10 Ways to Cultivate Confidence in Your Child
Building self-confidence in children is a multifaceted journey that requires patience, consistency, and a deep understanding of their unique needs and abilities. As a parent, you are the key to unlocking your child’s potential and helping to foster a strong sense of selfworth that will serve them well throughout their lives. Here are ten key strategies to help nurture your child’s self-confidence and empower them to thrive in all aspects of their development.
1. Promote Positive Self-Talk and Self-Reflection: Encourage your child to develop a positive inner dialogue by challenging their negative thoughts and beliefs. Teach them to recognize their strengths, talents and accomplishments, and help them understand that setbacks and failures are opportunities for them to grow and learn. Foster a habit of selfreflection, where they can assess their progress, celebrate successes and identify areas for improvement without harsh self-judgment.
2. Set Realistic and Achievable Goals: Work together with your child to set goals that are challenging yet attainable based on their interests, abilities and developmental stage. Break larger goals into smaller, manageable steps and create a roadmap for achieving them. Encourage them to take ownership of their goals and celebrate each milestone along the way, fostering a sense of accomplishment and motivation to continue striving for success.
3. Celebrate All Achievements: Create a culture of celebration in your home by acknowledging and honoring your child’s achievements, no matter how small. Whether it’s mastering a new skill, showing kindness to others or persevering through a difficult challenge, take the time to recognize their efforts and express genuine pride in their accomplishments. Celebrating success boosts their confidence and reinforces their belief in their abilities.
4. Provide Specific and Constructive Feedback: Offer feedback that is specific, constructive and focused on effort,
progress and behavior rather than innate qualities or abilities. Highlight what your child did well and offer gentle guidance on areas where they can improve. Encourage them to view feedback as a valuable tool for growth and development, rather than as a criticism or judgment.
5. Lead by Example: Be a positive role model for your child by demonstrating confidence, resilience and a growth mindset in your own attitudes and behaviors. Show them how to navigate challenges with optimism and determination. Model healthy self-care practices such as self-compassion, mindfulness and stress management. Your actions speak louder than words, and your child will learn valuable lessons from observing how you approach life’s ups and downs.
6. Encourage Exploration and RiskTaking: Create a safe and supportive environment where your child feels comfortable exploring new activities, trying new things and taking healthy risks. Encourage them to step out of their comfort zone, embrace challenges and learn from both successes and failures. Teach them that setbacks are a normal part of the learning process and an opportunity to build resilience and perseverance.
7. Promote Independence and Responsibility: Empower your child to make decisions, solve problems and take responsibility for their actions within appropriate boundaries. Encourage autonomy and independence by giving them opportunities to learn from their mistakes and experience the natural consequences of their choices. Provide guidance and support as needed but allow them the freedom to learn and grow through trial and error.
8. Provide a Supportive and Nurturing Environment: Foster a loving, accepting and supportive home environment where your child feels valued, respected and safe to express themselves authentically. Cultivate open communication, active listening and empathy within the family, and encourage your child to share their thoughts, feelings and concerns without fear of judgment
or criticism. Be their biggest cheerleader and source of unconditional love and support.
9. Teach Coping Skills and Resilience: Equip your child with the tools and strategies they need to cope effectively with stress, anxiety and adversity. Teach them relaxation techniques, mindfulness practices and problem-solving skills to help them manage their emotions and navigate difficult situations with resilience and confidence. Encourage them to seek support from trusted adults and peers when needed and remind them that they can overcome any challenge they may encounter.
10. Encourage Positive Social Connections: Support your child in developing positive relationships with their peers by encouraging positive social interactions, collaboration and teamwork. Encourage them to participate in activities such as sports, clubs or community service where they can connect with others who share their interests and values. Teach them valuable social skills such as empathy, communication and conflict resolution, and help them navigate the complexities of peer relationships with confidence and integrity.

Family Sunday: Curiosity, Creativity & Community Building
AGGV’s new Family Sunday Coordinator, illustrator, designer, and art educator, Apr il Caverhill, has been working with a range of artists to bring engaging online content to our Family Sunday community. “Knowing our virtual format makes Family Sunday accessible to an even wider audience than our in-person gatherings is an unexpected side benefit of our digital iteration”.
