Class of 2012 Sends a Big Mahalo
The Class of 2012 would like to thank those who supported their Lucky Drawing Fundraiser! The students raised $2,720 which will go towards their post graduation dinner and their senior gift to Island School. The grand prize winner of a one week stay in a timeshare condo went to John Culliney – Congratulations! A special mahalo shout out to Stuart Munroe and his son Sawyer (pre-K) who made a generous donation on behalf of the PK class, entering a ticket for each of the 27 seniors. It was their way of honoring the seniors as they are graduating on behalf of the PK students who are just beginning their school careers.

Pre-K Accreditation Kudos to Miss Sue for her dedication to a top quality program! The Na Pua Keiki pre-K program was visited by the NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) accreditation team yesterday. The team consisted of one person who spent the day observing and taking notes in Sue Macklin’s class. Sue has worked very hard for the past year to prepare for this visit, which went very smoothly. The visitor remarked how well supported our PK program was by the entire school. “I’m having so much fun, I don’t want to leave,” he said. NAEYC accreditation is done every five years and is in addition to our WASC/HAIS accreditation; the criteria is based on developmentally appropriate practices for young children. Island School is going through the WASC/HAIS accreditation process this year as well, with the visiting team scheduled to be on campus Feb. 12-15. We will receive a score from the NAEYC when they have completed their report. Last week, Sue attended the Castle Colleagues program at Chaminade University in Honolulu. Her participation was a result of her applying for and receiving a full scholarship. For more than a century, the Samuel N. & Mary Castle Foundation has been involved in providing a stronger developmental start for the children of Hawai‘i. Trustee Executive Director Al Castle recognized that by giving knowledge, assistance and peer support to those in the early childhood field, the children themselves would benefit. Participants in this program meet in a series of three intensive retreats (usually 3-4 days) from Wednesday – Saturday. Session leaders include a wide variety of crosssector resource people from Hawai‘i colleges, as well

as foundation trustees, accountants, applied computer and communication experts in the early childhood field. The goal is to provide Early Childhood Center directors/ leaders with skill development to be more influential in the field and to benefit the children in Early Childhood Developmental Centers. The curriculum is highly practical; it’s based on actual hands-on management situations and organized to give each group a network of peers and resource people they can contact, long after the official course ends. Sue completed the first session of the program last week. “The study groups game me a great opportunity to discuss important issues with other Early Childhood Educators,” said Sue. Topics covered included observation and assessment, effective communication with students and their families and the history of early childhood education in Hawai‘i. The next meetings are scheduled in February, with the last in March.
