Where did Spirit Week go? Compiled by Nathan & Vicky

Spirit week is a week for students and teachers at ISG Jubail to participate in all kinds of activities such as coming to school dressed up or participating in activities relating to school spirit while still attending a normal school day. In the past spirit weeks we?ve had Black and Gold day; to represent our school colors, International Day; for everyone to express their culture and the country they come from, Crazy Hair Day; to express creativity, Earth Day; to show support for environmental issues, and Pajama Day; to relax for the day and be comfortable. School spirit is important because people coming together and celebrating who we are and what we do is part of building our community and new relationships. When it comes to spirit week it forms a sort of union between the people who participate, makes everyone feel a part of something, and makes everyone value what they?re working towards. As Mr. Wingers said, ?I think spirit week targets some of the things that you don?t get a chance to focus on in classes. Classes often times are academically focused and an

event of spirit week can support some of the other aspects of education and development.? SAIKACis a good example of school and team spirit, if a team has school spirit then the competition often means more to them and there is more motivation for first place than just going for the sake of going. According to Mrs. Cruddas school spirit will not only bring the school together as a whole but allow us to do better when competing with other schools. This year ISG Jubail hosted their first Jaguar Jump off, consisting of 4 teams going head to head in all sorts of activities, games and sports to boost school spirit. According to Mr. Wingers the Jaguar Jump Off served as the spirit week in the first semester, although it was not explicitly labeled as spirit week, the school definitely connected with the philosophy and purpose of the week.

"Spirit week has changed a lot through the years. Not many people do it. You will see 10 people do it but others don't care. This year there was no Pajama day many people enjoy doing that because you get to come to school with your PJ. I heard my people say that they wish that there was pj day because they enjoy it. I wish spirit week was the same as it was the same before." - Karmen Zwiegelaar, G9 "Since I was in elementary, I've always enjoyed dressing up during spirit week, especially the pajama day ones, and also international day because it's cool to see all the different cultural background everyone has in the school, It's such an amazing experience that I'm fortunate to experience every year."

- John Almudin, G10

"It was white day, so black day." - Abdul Rafay Tahir, G7 "Spirit week is a fun way to interact with all my friends in a different way." - Anika Aharwal, G9 "I liked spirit week because we could come together as a community and build friendships." - Betzabeth Rodriguez, G9 "I like spirit week because it adds excitement to our daily school routine and gives us a small rest from stressing about school work, dead lines, and summative assessments." - Ahmed Ben Amor, G8

WOW Week Recap Compiled by Nathan & Vicky

What happened in this years WOW Week? Local WOW week activities consisted of : The local week without wall consists of a bunch of activities to those students who did not take part the international trips. The local week without walls 2020 has been an amazing experience for students. The activities for this year are seen on the left. Students participated in 2 activities a day, which consisted of 3 hour long sessions with a 15 min break in the middle. This years week without walls has been a great improvement to that of last year and showed a great range of activities.

International WOW week:

When is the best time f or WOW Week? In previous years week without walls trips as well as activities has been held in November although this year and last year the school held it in the first week of February. Majority of the students as well as teachers preferred WOW week to be held in February over November. For students the week was exactly what they needed after a stressful week of exams although this week was also just as appreciated by the hardworking teachers at ISG Jubail. Some even said that already having the November break allows February's WOW week to fit in perfectly after the end of the first semester.

Word in the Hall " Wh er e t o go n ext year ?" "French Polynesia" - Ahmad Bin Tamrin

Most people suggested that for next year the trip should be located in Europe. The trips that have - Dylan Badenhorst previously gone out to Europe such as Portugal, Ireland, Italy, France and Switzerland have been "France, specif ically Paris" successful and have only had good feedback. "Spain" - Eoin Bourn Students also suggested that we should have more options to choose from as not many people were - Jackson Bateman interested in Cambodia.

"Amsterdam or Australia"

What did you enjoy the most?

