PONO PLAYERS: Pono Players, the educational outreach arm of Hawai‘i Children’s Theatre, will hold a public performance of Bully Survivor on Tuesday, May 22, at 6 p.m. at Island School. Admission is free. Bully Survivor is an original production created by its young cast members along with director Ed Eaton and manager Jessica Silver. The production consists of two parts: the first is a short, involving play in which we see the effects of bullying on a young middle school girl; the second is an interactive role-playing workshop with a fun game show theme, in which audience members will learn skills to help end bullying, then have a chance to try them out. The target audience for Bully Survivor is students in grades 4 to 6, though it is appropriate for all ages. The cast members range in age from sixth grade to young adult, with the majority being middle school students themselves. Several Island School students are in the cast: eighth graders Sterling Bird, Kaycee Lu, Makenna Olson, Raina Silver and Emily Threlkeld and 6th grader, Sydney Agudong. The production was made possible by a grant from the Annie Sinclair Knudsen Trust. The aim of “Bully Survivor” is to raise awareness about bullying, and to give audience members some ideas for what each of them can do to help end it. We encourage everyone to come!

Paradise by Margo Latif, ‘14 Some people wake up to the sounds of hate – Cars, beeps, and people in debates. When they look up they see metal in the sky – Things constantly distracting them from the beauties of the eye. When I wake up, I hear the waves on the sand I smell the fresh air, I grasp the world within my hands. When I look up, all I see is blue Happiness in the air sparks a smile between me and you. Through the day I feel a shadow covering me – When I look above, it’s the birds of Hawai‘i. On an island like this, lights are very rare And going out to dinner, your feet can be bare Though we’re surrounded by a world that’s noisy and concise, Remember how fortunate we are to live in paradise.
