A Flatlander’s Guide to Maine by Mark Scott Ricketts
A flatlander, by definition (at least by our definition) is anyone not originally from Maine. We forgive them. Really, we do. In fact, we want to help. A Flatlander’s Guide to Maine offers visitors, transplants, wary guests, native animal species, and anyone else uninitiated in the ways of the Pine Tree State a well-researched and finely illustrated educational guidebook. Readers will learn about the state’s culture, attractions, animals, plants, history, lingo, and many other important aspects of Maine life. We are confident this book will make your visit more intellectually fulfilling and will enhance your Vacationland experience. Okay, okay, actually this book is mostly a lot of humorous drawings, silly cartoons, and made-up stories written and illustrated by the uber-talented Mark Scott Ricketts. (Yes, he’s a flatlander, but he’s wicked funny. Check him out at www.mscottricketts.com.) If you learn anything, that’s on you. But it is ALL about Maine, and we 100% stand by our claim that it will make your visit more fun, and you WILL laugh. (P.S. Natives will love it, too!)

As I walked through the maze of poles where the majority of the traps were located, I suddenly found myself plunging down
through the ice and into the icy cold water below. I was completely surrounded by the heavy spring-loaded traps attached to the set poles. Everything happened so quickly. I instinctively extended my arms, catching myself on what little thin ice remained around me, still clutching the chisel in one hand. I was hanging midway up to my chest in the freezing water as I heard the ice cracking under the strain of my weight. With snowshoes firmly attached to my feet,

Further Adventures of a Game Warden in Maine by John Ford Sr. Not only was John Ford’s first book, Suddenly, the Cider Didn’t Taste So Good a smash hit, so was John! He spent much of 2012 entertaining and delighting audiences across Maine with a mix of serious, hilarious, and often self-deprecating tales of his adventures as both a Maine Game Warden and a Sheriff. As one reviewer wrote after seeing John in person, “Even if you only find his book is half as good as his standup comedy routine—as funny as anything you’re likely to see—you’ll find it worth the read.” Trust us, it is worth the read. And now he is back with more wonderful, and more importantly, genuine, stories in This Cider Still Tastes Funny.

Suddenly, the Cider Didn’t Taste So Good
Adventures of a Game Warden in Maine By John Ford Sr. Retired Maine Game Warden John Ford has seen it all. He’s been shot at by desperate prison escapees, been outwitted by wily trappers, and rescued scores of animals. As a tenacious and successful warden, he was always willing to spend the time needed to nab violators of the state’s fish and game laws. At the same time, though, he wasn’t a cold, heartless, go-by-the-book enforcer; he usually had a good quip ready when he slipped the handcuffs on a violator, and he wasn’t above accepting a lesson learned as sufficient penalty for breaking the law. Paul Reynolds journeys back along the path of his life to revisit and share with readers many of his outdoor experiences. Reynolds was introduced to the outdoors by his father, Harvard Reynolds, in the 1940s. Harvard took his son to many of his own favorite hunting and fishing spots, helping give birth to his son’s lifelong love affair with the outdoors. Later, Harvard eventually took his son to his first smoke-filled hunting camp, where amber liquid flowed and profanity filled the room. Reynolds soon understood how the outdoors could bestow both the love of nature and the joy of friendship. U.S. $16.95 ISBN: 978-1-934031-64-3 Nonfiction, softcover, 5.5 x 8.5

Astrid Sheckels
The Fish House Door
We first met Astrid several years ago at an illustrator’s show in Portland, Maine. The twenty-something artist had never illustrated a book, but we were blown away by her talent. So, we tucked away her samples and went searching for the perfect story. When The Scallop Christmas came across our desk, we knew it was the perfect opportunity for her first book. Just a few years later, she is practically a veteran, and we are thrilled to publish her first book as both author AND illustrator. With Nic and Nellie, Astrid returns again to the coast, and the result is both sweet and breathtaking.
Written by Robert Baldwin Illustrated by Astrid Sheckels Shawn’s father, grandfather, and greatgrandfather have hauled traps, painted buoys, and cleaned brushes on the same fish house door for decades. To Shawn, the door is just a weathered old piece of wood with broken hinges. But an island visitor gives Shawn a new perspective—and a fresh look at the people and traditions that have shaped his past and will chart his future. Times were tough in Marcie’s small New England fishing village. No one had money, and work was hard to find. So the villagers rejoiced one glorious fall when an unexpected bounty of scallops filled their little bay. For young Marcie, a week harvesting scallops also brought unexpected and unforgettable adventure and lessons about love and what is really important. Nic rolled a beach stone in her hands. The rock was so smooth and so round and so pretty. The ocean had rolled it against other rocks, wearing down every bump and rough edge. Mom said that holding an island rock in her hands always made her feel like she was home. Nic filled her pockets with rocks. She tossed and turned in the dark room. She tightly clutched her raccoon and a beach rock, but a tear still slipped down her cheek.