9

Students really enjoyed the outside of school activities because you get to go "outside the walls" and since the horse riding was a new activity that was proposed this year a lot of people were interested. The fishing was also one of the most talked about because a student (Zain Naqvi 9th grader) caught the first fish. People suggested that going out of Jubail for a day should become an activity, like a day to Dhahran Mall, going to a museum or even going to the movie theaters.

Pakistan For the past two decades, Pakistan has been thwarted by Taliban and Terrorism. In recent news, with ongoing trips from tourists to the nation, the world's eyes are opening up to the impeccable nature, culture and hospitality of Pakistan. Pakistan is extremely cheap, an example of this is in the U.S, a pair of Levi's jeans cost ~$100. However, in Pakistan they cost around ~$30 USD due to the massive industry of cotton they have. The landscape of Pakistan will have you in awe as it consists of desert forests and snow capped mountains along with breath-taking valleys. Pakistan has a rich history of its past as well. The nation of Pakistan is filled with color and liveliness. You might see the colorful trucks traveling on the road K- 2 is the second tallest peak at filled with inspirational poetry.

U n d er st an d i n g Sp i r i t at O u r Sch o o l Around these walls our school has seen the lack of spirit and motivation students have, the only time it has been showed that our school is united is during jaguar jump off and the student vs. teacher events. This is fault to multiple things. One being the fact that the students sports games are not public, another thing is that students have requested new after school activities and have been seemingly forgotten about. So is it the students that are not inspired by their school or is it the staff who have failed to inspire the students? Students have shown that they can organize themselves towards a common goal when they have that push to get started so why isn't there more events for different in school teams to play against themselves even though it'll earn money for the school with food and raise moral for the students.

Do you think our school lacks school spirit? "Yes I would say so, first I think there's a lack of opportunity to show school spirit, so systematically we don't really encourage it or promote it. Because of this I don't think our students really know what." Mr. Brooks

How can w e f ix t h is? "I think we can fix that by having more community events where we work in groups or teams against ourselves, I think this would make us work better together." Th e Ri ppl e Ef f ect: Wh y A re Th ere Few er BY: HANA HASSAN Teach ers Ev ery Year? Being at ISG Jubail for 5 years has made me notice a pattern of decreasing teachers every year. This causes things such as combined foreign language classes, and one semester-elective choice. Having more choices for electives is important since it?s one of the classes where we can explore our interests and discover new hobbies. I?d find it interesting to have hands-on electives, like woodworking or cooking. Nevertheless, fewer teachers is a result of a ripple effect through the school. After interviewing Mr. Ritchie and Mr. Wingers on why the number of teachers decreases every year, I have concluded that everything depends on the amount of students enrolled. Having more students causes a need for more teachers and resources VShaving less students. Furthermore, here are a couple graphs showing the trends our school has experienced.

NUMBER OF MS/HS STUDENTS AT ISG JUBAIL OVER THE COURSE OF FIVE YEARS

To the left is a graph showing the clear decrease of students over the past 5 years in MS/HS at ISG Jubail. In 2015-2016, there were 329 students, and today there's 213. In addition, the number of full-time MS/HS teachers employed at ISG Jubail today is 26. In 2015-16, there was 37 MS/HSteachers, showing a decrease of about 11 teachers. However, even with the decrease of students and teachers, the number of MS/HS courses offered at our school increased over the years. In 2015-2016, there were 119 courses, and today there's 136. MR. RITCHIE

MR. WINGERS

Q: Why do you think there are fewer teachers every year at ISG Jubail?

Q: How do you think fewer amounts of teachers affects teachers and students?

A: Everything's a ripple effect and based upon money, and of the fact that we can only hire teachers then based upon what our budget is for the school. When we have fewer teachers, it's because we have fewer students, which means less money in the school. So we're all linked to everyone here.

A: This causes teachers to teach across a broader spectrum of whether that be grade levels or classes. It impacts students because they don't see such a diverse range or a broad range of teachers. They might not necessarily have the range of personalities in teachers. Photo By Yearbook

Q: How do you think fewer amounts of teachers affects teachers and students? A: Having fewer teachers means that we have fewer options to give to the students, or we have to be creative with our solutions. Much of this manifests itself more evidently in high school because you guys have less options to choose from.

