The Lau Group - FijiFrom the helm
It is all go here in Christchurch as we ramp up for the SailGP. It has been a huge learning experience for me being part of a team organising such a large scale event, and everyone here in the South Island is super excited to be seeing the F50's racing on Lyttelton Harbour! Something we have never experienced before. When the SailGP is all over, I am looking forward to heading up to Whangarei to wave off the Rally to Japan fleet, and it is also now only two months to go until the Pacific Rally departs as well!
My role as On Water Operations Manager for the event has been interesting and challenging. I am looking after all the volunteers on the water, training the course marshals, working with the on water police, & harbourmaster, sourcing boats for various roles, helping coorindate the Inspire youth coaching program, working out where people can and can't anchor to avoid snagging any of the underwater infrastructure, working out which VHF channels we can use, working out a plan for berthing all the boats, selling the on water flags, dealing with super yachts & charter boats and everything else in between
We've had amazing support from Christchurch NZ and the Christchurch City Council who have done an incredible job with preparing the site and helping with all the logistics and permits required
The SailGP ship arrived last week and the site build of grandstands, marquees, team bases etc is well underway.
Many of the South Island Rally boats are heading down to watch the racing and we ' ve got a party planned on the Peninsula this upcoming weekend prior to the event. They've also been invited to some events to get along to meet the teams as well. It will be heaps of fun.
If you missed out on tickets, the racing will also be broadcast live on Sky as well as Channel Three and on YouTube free to air.
We've got a few different groups on the Pacific Rally this time Some heading to French Polynesia, some to Tonga and some to Fiji. Some are joining later, and others are meeting us up there.
We've got an exclusive Lau Group entry planned for early July, and another one at Mystery Island for those wanting to spend some time exploring Vanuatu.
We are working with Down Under Rally on a Loyalty Island Rally as well in New Caledonia at the end of August
You are welcome to join us for the whole rally or just pick and choose from the various exclusive entries if you wish. It makes it heaps easier to explore some of these amazing destinations, without having to sail past to check in to the country first
Please get in touch ASAP if you'd like to join us as we are just in the process of finalising numbers and details - particularly for the Lau entry.
I've also been closely following the progress of the SSANZ Round North Island Race This tough two-handed marathon has just arrived in Waikawa overnight, and we ' ve got a number of Island Cruising Members participating. I wish them and all the other competitors all the very best for the third and final leg back to Auckland which is about to start in the next couple of days.
Anyway I hope you enjoy the newsletter this month. Thanks to all our awesome sponsors who have got some great deals this month too!
Cheers Viki

We are excited to announce that the Pacific Rally has been granted permission to run the Lau Group entry this season.
Early July, we will fly the Fijian officials out to Lau where they'll meet boats who will sail across from Tonga to Lau. The benefit of entering at Lau makes the ocean passage much quicker, and more convenient for people wanting to enjoy this special part of Fiji.

Information for Liveaboard Sailors about Census Day
Tuesday 7 March 2023
The New Zealand Census of Population and Dwellings is happening on Census Day, Tuesday 7 March 2023.
The census is the official count of people in Aotearoa New Zealand and the places where they live or are staying. Everyone who is staying overnight in Aotearoa New Zealand on 7 March 2023, including overseas visitors, must fill in a census form.
We need your support to help us count everyone on census night Each person staying on board a yacht is required under the Data and Statistics Act 2022 to complete a census form on the night of Tuesday, 7 March 2023.
Census forms will be delivered to marinas around the country. If however you are in the situation where you do not meet a census collector (for example on the South Island Rally or sailing to Lyttelton for SailGP) and you have cellphone reception, you can call 0800 CENSUS (0800 236 787) to request an internet access code be sent to your cellphone via SMS. You can then go online to fill in your forms.
Answering questions about ‘address’
Question 5 “Where do you usually live?”
• If you are visiting New Zealand and usually live overseas, provide the name of the country where you usually live.
• If you live in New Zealand, provide the full address where you usually live.
Question 7: “On the night of Tuesday 7 March 2023, which address are you at?”
• Provide the address, as fully as you can, of where the yacht is anchored/moored.
Thank you for doing your part Thank you for your time, effort, and cooperation to ensure the 2023 Census is a success.
Special thanks to the Supporters of the Rally!

