Island School’s 37th Birthday Celebration Tomorrow
Families are invited to the birthday assembly which begins at 8:10 a.m. in the Wilcox Gymnasium. Students will begin their ho‘okupu projects (see page 4) immediately following the assembly.
Accepting Fencing Materials for Wiffle Ball Field
Our wonderful security/maintenance man, Rodney Ochoa, is asking our ‘ohana to check around for leftover wooden fencing — 3’ (minimum) lengths of 1X — to donate to the cause. For the backstop, he needs 2X12 or 2X10, 6’ or longer. Please drop off donations in the front parking lot near Rodney’s house, next to the mowers. Swim Team Looking for Volunteers on Saturday
The Voyager Athletic Department is looking for volunteers to time at the KIF Championship Swim Meet. The meet will be held on Saturday, Feb. 1 at the YMCA swimming pool. Timers are needed to report to Jen at 9:30 a.m. The meet starts at 10 a.m. and should run approximately 2 1/2 hours long. No experience needed! If you are able to assist as a timer please email Jen at jenp@ischool.org. The athletic department will feed you.

Hiki Nō is a PBS Hawai‘i student news network that features student-produced news segments. Chan Hsu ‘14 and Sam Goldberg ‘16 from Mr. Evslin’s Video Production class created a segment profiling Mary Castelanelli’s balancing act with teaching at Island School and training for the 2013 Kona Ironman Triathalon. The show will air next Thursday at 7:30 p.m. on PBS. Hopefully, you can all tune in. If not, we will publish the link to the site once it is online.
Summer Program at Yale University Available to Sophomores and Juniors
The Yale Young Global Scholars Program (YYGS) is an academic and leadership-development program for talented high school students. YYGS is administered and hosted by Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, and offers two-week residential sessions June 16 - 29 (Science, Policy and Innovation), July 7 - 20 (Politics, Law and Economics) and July 26 August 8 (Studies in Grand Strategy), drawing students together from all over the world. LEGISLATIVE INTERNSHIP – Autumn Warnock ‘15 has been selected to participate in a state-wide legislative internship program at the State Capitol. She will be working with Senator Ron Kouchi, Representatives Derek Kawakami, James Tokioka and Dee Morikawa during her internship. The internship runs from January to May and involves tracking bills, working with legislative staff and visiting the Capitol to shadow Representatives and Senators during their daily activities. On Wednesday, Autumn attended an orientation at the Capitol on O’ahu. HAWAIIAN STUDIES, HULA & SECOND GRADE – Hula dancers Shawna Dinnan ‘14, Moeko Fukada ‘15, Kalena Wong ‘14, Christy Williams ‘14; conch shell blowers Ben Griep ‘19 and Kaikea Ahuna ‘19 and Connie Kakalia’s 2nd Grade class joined Kumu Kauka to bless Hokulei Village on Wednesday Jan. 29.

CHEMISTRY — In Ms. Haverkort’s Chemistry class, students tested physical and chemical properties of several elements to determine if they’re metals, nonmetals or metalloids. Physical properties investigated were color, luster, shape, and malleability. The chemical properties that were investigated were reactivity with both copper chloride solution and hydrochloric acid solution. The elements that were investigated were aluminum, carbon, copper, iodine, magnesium, silicon, sulfur, and zinc. Students learned that metals are generally shiny, malleable, and reactive with acidic solutions, whereas nonmetals have opposing characteristics. Metalloids have characteristics of both metals and nonmetals.

Austin Cook ‘14 cut big trees encroaching along the outside of the campus fenceline on Saturday. Some trees will be used for his Eagle Scout Service Project on campus. Members of his Boy Scout troop, his dad Tony and teachers Erin Cobb-Adams and David Reynolds helped out.

MIDDLE SCHOOL – Emily Sullivan ‘18 and Sasha Rovinsky ‘19 did an outstanding job representing Island School at the Kaua‘i District Spelling Bee on Jan. 16 at Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School. Families, teachers and friends gathered to support Sasha and Emily as they competed against 18 of Kaua‘i’s top spellers. Emily and Sasha held their own and made it to the fifth and eighth rounds respectively. They spelled words like “leonine” and “complacency” with

Birthday — It’s better to give! In honor of Island School’s 37th birthday, our students give back to a community that has been so generous. After tomorrow’s birthday assembly, our students will spend the day on ho‘okupu projects benefiting their school and their community. Here’s what is planned: Elementary Pre-Kindergarten - Students will work on donation items for the Disco Ball Annual Gala Auction. Kindergarten and 3rd Grade - Buddies will visit with the residents at Regency at Pua Kea, then do a cleanup at Puhi Park.
benches, folding laundry and other tasks. 7th - The class will remove vegetation, clean up and plant near the Kaiola Canoe Hale on the Hule‘ia River alongside Mason Chock and the Malama Hule‘ia restoration project. 8th - Students will assist Malama Na ‘Apapa with a beach clean-up at Nukoli‘i Beach on the East Side.
1st - Students will clean the picnic tables around campus and will buddy with 2nd graders to work with Mike Goto in the school’s community garden.
High 9th - Freshmen will be transported to the Lawai International Center and work with its president, Lynn Muramoto. They will clear the trail to the temples of weeds, brush and tree branches. Students will also plant orchids on the hillside.
2nd - Not only will they team up with 1st graders to work on the community garden, but they will also buddy with 4th grade to work at the worm farm on campus.
10th - Sophomores will work on Makanalani Farm with owners Eric and Lyn Taylor to clear land for gardening, plant indigenous plants and do repairs and maintenance to the fence line on the property.
4th - Students will be working with Mike Goto and the 2nd graders at the school’s worm farm.
11th - Juniors will travel to Hanchett Ranch in Moloa‘a where they will be mending fence lines and working on beautification of the arena.
5th - Students will revitalize the Keiki Garden. Middle 6th - Students will volunteer their services at the Kaua‘i Humane Society with Faye Newfield of the Humane Education Department. They are making toys for dogs and cats, painting picnic tables and
12th - Seniors will spend the day at Maha‘ulepu, where they will work with Dr. David Burney of the National Tropical Botanical Garden and Makauwahi Cave Reserve to weed, remove rocks and plant native trees and shrubs.
