“Simply our prayer should be, “My dear Krishna, please remind me to always chant Your holy name, please do not put me into forgetfulness. You are sitting within me as the Supersoul, so You can put me into forgetfulness or into remembering You. So please do not put me into forgetfulness. Please always remind me to chant, even You send me to hell, it doesn’t matter, just so long as I can always chant Hare Krishna.” Srila Prabhupada, Letter to Devananda, 23rd November 1968 5

MAYOR OF LONDON’S REMEMBRANCE DAY SERVICE
MY WESTMINSTER NEWSLETTER DIWALI PRAYER
City Hall annually pays tribute to the servicemen and women who died in active service in the two World Wars. As part of this year’s ceremony, faith representatives were invited to say a short prayer from their own tradition. ISKCON-London (representing the Hindu Forum of Britain) was invited to represent the Hindu faith through a pre-recorded prayer delivered by Jai Nitai dasa. This was relayed into the live stream on the event day, Friday 6th November, and also on the actual day, Wednesday 11th November.
Westminster City Council requested Jai Nitai dasa to prepare a short prayer for Diwali to include in their online newsletter ‘My Westminster’ on Friday 13th November. He shared the following prayer: “May this Diwali offer you hope. May a clear path be lit to guide you out of the darkness. And may you and your loved ones connect with the eternal supreme flame and may the spark of that connection kindle into a deep and everlasting faith that sees you through these troubling times.”

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
In the auspicious month of Kartik, many were feeling the separation from Vrindavana Dhama due to the global pandemic. But in a virtual pushback to the pandemic, ISKCON-London’s Retreat Team hosted a weekend of nectar with online talks centred around the childhood pastimes of Lord Krishna. Held over the weekend of 21st and 22nd November, over 300 attendees relished the different encounters of the Lord as the Darling of Vrindavana. Sutapa dasa kick-started the event with a dynamic presentation on the killing of Trnavarta. He cleverly highlighted how if knowledge does not lead to humility then pride develops and this pride is the cause of a falldown. Amarendra dasa then crafted a detailed journey of the Damodara pastime, of Mother Yashoda binding Lord Krishna. So many gems were revealed. We know the two fingers represent effort and mercy, but which finger represents mercy and which represents effort? We now know that the shorter finger represents effort and the longer finger mercy, emphasising the importance of mercy over our effort. Finally, Mahatma dasa spoke about the deliverance of the Yamala Arjuna trees, ending day one. Day two had even more gems that sparkled through the web. Candramauli Swami took the excited audience through the childhood pastimes of Lord Krishna. Being the auspicious occasion of Gopastami, during the afternoon session, Deena Bandhu dasa then teleported all to Vrindavana whilst he described the different pastime places where Krishna would herd the cows. And finally, Janananda Goswami delved into the details of the killing of the demon Dhenukasura. Each day ended with a live darshan of Sri Sri Radha-Londonisvara and the singing of the Damodarastakam prayers. It was a retreat to remember. Community Development
DEITY DEPARTMENT WELCOMING COMMUNITY MEMBERS BACK INTO PUJARI SERVICE On Sunday 27th September, five devotees from the community came to the Deity Department rooms after seven months to render services. It was a trial run to assess that the environment would be safe both for those coming in and the temple residents. Following the success of the trial run, the Sundays during the month of October saw more community members welcomed back to render a range of services from offering arati, cooking, dressing, transfers service, etc. Garland-making took place on both Saturdays and Sundays in a nearby office. Unfortunately coming back for services was short-lived with the Government announcing new lockdown measures starting from Thursday 5th November and lasting for one month. However, once these lockdown measures ended, devotees were pleased to be back in service again.

GOPASTAMI- SUNDAY 22ND NOVEMBER The Deity Department celebrated Gopastami with a special darshan. Their Lordships were wearing Their classic “Tulasi and Cows” outfit and were surrounded with cows. Srimati Radharani was offered a flower crown and Krishna, Jagannatha and Baladeva were offered flower turban pieces, all of which had cows in! On this day, a new accessory was also offered to Srimati Radharani – a beautiful silver hand mirror.