OPPORTUNITY OPPORTUNITY
Cruising the Med
ICNZ members are invited to express their interest in cruising the Med this year for flexible periods during July, August and September of this year. The boat is a Beneteau Oceanis 46 in excellent condition with 3 double cabins and 2 heads with showers plus outdoor shower on the scoop. All bedding supplied as it's too hot for sleeping bags!
Proposal
Easy sailing with day hops discovering little villages around the coast. Precise itinerary TBA but likely to be in Western Med, Spain, France, Italy. Time to be spent exploring interesting places, hanging out in cafes watching the world go by and dining out at local restaurants etc. Swimming off the boat at anchor.
Costs to you are a share of marina fees and food on board and of course your meals ashore but other costs rest with me.
(Just as background, we enjoyed 4 seasons, 2015/2018 on our NZ yacht, Shalimar, sailing around the Med and we became addicted. Hence why we're going back!)
To find out more, please contact Bill Mathews 021 459560 or billmathews.21@gmail.com

GULF HARBOUR RADIO
Ocean Cruising Club Award Winners
The OCC Award, which is open to all including nonmembers, recognises service to the ocean cruising community as a whole, is awarded to Patricia Dallas & David Sapiane of NZ.
Gulf Harbour Radio is a New Zealand licensed coast radio station run by Patricia Dallas and David Sapiane from Gulf Harbour near Auckland. Every season since 2012 they have supported international cruisers on their passages to and from NZ and the South Pacific with their daily SSB schedule.
They run their service voluntarily, provide local advice, weather analysis, and forecasting, and assist where people need support. They also live-stream their broadcast on YouTube so that friends and family can tune in to listen to the vessels checking in. They are wonderful people, incredibly generous, and very supportive of OCC members and other cruisers in the South Pacific. They are very worthy of being recognised for all their hard work.
This small but powerful GPS Tracker is custom designed from the ground up, with extra features to make your coastal and offshore tracking, data and communications easier than ever.

Preparations are underway to deploy the YWAM KOHA again to Fiji. Our theme for this year is to “Go Again Better.” As a medical ship, we are keenly aware that we are only just getting started. If you’ve followed us for a while, you know it was a challenge to go the first time. It is a new challenge to go again. We are up for this challenge and want to be more effective and even more efficient at delivering holistic health outcomes for the beautiful people of Fiji.
We plan to increase our deployment time from three months to four months. This will allow us to add three additional outreaches–enabling us to serve 50% more people than we did last year. Planning meetings are happening with our key partners in Fiji. The Ministry of Health and Medical Services is excited for us to return and partner with them to deliver health outcomes in the maritime regions of their nation
Join Us in Empowering Health in the Pacific
If you are interested in serving with us in Fiji on one of the outreaches between June and October, please contact us here. We are especially looking for dentists and dental assistants, mariners (with the correct qualifications) and administrators to help run the clinics. When you register your interest, we will communicate more details with you as they become available.

Sailing from one island to another has been a way of life for Maldivians for ages. Because there are few written documents from the early period, information about the early sailors is hazy and difficult to come by in the Maldives. However, several foreign notifications do exist, and these provide some insight on the Maldives' lengthy history of shipping and sailing.
Rafts were once the only way to travel between islands inside an atoll. However, larger distances were covered by boats with sails made of palm leaf Later, cloth sails were utilized instead.
The material that is currently available about the Maldives' pre-Portuguese era clearly demonstrates that the sea and seafaring were major aspects of the Maldivians' existence. This was expected given the nation's preponderance of water and scarcity of land. If the islanders were to coexist in harmony with their surroundings, they had to incorporate the ocean into their daily life. Since the early settlers came by water, it stands to reason that they must have had prior knowledge of and experience at sea as it was necessary to travel between the islands.
“Savaadheeththa Dhathuru” (aka The Great Journey) was created with the aim of preserving Maldivian culture and legacy for our country's future generations.
The Savaadheeththa Dhathuru – Maldives Yacht Rally offers the chance to discover the wonder and beauty that is the Maldives. If not by traveling the seas from island to island like our forefathers had done, what better way is there to explore the Maldives? So, join us on this rally and experience true Maldives.

Hydrovane
What do people say about theirs?
By Sarah Curry of Hydrovane International MarineWe were ecstatic with our choice of the Hydrovane as backup steering, it had proved itself as a wind pilot, as a spare steering autopilot system for when under the engine and even if under sail without using it as a wind pilot A truly remarkable piece of equipment and investment Read the whole story here.

Open Ocean Watermakers has been manufacturing watermakers in the beautiful Bay of Islands of New Zealand since 2001 Terry Forsbrey is the owner of Open Ocean. He and his wife Ariel lived aboard their yacht for 22 years and actively cruised offshore for 12 of those years. During their time on the water, Terry discovered that high tech components in a watermaker are not only unnecessary, they are usually the first thing to break down, and most often in remote locations When helping out other cruisers, he frequently found that by-passing these components would get their watermakers working once again That's when he realized that a simple, reliable, and affordablewatermaker could be made
Terry developed the early version of an engine driven model and took it cruising He put it to the test for five years He then returned to New Zealand to design and build a reliable watermaker without any superfluous gadgets Thus was born a revolutionary new concept in watermakers One that works all the time, is easy to operate, and doesn’t break the bank
Island Cruising NZ members get a $300 discount on a new water maker from Open Ocean!
