H o l b r o o k “H o b e y ” G o o d a l e Me ke aloha pumehana. Island School joins the Goodale ‘ohana in mourning the recent death of Holbrook “Hobey” Goodale. Hobey passed away Monday night, peacefully at his home. He was 90 years old. Now he joins his beloved wife, Nancy, whom he has missed. She passed away on November 3rd, 2008. Hobey was a long-time and true friend of Island School. He served on our Board of Directors from 1987 to 2009, and over the years participated in many activities and provided endless support to Island School. He was a generous contributor, several times each year sending donations to assist the school with capital campaigns and tuition aid. Hobey participated fully in Island School life. He was a familiar sight on campus, attending countless board meetings, weeding the gardens on family work days, participating in Grandparents’ Day events and at other school gatherings.
An avid surfer and fisherman, Hobey grew up on Kalapaki Bay in the 1920s and ‘30s. His great grandfather, William Hyde Rice, bought the makai section of Kalapaki from Princess Ruth and Hobey lived there from age five. He truly was a person of this island and wrote a book titled “Hobey” of his many adventures and of the changes he witnessed over the years. In addition to Island School, Hobey was active in the National Tropical Botanical Gardens, with the Kaua‘i Museum and with St. Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church. His legacy is broad, and his influence has been widely felt. We send deepest condolences to Hobey’s children: Kathy Richardson (our current Board President), Rick & Karen Goodale, David Goodale and Joan Evans, and their families.