PUSHPA ABHISHEK - SUNDAY 20TH DECEMBER Despite the pandemic, Their Lordships still got a full Pushpa Abhishek this year, albeit with a small physical audience with only the Temple residents present, and members of the community watching online. It took place in the morning of Sunday 20th December. 8,000 beautiful roses of a variety of colours were sponsored for the abhishek by the Dave family, a flower exporter based in Kenya. Petals from the roses were picked by a small number of volunteers the day before in the Temple Room.

SPOTLIGHT ON A PUJARI with Bhagavatanand dasa
The Community Newsletter Team had a chat with Bhagavatanand dasa, who has been serving enthusiastically as a Pujari at ISKCON-London for fifteen years. We found out about his first visit to the Bury Place Temple in 1977, preaching during lockdown and how he helped to set up a preaching centre in his hometown in India. Community Newsletter Team: Hare Krishna Bhagavatanand dasa! Thank you very much for speaking to us. Please tell us about yourself, like where were you born and your upbringing? Bhagavatanand dasa: I was born and brought up in Gujarat, India. My family religion is Jain. I had a happy childhood. Q) How old were you when you first came in contact with Krishna consciousness? And how did it happen? A) In 1977, I first came to 7 Bury Place, Radha-Krishna Temple with my family, when I was 27 years old. Our baby daughter was brought in front of Sri Sri Radha-Londonisvara for her first darshan. Bury Place Temple had a small temple room, one quarter the size of ISKCON-London’s current temple room. If 15 devotees attended, the room would be overcrowded. One particular devotee was keen for us to buy the ‘Back to Godhead’ magazine for a small donation. Q) When did you first start serving in the Deity Department at ISKCON-London? What services have you been involved in? A) I first started serving in 2005. I did back-up services for Raja Bhoga cooking once a week. I also helped organise the bhoga fridge and polish silver paraphernalia. Later on after my second initiation, I would offer the noon and 4.00pm aratis weekly. I would also assist my wife Vrajkishori devi dasi cooking the Raja Bhoga offering once a week. Q) What keeps you enthusiastic and motivated in your services? A) Serving Sri Sri Radha-Londonisvara gives that spiritual pleasure! Q) The lockdown has stopped your regular services at ISKCON-London. Are there any services you been doing during the lockdown? 15
Deity Department
A) I preach on Zoom to Gujarati audiences. I always go out for walks with my chanting bead bag and preach to whomever is willing to listen. Sometimes I give prasadam or distribute a book to people I meet during my walks. I also do the full morning and evening programmes at my home, including Tulasi puja. I daily read Srila Prabhupada and my Guru Maharaja’s books. Q) Besides Pujari services what other services are you involved in? A) I serve in the London Rathayatra festival every year and I like to give classes in the Temple Room. I usually spend a few months every year in my home town in Gujarat, India and my spiritual master, Bhakti Vikasa Swami encouraged me and my wife Vrajkishori devi dasi to preach village to village there. We found this challenging at first but learnt how to approach the village heads and seek their permission before approaching village members. We met another couple struggling to preach. My Guru Maharaja encouraged us to get together and we started a small centre. People soon started coming to hear about Krishna consciousness in Gujarati and go on sankirtan. We are happy that some villagers have taken initiation in the last few years and we are happy to serve them.

NEW ELECTRIC VAN LAUNCH FFL marked a milestone at Christmas by introducing the UK’s first fully electric food distribution van to serve Londoners. Thanks to the efforts of the ISKCON-London community, the team will now be able to serve hundreds with the new zero emissions van. The van was unveiled at a virtual event on Sunday 20th December, which also marked the 51st installation anniversary of Their Lordships Sri Sri Radha-Londonisvara. The event was hosted by Rahul Singh and Maria Karelina who were playing two budding YouTubers visiting a Hare Krishna Temple for the first time. Highlights of the launch event included the journey of the van, a Vedic ceremony by Head Pujari Murli Manohara dasa, interviews with the Temple President Jai Nitai dasa, Govinda’s Restaurant Manager Thirupati Gauranga dasa, FFL Chief Organiser Acyuta Charan dasa, and the Project Lead Rajiv Nandha. Special guests who joined virtually, including Indradyumna Swami, Sacinandana Swami, Bhakti Rasamrita Swami, and Deputy Mayor of London Rajesh Agrawal, all shared their messages of support. The van has received widespread praise for the design. The project team worked with designers Jagannath Sharan dasa, Shyl Patel, Henna Limbacia and Ambika Design. One side of the van features the iconic London skyline, with a lotus flower

