Primitivo Roots This mysterious Italian grape has unexpected connections around the world. By Georgene Mortimer, Island Winery

T

he Primitivo grape caused quite a stir in the wine world. At first, the quandary surrounded the geographic origin of the grape. Then, a new debate raged over a seemingly unrelated issue: the California Zinfandel grape. Brought to the East Coast in the mid-1800s amongst a batch of grapevines from Vienna, Austria, Zinfandel made the cross-country trip to California during the Gold Rush. Over time, a false belief started to take hold, suggesting that Zinfandel was an indigenous American grape and not an immigrant from Europe. Since Zinfandel was the most widely planted grape in California, it seemed appropriate to confirm its origins. In the 1960s, during a visit to Puglia, Italy, an American wine researcher noticed astounding similarities between the Zinfandel grape and the Italian Primitivo grape. Both varieties were extensively researched, and experts concluded that Zinfandel and Primitivo are, indeed, the same grape.

has been covered in Primitivo vines since the 15th century. The name comes from the Latin primitivus, which means “first to ripen.” Harvest time for Primitivo is in early August. The dark-skinned grapes produce a wine that is inky dark and high in tannins as well as alcohol. Unlike its California counterpart, Primitivo vines were hard to manage and produced wines that looked better than they tasted. While dark and bold in color, the wines were typically flat and tasteless. These wines were mostly used for blending because they rarely produced a wine that could stand on its own. Subsequently, in the 1990s, a program was started to pull out most of the Italian Primitivo vines.

Luckily for the Primitivo vines, fate would intervene. During the time when the vine extraction project was ongoing, researchers pinpointed Croatia, just across the However, while most research- Adriatic Sea from Puglia, as ers agreed the two varietals the geographic origin of the are the same, this debate did Primitivo/Zinfandel grape. nothing to solve the original Then, in 2001, the exact variquandary: What is the origin etal was finally located in a of the Primitivo grape? After 50 years of debate, it instantly became headline news in the wine community that the famous California Zinfandel can be traced to a scarce and obscure grape in Croatia called Crljenak Kaštelanski. This finding sparked new interest in the beleaguered Italian Primitivo, which probably saved it from obscurity. Today, Primitivo thrives in Puglia. New World techniques, low yields and careful winery management have greatly improved the quality of these wines. Instead of flabby, thin wines, they are now concentrated, hearty versions that develop well under the hot Italian sun. Primitivos tend to be juicy, well structured, heavy with pigment, concentrated and high in alcohol. Island Winery has just introduced a Primitivo to its lineup. To celebrate, we invite you over to raise a glass of Primitivo-Zinfandel-Crljenak Kaštelanski and toast! The perfect bottle of handcrafted artisan wine awaits at Island Winery on Cardinal Rd. Complimentary tastings, wine by the glass and cheese platters are available Monday-Saturday from 12:305:30 p.m. and Sunday from 12-4 p.m. (843) 842-3141 or www.islandwinery.com. hiltonhead.com

March 2019 Island Events 25

Horoscope march 2019 ARIES It’s the perfect time to get your "house" in order. If you never have enough time for what you're passionate about, stop giving in to the small stuff that fills up your days and put your top priorities first. Remember that urgent isn't always synonymous with important. TAURUS Brick by brick, that’s how you'll build your foundation this month. Be sure to find ways to reward yourself, but beware: not all distractions are created equal, and some can actually eat away at what you've so carefully crafted.

LIBRA Don’t miss what’s right in front of you this month. Sometimes those we love just need to air their grievances. Do your best to hold off on the lectures and just listen. SCORPIO Remember that control is an illusion. It's not serving you to be in charge 24/7, and it’s unrealistic to think that your bidding should be at the top of everyone else's list. When you've loosened the reins a bit, watch how much better you feel.

first instinct is often to fly headlong into a situation, jumping first and asking questions later. This month, even a quick peek at the details will help stave off awkwardness. A shift in your family may cause tension, but don't be drawn into the drama.