Since October, our guests have included guerilla gardeners, opera singers, improv artists, and eco-warriors. All of these dynamic guests have given us entertaining insight into what they do, while offering up delightful interactive activities for our viewers. Our line-up of Family Sunday guests for the next several months is equally exciting, so please check out our website for upcoming video releases every third Sunday of the month (October-June): aggv.ca/ events
Of course, we’re all looking forward to when that time comes to gather in the Gallery once again for some fabulous hands-on family fun! We wish you all a new season filled with hope and artistic abundance.
In response to COVID-19, the AGGV has introduced a new way for families to explore the AGGV collection: Meetups. Don't miss Parent and Tot, every third Thursday of the month from 10am-10:45am. Adults $2.50, children free. Please sign up in advance: aggv.ca/meetups-at-the-aggv

Top 5 Farms to Visit on the Island
Little Qualicum Cheese Works
Morningstar Farm in Parksville is home to Little Qualicum Cheeseworks. Guests can enjoy free self-guided tours, a farmgate store, visiting small and large animals and Canada's first “milk on tap” dispenser. Visit the gals in the dairy barn, learn about their milking robot and say hello to calves, sheep, goats and a variety of other friendly animals. Check out their “Mooseum” and old milking parlour, where you can see some vintage dairy equipment, photos, videos about their cheese and watch the livestream of their cows. Then purchase some of their handcrafted artisan cheese, made on their farm with milk from their happy herd of grass-fed cows. Learn more at cheeseworks.ca.
Sea Cider Farm & Ciderhouse
Sea Cider is a farm-based cidery located on the Saanich Peninsula just minutes from Victoria. This family-owned orchard and ciderhouse grows organic cider apples and strives to produce award-winning cider. They are a small farm with a big heart and want to deliver an exceptional experience. Relax at the cider house, and drink in the panoramic water views overlooking the orchard across the Haro Straight to James Island. The Ciderhouse is open for tastings and tours year-round. Enjoy a flight of ciders paired with organic cheese and other local delectables. Learn more at seacider.ca.
Holly Hill Farm
Holly Hill Farm is an interactive and vast petting farm located in the heart of Campbell River. From Christmas Stables with Santa to Easter Extravaganza and Pumpkin Patch, there is always something fun happening at the farm. Guests are invited to explore and immerse themselves in a free-ranging barnyard while holding chickens, snuggling baby bunnies, brushing mini
goats and hand-feeding a friendly alpaca and horse. On lucky occasions, guests can even witness the birth of a newborn sheep or goat. Developing into a cultural and agricultural hub of Campbell River, Holly Hill Farm also offers birthday parties, summer camps, tot programs and educational after-school programs. Learn more at hollyhillfarmcampbellriver.com.
Tugwell Creek Honey Farm & Meadery
Tugwell Creek Honey Farm and Meadery was licenced in 2003 as the first meadery in Western Canada. At their oceanside honey farm, they hand craft quality meads (honey wines) from local honey. Meadmaker Bob Liptrot has kept bees since the age of six and has been making mead for over 35 years. Taste their award-winning meads and honey. They use local berries for their mead, mostly from the farm, and their honey comes from within a 20km radius. Tugwell now boasts a museum-quality exhibit, interactive displays and a self-guided audio tour. Learn more at tugwellcreekfarm.com.
Westholme Tea Company
At Westholme Tea Company, they curate experiences. They take pride in cultivating their home-grown leaves, blending the finest organic teas from carefully sourced farms and hand-crafting ceramics to accompany the flavours. Westholme is the first commercial organic grower of the tea plant (Camellia sinensis) in Canada. The tea shop, gallery and tearoom are yours to experience at Canada’s only tea farm…steeped in nature. The Westholme Teashop and Gallery lives in what used to be an old dairy barn. The gallery displays co-owner Margit Nellemann’s unique and eclectic ceramic creations. Margit builds her pieces using slab and coiling techniques. Each piece is completely individual in its personality, and each is a joy to see and to use. Learn more at westholmetea.com.

5 GREAT Study Habits Every Kid Should Know
Throughout my career as a teacher, I have taught students from kindergarten to grade 7, and adults as well. Funny, even as a schoolteacher I taught children the same successful habits that I learned throughout my studies while obtaining two university degrees— habits that seem to work well at any age. Being an educator for over 23 years has taught me a lot about learning—good and bad habits.
Whether your child is getting ready for a grade one spelling test, or a firstyear university psychology final, here are five great study habits every kid should know—and they all fit perfectly into the acronym: G.R.E.A.T.
