M on t h ly Pan dem ic Repor t A form was sent out to the students and staff of ISG Jubail. The form asked questions about how the pandemic has affected the students and staff, their families, the ISG Jubail community and the whole world. There were many interesting responses, some are shown below. Page don e by Umer Yahya and Taha. Pict u r es by 2018/ 2019 Yearbook.

"I feel really sad as we are leaving this year and I'd love to be back face to face to see all the people we have come to know over the years we have been here." - Emma Ahmed, Staff at ISG Jubail.

"One of my third grade students recently said this in a group discussion: 'I want to feel grateful for what we have. Even though I don?t like homeschooling, we are still lucky that we get to meet online and talk to our teachers and friends.' I feel the exact same way. " - Caitlin Wingers, Staff at ISG Jubail.

"Since I like to cloister at home and read, the pandemic has afforded me ample time to engage in my wonderful hobby. I miss being at school with the students, but I am trying to make a positive spin on what has been a surreal school year." - Neal Bourn, Staff at ISG Jubail.

"I understand and appreciate that Saudi is trying to keep its residents and citizens safe and I respect that. A year is a long time to not have any in-person learning, but we are trying to do our best virtual and every week is an improvement on reaching and connecting with our students through the screen." - Tammy Nimmer, Staff at ISG Jubail.

4 JANUARY - FEBRUARY, 2021

Dr . An dr ew Cr ou se, Head of Sch ool - em ail f r om Jan . 17, 2021 "I am sure that you have also heard the recent news concerning Saudi schools continuing virtually for at least another ten weeks. We have not had any news about a possible exception for us, but neither has there been any tightening of the existing regulations due to the international circulation of new virus variants. So, we will be working with our colleagues at the other ISG schools to begin to provide more students periodic opportunities to come to school physically within the government regulations. In response to urgent needs such as exams or laboratory work, we have already been doing this on a small scale in MSHS. Look for an expansion of these opportunities in the future."

- Leila Bessalah, grade 10 student.

How h as t h e pan dem ic af f ect ed you ? Please explain . "Honestly, I am blessed to still be alive. Many people have lost their loved ones due to COVID and I am thankful none of my immediate family have been affected negatively. However, one of my moms family lost their lives to it. "

- Zafir Ali, Grade 10 student.

How do you f eel abou t t h e vaccin es? Ar e you goin g t o t ak e t h e vaccin es t h at ar e ou t ? "Of course, I'm going to take the vaccines, but only when they are fully tested, and don't cause side effects to the human body. "

How do you f eel abou t n o sch ool pot en t ially f or t h e r est of t h e year ?

"It's really annoying for some subjects like art, but we've all gotten pretty used to it so it going on for a while longer wouldn't affect us too much."

It's extremely disappointing. Although, if students and staff aren't vaccinated then I know it's for the best.

SYED QADRI, GRADE 7 - DRAMA STUDENT ?After we got back from holiday, the drama teacher started talking about politics and the current situation in the U.S.A. The teacher talked about the current president's actions and how his actions are bad. She told us that the police aren't doing their jobs well too. Not really drama but the teacher is trying to get the news out I guess.? Having classes online is already a huge challenge, but having performing arts classes online? Now, that is challenging. Students in performing arts classes have been working quite hard this semester trying to learn their instruments, creating amazing pieces of artwork, and plays. All of that, online!

"The Humans" performance by Drama 9/10 students.

LEILA BESSALAH, GRADE 10 - DRAMA STUDENT ?We are performing ?The Humans? in a group and it?s going pretty well and smooth. At first acting on zoom was really difficult. We were not used to acting without using our whole bodies and having human interaction with other actors. But now it is much more easier and certainly has its advantages like using the camera and background.?

ASMA SHELTAMI GRADE 10 - ART STUDENT

Art work by Umer Yahya, grade 10.

?Before winter break we discussed prehistoric architecture. We also made 3 art pieces out of it. After we completed that unit we went straight to free choice art. Everyone created their own pieces out of their imagination or maybe found something online and switched it up a bit. That artwork was due last weekend, and we don't have anything to work on, but I am excited to see what awaits for our next art journey.? JANUARY - FEBRUARY, 2021

ARE YOU LEARNING/TEACHING? Are you learning better virtually or physically? By: Asma Sheltami and Leila Bessalah

As Virtual School continues, some students are worried about their academics. ISG Jubail began Virtual School on March 10, 2020. Most staff and students were excited to be given 2 weeks of Spring Break off, but little did they know it would last much longer than they expected. As Virtual School started, some students got worried about their academics. Some students grades started to drop down, and they weren't happy with how they were learning. "At first I didn't adapt to the Virtual School system and my grades started to slip, but eventually I got the hang of it. I would still prefer going to school in real life though, said Lina Abdelhadi, grade 10. Although there are students who struggle with Virtual School, there are those who prefer it. "Virtual school has allowed me to catch up on work because I can work on my own schedule," said Reine Fawaz, grade 10.

According to Research From 52 responses from teachers and students

56.5% of people prefer physical school better

-

30.5%

-

of people prefer online school better

13.0% of people are fine with any Some advantages of online learning are people have been performing better than with face-to-face instruction. Since students have more time to study and get organized, they can also make contact with other studentsthat they wouldn't talk to in physical school. Some disadvantages are teachers need to switch technology and their teachingmethods. Students also struggle with their organization methods and staying focused in zoom calls.

-

-

Create an organized routine Take care of your mental health Try to set time limits on screen Try exercising Socialize with peers Take on the role of the "encourager" Stay connected

Expecting school to be the same Focusing on your grades more than your health. Not asking for help when needed Not taking care of yourself Being lazy Not getting enough sleep Stressing too much Skipping video lessons Not taking your learning seriously

10 JANUARY - FEBRUARY, 2021

ISG JUBAIL Student's Response: Are you learning better in online or physical school? It is hard to communicate with your teachers and your education is not the same. I especially find it embarrassing for some reason in math class when our teacher asks us a question and says to put our answer in the group chat. I am always scared that I get it wrong and other people will see it. Another thing is they give us to much work. In Arabic every single class we have a new test. I have progressed amazingly though and now am able to speak, read and understand. " Sophia Ben Hamida, Grade 6

What is M r. Ritchie's response to Sophia? "Keep in mind that learning is a process, and it is okay not to have all the right answers. In fact, we learn best when we make mistakes and learn from those. Communication, especially in a virtual environment, is nothing to fear; teachers are eager to help."

ISG JUBAIL Teacher's Response: Are you teaching better in online or physical school? Teaching physically and virtually each have their advantages. I have found that virtually can benefit student learning through use of breakout rooms and technology. But, nothing can beat physical learning. We need community, and a virtual environment makes it hard to feel a part of the larger ISG community." Mr. Ritchie, Teacher

What is Sophia's response to M r. Ritchie? M "In order for our learning to be better, teachers should move all the work to one website. To many teachers are using multiple websites, they should all stick to google classroom and assign worksheets there. Students get confused on where to find the work and when they do its too late."