SAGITTARIUS You’ll hit the bullseye when it comes to confidence this month, but be careful not to project your own feelings onto someone who does not have the chops to stay long-term in your orbit. You’ll get some advice this month that will make you feel better about your love life.

CANCER Change up your routine this month. Not only will you experience everything afresh, you’ll discover something unexpected on the home front. As for what you've been looking for: you may think you've looked everywhere, but you haven't. It's time to widen the search.

CAPRICORN Identify a burden that isn't yours to bear and let it go. At some point this month, take a stroll down memory lane with a cache of items you haven't seen in a while. You will make a discovery there that will turn something you believed on its head.

LEO This month you will find your whole world opening up when you are reminded to let in some fascination. Luck is on your side, in love and at work. Keep an open mind and an open heart in all ventures.

AQUARIUS An old friend will help you recharge and regroup this month. Remember to work before play, though. You'll have plenty of opportunities for fun, particularly in your love life. Remain open to meeting new people and making friends.

VIRGO You are going to serve as someone's guardian angel this month. Take the time to help a loved one in need. You’ll be rewarded for your efforts. Beware of risks at work.

PISCES Tackle a few tasks that were just too much to face over the winter and add a little more color to your wardrobe. Expand your inner circle of trusted loved ones, and get ready to blossom this spring!

Explore the famous candystriped Lighthouse in Harbour Town, the Mediterranean charm of Shelter Cove Harbour, the New England-style fishing village of South Beach Marina, the Key West atmosphere of Palmetto Bay Marina and the hidden charms of Broad Creek Marina, Skull Creek Marina and Hilton Head Harbor.

Make a Splash

Jump on a jet ski or waverunner and whiz across the water on an adventure around the Island, or try tubing, wakeboarding, waterskiing, kneeboarding and skurfing with a USCG-certified captain. It’s fast, fun and a sure way to keep your cool on sizzling summer days.

Get on Board

Photo by Joyce Harkins, Hilton Head Island Photography

The sport of choice for ancient Hawaiians and modern Hollywood hipsters, standup paddleboarding (SUP) is making waves in the Lowcountry. Easy to learn and a great work-

out, take a few lessons before heading out for a yoga class, nature tour, moonlight paddle, fireworks trip or race. Of course, thrill seekers can still catch waves on traditional surfboards, skim boards and boogie boards.

Set Sail

Let the wind fill your sails as you salute the sunset on a Happy Hour Cruise, hail a water taxi to neighboring Daufuskie Island, spend a few hours or all day sightseeing, battle pirates on a swash-buckling adventure, catch the seasonal fireworks displays from the water, sign up for sailing lessons or rent a boat and play your way.

Paddle Away

Experience the Island’s wildlife up close on a guided kayak or canoe trip through calm tidal creeks and Lowcountry marshlands. Choose from customized family adventures, corporate retreats, team-building exercises or camps for kids, tweens and teens. Just don’t forget your camera to capture picture-perfect moments, or your fishing pole to catch a delicious dinner.

Go Wild

A natural setting for adventure, discover the wild side of the Island and the amazing array of animals that call it home. Depart on a dolphin-watching trip, shark-fishing excursion, alligator adventure, turtle talk and walk or bird-watching tour to view the Island’s wild inhabitants.

Fly High

Soar hundreds of feet above the water on a parasailing trip, get a bird’s-eye view of the Lowcountry on a helicopter ride or spend a few thrilling hours on an aerial adventure ziplining through majestic oaks and pine trees at water’s edge.

Reel Fun

Bait your hook and head out for a day of deep-sea or shark fishing with experienced boat captains who know the secret spots, drop a line from a kayak or into the nearest lagoon, cast a shrimp net or try surf fishing to see what you can catch.

