There’s a lake. A loon. Two chicks. Sounds peaceful, right? Guess again! The Lake Where Loon Lives starts quietly, but the cumulative story builds, one line at a time, to a wacky and wonderful and splashy crescendo, as the loons are joined by a playful fly, a slippery fish, and a curious boy on the dock. Brenda Reeves Sturgis treats us to fanciful and evocative word play while Brooke Carlton’s exuberant watercolors tell the story behind the story. Mama Loon rolls her eyes and tolerates the antics that take place on the lake until, at the end, she snuggles with her chicks who are ready for sleep, just as the readers of this wonderful picture book will be! Nic listened to the swish of the long grass against her legs as she and Nellie trudged through it. She saw grasshoppers leap and heard the distant clanging of a bell buoy. She breathed deep the wonderful smell of spruce trees.”

Nic and Nellie is a gorgeously illustrated, heartwarming story of a girl and her beloved dog, Nellie, who slowly learn that new places really aren’t so scary, and that often friends can be found around every corner, even in old rowboats, tidal ponds, and stinky mudflats. Rescued by Seaborne, a machete-toting wayfarer of few words, the children suddenly find themselves at the center of a centuriesold battle between Dankar, the ruler of Exor, and three siblings that rule the other realms of Ayda. At stake are the four stones of power and the elusive Fifth Stone that could save them all. When 9-year-old Frankie is kidnapped by Dankar, her older sister Evelyn and the three Thompson brothers must learn to harness the powers of the daylights, ancient forces of earth, fire, water, and air, in order to navigate their way through the realms of Ayda, rescue her, and find a way home.

Abbott’s Reach
Meet Benedict Salem, BS to his friends, a frustrated writer and teacher looking to find himself. Middle-aged and blocked creatively, his dreams are consumed by those magical moments when the weather, the lay of the cast, the fly, and the water converge with the fish in one fluid arc of perfection. His desire for such moments takes him to a small town in Maine complete with a small inn near wilderness, a clean-running river, and a bounty of large, smart, and mostly fearless trout. Soon BS and some fellow anglers start the Samuel Tippett Fly Fishers club and devise a fishing contest to determine the best trout fly. However, what starts out as a friendly game quickly descends into a bitter rivalry—feelings and friendships are forgotten as a fight over rules and the hunger to win takes hold of the men. In a deftly interwoven tale that explores the camaraderie and sportsmanship among anglers, The Contest challenges the wisdom of chasing perfection, and instead, encourages the reader to revel in life’s most important moments, however brief or passing.

Author Brian Daniels has created a wonderful new literary character in Joe Wright—a middle-aged, thick-around-themiddle everyman hopelessly stuck in the twentieth century. Thoughts of an Average Joe is the hilarious rambling of a man whose commentaries voice the confusion and angst of a simple, aging dude trying to make sense of the modern world. Joe offers his thoughts about the many issues that confuse or annoy him: “I’m Not Ready for the Wireless World,” “Poachers Are Not Hunters,” and “I’m Comfortable in My Old Skin,” are just a few examples. He struggles to understand women in several essays, including “I’m Afraid of the Little Woman” and “I’ve Noticed That Women Are Not Like Men.” Not only will you meet Joe, but also his fascinating friends and family members. You’ll get to know the places he frequents regularly, too, including Dan’s Market, Small-Mart, Blake’s Esso Station, and the Smalltown News. He hopes his stories will bring a smile to your face and warm your heart. U.S. $16.95 / $18.95 ISBN: 978-1-939017-26-0 Humor, fiction, softcover, 5.5 x 8.5, 208 p.

Smith offers a nostalgic look at her childhood on the Maine coast and her observations of life under the big sky and among the rolling potato fields of her beloved Aroostook County, where she has lived for nearly seven decades.
Nine Mile Bridge is one of the best books ever written about the Allagash and St. John River regions and details a way of life in the northern forests that otherwise would fade from memory. Trappers, foresters, lumbermen, woods folk, and wild animals, as well as frozen dogsled runs, hunting, fishing, simple joys, and awe-inspiring beauty, form the backdrop for Hamlin’s remarkable adventure.

It’s okay that I can’t keep up with younger people in this technological and fast-changing
world. I’ve learned to laugh at my shortcomings. Laughter—that amazing human condition where we fall apart, make strange noises, sometimes shed tears, gasp for breath, and for a moment, forget our aches and pains and the oil bill. I now love every day so much that when it’s my time to go, I hope I go with no regrets.

My Life in the Maine Woods
The Cows are Out!
Jackson recounts her North Woods experiences with her renowned game warden husband, Dave, during the 1930s. She writes simply and compellingly of hunting, fishing, campfire cooking, and the sounds of the wilderness through the seasons. She also visits the trappers, fishermen, and woodsmen with whom she shared the legendary wilderness.
Price writes of the daily trials of haying, cow breeding, and milking against a backdrop of gentle and entertaining rural life. She introduces eccentric neighbors, visiting city folk, and loveable pets. The Cows are Out! is a tribute to family farmers and to an important part of New England’s heritage.

