HUNGARIAN DELIGHT

Sample Hungarian wines for a delicious taste of history. By Georgene Mortimer, Island Winery

T

he Hungarian word for wine is bor, but one thing for certain is that with its fascinating history, unique growing conditions and range of flavors, Hungarian wine is anything but boring. Like all renowned European wine regions, around the fifth century AD, the Romans brought grapevines to the land known today as Hungary. During the Ottoman occupation, new vines from France and Italy were introduced. In the late 1800s, when Ottoman power was ceded to Austria, grapevines with Germanic origins were brought to the area. All of these historic influences helped shaped Hungary’s unique wine offerings. However, just when the region’s wine production was thriving, the deadly Phllyoxera epidemics of the late 1800s decimated most of Europe’s vineyards. Meantime, just as scientists found the remedy for this scourge, two world wars slowed the recovery of the wine industry throughout Europe. Most of Europe’s wine regions thrived after World War II, while Hungary’s wine country languished due to the priorities of the Communist regimes. It wasn’t until 1989, when renewed interest and investment in the wine regions brought Hungarian wines back to world-class prominence. An old Ottoman legend is captured in the wines of the Eger region, located just north of Budapest. The rich, spicy red wine Egri Bikavér means “bull’s blood.” It is said that during the Ottoman siege of Eger, Hungarian troops drinking the red wine had so intimidated their attackers with their bloodshot eyes, red-stained beards and fiery temperaments that they insisted the Hungarians were not to be messed with because they drank the blood of a bull. 14

ISLAND EVENTS JAN/FEB 2019

Many Hungarian wines have trouble breaking into markets because the wines and grapes used are seemingly esoteric. Wines from the Villany region are the exception. This warm region situated on the southernmost tip of Hungary features wines similar to French Bordeaux blends. Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are the featured grapes, bottled either on their own or blended together. With a nod to regional history, some winemakers add Austro-Hungarian grapes such as Kadarka and Kekfrankos to give these wines a unique Hungarian twist. Tokaj is Hungary’s oldest classified wine region and home to the world-class Tokaji Aszu. This sweet, topaz-colored wine has intense flavors of honey, citrus and apricots, and was one of Europe’s most highly prized wines in the 18th and 19th centuries. While this region has moved on to produce excellent dry white wines known as Furmint, a bottle of premiere Tokaji Aszu can fetch around $50 per bottle. Furmint wine styles can vary widely, with some tasting like an off-dry Riesling and others evoking an aged Chardonnay. The next time you’re in a wine shop, take the time to peruse the Hungarian wine section. Since they are under-hyped, you will find delicious wines steeped in history at great values. The perfect bottle of handcrafted artisan wine awaits at Island Winery on Cardinal Rd. Complimentary tastings, wine by the glass and cheese platters are available MondaySaturday from 12:30-5:30 p.m. and Sunday from 12-4 p.m. (843) 842-3141 or www.islandwinery.com. hiltonhead.com

Horoscope

January 2019

ARIES Your ambitious New Year’s resolutions could lead to disappointment. This year, consider making it your goal to set aside time each week to reflect. Luck will be on your side this month, but not in the romance department. A Sagittarius with a different outlook will be insulted by your inflexible views. TAURUS A community gathering will test your social skills, but a kind Virgo will make you feel at ease. This is not the month for unnecessary spending. If you view this New Year as an opportunity to realign your priorities, 2019 could prove to be one for the record books. GEMINI Despite the temptation, do not spread gossip about your work rival. Your kindness will come back to you in spades. A family member will need some cheering up this month, but remember they do not need you to be a comedian—just a friend. CANCER The creative juices are flowing this month. Whatever your medium, express what you’re feeling and share the finished product with a Taurus. Financially speaking, this is a good month to make a strategic investment.

LIBRA The New Year will leave you questioning your priorities. Consider how much time you devote to others, in comparison to self-care and guarding your personal health. Danger lurks around the corner. Seek comfort in the friendship of a kind Gemini. SCORPIO Suppressing your emotions will get the best of you this month and put you in an embarrassing situation. Be honest with yourself, and all will soon be forgotten. Strategic planning has left you with additional holiday funds. Remember, giving is always in season. SAGITTARIUS A project at the office will force you to work alongside a boisterous Leo. Practice patience as much as possible. Through collaboration, you can achieve success. Watch your finances this month, and avoid making any unusual purchases. CAPRICORN Your New Year will begin with a lucky streak full of good fortune. Add some more social events to your calendar and escape the office for a few hours. It will do your heart and your mind a world of good.

