Closer All the Time by Jim Nichols
The inhabitants of Baxter, Maine, are going nowhere fast—but not for lack of trying. In this artfully written jewel of a novel, award-winning author Jim Nichols strings together the bittersweet stories of people bound together by shared geography and the insular nature of small-town life. There’s Johnny Lunden, a well-meaning war veteran with a penchant for the local bar and a deep, but doomed, love for his family; eight-year-old Ted Soule, who shares a first kiss with the Ophelia-like Nadia, the daughter of his Russian neighbors; and Tomi Lambert who watches the confused adults around her struggle to accept their fates. With the coastal waters of Maine serving as a backdrop, Nichols explores the nature of connection—hoped for, missed, lost, and found. U.S. $22.95 / CAN $24.95 ISBN: 978-1-939017-49-9 Fiction, hardcover (DJ), 6 x 9, 176 p.

When murder visits the seemingly sleepy town of Androscoggin, Maine, it lands in the lap of veteran crime reporter Jack McMorrow, a recent transplant from the city. As McMorrow struggles to find his way in a small, rural town, an undercurrent of violence draws him into deep and dangerous waters.
Hoping for a fresh start, Jack McMorrow has a new home in the cheerful-sounding town of Prosperity, Maine. But when a freelance gig leads him to a teen mother and some high school hooligans, it’s not child’s play. A girl is murdered and Jack’s investigation places him squarely in the killer’s sights.

Like many crime novelists, Boyle began his writing career in newspapers—”the best training ground ever.” After Colby College, he knocked around, including doing stints as a roofer, a postman, and a manuscript reader at a New York publisher. His first reporting job was with a weekly in the paper mill town of Rumford, Maine. After a few months it was on to the (Waterville, Maine) Morning Sentinel, where editors learned early on that he worked best when left to his own devices. He wrote about stuff he saw in police stations, courtrooms, in the towns and cities of Maine. The first McMorrow title, Deadline, was originally published in 1993, but the series is being fully redesigned and reissued in both print and e-book editions.

Life is briefly as it should be for Jack McMorrow: He and his wife Roxanne have retreated from the stress and danger of their day jobs to raise their daughter Sophie. But when development and arson threaten the nearby town of Sanctuary, and a crazy accident brings back mistakes from Roxanne’s past, McMorrow’s nose for crime leads him into a darker and deeply twisted tale. Something explosive is smoldering in the picturesque town of Sanctuary, and the enemy is closer than he thinks. In Once Burned, the 10th installment of the internationally popular McMorrow series, Jack takes you along as he hunts a killer with a long memory and a short fuse. A broken heart, a tendency to drink too much, and a desire to try the straight and narrow leads Jack McMorrow into a domestic-abuse case and a personal crisis that will test what kind of man he really is.
Jack McMorrow finds that the quiet life in the Maine woods that he planned isn’t quite so tranquil when a growing local drug trade forces him to tangle with rural hippies, brutal drug dealers, and county fair cronies, all culminating in searing violence that strikes very close to home.

The Essential Danby By George Danby
George danby For more than forty years, the keen eye and razor sharp wit of editorial cartoonist George Danby has given every stripe of politician—and their trade—something to cringe about. From his earliest cartoons first published in the 1970’s by The Providence (RI) Journal, to the more than 25,000 cartoons he’s drawn for Time, Newsweek, The New York Times, USA Today, The Washington Post, and now The Bangor Daily News, Danby has used humor to catalog the daily upsand-downs of the biggest headlines and headline grabbers. With the decline of the daily newspaper and the shrinking of the Sunday cartoon sections, fewer and fewer artists remain to translate the world for us so simply—albeit with their tongue in their cheek—and even fewer can boast a catalog as robust and expansive as George Danby’s. Still drawing a cartoon a day for The Bangor Daily News, George Danby can be relied upon to give his signature perspective on current events as they unfold in real time.