Nic and Nellie
by Astrid Sheckels Everyone gets homesick. And Nic is no different. She’s so excited about spending the entire summer on a small New England island with her grandparents that she counts down the days through winter and spring. But when the grand adventure finally begins, she finds tears and loneliness instead of joy and freedom. Astrid Sheckels’s picture book Nic and Nellie is a gorgeously illustrated, heartwarming story of a girl and her beloved dog, Nellie, who slowly learn that new places really aren’t so scary, and that often friends can be found around every corner, even in old rowboats, tidal ponds, and stinky mudflats.

The Circle Paintings
Twenty-five years ago, Maine artist Dahlov Ipcar unveiled her first circle painting. Fascinated by images in a kaleidoscope, she painted circles within circles, each layer pulsing with energy, color, and patterns inspired by the natural world. Fourteen more circle paintings followed, each one with an animalistic theme ranging from the real to the imagined to the fanciful, from Australia to Asia, merry-go-rounds to blue moons. This calendar brings all fifteen of the paintings together to create a remarkable visual treat.

The Maine wildlife and coastal scenes are near and dear to her heart, and this new book serves as a kind of love letter to her home state, where she has lived and worked for almost 75 years, where, as she writes, “A is for animals, wild and free,” and W is for “woodlands of wonder for you and for me.”

wrote and illustrated her first children’s book at age nine and that’s when she decided that she would be a children’s book author and illustrator when she grew up. She pursued her passion for art at the School of the Worcester Art Museum, and her love of writing at Worcester State University, where she received a BFA in English and an MA in Education. She currently teaches applied arts, digital design, and traditional drawing and art history at Quinsigamond Community College. As a curious naturalist, she draws inspiration from the natural world and expresses it in her writing and painting. When she’s not teaching, writing, or painting, she can be found beachcombing along New England’s shores. A self-professed tomboy, she is fascinated not just by beautiful seashells and birds but also the underappreciated seaweed and rocks. She lives in central Massachusetts with her husband, two sons, and a garden full of birds.

From out of the sea, from out of the spray, the crab family’s going on holiday!
”
Don’t worry, be crabby! When Vermont author Brian Benoit was young, he would entertain his brother on long car trips with sea creature hand animals. Years later, he introduced the creatures to his own children, who loved hearing stories about the crab family. And the idea for Crustacean Vacation was born. We then paired Brian’s imaginative verses with the zany cartoons of New Hampshire illustrator Marty Kelley. The result: Crabtastic!
Crustacean Vacation
Written by Brian Benoit Illustrated by Marty Kelley From out of the sea, from out of the spray, The crab family’s going on holiday! And so begins a grand day out at the seashore, as a family of crabs ventures on land to picnic on the beach (yum, peanut butter and jellyfish!), play games in an arcade (not even a crab wins at The Claw), and slide and glide in a water park. This is no ordinary boardwalk. Here, a seagull runs the candy store, a shark sits in front of a tattoo parlor, a sea horse hawks prizes, and the water park’s lifeguard is an octopus. Join Mom, Dad, two crablets, and Grannie as they create holiday memories like no other. Young readers will delight in the clever rhyming verses paired with wacky and wonderful illustrations from the imagination of acclaimed New Hampshire artist Marty Kelley. He eventually hosted a show on Maine Public Television called In the Kitchen, wrote a book by the same name and released a popular album called Seagulls and Summer People. Kendall was also a successful folksinger. Three times he was voted Folksinger of the Year by the Maine Country Music Association, was inducted into the Maine Country Music Hall of Fame in 1995, and was nominated for a Grammy in 2009 for his role in the double CD, Singing through the Hard Times, a tribute to Utah Phillips. Bert and I
The iconic “Bert and I” stories were created by Yale students Marshall Dodge and Robert Bryan in the late 1950s and performed around campus. The two amateur storytellers soon recorded a short 10-inch album of 11 stories for friends and family, but ultimately pressed just a few hundred. However, in 1958, growing popularity prompted them to record and release the seminal commercial album of New England humor and storytelling: Bert and I . . . And Other Stories from Down East. Featuring 19 stories, the album depicted Maine fishermen and woodsmen with dry, classic humor and set the tone and direction of the genre for decades. Bert and I. . .The Book
By Marshall Dodge and Robert Bryan Bert and I . . . The Book features more than sixty classic “Bert and I” stories. The characters everyone loves and remembers are all here: Bert and his fellow fisherman, known only as “I”; Gagnon, World Champion Moose Caller; Virgil Bliss, the dirtiest man in Hancock County; Arnold Bunker, Kenneth Fowler, Camden Pierce, Harry Whitfield; and many more. The stories are drawn from five “Bert and I” albums recorded over nearly two decades, including the seminal Bert and I . . . And Other Stories from Down East, perhaps the most important comedy album in New England history. Bert and I . . . The Book also includes the first complete “Bert and I” discography, including original album art and liner notes, as well as an introduction by Rebecca Rule, a New Hampshire author and storyteller (Live Free and Eat Pie!, Headin’ for the Rhubarb!) who writes and performs stories in the grand tradition of “Bert and I.”

