Na Pua Keiki Receives Five Year Accreditation

CLUBS – Elementary students began their Wednesday Clubs this week. Clubs meet from 1:50-2:40 every Wednesday for four weeks. Offerings this trimester are: Drawing & Painting, Outdoor Games, Things That Float, French, Legos, Board & Card Games, Gardening, Hula, and Cooking. Ask your keiki which Club they have joined. SPIRIT WEEK – HS Student Government has declared next week to be Spirit Week for HS and MS. Elementary will join in on Wednesday & Thursday. • Monday-Pajama Day • Tuesday-Hippie Day • Wednesday-Animal Day (K-5 also) • Thursday-Black & White Day (K-5 also) • Friday-Camouflage Day Students choosing to dress up are expected to dress within Island School dress code rules. Those not participating must wear I.S. logowear as usual. Spirit week will culminate in a Pep Rally for all students on Friday, April 20, at 2:00 p.m. in the Wilcox Gym. SECOND GRADE – Students were asked by their art teacher, Penny Nichols, to imagine what might go on at Island School at night, when it’s dark and everyone is gone. Garrett Beyer has been accepted at University of San Diego in San Diego, CA. Congratulations! STUDENT COUNCIL – Elementary Student Council started the Pennies for Patients fundraiser this week. For three weeks they will be collecting change to help children with leukemia and other cancers. Jars have been distributed in classrooms for this purpose.

MIDDLE SCHOOL DANCE TOMORROW – Spanish Club is hosting a spring dance, “Baile de Primavera,” tomorrow, Friday, April 13, in the Main Hall, from 6:00-9:00 p.m. Those attending have turned in permission forms and the $10 cover charge per attendee, and are expected to follow the rules detailed therein. SPELLING – On March 24, at 7 p.m. on PBS Hawai‘i, the 2012 Hawai‘i State Spelling Bee was televised. There were 14 competitors from around the state. Eighth grade student, Emily Threlkeld, not only represented Island School, but also the island of Kaua‘i (as she had won at the district level). She did not win, but it was quite an honor to be among 14 contestants representing our state at that level of competition. It was a great experience for Emily and she can be proud of this accomplishment. Many thanks to Ms. Hampton-Eng for working with Emily in preparation.