John Ford Sr.
“
As I walked through the maze of poles
where the majority of the traps were located, I suddenly found myself plunging down through the ice and into the icy cold water below. I was completely surrounded by the heavy spring-loaded traps attached to the set poles. Everything happened so quickly. I instinctively extended my arms, catching myself on what little thin ice remained around me, still clutching the chisel in one hand. I was hanging midway up to my chest in the freezing water as I heard the ice cracking under the strain of my weight. With snowshoes firmly attached to my feet, it would have been impossible to swim if I had to. I didn’t dare to kick or thrash around, fearing one of the large traps placed precariously close by might latch onto my snowshoes, or even worse, onto my foot.
”
Suddenly, the Cider Didn’t Taste So Good
This Cider Still Tastes Funny!
Retired Maine Game Warden John Ford has seen it all. He’s been shot at by desperate prison escapees, been outwitted by wily trappers, and rescued scores of animals. As a tenacious and successful warden, he was always willing to spend the time needed to nab violators of the state’s fish and game laws. At the same time, though, he wasn’t a cold, heartless, go-by-the-book enforcer; he usually had a good quip ready when he slipped the handcuffs on a violator, and he wasn’t above accepting a lesson learned as sufficient penalty for breaking the law. Ford is also a very gifted storyteller and he writes of his adventures in Suddenly, the Cider Didn’t Taste So Good, a collection of true tales, both humorous and serious, from the trenches of law enforcement, and also includes heartwarming accounts of his rescue of hurt or abandoned animals.
Not only was John Ford’s first book, Suddenly, the Cider Didn’t Taste So Good a smash hit, so was John! He spent much of 2013 entertaining and delighting audiences across Maine with a mix of serious, hilarious, and often self-deprecating tales of his adventures as both a Maine Game Warden and a Sheriff. As one reviewer wrote after seeing John in person, “Even if you only find his book is half as good as his stand-up comedy routine—as funny as anything you’re likely to see—you’ll find it worth the read.” Trust us, it is worth the read. And now he is back with more wonderful, and more importantly, genuine, stories.

Backtrack
By V. Paul Reynolds In Backtrack, former naval officer, avid outdoorsman, sportsman, editor, and award-winning journalist V. Paul Reynolds journeys back along the path of his life to revisit and share with readers many of his outdoor experiences. Reynolds was introduced to the outdoors by his father, Harvard Reynolds, in the 1940s. Harvard took his son to many of his own favorite hunting and fishing spots, helping give birth to his son’s lifelong love affair with the outdoors. Later, Harvard eventually took his son to his first smoke-filled hunting camp, where amber liquid flowed and profanity filled the room. Reynolds soon understood how the outdoors could bestow both the love of nature and the joy of friendship. U.S. $16.95 / CAN $18.95 ISBN: 978-1-934031-64-3 Nonfiction, softcover, 5.5 x 8.5, 254 p.

There are many bright-colored birds that fly about in the woods too. They build nests in the trees. Robins lay bright blue-green eggs in their nests. The mother bird sits on the eggs. She sits very still and it is hard to see her there among the leaves and branches.

Titus Tidewater
Mabel Takes the Ferry
For blue lobster Titus Tidewater, summer means exciting happenings near the shoreline, but also lurking dangers. Titus explores the ocean floor, but soon finds himself caught in a trap. He is taken away from his familiar surroundings and to a strange new world on land, before he is ultimately rescued by two children and the ocean itself.
Canine sailor Mabel, a summer resident of Islesboro, Maine, takes an unauthorized ferry trip aboard the Margaret Chase Smith to Lincolnville Beach. Mabel visits a restaurant, makes a few friends, and tastes some lobster before finally returning home.

Since 199 9
15
Islandport Press
was founded in 1999 with a promise, a book, and a dream. Fifteen years later, years our small publishing company is pushing past the 100 title mark and has expanded its reach throughout New England all while adhering to core principles: tell authentic stories in books that feature superior editing, design, and construction, and stay true to our roots by staying in touch with readers and resellers. That first book was Hauling by Hand: The Life and Times of a Maine Island written by company founder Dean L. Lunt. Lunt, a newspaper reporter, who began the book as a promise to his grandmother. In the 1970s, she wrote a short history of Frenchboro—the island village where they were both raised—and asked her grandson to update it. (The company’s now-iconic logo is based on the island house, which really was on a dock, where she was born.) After a couple of years of research and writing the book, Lunt began developing the idea to start a book publishing company. While driving to a newspaper assignment one day, he pulled over by a lake north of Newport, Maine, sat outside in the sunshine and wrote out the mission statement and sketched out the plan that soon became Islandport Press. Hauling by Hand was published in the
spring of 2000 and that summer Lunt quit his full-time job as a reporter to drive up and down the coast trying to convince bookstores to stock his 496-page, $35 hardcover history of an island with barely 50 residents. Somehow, it worked. During the early years, it was just Lunt and his wife, Michelle. The couple worked out of their basement and established their garage as a warehouse. During cold winter afternoons, Lunt would set a small heater on the folding packing table to keep the tape warm enough so that it would stick to cardboard shipping boxes. And that’s how it started. Now it’s 2014 and Islandport will spend the year celebrating its 15th Anniversary. It has been a great ride. The company now employs eight people. Despite growth, the company has never wavered from its original plan and has adopted another core value: hire extremely talented people. We have done that. There is lots of chatter about the future of publishing, but we don’t believe the story of printed books is drawing to a close. Far from it, we think it is a wondrous ongoing story with exciting chapters to come. We are continuously inspired by the talented authors and illustrators we get to work with and by the many people who just love books. We really can’t wait to discover what the next 15 years has in store. It will continue to be a great adventure. We hope you’ll join us. Onward!