In this, his first-ever career retrospective, Danby takes the reader through his own evolution, from a budding cartoonist in the 1970s through the hectic 1980s, to the stranger, bipolar world of American politics today and the challenges facing the printed newspaper. Tom Hennessey is one of Maine’s best-loved sporting artists and outdoor writers. He is the author of two previous books, Feathers ‘n Fins and Handy to Home, and his illustrations have appeared in numerous publications, including Field & Stream, Bangor Daily News, and Harris Publications of New York Sporting Magazines. His paintings have been shown at Crossroads of Sport in New York, and are included in many of the finest private and corporate collections of sporting art. Hennessey grew up beside the Penobscot River with game-abundant fields and woodlands at his back door. His lifelong love of hunting and fishing would launch his career, and as his reputation grew, he was invited to hunting and fishing grounds throughout the United States and beyond. When not painting, he usually can be found in a canoe or a duck blind or behind a bird dog, where in addition to fish and game he gathers inspiration for paintings. He lives in Maine with his wife.

Besides being able to do this, his very words also have the ability to paint a highly visual picture in your mind of the experience he chooses to share.” —Bud Simpson, The Logan Daily News

In Pennsylvania, it was a clothing boutique for pets. Then a breakfast buffet in North Carolina. Then an apple orchard in Connecticut. Now, Azalea’s dad says he’s going to drive a tour bus in Maine. Through all those moves, Azalea and her older sister were homeschooled by their mom. But when they move to Portland, Azalea’s mom asks them to try unschooling—a method of learning that gives children more freedom to direct their own education. As the sisters struggle to find a delicate new balance, their world is rocked when someone sabotages Dad’s tour bus. Azalea decides it is up to her to find the culprit and hold her family together. In her fresh and funny debut middle-reader novel, Liza Kleinman deftly explores the new unschooling movement as well as the challenges of moving to a new home, making friends, and finding room for differences within a family.

“Quirky characters and realistic dialogue will make this suspenseful eco-mystery a favorite summer read of any wildlife-lover.” – ForeWord Reviews
Author Tamra Wight is following the advice of Mark Twain, who is credited with saying, “Write what you know.” In Wight’s middle-grade chapter books, the Cooper and Packrat Adventures, the setting is a campground on a lake. Wight and her family own and run a campground on a lake, where loons and eagles nest, and deer slip in and out of trees. Wight says the campground is a source of countless stories, with people from all over the country visiting every summer, she says, and young campers constantly sharing things they have found or seen in and around the camp. Like Cooper, she borrows the campground kayaks to get out on the lake whenever she can. “In the winter,” she says, “I snowshoe the trail and the edges of the lake. No matter the season, I always have my camera in hand because I never know what kind of wildlife I’ll see.”

Lies in the Dust
Witches, Vampires & more
Written by Jakob Crane Illustrated by Timothy Decker In Salem’s dark days of 1692 and 1693, young girls pointed fingers and accused others of witchcraft, sentencing them to torture, or even death. When the cloud lifted, and the accusations were shown to be false, the girls faced little, if any, penalty. Were they sorry? No one knows. But one girl, Ann Putnam Jr., did feel moved to show remorse. Fourteen years after the trials, Ann wrote a letter of apology. This is her story. This searing graphic novel is a wholly unique portrayal of an untold aspect of the Salem Witch Trials. Through the author’s extensive primary research and the artist’s creative re-imagining, the reader is taken inside the head of Ann Putnam, the only girl to apologize for sending 24 people to their death. From the northernmost outpost of Whitlock Mills Light to Grindle Point Light on Islesboro, to the southern beacon of Cape Neddick (Nubble) Light—a total of sixty-four existing lighthouses dot the bold coast and rugged islands of Maine. The Islandport Guide to Lighthouses in Maine celebrates the longstanding history and importance of each lighthouse, as well as its modern-day use and accessibility. A special section for mariners details the sea approach to 22 lighthouses. Four-color photography, combined with vintage postcard imagery, make this guidebook as handsome as it is useful. fiction
When eccentric billionaire Ferdinand Sevigny’s latest stunt, to sail around the world blindfolded, goes awry, he lands in Maine. Despite mounting evidence and an investigation by local police, Sevigny refuses to admit foul play was involved. As more people become entangled in the mystery, they will be forced to make decisions that will define them forever.
Meet Benedict Salem, BS to his friends, a frustrated writer and teacher looking to find himself. Middle-aged and blocked creatively, his dreams are consumed by those magical moments when the weather, the lay of the cast, the fly, and the water converge with the fish in one fluid arc of perfection. His desire for such moments takes him to a small town in Maine complete with a small inn near wilderness, a clean-running river, and a bounty of large, smart, and mostly fearless trout. Soon BS and some fellow anglers start the Samuel Tippett Fly Fishers club and devise a fishing contest to determine the best trout fly. However, what starts out as a friendly game quickly descends into a bitter rivalry— feelings and friendships are forgotten as a fight over rules and the hunger to win takes hold of the men. In a deftly interwoven tale that explores the camaraderie and sportsmanship among anglers, The Contest challenges the wisdom of chasing perfection, and instead, encourages the reader to revel in life’s most important moments, however brief or passing.