representing ISKCON-London’s contribution of Krishna consciousness in the city. The back of the van contains the Maha Mantra modelled on the Temple’s own harinama devotees, a feature that is now famously part of London’s streets. The other side shows Lord Krishna with a cow, representing ISKCON-London’s transition to Ahimsa milk and a beautiful painting of Srimati Radharani. The highlight for everyone has been Jagannatha, Baladeva and Subhadra Devi on the front of the van designed by Ambika Design from Belarus. In full festive spirit, alongside the launch of the electric food van, the team also served thousands of free meals over 10 days across 10 miles during the Christmas period. This activity makes the connection with the instruction of ISKCON’s founder, Srila Prabhupada, that no-one within 10 miles of a Hare Krishna Temple should go hungry. FFL will now be able to fulfill this in an environmentally-friendly way serving fresh hot nutritious meals.

“The project conception began in November 2018 when I helped at Food for Life for the first time and noticed the need for a new van. Inspired by Shyamasundar dasa’s Chasing Rhino’s book, we decided to aim high and capture the rhino in the UK’s first electric food van in service of the movement. Over 350 fundraisers walked and chanted the Hare Krishna mantra on the streets of London, and over 1,000 people from various backgrounds donated to the cause. It required a lot of time to obtain the van as a fully electric food van has never been manufactured before in the UK.” Rajiv Nandha, Project Lead shares the inspiration and journey of the project
“As part of the van launch, we reached out to homeless shelters, food banks, care homes, NHS staff, key workers and to those in need across London. It has been a humbling experience so far delivering over 2,500 meals to those in need, including struggling families. Along with the meals we also gifted over 1,500 books of spiritual wisdom (led by Shyamavallabha Gopi devi dasi and Janaki Mehta). We are grateful to all those who have been involved.” Dharmita Bhanderi and Hemna Santilale, Food Distribution Leads
A Poem by a FFL Volunteer I was willingly called to service when going out was banned But the fear never rose inside me Because trust held onto my hand. I was willingly called to service and my heart just led the way through abandoned streets of London Serving prasad and love every day. I was willingly called to service and service became part of me Offering food and making friends and building a street family. I was willingly called to service whilst COVID raged a war But my heart started beating for Krishna with a love like never before. I was willingly called to service during the pandemic of Twenty Twenty And my life will never be the same with Krishna right beside me.
22 Food For Life
“The new van will help Govinda’s to expand, to reach more locations to distribute sanctified food. We plan to visit festivals, markets, Rathayatras, and even give people the option to rent for special occasions. The van is equipped with a fitted kitchen, full-size fridge, cooking facilities, and it even has two hatches from which food will be served. As well as Govinda’s famous thali, we also plan to serve dosas and pancakes.” Thirupati Gauranga dasa, Govinda’s Restaurant Manager

LONDON COLLEGE OF VEDIC STUDIES
A range of online courses took place at the London College of Vedic Studies (LCVS) from September to December.
SEPTEMBER • Home Deity Worship Course: Over 65 eager participants took part in the popular Home Deity Worship course. As well as UK participants, there were other participants joining from Portugal, Netherlands, Scotland and the USA. ISKCON-London’s Head Pujari Murli Manohara dasa spoke on everything related to home worship during the four online sessions, including setting up an altar, the importance of cleanliness, how to offer arati, setting standards of worship, and the importance of keeping the right mood while serving the Lord. The last session included a practical live demonstration of polishing, bathing and dressing brass Gaura Nitai deities. Participants appreciated Murli Manohara dasa’s patience while answering their questions and loved all the helpful tips he shared with them.
• Bhakti Shastri Course: LCVS was pleased to offer for the first time an online Bhakti Sastri course during 2020-2021, attracting 40 participants. An online version meant that participants across the UK could enrol, and we also have participants from Hungary, India and Lithuania. This year-long course offers an in-depth study of four key texts including the Bhagavad-Gita, The Nectar of Instruction, Sri Isopanisad and The Nectar of Devotion. Jai Nitai dasa kicked off the first unit focusing on chapters one to six from the Bhagavad-Gita and guiding the students through the verses and Srila Prabhupada’s purports. This intensive study course includes memorising slokas, writing essays and taking online tests.