Strangers on the Beach
Josh Pahigian, who earned his MFA in creative writing from Emerson College, always loved writing and sports. Those two passions have led to seven baseball-related books, but he also kept his hand in fiction; he just needed to find the right idea for a book. After moving to Maine, he worked part-time in Old Orchard Beach, a job that helped him get to know the famed beach town. A short time later, he and his wife spent more than 40 summer days on the beach. That long, wonderful summer helped Pahigian develop an even better feel for the rhythms of the area and gain a good understanding of the local beach scene, allowing him to develop the authenticity he was seeking and the confidence necessary to write what would become his debut novel, Strangers on the Beach.
what
“Pahigian has constructed a complex thriller, filled with engaging and eccentric characters. . . . Twists and turns abound in this tale; the author adeptly dekes and dodges, keeping the reader guessing throughout. It’s the best kind of thriller—the kind that matters because the characters matter.”

“Strangers on the Beach is compelling reading . . . You just can’t make up stuff like this. Well, yes, Pahigian did make this up. I think. He did capture the essence of Old Orchard Beach, making the story believable to me . . . And you can believe this. You will really enjoy this novel.” —George Smith

Dahlov Ipcar is an American painter (born in 1917) who has enjoyed a dual career in fine art and in children’s books. Her paintings are in the permanent collections of numerous renowned museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and all the major museums of Maine. As a children’s book illustrator, she created a bold, striking style that helped change the role of artwork in children’s literature, where realism and fantasy can meet, happily and effortlessly, in the pages of a book. She has written more than 30 books for children, ten of which are available from Islandport Press. At 95, she still paints regularly. At a 2012 show of her work, an art critic and historian wrote, “Ipcar doesn’t just borrow ideas from other artists; like all the greats, she incorporates them into her own thinking. Americans tend to confuse originality and authenticity —overvaluing the former when what matters most is the latter. Invention follows authenticity, and Ipcar is absolutely an American original.”

Fourteen-year-old Haley is struggling to cope—with her stepmom and baby brother, with her beloved cousin’s terminal illness, with dropping grades at school. When she digs deep into her family history for a school project, she uncovers a disturbing New England tradition and a ghostly past. Haley must overcome her doubts and confront a vampire to save herself and her family. Mercy is inspired by a true story. Mercy Brown lived in Exeter, R.I., in the late 1890s, when the New England vampire tradition held powerful sway. When Mercy’s family members began to die, fear struck deep in the hearts of the small community. Following Mercy’s death, when her brother took sick, villagers convinced Mercy’s father to exhume her corpse, dig out her heart, burn it, and feed it to her brother. He too died—as Mercy had— from tuberculosis. Thomson’s gifts as a storyteller and writer make great use of this disquieting story to weave an exciting coming-of-age story as Haley learns to live with change, loss, and death. Twelve Months of Fresh Recipes
In playful rhymes, author Stephanie Calmenson brings the reader along with Jake and his dad, as they explore the mammals, birds, insects, and sea life on and around the island. With graceful illustrations by Jennifer Thermes, Jake (and the reader) start to see the moose, a little bit at a time, but Dad’s either got his nose in a book or binoculars glued to his eyes. In the end, it’s Jake who shows his dad the value of putting aside the guide book and ferry schedule to truly experience the beauty and magic of the outdoors.

But ever since his parents bought the lakeside campground, he’s had more chores and less time to explore. Cooper’s only bright spot this summer is his new friend, Packrat, a guy who carries the world in his coat pockets and leaves his troubles behind. But trouble has come to the Wilder Family Campground and Pine Lake, where a family of loons is building a nest. First, someone dams up the lake and floods the nest. Then, when Cooper and Packrat build a raft where the loons can make a new nest, it gets destroyed. Someone is out to harm the loons. The Contest
by James Hurley Benedict Salem has decided that he’s ready to make his life what he wants it to be, so he moves to Maine, drawn by a beautiful river and its trout. Together with his new friends, Ben founds the Samuel Tippett Fly Fishers club. When the group devises a fishing contest to determine the world’s best trout fly, they have no idea that the pursuit of perfection will soon overtake reason. “Competition can do that,” says Ben. During their quest, the ten participants fight over rules and cease caring about the feelings of their fellow members. This is a tale of how camaraderie among anglers can be tested while arguing the merits of one’s “piscatorial philosophy,” and ultimately, about finding a balance between chasing an ideal and reveling in life’s most important moments.