1. Give yourself enough time to study.
Plan it. Schedule it. And start early. Plan a study block of time or study schedule so that you are only studying during those planned blocks and taking breaks when you are not. This helps you to avoid cramming.
How: Use a visual schedule to chunk your time into blocks, this gives you the ability to be productive instead of worrying about all the things you need to do. Plus, you know that there is a start and end to each task. It takes away the anxiety and helps you plan out your studying.
2. Rest up with enough sleep.
When your child sleeps well, it helps them to process the information they learned that day. Studying before going to sleep has been a proven way to retain more information, so the trick is to study before you go to sleep.
Research has proven that sleep helps to retain the memories we form throughout the day. And conversely, being awake disrupts the processing of memories and causes us to forget some of what we’ve memorized or learned. Therefore, avoid pulling all-nighters.
3. Exercise has a great effect on thinking, memory, comprehension and reasoning.
When we exercise, it activates our sympathetic nervous system. This is the part of your nervous system or brain that helps your body deal with stress. Your brain in response fills with extra blood, rich in oxygen and nutrients, which then helps you to make big important decisions!
Also, the part of your brain called the hippocampus is stimulated during exer-
cise. This part of the brain is important for reasoning and memory. So, exercise helps in the short-term by improving cognition (thinking and memory), and longterm regular exercise can actually slow the aging process (or shrinking) of the hippocampus—hugely important!
Exercise is also a great stress-reducer. The bottom line is that exercise increases blood flow in your brain, and this directly relates to how well you retain information. The blood flow helps improve concentration and memory is triggered more effectively too.

LEARN
How: Right before a test, take a brisk walk around the block, or do 30 jumping jacks. The blood flow will help your brain to work much better during the test. Studying after sports practice is a good idea too.
4. Arrange a study area, with easy access to supplies, in a quiet space.
Set up a place that is uncluttered, if possible, a regular study spot that has a desk with bright light. Research shows that the brighter it is, the more focused and alert you will be when studying. Have a plant. Studies show that a plant in the room will increase your productivity by 15 percent.
5. Take breaks and reward yourself at the end of each study block.
Have you ever felt like you were reading the same paragraph over and over again but not absorbing what you were reading? We have all done it. When you break up long study sessions you will actually help your focus.
Research shows that when people try to focus on a single task for a long period of time, concentration lessens, and minds start to wander. Having a visual reward (a reward like a treat after each chapter
you read) has been proven to increase motivation.
How: When you are studying, take short breaks of about five minutes. This will help you regain focus and study more effectively. Reward yourself by placing a treat on your desk for when you complete the study block of time. (ie: a piece of dark chocolate or any healthy brain snack).
Try one or two or all five of these habits and this year will be a much better learning experience for sure!

Fun, Easy & Fast Lunch Ideas
Because I rise earlier than my wife, I have become the designated lunch packer for our daughter on the days when she is heading to school or camp. When she was younger and only attending preschool two days a week, or doing the occasional day camp, I found lots of options and was able to be more creative in my lunch packing. However now that she requires lunch almost every weekday, year-round, I certainly appreciate simplicity when it comes to lunch prep. It’s become even more difficult over the past few years because of peanut and seafood allergies in her classes and most camps tend to come with the “nut free snack” stipulation. Here are some easy and enjoyable lunch ideas that are fun, fairly nutritious—and best of all, fast and easy to pack.
1. Leftovers. Hopefully we have some pasta, stir fry or whatever dinner we’ve made the night before left, so I can simply reheat it in the morning and put it in a thermos. The food is still hot four hours later, so she can enjoy it. Don’t forget to include a fork—I won’t make that mistake twice!
2. Sandwich Fixins. I pack some bread, deli meat, cheese slices, cut up veggies and a small container of mayo or mustard. My daughter can then assemble her sandwich just the way she likes it. However, I think she often eats it all separately, instead of making it into a sandwich, but that’s perfectly fine.
3. Kraft Dinner. Here’s where the thermos comes in handy again. I cook up a box of KD while I’m making my coffee and breakfast, then put it in the thermos while hot. It may not be the healthiest meal, but it is a quick and easy treat for those days we are overdue for a grocery run and don’t have much in the house.
4. Snack Box. I simply fill a lunchbox with a mix of my
child’s favorite snacks—or whatever bits and pieces I can find. Think pretzels, cheese sticks, crackers, slices of meat, grapes and baby carrots. This is another great option when you’ve been too busy to hit the store—you can use up the last few things in your fridge.
