPA, that has been labeled as dangerous due to its connection to cancer in several lab tests. Also, aluminum can dent if dropped. This should be your last resort when it comes to choosing a water
our planet Earth. For most people, simply switching to a reusable water bottle will be enough for them to be satisfied with their efforts towards being sustainable. While this does make a great dent in the amount of plastic produced, the type of water bottle you switch to, glass, stainless steel, aluminum, etc., can make a big difference when it comes to how effective your switch from plastic to reusable can be. So, which bottle is, in fact, most bottle. Stainless steel, one of the most popular of the options for a reusable water bottle, also has its downsides. Firstly, steel is made up of natural resources, non-renewable ones. Mining for metals can greatly affect an ecosystem, polluting the air and the environment around the site, and it also depletes several natural resources and fuel sources. Also, producing steel is very energy intensive. On the other hand, stainless steel is durable, long lasting, and 100% recyclable. When recycled, steel can be separated into individual components, and they can all be reused (drkarenslee.com). We asked a student here at ISG Jubail, Sundus I., about what she thought about whether or not sustainability was important to her. "Without sustainability the human race will not be able to survive on this Earth much longer. I think it should be important to everyone because not only does it
by Jackson B. effective after all?
Plastic Bottles Photo Credits: forbes.com effect us human beings but also the other living species." We also interviewed Ms. Hellman, a middle school environmental science teacher here at ISG Jubail about her take on sustainability as a whole. "I just reuse water bottles [plastic bottles] and I have them there for students and I discourage them to go and invest their one riyal to buy more." Mrs. Hellman said the reason she reuses the bottles is to limit the her plastic waste production so she can be more environmentally friendly. She also said she is aware of the possible long-term health-related issues that go along with reusing the plastic bottles, and she said she thinks she should make the switch to a stainless steel or some other kind of reusable bottle. I asked if she would recommend a reusable water to someone else, and she replied, "Probably yes, because I am aware there is long term effects."

10 Year s at ISGJ By: Claudia K. As we approach 2020 we must look back on our school?s history because it is important to realize where we started. For some of us, ISG is a second home. We have been at this school since we were young children struggling to find our place to fit in. In the many years that ISG has existed, we have had many annual activities that have been forgotten and left with the teachers that coordinated them. During our semester in journalism, we have noticed the physical changes of ISG
Jubail. In this story, we interviewed people who have been at this school throughout the years.
READ - A - THON On Saturday November 16th I interviewed a 10th grade student who has been at this school for 11 years. When I asked her about the different activities that have been forgotten over the years, she reminded me about the Read - A - Thon.
Although the Read A -Thon is a well remembered event, another event that students would participate in is D.E.A.R. D.E.A.R. was a very rare occurrence, but when we were told about it making its rare appearance, we were elated.

why I chosethis topic I chose this topic because I felt that this school needs more outdoor type sports because in my past schools, there were multiple outdoor sports such as Rugby, Hockey, and athletics. I wanted to get opinions from other people to find out if they also want other outdoor sports added to the school and what was their opinion on teaching other students about sports.
It's good for us to de-stress... good to balance our moods I find sports education very important because students use it has an exit to their daily routines and responsibilities, and they could just relax and release stress.

Photo of Troy Tate When asked about doing sports inside of school, Troy Tate made this statement: "I think it's important because it's fun and keeps you healthy." I then asked him if it is important for students to do sports inside school, and Troy said: "Yeah of course, if they don't they're gonna get lazy... not motivated." Here Troy said that by doing sports, students are more motivated and less lazy. I then asked if there should be more outdoor type sports in ISGJand which ones, Troy then said this: "Yeah for sure... American Football, Rugby, Lacrosse, Hockey.. pretty good sports that I like." In this interview I found that from a student's point of view, sports education and activities are important, and that maybe our school should include more outdoor sports.