OCTOBER • Five Topics of the Bhagavad-Gita Course: A course for newcomers and those wanting to learn about the key topics in the Bhagavad-Gita took place over four Friday evenings in October with Jai Nitai dasa. The ‘Five Topics of the Bhagavad-Gita’ course attracted 25 participants including people from Croatia and the Netherlands. Jai Nitai dasa expanded on the five key topics mentioned by Srila Prabhupada in the introduction of the BhagavadGita and provided modern day examples to help participants relate the teachings to the modern world. • Developing Good Sadhana Habits Seminar: LCVS coordinated with the Russian Vedic Society to organise a joint seminar called ‘Developing Good Sadhana Habits’ with senior monk, Valmiki dasa, from Russia. He shared valuable insights on how to overcome laziness and over-sleeping for example by regulating eating and sleeping habits and how to develop good habits. • Dusshera Special Seminar ‘The Fire of Desire’: Chaitanya Charan dasa joined us online from India to speak at a two-part Dusshera Special Seminar ‘The Fire of Desire’ looking at the festival of burning Ravana. He discussed the inner transformations devotees should reflect on during this festival and the warning signals that Ravana failed to notice. • ISKCON Disciples Course: ISKCON-London’s Outreach Coordinator Dayal Mora dasa taught the four-part ISKCON Disciples Course (IDC). This course is aimed at providing guidance on the roles of guru and disciple within the multi guru structure of ISKCON. Over 35 participants joined in and gave great feedback on Dayal Mora dasa’s clarity and knowledgeable sessions.
NOVEMBER • Manah Siksa Course: Urmila devi dasi delivered a wonderful three-part seminar on the ‘Manah Siksa’, a text written by Srila Raghunatha dasa Goswami. A beautiful presentation highlighted instructions within the 12 verses for overcoming obstacles on the path of bhakti and developing attachment to the Holy Names and Krishna. • Science VS Spirituality Seminar: Keshav Anand dasa joined from India to deliver a fascinating talk which discussed if there is proof of the existence of the soul or consciousness separate from the body. He presented evidences including out-of-body experiences and prominent scientist Ian Stevenson’s hundreds of past life (reincarnation) cases which he had investigated.

STUDENT FEEDBACK I really found the Fire of Desire course very interesting and Chaitanya Charan explains everything step by step and very carefully, making sure that everyone understands fully and also the graphics were simple but excellently self-explanatory. Wonderful points like this one on temptations: “A lot of temptations in this material world always keep coming to disturb and provoke our mind but we should always have stronger and greater desire to serve the Lord which should always keep us driving. So we could easily purify our mind to control ourselves from turning these desires into intentions.” Anil Sharma, ‘The Fire of Desire – Dusshera Special Seminar’ attendee
“Thank you again for such a number one evening with all the course material on time and with a smooth organisation. Very nice structure of the course especially for those whom are new and also for those whom are studying a few years as well. This structure gives me a focused framework for sharing parts of the topics in Dutch to groups of students and to women in my network in the Netherlands. Loved the connection with our own lives, reflection questions and the link with Western films / writers as well.
It is not easy at all to put such a treasure-hold of such spiritual knowledge into understandable parts starting from invocation, Srila Prabhupada’s history, explaining As It Is, glossary and pronunciation, the connection with Bhagavan, setting the scene with the introduction and introducing the main characters.” Bindumati Priya devi dasi (from the Netherlands), ‘Five Topics of the Bhagavad-Gita’ course attendee
“One thing I’ve found most interesting on the ISKCON Disciples Course was the feeling of being connected to a large spiritual family like ISKCON. The course teacher is exceptional, full of wisdom of the heart and mind. The course has made me see the world differently for so many reasons. One being, there are thousands of good souls around the world who all think like you and want to help others on their path, how amazing is that! I am just at the very beginning of my spiritual journey and I’m enjoying every moment. I want to take this opportunity to say thank you from my heart for a truly wonderful life-changing course, with inspiring beautiful people.” Clare Louise O’Mara, ‘ISKCON Disciples Course’ attendee