Hit the Beach

The Island’s 12 miles of hard-packed, white-sand beaches provide the perfect playground for any age, in any season. Rent a bike, splash in the surf, fly a kite, build castles in the sand or simply relax on a rented beach chair under an umbrella with a good book in hand. hiltonhead.com

In Search of

Sheepies Photo provided by Capt. Miles Altman

By Capt. Miles Altman, Bayrunner Fishing Charters

The main goal was table fare (and I rank sheepshead right at the top), so we moved to another spot on the reef. After catching small sea bass, ringtails and other assorted small reef fish at that spot and the next, but no sheepshead, we decided that the big black drum were at least top-notch sport and resolved to head back to the original spot. We weren’t there minutes before Captain Herb tied into a nice one pushing 30 pounds. The bite was still on and action steady. Captain Bryan hooked up and the fish made a searing run that almost spooled him. Muttering “probably a stingray,” he fought and the battle raged for a good 15 to 20 minutes, only to culminate in loud hoops and hollers when it broke the surface. The black drum was pushing 60 pounds, if not more! We lost several more this size to the reef and ended up with a dozen or more between 30 and 50 pounds.

W

eeks of cold bad weather brought on a case of cabin fever, so a prediction of calm seas left me with no choice but to head off the beach in search of the wily sheepshead. The dilemma at hand was a serious lack of fiddler crabs, the bait of choice for the sheepies. Captain Herb Rennard of Palmetto Bluff and I had discussed stories of success with clams and mussels, so we loaded up on those. To make it a complete busman’s holiday, we completed the crew with Captain Bryan Benson of the Bayrunner and Captain Ben Ranney of the Finatic. Arriving at the reef, we dropped the clams down onto the structure with much anticipation. Nothing happened immediately, but Captain Ben soon announced a solid hookup with a good-sized fish. A few minutes into the fight it became apparent that it was no sheepie, but a full-grown fish nonetheless. I hooked up not long after to something large myself, but like Captain Ben’s it didn’t display the classic up-and-down seesaw battle—the trademark sheepshead fight. Soon we had a pair of 20- to 25-pound black drum on board, too big to keep.

52 Island Events March 2019

Now there are two theories in regard to bait. One prescribes to the size of the bait matching the fish. The other is “you can catch elephants on peanuts.” The small bits of clams we were fishing with lent credence to the latter. I have, at this time of year, crushed the big black drum on tiny fiddlers. I might add that these fish were caught on light tackle trout rods with small 2/0 hooks. We left the reef with nothing for dinner, but satisfyingly tired. As for the sheepshead, next time we will bring fiddlers. If you want to catch some, March is the time! Capt. Miles Altman of Bayrunner Fishing Charters has more than 42 years experience fishing the waters surrounding Hilton Head Island. SPARTINA SPLENDOR © Daina Krumins, 2011

C

In the fall, cordgrass develops small white flowers along the upper stalk that develop into seed heads. As the leaves turn a golden brown, the seeds disperse. These seeds not only create new spartina plants, but are also an important food source for local and migratory birds.

By Anneliza Itkor, Outside Hilton Head

In the winter, when the grass dies back, the spartina forms what we call wrack. This wrack is pushed into the current by rising tides and new growth, and quickly begins to decompose. Wrack releases nutrients back into the ecosystem and eventually sinks to the bottom, nourishing the pluff mud from which it grows. Each and every stage of life plays an essential role in the health of the saltmarsh.

ordgrass serves as a keystone element in the Lowcountry’s saltmarsh environment.