Photo of Mr. Kern Cruddas When an interview took place with Mr. Kern the PE teacher on his thoughts about sports and the education of sports. This is what he said. "I think it's very important for development of students... all students should have access to sports education... gives us the mobility to learn about ourselves as individuals... other people provides us with knowledge... to be involved with fun and competitive social settings" I asked Mr. Kern if it's important to have students do sports, and he said this. "Yeah... it's good for us to de-stress as well, it's good to balance our moods... especially with exams... everyone has a stressful day... and the ability to go and play and get involved with sports and be social and make new friends is great for your development... it's a good release. It's good for students to build their confidence...
learn about their strengths and weaknesses... being in an environment where they don't feel critically criticized. Then go away and look at their strengths and weaknesses and develop their weaknesses without the fear of judgment. when they leave school and go on further in life, they are able to socialize. Taking part in sports in schools... gonna give students the confidence to go out in the world and say "what we got, what I'm interested in, soccer club, great, soccer club let's go". Sports and activities in school is important... that students build confidence and self esteem. I then asked if we should include more outdoor sports in ISG like Rugby or hockey, Mr. Kern said this. "The more the better... would be awesome to have greater variety of sports and outdoor activities... SAIKAC tournament which only has a select number of sports. I'd love to see Rugby as a SAIKAC sport to be honest or to get a pool because I love swimming as well."

V ol l ey ba l l By: Khal id T. The volleyball season recently came to an end after about 2 months of hard work from the coach and the athletes. There were 6 volleyball teams for ISG Jubail this year. A U14, U16, and U19 team each for boys and girls. The teams did great in SAIKAC this year, and here is what the coach, Mrs. Holly, and one of the athletes, Nathan Serfontein, had to say about this year's volleyball season.
Valeria O., Grade 10, sets Adriana C., Grade 11, up f or a spike in U19 girls volleyball SAIKAC. Q - How well do you think the volleyball teams did in SAIKAC? A - I think given the time frame that we had and the fact that I didn't get the information for the DPSL, so they didn't have the practice games before it, they did really well. They exceeded my expectations. I think there's a lot to learn from this season and to take for next year. I'm excited about next year already. Q - What was the most important thing f or the teams? A - I think the fact that everyone loves volleyball so much and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Our practices always had a high energy about them. Everyone enjoyed playing together and that was apparent when we were at the tournaments. Everyone was there because they loved volleyball. Q - What could be done better f or next year's volleyball season? A - I think preparation and knowing everyone as players is very improtant. When we started this season, I had just met everyone, so it was hard to know how different people operate. Knowing how players operate during games, I think, is going to be really helpful for next season. I think just seeing the level of Photo Credits: Mrs.Holly competition at SAIKAC and being able to prepare for that and knowing what's Mrs. Holly, Volleyball Coach coming. Q - How well do you think the volleyball teams did in SAIKAC?
A - I think we proved ourselves wrong. We didn't expect to do as good as we did. I think the first day we didn't do our best, but on the second day we did much better. There were many things that we could have do better, but I think in that point in time, we played the best we could. Q - What was the most important thing f or the teams? A - Basically, just working together way a key factor on playing better. Getting to know each other better and getting used to each others' playing style helped us build chemistry as a team. That was our strongest point during SAIKAC. Also, the team's fitness was very important. During SAIKAC, we had to play game after game, so we needed really good stamina to keep playing our best. Q - What could be done better f or next year's volleyball season? A - I think the season should start slightly earlier next year. This season, we didn't have much time to practice because the season was very short. Also, I would like to get some practice matches against other teams before going to SAIKAC. Lastly, I think next year, the team could focus some more on fitness.

The Gr eat Wall Food Review By: Ar r on B., Khal id T., Jackson B.
The Great Wall Restaurant is a Chinese restaurant that offers quality Chinese cuisine at an affordable price. They have an excellent variety of dishes, from which almost everyone can find something that they'll love. The restaurant had a good atmosphere, with friendly wait staff that were smiling and ready to serve you. In this review we will be rating taste, service, cleanliness, location, and price all while providing an in-depth review of the whole experience.

