Auction Nets $170,000
The Marriott’s Grand Ballroom was transformed into the romantic streets of Paris, complete with street singers and artists, chocolate and pastry shops and the Eiffel Tower. Hundreds of Island School supporters gathered to have a great time, while helping Island School raise much-needed operating and scholarship funds. Preliminary results are encouraging, especially considering the inclement weather and the struggling economy. Of the approximately $170k raised, over $99,000 was contributed to scholarships, which is $25,000 more than last year. From Bob Springer: “As with so much that Island School does, Saturday night was an all-school event, requiring the involvement of the entire Island School ‘ohana, from setting-up to cleaning up in two days, an incredible logistical accomplishment, made possible through months of preparation by numerous individuals. Special kudos to Alan King and Lulu Schilleci, chairpersons, and their committees. Through Island School’s Auction
more than money is raised, important as this is, but the community is solidified, reaching beyond itself to a worthy cause and demonstrating the vitality of the institution. As the song goes, “We are family,” and this is central to all that we do, something that can’t be bought or casually taken for granted.”