5. Hummus and Veggie Sticks. I pack a container of hummus (occasionally our hummus is homemade, but usually it’s those little pre-packs you can find at Walmart or Costco) along with sliced bell peppers, cucumbers and carrots for dipping. I’m lucky that my daughter likes veggies, but you can always include crackers if your kids won’t eat them.
6. Hard Boiled Eggs. We try to make a bunch of hard-boiled eggs at the beginning of the week to keep in the fridge for easy and quick snacks or a grab and go breakfast. My daughter will eat the whole hard-boiled egg totally plain; however, you have the option of quickly slicing them and putting them on some veggies with a shake of salt and pepper. Or if you have a bit more time, mash them and mix them with mayo to make egg salad sandwiches.
7. Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches. This classic is great for those days when peanuts are accepted where she is going. Of course, you can always use a different type of nut butter or even sunflower butter to make this quick and easy snack.
Brandon White is a dad who lives in Victoria. When he is not busy making lunches and driving his daughter to and from school or camp you will find him repairing and restoring electronics and listening to good tunes.

Sustainable Celebrations
Top 5 Tips for a Green Birthday Party
If you’re part of a family that likes to host birthday parties, it can be surprising to see how much single-use plastic and garbage come from our celebrations. Fortunately, there are a few eco-friendly tweaks we can make to our birthday traditions that can ease the burden on the environment - and on our wallets. A green party is a great way to celebrate our children of all ages while caring for our planet.
1. Think of Green Themes
Hosting a party with a green theme can be great for us Islanders because we are so lucky to have the beauty of nature right at our doorsteps. Host at your favourite neighbourhood park, do a nature scavenger hunt or throw the party in your back yard. Consider setting up a gardening station where the kids plant their own seeds (this can make a great environmentally friendly take-home favour, too!). For indoor parties, booking at a recreation centre or fun activity business makes a great choice because they often provide low waste activities—like using gymnasium equipment, escape rooms, laser tag or karaoke machines. If you’re hosting an indoor party in your home, you can play board games, host a movie night or have a mini spa day. These can be low-waste, high-fun options!
2. Use Reusable Decorations
When you’re in charge of decorations, think about what you can use that won’t be discarded after the party. So much of what we see online includes elaborate balloon arches and flimsy decorations that are so specific to a theme or character that kids are likely to outgrow by next year. To combat this, opt for secondhand decorations from friends, thrift stores or online marketplaces! If buying new, consider purchasing sturdy materials that can withstand being folded up and stored—like fabric birthday banners without specific characters. For those who enjoy crafting, making party decorations is a wonderful way to utilize material scraps and add a personal touch to the party.
3. Ditch the Disposable Items
Disposable cutlery and plates often end up in a huge garbage bag at the end of a party. A great way to reduce waste is to get reusable serving items. If you’re able to stock up at the thrift store or discount store, there can be an incredible trove of serving dishes, plates, cups and more, that can be purchased at a low cost and used for years to come. If convenience is of top importance, compostable plates and cutlery are an excellent way to make clean-up quick, without sacrificing the environment.
4. Give Out Greener Goodie Bags
Goodie bags have long been a cherished birthday party tradition. Unfortunately, many goodie bags include an abundance of plastic toys that don’t provide much play value. While it’s important to show gratitude at the end of the party, this is a great
opportunity to make our party traditions more environmentally friendly. It helps to think of quality over quantity—there’s no rule against giving one or two more practical or longer-lasting items to each guest instead of a bag full of fun-for-a-moment “stuff.” While the best options will depend on the age group and budget, a keychain, wooden puzzle or a package of garden seeds all make for greener party favours.
5. Rethink Presents
Finding environmentally friendly gifts can also be challenging. Kids are so excited to receive presents but presents often come with an abundance of waste. Many toys are made of, packaged in and gift-wrapped in plastic or other materials that are hard to recycle or reuse. Not to mention you then have a stack of toys to clutter up your home. When sending invitations, consider requesting $5 (or another amount you deem appropriate) for your child to put towards purchasing a gift they really want, or to contribute to a charity of their choice.
Whether tackling just one of these green birthday party tips, or mastering all of them, every eco-friendly improvement makes an impact. Party ideas are often contagious—so any green changes you make will hopefully catch on quickly with other families. Simple steps can build momentum that leads to many positive changes and continued sustainable celebrations!

