Welcome Tawna & Natasha! Two new faces arrived with the new year: Tawna Soltysik and Natasha Arruda. Natasha isn’t really new, as she is a 2006 I.S. graduate. She is completing her student teaching requirement for Chaminade University in Connie’s 2nd grade class. Tawna is our new teacher’s aide in grades 2, 3 & 5. Tawna and her family recently returned to Kaua‘i from France, where she lived for several years. Prior to living in France, Tawna was a UH Regent Scholar and then worked as a singer/dancer at Disneyworld.
Solar Power Coming to Island School
Before the Winter Break, members of Island School’s Buildings and Grounds Committee, assisted by Mike Goto, entered into serious negotiations with several companies pursuant to obtaining solar power for Island

Under terms finally agreed upon, Voyager Solar Corporation was selected to construct and own the operation; Island School will purchase electricity from this corporation, and, if excess power is produced, sell the excess to KIUC. The location of the panels is to be at the eastern corner of the campus. The result should be to substantially reduce our electrical costs. Kurt Bosshard, whose daughter Lindsay graduated from Island School in 2010, is owner of the corporation. Construction is expected to begin in early March with completion estimated by the opening of the next school year. Many thanks to Mike and our board’s Building & Grounds Committee for getting this underway.
Accreditation Team to Visit Next Month
Teachers, administrators and staff are preparing for a visit from the HAIS/WASC visitation committee on Feb 12-15. A 124 page self-study was completed and sent to the team in December, which describes every facet of Island School in detail. The purpose of committee’s visit is to observe the school in action, meet with teachers, staff, board members, parents and students, in order to make a report. This is the 4th time Island School has applied for accreditation. We have always received the highest term of accreditation, which is six years. Accreditation serves as an outside examination and validates our program to the greater educational community. Results of the team’s visit should be announced in May.

Let’s All Pitch In “Paris is always a good idea.”
-Audrey Hepburn
If you’ve never volunteered for the auction before, here are some reasons to join the team this year:
It’s Paris!
Alan King in his stylish beret mans the Auction sign-up table while Robb Troost snatches a choux à la crème
• You’ll meet other parents and members of our community - people with backgrounds and talents that are as diverse and interesting as those of our students. • Your efforts will support Island School’s students, educational programs, and mission. • You’ll have fun!
It’s Flexible!
You can spend as little or as much time volunteering as you would like: • Ten minutes a day making 3 phone calls to follow up with donations; • Half an hour uploading photos to our database from your home computer; • An hour or two in the ballroom recreating a Parisian storefront; • Two hours in the thick of the Live Auction as a bell ringer!
There truly is something for everyone. There are even positions that are needed in the week following the event - for those who would like to reserve the evening, and the weeks leading up to it for other things (like checking out the vast array of items that will be up for bid)! You may have noticed Auction Co-Chairs Alan King and Lulu Schilleci out in front of the school Tuesday morning - with fresh coffee and cream puffs, violin melodies provided by junior Kim McDonough, and information on how to become a volunteer. The team will be back with more this coming Wednesday morning, January 18, so be sure to stop by. Or sign up in the Office; sheets are on the front counter.
An Evening in Paris
For a complete list of positions available, or for more information, feel free to catch Alan or Lulu around campus for a quick chat, call Lulu at 246-0233 x280, or email auction@ ischool.org.