Q: What impact do you think an increase/decrease number of students would have on our school? A: You've got to strike the right balance. For us at this moment in time, I think we would benefit from increasing student numbers, not so much that it streams our facilities, but in a way that would offer us a little bit more flexibility and of course, choices for students as well.

I think it?s good that we are a part of it." - Jackson Bateman, U19 Basketball Player. "I enjoy DPSL because we get to compete against other teams before SAIKAC, and can learn which skills to focus on that will help us defeat them."

"The DPSL is mostly fun and we get to learn about how our teammates play."

"The DPSL, one its a great change from not having it, so I'm glad that it exists because before we didn't have these games, so it's great to have the games. It is improving each year so it's good, although I wish that some of the rules were a little different, for example when its a time out the clock should stop. It's tough to organize because it's all in one location with schools coming from different areas, were the furthest away so we feel the pinch of having to drive there the most. At the end of the day it's a good way to get more games and get prepared for the SAIKACtournament, so I'm glad we're doing it and I hope it continues to grow and get better." - Craig Brooks, Basketball Coach.

- Valeria Olivera, U16 Basketball Player . ?I think DPSL has been a very exhilarating experience so far, but we have had a couple of pretty spirit crushing defeats in recent games but hopefully we continue to improve through the rest of the season.?

-Hana Hassan, U16 Basketball Player.

-Yousef Abdelhadi, U19 Basketball Player

?I think its been extremely valuable for teams to get experience before SAIKAC. I think certainly experiencing with the volleyball not having any match play and then going straight to the tournament, it was kind of like three quarters of the way through the tournament before we got into our stride, so I'm excited for how your going to perform at SAIKAC. I think the one concern I do have is the time, especially for the boys having those late finishes for two of those weeks. Students are not missing any classes but I do not know what the knock on effect was to how productive you were the next day, so that's what I'll be looking at, is it worth taking you over to Dhahran for that late mid week.? -Holly Cruddas, Basketball Coach/Athletic Director

?DPSL is a nice addition to the current sports as it adds more chances to play against other teams in the eastern province.? - Terrence Jacob, U19 "I really like the DPSL. It's a great opportunity for us to work and improve as a team and figure out what things work and what don't. Unlike SAIKAC, it is also stretched over a pretty significant period of time which is a lot more convenient and exciting for us players." - Omkar Shetty, U19 Basketball Player. ?I think DPSL is a great way to prepare yourself for the tournament, It?s a great environment to try new thing with your team or by yourself? - Hala Saleh, U16 Basketball Player

?Nice experience to warm you up for basketball and get you in the mind to play, and yeah its good.? -Aidan Bourn, U19 Basketball "I think that the DPSL is a great opportunity for us girls to practice and to know who we are vs in SAIKAC. So far I think that we are trying our best and looking for ways that we can improve. It?s for sure that at the end of this we?ll know what to look for and how to score points in the game. " - Charlize Zwiegelaar, U16 Basketball Player "I think it's a great way for the team to know each other as players in a competitive aspect and they can really practice competitively before SAIKAC.? - Arron Benson, U16 Basketball

"It's good to be exposed to this type of tournament so we know what's coming at us in SAIKAC? -Ahmed Ben Amor, U16 ?The DPSL is fun I guess. It's a really good experience, I'm enjoying it so far as it?s something I haven't done for basketball and it?s a new experience for me so I really enjoy it.? - Karmen Zwiegelaar, U16 Basketball Player.

Review Memes are an essential part of our "culture". They're a way for many people to express thoughts/situations through a laughable manner. The following memes that have been picked out were picked out because they fit with the context of school and are situations that we've likely seen happen. It's easier to make others laugh when they can relate to something. "Memes are a way too express yourself. It's like when something is so serious people find a way to express it, kind of like a coping/stability method. People need a way to cope with a situation and memes are a great to do that"