LEO A job well done in the office will put you in the spotlight. Don’t let your pride be your demise. Take the time to listen to a stranger in need, and keep an open mind to the romantic advances of an old friend.

AQUARIUS A chance meeting with a Sagittarius will spark your imagination. Write down your thoughts, draw your designs and share your ideas. Spend some extra time with that distant family member this month. They may not say it, but they need your love and support now more than ever.

VIRGO Your charm will not get you out of a sticky situation later this month. Own up to your mistake. This is your month to make a mark on the city’s social scene and to treat yourself. Don’t forget to leave some time in your schedule for quality time with family and friends.

PISCES Don’t let a simple misunderstanding put you on the defensive. Everyone is not aiming to ruin your day. An intuitive Cancer will help bring you back down to earth. Take their advice, and redirect your energy toward your career. A major opportunity could be coming your way.

THE MAJESTIC

GREAT BLUE

HERON By Anthony R. Savarese, Reel Carolina

O

ne of the many creatures you are sure to encounter in the Sea Pines Forest Preserve is the Great Blue Heron. A Lowcountry treasure and a beautiful example of nature at her finest, this giant bird stands up to 39 inches high and is an illustrious predator. Often, these magnificent birds can be seen on the banks of lagoons either fishing or warming themselves in the sun. The Great Blue Heron is a master fisherman and uses its long, colored toes to entice fish. When prey ventures too close, the heron uses its razorsharp beak to strike with deadly accuracy and rarely misses its quarry. Guests on the H20 Alligator Boat often get to experience this thrilling sight up close, with a knowledgeable guide who can point out the little details that make the experience even more enjoyable. While you are bound to see a variety of other birds out on the water, the Great Blue Heron is a special treat. The Great Blue Heron is one of the largest birds in the heron species, with a range encompassing all of North America and some of Central and South America. They mate and nest from December through March, so this time of year is the perfect opportunity to see one. Their diet in the Sea Pines Forest Preserve consists mostly of fish; however, they have been seen eating eels, snakes and frogs as well. The Great Blue Herons in the preserve are indigenous to the area and live within its boundaries year-round. They are familiar with the H20 Alligator Boat and often allow patrons to get very close for an unparalleled look at local wildlife. Passengers who are fortunate enough to see the Great Blue

Many other birds share the preserve with Great Blue Herons, including Egrets, Storks, Night Herons, Green Herons, Ospreys, Bald Eagles and more. However, the sighting of a Great Blue Heron is sure to be an unforgettable encounter for all who experience it. Fishing for SHEEPSHEAD By Miles Altman, Bayrunner Fishing Charters “Light north wind, and seas less than a foot,” my brother Don said. “I have plenty of fiddlers. You want to go?” Silly question. Sheepshead is definitely in my top-three favorite fish to catch.

A day on the water is always full of surprises.

These sneaky bandits offer great challenge. Just getting a hook set is tricky, and the battle is always satisfying, especially with a fish over five pounds. When it comes to table fare, they don’t call them “river snapper” for nothing. Visions of fried sheepshead with grits and eggs over easy danced through my head. I met Don at 6:30 the following chilly morning, and we put the boat in just as the sun broke over the horizon -- the announcement of a fresh day full of promise. It had been years since I’d been in the creeks we traversed on the way to the reef. Good memories floated through my freezing brain. The 38-degree morning, coupled with a 30 mph cruising speed, had my teeth chattering. Thankfully, after a half hour, we arrived at the reef and had it all to ourselves. Studying the depth finder for the structure that had been so productive the weekend before, we marveled at the calmness of the ocean. It was a pictureperfect day with flat seas, as Don’s fishing buddy Von manned the anchor. Structure found and anchor set, we pulled out the fiddlers and baited hooks. With eager anticipation, I waited for the telltale slack in the line that signaled the bait had reached the structure some 40 feet below. Reeling the fish-finder rig up just until there was tension on the line, I focused intently on the rod tip. You see, with these bandits, the slightest tap (unperceived at times, if you’re not watching closely) is all you get before you’re fishing on credit. After thinning out the obligatory black sea bass (always an inch short of legal size), I finally drew first blood on the black-and-white striped target. Not a huge fish, but a sheepie nonetheless. It wouldn’t be too long, however, ‘til a nice 52

