8th Grade Student & Parent Transition Meeting Tonight

Our 8th grade students have almost completed their middle school years and are getting ready for high school. In preparation for next year, you are invited to a transition meeting on May 1, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., in the Main Hall. This is an opportunity to ask questions and to share concerns, meet some of the high school teachers and learn about the goals and opportunities of high school. Pizza and drinks will be served. Flowers and Foliage Needed for May Day

The May Day committee is asking for donations of sturdy tropical flowers and greenery such as torch ginger, heliconia, Bird of Paradise, Laua‘e fern, fan palm, ti stalks (all colors), croton, Star of India, etc. Please drop off at Wilcox Gym on Thursday morning, May 8.

Community Service Opportunity: Humane Society Store and KCC Graduation

Kaua‘i Humane Society Thrift Store is moving! They need a few volunteers to help them move stock and fixtures from their current location near Subway Lihu‘e, to their new location behind the Shell Gas Station on Kuhio Hwy. They also need help with painting and cleaning. Students interested in 8-16 hours of community service, should email janis@kauaihumane.org for more details.

KCC needs helpers for their graduation on May 16th from 4-9 p.m. at Vidinha Stadium. Students interested in working as ushers or cleaners call Pua or Lana at 245-8011.

I.S. Chronicles MAYOR’S YOUTH TRACK MEET – Island School’s EL and MS students did well during last weekend’s two-day track meet, an event organized by the County of Kaua‘i at Vidinha Stadium.

Island School was the first-place middle school team. 4th grader Dwight Apao took the boys overall title in the Elementary Division out of hundreds of participants.

He also came home with the Male Athlete Award.

6th grader Waileia Edwards tied for the overall girl

title in the Middle School Division.

The 1st graders explore and build their own Menehune huts on the Berry Flat Trail, Koke‘e.

FIRST GRADE TRIP– First grade spent the night at the Discovery Center in Koke‘e last week. Below, Ryan Biedermann writes about their experience: On our field trip to Koke‘e, we made tie dyed shirts. Uncle Billy told spooky stories. We did a dance of girls vs. boys. It was so cool! We went on a hike to the Menehune huts.

We started to make our own. We jumped on the trampoline. I jumped on my back. We made s’mores.

Mmmmm! Now on that field trip I learned a lot. I had a super exciting, fantastic, terrific, cool time.

HONOR BAND – 8th grader Emily Sullivan is playing flute and representing Island School as a member of the Kaua‘i AllIsland Honor Band, which is comprised of 6th-12th grade students. The band will be performing with Top: 4th grader Dwight Apao, the Mayor’s Youth Track Meet’s the KCC Wind Male Athlete Award winner, and Coach Ms. Mariko. HULA – Na Pua O Kamaile, the Island School halau, performed at the Lihu‘e Business Association meeting at Duke’s restaurant. They chanted Oli Aloha No Kaua‘i, danced Nawiliwili, and chanted Pau‘ole Ko‘u Aloha (Endless Is My Love) in tribute to the late Hobey Goodale.

HS ASSEMBLY – High school students had a two-part assembly on Tuesday in preparation for Prom, which is on May 17th. The first part was a presentation by Kim Nizo, a member of MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving). She shared some very intense stories of why drinking and driving is a terrible combination. In a simulation of

a drunk driving death, Francis Green ‘15, and Ian Cowden ‘15, volunteered to read aloud letters written to the victim’s family by the driver and by the victim to his family. Students were visibly moved by the experience which was designed to encourage them to make good choices. This was followed

by a fashion show organized by Prom Committee Chair, Alyssa Medd ‘14, and featured appropriate prom attire modeled by four girls and two boys.

SENIOR UPDATE – Chad Andrade and Keana Green were both recipients of the Wai‘ale‘ale Project Scholarship at Kaua‘i Community College. Makali‘i Pratt was accepted to Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA. Congratulations!

