N. Shore Morning Bus Commuters: Please Come Early We are asking North Shore parents to bring their children to the Hanalei, Princeville and Kilauea bus stops ahead of the scheduled bus arrival times. Along with regular traffic congestion, even a small delay at the stops can result in late arrival to school. Mahalo for understanding.

Family Work Day Rescheduled to March 22

Recruiting Kamehameha Scholars: Apply by March 31

Current 8th-11th grade Native Hawaiian students may apply for the Kamehameha Scholars program. It focuses on college and career guidance and also offers an opportunity to earn a Merit Scholarship. I.S. Chronicles STATE SCIENCE OLYMPIAD – The middle school team placed 4th overall out of 15 schools during Saturday’s Science Olympiad State Tournament at Leeward Community College, O‘ahu. They were also given the Spirit Award, which, along with $1000, is given to the team who displayed respect, school pride, sportsmanship and personification of the spirit of the competition. The middle school medaled in three events: China Huffman ’18, and Emily Sullivan ’18, placed 3rd in heredity and disease detectives; China Huffman ’18, and Luke Sullivan’20, placed 3rd in road scholar. The high school team placed 11th out of 15 schools, breaking the top ten in 11 out of 22 events. Congratulations teams!

CHEMISTRY – Mr. Dean visited Ms. Haverkort’s chemistry class on Monday, and the students learned about the chemistry of photography.

KINDERGARTEN – Author and Island School parent Carol A. Peacock-Williams visited the Kindergarten class last Friday for Read Across Kaua‘i Day, a day created by the Kaua‘i Children’s Authors Guild. Along with reading books in front of the class, she donated autographed copies of her own children’s book, “Adoption of Terry the Terrible Terrier,” to each kindergartner.

SENIOR PROJECT – Two due dates have been extended. First, the Senior Project Paper is now due by Friday, March 28. Seniors must submit their papers by email on or before that date to Mr. Bray (jim.bray@ischool.org) and to their advisers. Second, the Preview of Senior Project Presentations has been moved one week to April 14-18. TRACK & FIELD – This year’s track and field team, the largest in school history with 21 members, placed an unprecedented 2nd for girls and 3rd for boys during Thursday’s opening KIF meet at Vidinha Stadium. Chan Hsu ’14, won the 1500 meter run and made a state consideration time and personal best in the 800 meter run. Allison Culliney ’15, won and made a state consideration distance in the triple jump. Allison Culliney, Moeko Fukada ’15, and Autumn Warnock ’15, all participated in the high jump — a first for Island School. Josh Miller ’16, won the 800 meter race. Michael Miller ’15, won the 1500 meter run and Josh Miller came in 2nd. Jade Murphy ’16, won the 400 meter

ART – The Kaua‘i Museum’s Art Festival for middle school opened on Saturday and will be on display through March 22. Paintings, ceramics, photographs, and handmade prints by 28 Island School students are featured, along with art from Kapa‘a Middle School, Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School and St. Catherine’s Middle School. Congratulations to our award winners! 8th graders: Bianca Colagreco, 2nd place for two-dimensional artwork; Summer Mead, 3rd place for photography; Haley Sharp and Damia Cain, honorable mentions for ceramics Brianna Binder, Maile Mijares and Kelta O’Rourke, honorable mention for their collaborative ceramic piece. 7th graders: Athena Alexander, Dominic LaFratta, Brandon Nguyen and Jordan Roberts, honorable mention for their collaborative photo project. Christy Jo Williams was accepted to Creighton University in Omaha, NE, where she was awarded the Founders Award, and to University of Denver in Colorado. Kalena Wong was accepted to Creighton University in Omaha, NE, where she was awarded a Founders Award. She was also awarded a President’s Scholarship from University of Portland. Kellan Wortmann was accepted to Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Austin Cook’14, earns the rank of Eagle Scout from the Boy Scouts of America. His Eagle Scout Project includes building the shade structure for our new community garden.

HAWAIIAN STUDIES – Kumu Kauka had the honor of naming the Laysan Albatross chick on Cornell Lab of Orinthology’s live-video streaming website (http://www.albatrosskauai.org). Kaloakulua, named after the phase of the moon when it was born, is now five weeks old.

Professor Kokintz from Columbia University, Kaimana Carney ’14, complains to his assistant, Layne Taylor ’17, in a scene from “The Mouse That Roared.” Tickets for the show go on sale next week.

6th grade Boys Homeroom students are creating a beautiful, wooden wall hanging to donate to the Auction.
