Island School Receives Six Year Accreditation
This week, we received a letter from the Hawai‘i Association of Independent Schools (HAIS) and the Western Association of Schools & Colleges (WASC) notifying us that we have been granted a six-year term of accreditation. This is the longest term of accreditation offered. In three years, we will submit a progress report, which is a standard requirement. Being accredited serves several purposes, namely: • Certifies to the public that the school is a trustworthy institution of learning; • Validates the integrity of a school’s program and student transcripts; • Fosters improvement of the school’s programs and operations to support student learning; • Assures a school community that the school’s purposes are appropriate and being accomplished through a viable educational program; • Provides a way to manage change through regular assessment, planning, implementing, monitoring and reassessment • Assists a school/district in establishing its priority areas for improvement as a result of the perpetual accreditation cycle. Receiving this accreditation is validation that Island School continues on a positive track.

National Honor Society Congratulations to the 20 new members A group of twenty Island School high school students were installed as members of Island School’s chapter of the National Honor Society on Tuesday evening in the Frear Center. Emeline Wu, president, introduced four NHS members, who spoke of the pillars of Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Character as they lit candles representing each. Michelle Poirson, Sarah James, Jayke Manzano and Garrett Beyer each lit a candle; Steven Baptiste read a poem. These students are all seniors. The initiates promised to uphold the four NHS Pillars. Scholarship, represented by the yellow candle, means a commitment to learning. Service, the purple candle, means a willingness to work for the benefit of those in need without monetary compensation or recognition. Leadership, the green candle, requires members to exert a wholesome influence on the school. Character, the blue candle, is about respecting oneself and being respected by others. Initiates took the following pledge to keep in mind the guiding principles of NHS: I pledge myself to uphold The high purposes of Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character Of the National Honor Society To which I have been selected. Striving in every way By work and deed To make its ideals The ideal of my school And of my life. Students applying for membership to NHS must be recommended by one of their peers and by a member of the Island School faculty. The entire faculty is asked to approve the final selections.
Mary Capwell, Chair of the Academic Affairs Committee of the Island School Board of Directors, was the keynote speaker at Tuesday’s event. She spoke about the origins of the National Honor Society in 1921, by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. She commented on each of the NHS pillars. The faculty advisor of NHS is Jim Bray. The event was organized by the current members, led by president, Emeline Wu. After the ceremony, initiates, their friends and families enjoyed a potluck dinner. New members to NHS are: juniors - Braden Beck, Bronson Griep, Travis Kim, Christian Potter, Austin Taylor, Cy Whitlock, Ava Zebzda; sophomores - Lansen Eto, Ryan Feather, Quinn Hannah-White, Kelly Kay, Margo Latif, Kirsten Malapit, Alyssa Medd, Kristina Scheppers, Christy Jo Williams, Kalena Wong, Ivana Wu; freshmen Jacob Dysinger, Imara Joroff.
