Midterm Progress Reports Next Week

Students in middle and high school have been taking midterm exams in some of their classes this week. Teachers will be calculating midterm grades, which will be emailed to parents and students on the afternoon of January 31. Students receiving grades lower than a “C” and/or unsatisfactory (“U”) citizenship grades will also have comments added to these reports. Anyone needing a hard copy of their midterm report may email Katie at katie.magoun@ischool.org.

Accepting Fencing Materials for Wiffle Ball Field

Our wonderful security/maintenance man, Rodney Ochoa, is asking our ‘ohana to check around for leftover wooden fencing ­— 3’ (minimum) lengths of 1X — to donate to the cause. For the backstop, he needs 2X12 or 2X10, 6’ or longer. Please drop off donations in the front

parking lot near Rodney’s house, next to the mowers. If you have any questions about exactly what we need, please call Rodney at 634-3309. Mahalo!

Swim Team Looking for Volunteers

The Voyager Athletic Department is looking for volunteers to time at our Championship Swim Meet. The meet will be held on Saturday, Feb. 1 at the YMCA swimming pool. Timers are needed to report to Jen at 9:30 a.m.; the meet starts at 10 a.m. and should run approximately 2 1/2 hours long. No experience needed! If you are able to assist as a timer please email Jen at jenp@ischool.org.

Summer Program at Yale University Available to Sophomores and Juniors

The Yale Young Global Scholars Program (YYGS) is an academic and leadership-development program for talented high school students. YYGS is administered and hosted by Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, and offers two-week residential sessions June 16 - 29 (Science, Policy and Innovation), July 7 - 20 (Politics, Law and Economics) and July 26 - August 8 (Studies in Grand Strategy), drawing students together from all over the world. FOURTH GRADE – Gwich’in Leader Adeline Peters Raboff from Arctic Village, Alaska visited the fourth graders on Jan. 16 courtesy of Kumu Kauka. She answered many questions about how they survive the -55° degree cold, what they eat and how they get around. She even answered a question about how she got the tattoo on her chin. It means she can provide for her family.

SCIENCE OLYMPIAD — Island School is sending both a Middle and a High School Science Olympiad team to the Hawai‘i State Tournament on O‘ahu after winning the District Regional Science Olympiad this past Monday at KCC. Re-Enroll for 2014-2015 Now! We’re midway through the year — time to look ahead

Enrollment for current families begins Monday, January 27, and runs through Friday, February 7. Why so early? Well — ­ it’s not really so early. Scheduling and hiring for next year are already underway. We need to have enrollment numbers to do a good job with this. Benefits of early reenrollment •Space for your children is ensured. •A $100 rebate is yours at the end of the 2014-2015 school year, providing your student has maintained a satisfactory record and your account has been kept up-to-date. Island School is the right choice Island School enjoys a high reputation for academic excellence and provides a full range of activities for students. Singapore Math grounds students in their understanding of the meaning of numbers and is being expanded. Science labs for high school students have increased instruction in this area by a third. Robotics is available at all three divisions. Annually, major drama and musical productions receive acclaim from the public. Students participate in Mock Trial, the Interact Club, Science Olympiad, SCUBA and athletics. 2014-1015 tuition fees Tuition charges for the coming year are as follows: $9,140 • Pre-Kindergarten $13,340 • Kindergarten through 8th Grade $13,700 • 9th through 12th Grade We know that these are not small amounts. At the same time, with the exception of parochial schools and Kamehameha, they are well below those of other top-quality independent schools in Hawai‘i.

For the coming year we are offering a 12-payment plan in addition to the 2- and 10-month payment plans. For those choosing to pay over 12 months, each monthly payment will be smaller than the 10-month plan. Financial aid Those wishing to apply for financial aid should do so using FACTS online ­­— http://www.factstuitionaid. com. There is a $25 fee for this service. Notification of financial aid awards will be made in April. The Business Office will adjust accounts in accord with these awards. Contract and deposit Reenrollment may be done either electronically (via email) or through hard copy. The 2014-2015 contract will be emailed to families currently enrolled via RenWeb. Families who want to respond electronically may do so by downloading the contract using Adobe Acrobat or Foxit Reader. It should be read carefully, completed and then printed immediately (Adobe will not let you save the document). Then agreement with its contents, including payment plan, should be noted and the signed document returned to Island School, c/o the Admissions Office. Please note: To be processed, all contracts must be accompanied by a nonrefundable deposit of $300, payable by cash, check, or credit card. This amount will be deducted from your total tuition charges. We’re already looking forward to the next school year, filled with exciting educational experiences for your children.
