May Day Celebrates Anahola
Each year, our May Day program focuses on the uniqueness of a special area of the island. This year’s theme is “Hanohano Kalalea,” which means Glorious Kalalea. Kalalea Mountain, also known as King Kong, is close to Island School’s original campus in Kealia, and is prominent in the school’s first logo design. The area includes the Ko‘olau range, starting at the edge of Makaleha ridge, behind Kapahi and stretching all the way to Kilauea.
Our May Day team is rehearsing with students and making preparations. A highlight of the program will be our senior class performance of a special hula duet to honor the paniolo, or cowboys, of our island.