WORLDWIDE PINHOLE PHOTOGRAPHY DAY – Nine enthusiastic photographers, students, parents and teachers attended Island school’s 2nd annual Worldwide Pinhole Photography (WPPD) workshop on Sunday April 27th. They captured 47 images around the Island School campus with handmade cameras made from a shoe box, a camera case and mailing tubes. With a little help from Mr. Dean they turned Ms. Penny’s art room storeroom into a darkroom where they developed their film. The next step for the Island School photographers is to scan their best photo, then post it on the WPPD gallery website at http:// pinholeday.org/gallery/.

KINDERGARTEN – The Kindergartners took a trip to Waipa last week Tuesday. They learned many important things about taro, such as all of its uses, how it is made into poi, its enemies and where they grow. The children got to go into the lo‘i and find snails, pick snail eggs off the taro plants and had a muddy, fun time! At the end, they brought home a bag of freshly made poi to enjoy with their families. It was a great day!

KIF TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP– The regular season concluded with the KIF Championship track meet last week Thursday and Friday at Vidinha Stadium. Island School produced the following individual champions: Emanuel Zafirides ‘14, 400-meter dash; Chan Hsu ‘14, 400-meter dash (she broke the KIF record during the qualifying round) and 1500-meter run; Joshua Miller ‘16, 1500-meter run and Allison Culliney ‘15, triple jump. THIRD GRADE TRIP – The 3rd graders are in the process of writing and illustrating books about their adventures on O‘ahu. The following is an excerpt from Eve Parker’s journal on the 3rd Grade O‘ahu trip.: My classmates and I went to the Honolulu Zoo Friday afternoon.

While the parents were having a

meeting at the Zoo entrance, the kids were climbing on an enormous tree that looked like an octopus. Soon the parents told us that we had to skip the Zoo, so we went to the Box Car Track. The Box Car Track had a windy road we had to go around in our cars and it was really fun!

STUDENT GOVERNMENT – Elections for Student Government officers for the 2014-2015 school year will be held soon. Those interested in running are encouraged to attend a meeting with Liz Hubbard tomorrow at 11:40 in the Kukui Room. Attendees should bring their lunches.

CAMPUS WILDLIFE – A pair of ‘Alae ‘Ula, endangered Hawaiian Mud Hens, hatched three chicks earlier this year. The family of five is thriving on the Island School Campus. Look for them around the reservoir.

ART – The HS Ceramics students are currently working on pieces that will be displayed in an art show from May 30 to June 2 in the Kaua‘i Society of Artists Gallery at Kukui Grove Center. One of their pieces will be a ceramic teapot.

The other will be a life-sized self Kira Catlin ‘15, portrait bust works on her piece for the Art Exhibit. made out of clay.

First Annual Student.Mov Festival It all started when our Tech teacher, Nathaniel Evslin was talking with I.S. parent Dino D’Annibale and Chris Kauwe, owner of Honi Honi Honey, about the lack of venues on Kaua‘i for students to share their video work. All three share an interest in helping students make and show their own films. The result of their conversation and creativity is Island School’s First Annual Student.

Mov Festival, on Saturday, May 10, at the Historic Waimea Theatre, from 3-5:30 p.m.

Students from all over Kaua‘i in grades 3-12 have been invited to participate. Over 40, 3-minute films have been submitted so far from Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School, Kapa‘a Middle School, Kekula Ni‘ihau, Hanalei Elementary, Waimea High, home school students and, of course, from Island School. The deadline for submission was today, May 1.

This year’s films are both documentary and fiction. They cover a wide range of topics including: feral cats, albatross, public service announcements about meth addiction, various interviews and even a horror story.

Judges will view the films and award prizes on the basis of creativity, technical skills and storytelling ability. The winners will be announced at the Festival. All of the films will be shown at that time.

Prizes include an iPad Mini, donated

by Melrose Mac in Los Angeles and a Grey’s Anatomy gift bag, filled with autograph souvenirs from the popular TV series, donated by Noah Evslin, who is a writer on the show. “Kaua‘i Economic Development Board (KEDB) has been extremely helpful in this project,” said Evslin. They donated GoPros for each school, rented the Waimea Theatre space and paid for the posters and banners.

“We plan on making this even better next year,” said Mr. Evslin. The festival will have a theme, which will narrow down the types of films being produced and help students focus on a topic. “We want to expand to include schools across the State,” he added.

The public is invited. Admission is $5.