8 Tips for Co-parenting Effectively
Afamily is more than the sum of its parts; it’s an emotional and psychological ecosystem whose healthy functioning depends on the harmony among its elements, especially parents. But so often, we act in the same ways as the adults we’ve witnessed in our own childhood, and these patterns can interfere with our ability to embody the qualities that a healthy partnership requires when co-parenting.
After all, it’s hard to be mindful and emotionally open when alarm bells from our past are ringing loudly. But, consciously moving into intentional and collaborative parenting can be made so much easier with a plan for change.
1) When co-parenting, expect conflict now and then. A clash in parenting styles is unavoidable from time to time, but that doesn’t mean that the relationship is in trouble. When you notice your emotions (or those of your partner) rising, take a moment to determine where the issue fits into your parenting priorities before continuing. There’s a wide divide between your ideal solution and the unacceptable, with a lot of room in between for compromise.
2) Aim for a speedy resolution. One of the best predictors of a happy family is swift conflict resolution, even if that means agreeing to disagree. Children (especially those with a sensitive temperament) are highly attuned to parent-to-parent interactions—their survival relies on it. When you resolve Big Life Journal Growth Mindset Conversation Cards issues quickly without allowing your ego to get in the way, you teach your children the art of acceptance and compromise. This is a gift for any child. If necessary, put a time limit on the discussion and agree to revisit it later to safeguard your child’s sense of stability.
3) Help children make sense of your disagreement. I’m always amazed when I realize just how much my children are absorbing. Even wearing headphones and sitting in another room, they will readily pick up that something’s up, even from a whisper. When we all do our best to avoid arguing within earshot of our children, they inevitably notice our transgressions. Instead of ignoring the hot-button moment, use it as an opportunity to build understanding. Children often blame themselves for their parents’ quarrels—especially when they are the subject of the conflict.
Children need to know that disagreements are a normal part of any relationship, and that as long as there is mutual respect and healthy ground rules for communication, they don’t have to be scary. It’s reassuring for your kids to see that while you may not always like what someone says or does, you are always ready to make amends.
4) Give priority to a family routine. Researchers at Syracuse University have confirmed something my grandmother has been saying for years: families that remain connected, thrive. After reviewing a multitude of studies, Spagnola and Fiese reported that when families eat breakfast and dinner together, and maintain some kind of family routine, everyone gains. Children in these families are healthier overall, parents feel
more satisfied with their marriage and both parents and children are less stressed.
When you routinely cuddle up with your child to read at the end of the day or spend every Sunday hiking together, your special family activities provide more than fun—they provide security as everyone inherently senses the unity and connection deepening.
5) Co-parenting means moving from auto-pilot to copilot. The role of parenting can often fall on the shoulders of one parent in particular, which can naturally lead to resentment or feelings of alienation on either end of the partnership. When it comes to major parenting decisions, try to press the pause button before jumping in to take care of it yourself. Instead, take a minute or two to sneak away to another room and have a quick conversation with your partner about how you’d like to address the tough issue together. Then, schedule in regular times to consciously discuss both parenting hurdles and how you’d like to better balance your parenting roles and responsibilities.
6) Present a united front. Children develop many strategies for getting what they want, including exploiting weak spots in their parents’ relationship. When your children complain to you about your partner, use that opportunity to teach them how to address issues directly. Encourage them to share their frustration with the person they are angry with so they learn to take responsibility for their feelings rather than simply blowing off steam.
When children see that their attempt to have you overrule your partner (or vice versa) isn’t working, they experience firsthand that while you may empathize with their feelings, you are united in your parenting.
7) It’s important to stay connected when co-parenting. According to relationship specialist and researcher John Gottman, almost 70 percent of couples describe feeling less satisfied with their marriage after having their first child. With the many demands of parenting leaving little time for intimacy, it can be difficult for parents to remain connected to themselves, let alone to each other. Committing to kid-free time together sends the message that you value your partnership and the foundation it provides for the whole family.
8) Look for new solutions. One of the most important things to remember when problem solving together is this: “the problem” isn’t the real problem; the old solution is the problem. By looking at what hasn’t worked, you can avoid making the same mistakes and finding yourselves in exactly the same position again and again. Instead, brainstorm together, talk to friends, take an attachment-focused parenting course or try couples’ counselling. Do whatever it takes to keep the conversation open while co-parenting, and you’re sure to find success in working together.
