Ha’ena I Ka Ehu Kai!
Ha‘ena - where the ocean spray covers the coastline. This year’s May Day celebrates the beauty and legends of Haena on Kaua‘i’s north shore. All are invited to the approximately 90 minute show beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, May 3, in the Wilcox Gymnasium. Every class from PK-8 and 12, is preparing a special performance that celebrates the Hawaiian culture. Members from the high school and middle school will perform in the May Day band with professional musicians. Immediately following the show is our lu‘au lunch, catered by Keoki’s of Lihu‘e. Tomorrow is the last day to purchase tickets for lunch. There is no admission charge for the May Day program. Hope to see you all there.
May Day Foliage Wanted
We will be needing lots of tropical flowers, foliage, ti plants, etc. to decorate our large stage in the Wilcox Gym. Please deliver by 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 2. Parents are welcome to help decorate the gym on Thursday afternoon, May 2, at 3:00 p.m.
No School Lunch on May Day Buses Depart at 12:30 p.m.
School is officially dismissed right after our May Day program, which will be between 11:00-12:00. The bus will depart Island School at 12:30 p.m. No school lunch will be served. However, the luau begins at 11:00 am immediately following the May Day program. Tickets should be purchased if students want to eat before boarding the bus. Please make arrangements to
meet the bus at the designated drop off points for your student.
May Day DVD Orders
This year, our enterprising Video Production students, with Mr. Evslin at the helm, are filming our May Day program. DVDs are $20 each, and proceeds will go toward more equipment for this class, which will continue to expand next year. http:// diamondmindinc.com/island.html. Booster Club Lei Fundraiser Help Needed
Booster members (and anyone else who would like to contribute or help) are needed to make fresh flower lei for the Booster Club to be sold at our lei stand on May Day (May 3rd). Volunteers are also needed to work the lei stand at 8 a.m. for about an hour. If you can donate lei or work the lei booth please contact Kymry Perez at 635-1490 or email Kymry@ Kymry.com.

KCC Bypass Road to Close Evenings & Sundays
Kaua‘i Community College will be closing the Kilohana/Chinese Gazebo bypass road to vehicular traffic beginning, Wed., May 1, at 10 p.m. Thereafter, the college will open and close the gate on a scheduled basis, Monday through Sunday, regardless of holidays and/or school breaks. Vehicular use of the bypass road between the east gate, at the Kilohana and KCC property line boundary, and the west gate, near the college’s Chinese gazebo will be restricted to these hours: Mon.– Sat. Open 5 a.m. - 10 p.m. Closed 10 p.m. - 5 a.m. Sundays Closed all day The college is concerned with recent security issues late at night on their campus. The Puhi Rd. access to Island School is not affected. We support their efforts and ask for everyone’s cooperation and understanding.
Juniors Encouraged to Apply The Gannon Loomis Memorial Scholarship will recognize a current Island School junior who excels in science, math and the performing arts, with a special emphasis on music. One $10,000 or two $5,000 scholarships will be awarded and applied to the winner’s senior year tuition at Island School. An application is attached to this week’s PC. Deadline is May 24.

KIF GOLF – With scores of 88 and 86, and a total of 174, Island School junior, Kari Whitworth, qualified for the HHSAA Girls State Golf Championship to be held at Royal Ka‘anapali Golf Course on Maui. The Championship will be held April 30 - May 1. Congratulations to Kari and to coaches Alan King and Sam Pratt. ENGLISH – On Friday, April 12, nine thoughtful writers from Mr. Reynolds’ Short Story and Poetry classes attended the Kaua‘i Literature Festival, Celebrate Reading. Seven national recognized authors read their work and discussed with the students the art of writing literature. In preparation for the event, these students read works by the presenting authors - Sue Coeing, Lisa Linn Kanae, Kealoha, Juliet S. Kono, Mark Panek, John Ritter, and Cathy
Song - and prepared short biographical sketches of each author. Over lunch with Mr. Reynolds, the students commented on the dramatic, performance-based work of Kealoha, the rapturous, paradoxical mind of John Ritter, the humorous, pigeon infused dialects of Lisa Linn Kanae, and the lasting, brilliant images of Cathy Song. Following the event, the students continued to edit their own personal work for the Junior/ Senior Creative Writing Anthology to be published at the end of May. SPELLING – (Correction) The 2013 Spelling Bee was held Friday April 12. Twelve students representing grades two through five participated. The ultimate champion was 5th grader, Rachel Dressler, successfully spelling the word blizzard! Fourth grader, Ethan Inanod, placed a strong 2nd. Paige Sanacora, Mason Hunt and Alexa Lauryn held on tightly in the championship round, which challenged the spellers with tricky words, homonyms, and unstudied words. There were 12 rounds in all. Representing their classes were: Second Grade: Kilinoe Oliveira, Paige Sanacora, Liko Edwards Third Grade: Dwight Apao, Tane Macko, Mason Hunt Fourth Grade: Reagan Wilson, Ethan Inanod, Alexa Lauryn Fifth Grade: Brianna Ryan, Rachel Dressler, Katie Cook. PHOTOGRAPHY – Mr. Dean and Ms. Penny invite students, parents and friends to a FREE Pinhole Photography Workshop this Sunday, April, 28, in celebration of Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day (WPPD)! 9:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m. in the Art Room. Participants will learn how to take pictures with a pinhole camera. Bring your own pinhole camera if you have one, and your lunch. Cameras will be provided as needed. Participants may post their photos on WPPD’s website, along with hundreds of others taken on the same day, for a worldwide pinhole photography exhibit. FOURTH GRADE – The class took a trip to Hanapepe Salt Pond today. They have been studying various types of marine life in class and this field trip gave them a first hand opportunity to explore some examples.
Members from the Kaua‘i Fire Department were on campus this week for a hands-on fire safety workshop. Students learned what to do in case of fire. Above, 1st grader, Aundrea Oxentine becomes familiar with fire fighting equipment.
EIGHTH GRADE – The Class of 2017 will celebrate their completion of Middle School and their transition into High School on Friday, May 17. This year, the group will be treated to a complimentary Snorkel Cruise to the Napali Coast with Captain Andy’s Sailing Adventures. Pinhole photograph by Gabri LaFratta. Dean Wakamoto has been a guest teacher in the art room, teaching a pinhole photography workshop to middle and high school. Under Mr. Dean’s expert instruction, students built their own pinhole cameras, shot photos and developed them.

LOOKING FOR YOUNG SCIENTIST-ACTORS! Want to get a jump start on that movie/science career? Class of 2007 Island School graduate Dianna Cowern is looking for student volunteers ages 10-13 to star in the pilot video for her new educational outreach project, Beach Physics. She’ll be filming an episode about UV radiation down at Kalapaki Beach on May 5th from 4pm to 7pm (time and location subject to change), and needs 2-5 students to participate and ask their burning questions about physics at the beach on camera. Dianna will be holding auditions at Island School after school on May 2nd on campus at 3:00 p.m. Come by to sign up for a speaking role! Every child who enters will be given a monetary (cash) award with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes also awarded to each of the winners from our (4) age groups. Happy & Kats Tamanaha will again be on hand to oversee the keiki-lei making and present awards to our winning keiki. An additional award is presented by Ms. Elvrine