STUDENT FEEDBACK “This is the first time I have attended one of the LCVS courses and the course has certainly helped me tremendously in my spiritual journey. I am so glad I did the course as it gave me inspiration to go deep. I was really impressed with the attention Jai Nitai gave to the students and even agreed to take follow-up questions via emails, and his replies were very helpful and prompt. I am aged 62 and a Financial Markets Trader and a coach. At my trainings I always have a 60-minute session on the Bhagavad-Gita and I have a table with all of Srila Prabhupada’s books. It is my mission to distribute as many Bhagavad-Gita books as possible, and recently I distributed my 150th book. The target is to distribute 1,008+ books. After distributing the books, I do a follow-up and then refer them to their local ISKCON centre. I am so glad that I came across LCVS via Facebook and look forward to learning more and most importantly applying the wisdom to my day-to-day life.” Jay Lakhani, ‘Overview of the Bhagavad Gita’ course attendee
“I heard about this course through the ISKCON-London Community Newsletter and wanted to join to deepen my understanding of the Bhagavad-Gita. I can say handon-heart that this short course was brilliant. It inspired me to “think outside the box” and also how to understand the box and how it can limit all of us in realising our full potential. I would recommend the course even to those who are familiar with the Bhagavad-Gita because the teacher Jai Nitai had so many wonderful insights to share about this ancient wisdom that made it relevant to what was going on in my life right now.” Steven James, ‘Five Topics of the Bhagavad-Gita’ course attendee
The Home Deity Worship course was excellent and very informative. The presentation was good with lots of explanations and visuals. Murli Manohara Prabhu did a great job to break up the course information for us. After attending the course I have implemented much more in my home worship and changed the way I do certain things after learning about them in the course. Michael Gheorghe (from Scotland), ‘Home Deity Worship’ course attendee

Ashram member, Shyam Govinda dasa, also created a series of videos called ‘Meditation is a Lifestyle’ to share spiritual wisdom on Facebook. The outdoor kirtan programme named Free Spirit Sundays in Soho Square Park was stopped due to revised COVID-19 safety measures. During September, the Outreach Team had more one-day Padayatra walks outside London (which are technically still considered Padayatra according to the official ISKCON padayatra standards) to different locations such as Eastbourne, Hastings and Hythe.

OUTREACH INTERVIEW WITH DEELAN The Community Newsletter Team caught up with Deelan, a 22 year old student at the University of Westminster and currently living in Wembley. He works part-time in retail as a supervisor and during his spare time, likes to read literature novels and go to the gym. He has been attending ISKCONLondon outreach programmes since July 2019.
Community Newsletter Team: Hare Krishna Deelan! Thanks for speaking to us. Tell us a bit about yourself.
Deelan: Hare Krishna! I come from a mixed background since my mum is Roman Catholic and my dad a Marathi. Yet I was raised with both religions and even till today I attend both the church and mandir (temple).
Q) Would you call yourself a spiritual person? If yes, why?
A) Since I was born my family has guided me to spirituality. Every morning I do my malas and mantras and listen to my various kirtans (chanting). I strongly believe that it is necessary to pray in order to stay safe and protected. As you know, day-by-day the world is becoming more dangerous. For example in London every day there are stabbings and attacks and I believe praying keeps that negativity away. It also allows me to be more relaxed by chanting as it clears my mind.

Q) Where had your spiritual journey taken you before you came into contact with the Hare Krishnas?
A) I have travelled a lot trying to discover religion. Last August I went on a trip to India where I stayed in an ashram. From there I’ve discovered various temples within the country and have helped the community a lot, for example by taking care of the cows, bathing the Deities, helping students study and learn English, cook as a community, and I did some volunteering. It has really opened my eyes about how blessed we are to live in a developed country with such facilities and it makes you want to work harder to help those in need. I have also done similar activities in other countries like Thailand but there we took care of the elephants.