Backtrack
By V. Paul Reynolds In Backtrack, former naval officer, avid outdoorsman, sportsman, editor, and award-winning journalist V. Paul Reynolds journeys back along the path of his life to revisit and share with readers many of his outdoor experiences. Reynolds was introduced to the outdoors by his father, Harvard Reynolds, in the 1940s. Harvard took his son to many of his own favorite hunting and fishing spots, helping give birth to his son’s lifelong love affair with the outdoors. Harvard eventually took his son to his first smoke-filled hunting camp, where amber liquid flowed and profanity filled the room. Reynolds soon understood how the outdoors could bestow both the love of nature and the joy of friendship.

There’s a lake. A loon. Two chicks. Sounds peaceful, right? Guess again! The Lake Where Loon Lives starts quietly, but the cumulative story builds, one line at a time, to a wacky and wonderful and splashy crescendo, as the loons are joined by a playful fly, a slippery fish, and a curious boy on the dock. Brenda Reeves Sturgis treats us to fanciful and evocative word play while Brooke Carlton’s exuberant watercolors tell the story behind the story. Mama Loon rolls her eyes and tolerates the antics that take place on the lake until, at the end, she snuggles with her chicks who are ready for sleep, just as the readers of this wonderful picture book will be!

Dean Bennett uses his formidable knowledge to add personal depth and poignancy to a multigenerational tale that explores the erosion of public land use, the degradation of the environment, and the changing mores of rural culture in the Northeast.
Ghost Buck
By Dean Bennett Using his family’s hunting journal, photographs and letters dating back to the 1800s, and a detailed camp register from 1936 to the present, Dean Bennett tells of the changes that have affected hunting and the landscape in western Maine. Combining his skills as an illustrator and storyteller, Bennett weaves memoir, natural history, politics, and emotion into a volume chock-full of information about hunting in a changing world. This is not a book about how to hunt, but rather a paean to the traditions of a family and a rural and naturecentric lifestyle that will ring true to hunters and non-hunters alike. u.s. $16.95 ISBN: 978-1-939017-66-6 Nonfiction, softcover, 5.5 x 8.5 available september 22

Bestselling author Kate Christensen explores autobiography and food in a new culinary memoir about cooking at the end of the world, both geographically and metaphorically.
How to Cook a Moose
By Elizabeth Atkinson
By Kate Christensen
Ruby LaRue is an eleven-year-old girl with a zest for life. She and her shy, brilliant friend, Eleanor Bandaranaike, live in a quaint town at the base of Sugar Mountain, an exclusive ski resort in the White Mountains. Every winter, the town comes alive with “Outers,” wealthy families who own ski condos and wear designer clothes, luxuries that Ruby and Eleanor cannot afford. One December, Ruby and Eleanor meet Madame Magnifique, the “World’s Most Divine Psychic,” who urges them to unlock their deepest dreams. As a chain of events unfolds over the winter months, both girls find themselves on a journey of self-discovery that starts with unlikely friendships, secret crushes, and newfound skills, and snowplows to an unexpected outcome.
Kate Christensen tells the story of the hardship and happiness that has sustained her adopted home through thick and thin, as demonstrated through the staple foods of the region. Using her candid blend of humor, insight, culinary knowledge, and taste for rugged adventure, Christensen takes the reader on a journey into the lives and landscapes of the farmers, fishermen, hunters, and families that are trying to make do with what they have and still produce delicious, healthful food. She also details the history of food in the region and the secrets to cultivating her own sources of joy. A mouthwatering stew that combines the magic ingredients of love, personal appetites, hard labor, history, and original recipes based on foods featured in the book.