The food at the Great Wall one of the most authentic Chinese restaurants we've been to. The cleanliness was moderate but not the best. The chicken sizzler was served steaming on a foil platter and was extremely delicious because of the rich flavors in the chicken. The spicy chicken wasn't that spicy but it was really sweet. They served non-alcoholic Saudi champagne but it suspiciously tasted a lot like apple juice. There was some miscommunication with the waiters but that didn't really affect our experience there. Jackson's sweet and sour chicken was the best dish out of all the main courses because it was spicy and the juicy flavors were extremely delicious. The egg and garlic fried rice was very well cooked and complimented the main courses really well. Overall, the price was definitely worth the food and was very authentic and delicious. The location was kind of hard to find because it was in a random corner of a block. We definitely recommend this restaurant to everyone!
Arron B. on the Chicken Sizzler: "That was some pretty yummy chicken." Jackson B. on the Sweet and Sour Chicken: "Great flavor. The pineapple added some great sweet and acidic notes to the dish. Would recommend." Khalid T. on the Spicy Chicken: "The chicken was very well cooked, but my soup wasn't the best since it was really watery and it was way too spicy.

The Last of Us never lets drops in quality and the story occur, and dialogue between the characters never strays much from the games law. The writing in this game involves only interactions between characters, which promotes realism. Similarly, the disease generating the zombies is based on a real fungus that takes over the minds of ants. This small detail makes the game that much more believable, making it more immersive. Zombie games aren't for everyone though as they can be stressful to play, similar to horror movies.
Nuisances that break immersion can also occur, for example the AI, which can be buggy at times and dumbs down combat (though this only occurs on set levels). Overall, combat is not very developed as similar titles, which is a real shame since most other aspects of the game are brilliant.

The amount of times a player will pick up the same weapons only for them to break straight after (apart from the limited variety of guns) isn't a very gripping experience, and it can get repetitive fast, but on the other hand, the game lets the player finish a stage in whichever way they want, which we think can somewhat make up for the lack of depth in the combat.
Gameplay isn't the most interesting aspect of this game by a landslide. Things such as enemy variety and stealth are fun and don't need any improvement, but weapon variety and upgrade

JoJo's Hamon Adventure By Pedro S. and Ammar H.

Vampires, sun powered martial arts and a great cast of characters makes Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Season 1 a very unique yet hilarious show.
George Joestar. After a series of unfortunate events seven years later involving a strange artifact, the stone mask, Jonathan, aka Jojo, must master the power of hamon, a breathing technique capable of supercharging the blood of a person, making them able to do incredible things. Hamon is the main power source in the series, being the only weapon to defeat vampires and the three pillar men (the main antagonists in part 2).
Season 1 is split into two parts, with each part having their own unique main character/variation of Jojo (we'll get into that later). Jojo's Bizarre Adventure also happens to fall into the Japanese Animation Genre (aka anime). We suggest that you watch the subtitled A good thing about Jonathan's version for the best viewing arc is it's only 8 episodes long, so experience. the story doesn't drag on. This show is one of a The overall story arc for Jonathan's "kind... all the memes..." this part of the first Arc season serves as a prequel -Andres Siblesz rather than an actual The first part series. he can be serious but is also very funny." At first, his character is very self centered, but he soon evolves into a more caring and empathetic person.
A small detail with the animation in the first part is that the visuals can vary. For example, at one point a character's resolution (clarity) can be really high but when switching to another scene the resolution often drops. It is very noticeable too which makes it an eyesore for people who enjoy consistent animation quality. Aside from that, the animation is above average for the year (2012).
One thing that is constant, in the second part is Joseph's comedy, which remains throughout all the episodes and the future seasons he is in. His personality is a refreshing change of pace in the series, and provides a lot more room for comedy instead of the constant drama of the first part with Jonathan. Returning characters are also present, such as Erina and Speedwagon. This part explores the origins of the aforementioned stone masks and their creators: the pillar men.
Another thing, which relates to the characters, is how exaggerated they are. This is not necessarily a bad thing because it sometimes sprinkles in some comedic relief. However, during pivotal moments in the plot, it may ruin the mood a scene taking place.
This part is remembered for its humor and memorable characters and sound tracks (which were made into memes). Hamon is also used with more versatility in this part, which makes action sequences more exciting.
Joseph's Arc
A con to this part, however, is how confusing Hamon is. The concept itself and it's mechanics aren't very believable. But overall, this part is better than the first.
The second half of season one tells the story of Jonathan's grandson, Joseph Joestar (aka Jojo). This part is longer, so naturally, Joeseph's personality is much more fleshed out. According to Joshku Gauntlet, Year 11 (WSO Dubai), "Joeseph Joestar is an amazing character as
