Kaua‘ibots Score Big!
At the 2013 Hawai‘i Regional competition in Honolulu on April 4-6, Kaua‘ibots finished 28 out of an international field of 37 teams and competed in the quarter-final competitions. The Kaua‘ibots team is truly island-wide including students from all high schools on Kaua‘i. Our team was one of the highest scoring May Day Lu‘au Tickets Go robots at the competition and posted a 5-10-0 record. ART – The Kaua‘i Museum’s High School Art Festival opened on March 29, and will be on display through Friday, April 19. Congratulations to Island School’s award winners! Erica Gibson, ‘14, won third place in the 2-dimensional division for her reverse glass painting. Students explored the tidepools at Ahukini last Kyle Riddle, ‘15, won second place for his ceramic vase. And month with Ms. Mink. Students were able to learn and ask questions about an amazing endangered animal that is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. FIRST GRADE –The class is getting excited about their upcoming overnight trip to Koke‘e on April 2526. They will stay at the Discovery Center, where many activities are planned: a scavenger hunt at the Koke‘e Museum, hikes, Hawaiian legends and games. They will tie-dye

GEOGRAPHY - Congratulations to 8th grader, Andy Anderton, who won first place in the State National Geographic Geography Bee! He earned a prize of $100 and an all expense paid trip to represent Hawai‘i at the National Bee, held from May 20-25, in Washington D.C. He beat 50 other students from Hawai‘i. Andy was the 2011 winner as a 6th grader,

SENIOR UPDATE – Bronson Griep was accepted at Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA. He was one of 38,828 first-year applicants, of which only 5.7% were admitted! ALUMNI ACHIEVEMENT – Noah Randolph-Flagg, 07, was named a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow. Noah is currently a PhD student in Earth and Planetary Science at University of California at Berkeley. KINDERGARTEN – The class visited the taro patch at Waipa yesterday. They learned about growing and harvesting taro and how poi is made.

Classified Ads PONO PLAYERS 2013 AUDITIONS: The epidemic of bullying will be tackled again this year by Hawai‘i Childrens Theatre’s Pono Players. Auditions will be held Pono Players Auditions will be held on: Thurs/Fri, April 11 & 12, 3-5pm, Island School Room 7; Sat, April 13, 10am - 12pm, Island School Maile Computer Lab. CALLBACKS Sat, April 13, 1-3pm, Island School Maile Computer Lab. The auditions will consist of: an interview, theater games and exercises and cold reading from the script. Those auditioning need only come to one audition day. (They are welcome to come to more audition days if they wish.) They are not required to be at the audition the entire time, however the director will want to keep them at the audition until he has the information needed to make informed casting decisions. All those being considered will need to come to the CALLBACKS on Saturday, 4/13 from 1-3 pm. Rehearsals will be on: Thurs/Fri 4-6pm, Island School Maile Computer Lab, Saturdays 10-12noon, Island School Maile Computer Lab with additional rehearsals possible in May. Targeted Performance dates to begin on or around the week of Monday, May 6, and continue through the month of May. There may be some school day performances as well as evening and weekend performances.
EARTH DAY WITH MĀLAMA HULĒʻIA: Our next mangrove eradication workday is on Saturday, April 20 and Sunday, April 21 between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. We’ll be staging at Kaiola Canoe Club and working on mangrove removal directly behind Niumalu pavilion. KAUA‘I AUTHORS BOOK SALE & SIGNING EVENT: Kaua‘i authors will gather at Kukui Grove Mall on Saturday, April 13, to kick off National Library Week. More than 20 Kaua‘i Authors will set up tables on the mall displaying their publications, making their books available for sale. Authors will also be available to sign books and discuss their writing. A craft table for kids of all ages will also be set up throughout the day for children to make “Do Not Disturb—I’m Reading” door hangers. In addition, Russell the Rooster will make an appearance for a fun-filled afternoon show about how much Russell the Rooster loves reading books and libraries. A few volunteers are needed to staff both the craft table and the general author table with volunteers taking shifts to cover the 9:00 am – 5:00pm schedule. Senior Presentation Schedu l e The Senior Project is a tradition at Island School, as it is at other top-ranked, independent schools. Its purpose is to have students demonstrate their ability to conduct an independent study and arrive at a defensible conclusion on a topic of their choosing. Their results are presented in writing and orally, before a public audience. Beginning this evening and continuing tomorrow, the Class of 2013 will make their presentations. They are thirty minutes in length and will take place in three classrooms from 5:00-7:15 p.m. All are invited and guests are encouraged to move from room to room, choosing which presentations they’d like to see.