five-pounder was on. With rod doubled and drag protesting, the battle was on. A few minutes later, Von slid the net under my catch, and I proclaimed, “big fish.” Don soon caught a big fish, which would turn out to be a red drum. Several bruising battles with black drum ensued, and I smiled thinking I had the winner in the clubhouse. Pride goeth before a fall, however, as Von’s rod bent double. After a hard-fought battle, I slid the net under his fish, which was obviously bigger than mine. Fourteen sheepshead later, we headed home. Another great day of bandit fishing! Capt. Miles Altman of Bayrunner Fishing Charters has more than 42 years experience fishing the waters surrounding Hilton Head Island. Don’t miss the new “Finatic” boat, which can accommodate up to 12 passengers and features a special three-hour shark/dolphin eco-tour trip. HELP SAVE THE PLANET Minor adjustments in your life can affect major change. By Anneliza Itkor, Outside Hilton Head We all do it. The New Year rolls around, and we start making all kinds of resolutions. I’m going to get back in the gym. I’m going to lose these last 10 pounds. I am going to give up _______ (sugar or carbs or wine or…well, you can fill in the blank). These are all admirable and worthy resolutions, but they pale in comparison to committing to SAVING THE PLANET. Wow. How cool does THAT sound? And what’s amazing is that it only requires minor adjustments in your life to affect major change. Because Hilton Head Island is an oceanfront community, I looked to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for some ideas about how to make better choices for a better planet. First and foremost, we need to remember the three R’s: reduce, reuse and recycle. By cutting down on what we throw away, we conserve both landfill space and natural resources.

Here are a few tips to help you make a positive impact on the environment in 2019 and beyond: Conserve Water. It’s so simple. Turn off the water while you brush your teeth or wash your hands. Don’t run the dishwasher or the laundry until it’s full. Install a rain barrel, and use that water to hydrate plants. There are all kinds of little ways to save lots of water. Plant a tree. You don’t need to plant a forest. Or even two trees. Plant one single tree. If every person in the United States planted one tree a year, we would create 330 million little miracles that can help save energy, clean the air and prevent climate change. Bike more, drive less. Here on Hilton Head Island, we have more than 100 miles of paved bike trails. It makes getting around on two wheels convenient and safe. Grab your helmet and get out and ride. Use energy-efficient light bulbs. They help cut down on greenhouse gas emissions. And remember, the energy used over the lifetime of an incandescent bulb is five times the cost of an LED or CFL bulb. 54

Refine your game and sharpen your swing in the New Year. By Doug Weaver, Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort The New Year is the perfect time to get serious about improving your golf game.

THOUGHTS ABOUT

GOLF IN

Two reasons to play golf are fun and activity. Golf is a leisure sport that requires very little effort and provides physical and mental benefits to people of all ages. Invite a friend to join you in this adventure for a lifetime. With Valentine’s Day coming up, it’s important to remember that golf is a game that couples can play together. Double your pleasure. Today is the day to get started!

0

Zero is the starting point in counting. Every new activity starts at zero. If you have no experience or equipment, that is okay. This is where you start. Zero is also the point on a scale or instrument from which a positive or a negative quantity is reckoned. Let the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy Professionals get you into the positive patterns of enjoyable golf.

1

One is the first step. Neil Armstrong took the first step on the moon and said, “That is one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Now the USA has landed a spacecraft on Mars over 97 million miles away. My friend and Islander Leo Luken started golf at age 41 and played his last round at age 95. He never imagined he would interact with Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player, much less win first place in a tournament with three golf legends in it. When will you get started?

9

Nine holes is a goal. Keep it simple and ask for help to get started with reachable goals. The coaches can help any beginner start correctly, help the 30 handicapper get to 20, help the 20 play at 10 and help the 10 play at 5. It’s a cinch by the inch and a trial by the mile. “When your memories exceed your dreams, the end is near.” Let’s dream about golf in 2019. I hope to see you out on the green! A former PGA Tour pro and member of the local golf Hall of Fame, Doug Weaver is the Director of Instruction at the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy. He conducts “Where Does the Power Come From?,” a free clinic and demonstration, every Monday at 4 p.m. (843) 785-1138, (800) 827-3006 or www.palmettodunes.com.