PROJECT GROW Project Grow gardeners continued to provide beautiful flowers and vegetables throughout September and October for use by the Deity Department in the service of Their Lordships.
“Don’t think that if one is engaged in the Deity worship and if one is engaged in the gardening work there is distinction. No. The one who is working as a gardener, he is as good as the one who is dressing the Deity.” Srila Prabhupada, Lecture, June 8th 1975, Honolulu
“How to become a yogi through gardening? Is there any yoga system? Just try to understand. Is there any yoga system simply by digging earth for gardening one can become yogi? Is there any yoga system? Here the boys, when they dig earth for planting rose flower for Krishna, he is thinking, “Oh, the flower will be nice. It will be offered to Krishna.” There is immediately yoga!” Srila Prabhupada, Lecture, February 22nd 1969, Los Angeles 33 Project Grow

REGIONAL The following regional areas have regular Krishna Conscious programmes taking place which are supported by ISKCON-London: Folkestone (Atma Lounge), Crawley (Bhakti Yoga Centre), Brighton, Canterbury, Margate, North Kent and Wimbledon. The contact details for each centre can be found at the bottom of this section if you would like to get involved.
ATMA LOUNGE Since it did not look like the COVID-19 restrictions would ease any time soon, the Atma Lounge team decided to return to online preaching programmes with full force! They are now running nine programmes each week, including a Bhagavad-Gita discussion group, weekly Srila Prabhupada lecture on Facebook and WhatsApp, Srimad-Bhagavatam readings five mornings a week, a live morning meditation at the Atma Lounge (with social distancing measures in place) and not to forget the highlight of the week, the Zoom special Sunday Feast with takeaways from the Magic Kitchen! Radha Ramana dasa has also kindly been giving several ISKCON Disciple Course supplement classes. The Secrets of India Gift Shop is open five days a week (dependent on Government guidelines) and now blessing everyone with darshan from a beautiful new Krishna Deity, arriving on Janmastami from Belgium. During December, Atma Lounge was in full spirits for Srila Prabhupada’s book marathon with several book tables, street sankirtana, and books flying out of the shop as well. Congregation members, Sandy and her ten-year old son Josh won the prize for most creative book distribution method by making a festive book advent calendar! Catastrophe struck when the Government announced the introduction of Tier 4 restrictions, half an hour before the shop closed on the last Saturday before Christmas, closing the shop during what is usually the busiest week of the year. However, that did not stop Srila Prabhupada’s book distribution in Folkestone, as the devotees had a book table outside the shop for passers-by to pick up a “lockdown” book and give donations through the letterbox or online. 13 Bhagavad-Gitas were distributed on Gita Jayanti. 35 Regional
CANTERBURY ISKCON Canterbury organised a big book distribution initiative at the University of Kent, distributing transcendental books on campus, in flats of students, and by inviting students for programmes and sharing transcendental knowledge. Many University students have been cooped up inside their halls of residence since the start of term and so Mantra Caitanya dasa and his student team enthusiastically reached out to students to give them the tools they needed not only to survive the pandemic, but to thrive in it; chanting the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra and reading transcendental books is the best way to do that! Over the three Saturdays in October they have distributed just over 1,000 transcendental books on campus, and have invited at least as many students to their free meditation sessions which take place both at the University and online. ISKCON Canterbury has also set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for distributing books to students. If you would like to donate, please click on the link here: gf.me/u/yw7sw3

READING CHALLENGE Jai Nitai dasa and Bhava Bhakti devi dasi’s grihasta mentee group took part in the ‘Be a Sage, Page By Page’ reading challenge and read the whole of the ‘Nectar of Devotion’ in three months by reading four pages a day. Mentees who took part were Krishna Kanta devi dasi, Nimai Candra dasa, Prana Sakhi devi dasi, and Ashika, along with Jai Nitai dasa and Bhava Bhakti devi dasi too. Bhava Bhakti devi dasi’s ladies mentee group also undertook another reading challenge for one month to read ‘Easy Journey to Other Planets’. They did this by reading four pages of the book daily and sharing their realisations on a separate WhatsApp group. The mentees who took part were: Devaki devi dasi, Amanda, Ashmita, Sophie, Varsha, and Vrishnee. “The goal is not to become mechanical in the reading or treat it like a race and so daily the devotees have to share what stood out in their reading or a realisation they had from the reading. In this way the hope is that devotees will ignite a lifelong interest in being disciplined towards regular reading of Srila Prabhupada’s amazing books.” Bhava Bhakti devi dasi, Mentor In December, members of Jai Nitai dasa and Bhava Bhakti devi dasi’s grihasta mentee group read four pages daily from the Science of Self Realisation and shared their realisations. The devotees who took part were Krishna Kanta devi dasi, Nimai Candra dasa, Prana Sakhi devi dasi, Vrinda Sundari devi dasi, Ashika, and Nimish.