March heralds the arrival of spring here on Hilton Head Island. While the rest of the country may look to budding trees to indicate winter’s conclusion, here in the Lowcountry, our marsh grass paints the canvas of seasonal change. A coppery brown during the winter, this perennial grass sprouts vivid green new growth as spring approaches. Spartina alternaflora — or, as the locals refer to it, cordgrass — is one of the keystone elements of our saltmarsh environment. It’s worthwhile to take a look at some of the more fascinating properties of spartina, as well as the unique role it plays in the preservation of this ecosystem. Let’s start by looking at how spartina serves the saltmarsh during different stages of growth. While cordgrass roots don’t necessarily grow very deep, a single plant’s root system will spread out 12 to 15 feet and interlock with the plants around it. These root mats help stabilize the marsh mud, protecting against erosion. Spartina stalks also break up wave energy before it reaches land, lessening the impact of storms. This feature contributes to Hilton Head’s status as a barrier island. These grasses, measuring 8 to 60 inches, also provide an important refuge for all kinds of wildlife. Wading birds, marsh wrens, clapper rails, mink and otter are among the critters seeking refuge here from predators, inclement weather and the curious eyes of humans. 54 Island Events March 2019

And let’s not fail to mention one of this plant’s most unique features: spartina grass requires freshwater to nourish its root systems. One might wonder how it acquires freshwater when we only find it growing in saltwater marshes. The plant actually draws saltwater up into its core and then “sweats out” the salt through special glands located at the base of its leaves — in essence distilling its own freshwater. With its excellent survival skills and ability to protect our wildlife and our coastline, spartina alternaflora demonstrates all the properties of a warrior. It’s definitely worth a trip out into our saltmarshes to have an up-close encounter with this amazing plant. Outside Hilton Head offers guided tours via boat, kayak or paddleboard that can introduce you to all the keystone elements of the Lowcountry saltmarsh ecosystem. MARCH

GOLF

MUSINGS

Enjoy every moment out on the course this month. By Doug Weaver, Director of Instruction, Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy

March is an ideal time of year to play golf on Hilton Head Island. Here are a few thoughts to keep in mind when you’re out on the green this month:

M - MUSIC

Music and golf are remarkably similar. Confucius observed that, “Music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without.” That same pleasure can be found on the golf course as well. Golf is truly a creative, artistic experience with a distinctive rhythm. A golfer experiences exhilaration by creating dynamic ball flight in the air, and encouraging the ball to roll toward the hole on the green grass. Virtually every athlete, business person and musician loves golf. Golf produces a kind of pleasure that humans should not do without.

A - ART

Art and golf have many parallels. Artist Joan Miro once observed, “You can look at a picture for a week and never think of it again. You can also look at the picture for a second and think of it all your life.” The same principle applies on the golf course. You can hit a golf shot terribly and forget about it. You can also hit the next ball perfectly and never forget it and revel in that moment for years to come. As Scott Adams said, “Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.” The same is true in golf. Golf is about making mistakes and learning to overcome them so you can move on to experience joy.

R - RECREATION

Recreation is the heart and soul of golf. Because golf is a recreational sport, when we finish we can be refreshed physically, mentally and spiritually. When we walk the course, we breathe in oxygen that boosts 56 Island Events March 2019

our mood, increases stamina, improves our mental alertness and promotes healthy sleep. When playing golf correctly, our muscles stretch and contract, making us more flexible, supple and elastic, and minimizing our chances of injury while improving our balance. Spiritually, golf challenges each of us to live our lives with integrity, self-acceptance and unconditional love.

C - CULTURE

Golf has a fundamental culture and lifestyle that promotes longevity. There was a study done of the 100 wealthiest people in the world, compared to the 100 best golfers in the world. Which group lived longer? The wealthy group had access to the best health care available. Nevertheless, the golfers lived significantly longer. Some researchers believe it may be because golfers have learned to relax and accept their mistakes. Proper golf activity is rhythmic, fluid and low impact. Golfing promotes blood flow, balance and proper body weight, while reducing stress and improving sleep patterns.

H - HAVE FUN

Have fun and live longer by accepting yourself for who God created you to be. Be the best you can be on and off the golf course! See you out on the green! A former PGA Tour pro and member of the local golf Hall of Fame, Doug Weaver is the Director of Instruction at the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy. He conducts “Where Does the Power Come From?,” a free clinic and demonstration, every Monday at 4 p.m. (843) 785-1138, (800) 827-3006 or www.palmettodunes.com. hiltonhead.com
