I.S. Chronicles STUDENT GOVERNMENT – Students elected their Student Government Officers this week. Candidates gave speeches on Tuesday and Wednesday, with elections held yesterday.

Daniel Bicciche was honored last week with the “Stepping Up To The Plate” Award, for having a “can do” attitude!

6th grade PE students prepare a nutritious breakfast

SPANISH – Spanish V students taught the PreK class one final session of Spanish on Tuesday by singing Spanish songs, watching Ferdinand the Bull in Spanish and celebrating with a fiesta. The Spanish V students even put on their own bullfight skit; one matador, one bull, one announcer and plenty of REAL swords to touch and hold. It’s been a wonderful learning experience being able to share the Spanish language with the PreK! PHYSICAL EDUCATION – Ms. Mariko’s 6th and 7th graders went to the kitchen today for a lesson on nutrition. 6th graders cooked a healthy breakfast and 7th prepared a healthy snack using all organic local produce and kale from the elementary garden!

Margo Latif: President of Student Government, 2013-2014

Below, 2nd graders paint a backdrop for their Rainforest Festival.

Appointed positions will be announced by Student Activities Director, Liz Hubbard, tomorrow. FOURTH GRADE – Another poem from this talented class of writers: I am fast I can fly I hope you stay away when I am hunting hope you are not a mouse, fish, and other small animals like that. Do you know w ho I am? by Jaden DeSouza THIRD GRADE – Students are completing their study of communities. Acting as “city planners,” they designed a community and created a wall mural showing all the details. Over the past several months, they have learned the various elements that make up communities and how they function. Each child developed an identity, with ancestors, a family history, an occupation

and a personality. They made clayheaded puppets (pictured below) and put on puppet shows this week telling their stories. Now they are in the process of electing a mayor and city council members as they learn about government. They will identify a problem faced by the community and attempt to find a solution.

AUDITIONS: Calling all actors and directors! Women In Theatre’s 2013 KAUA‘I SHORTS auditions will be held at Wit’s End in the Coconut Marketplace Thursday May 30, 6-8pm, and Saturday, June 1, 10am - noon. Callbacks (if necessary) will be Tuesday June 4, 6-8pm. Performances will be August 9 and 10, at KCC Performing Arts Center. The Island’s own biennial ten minute play festival will feature 16 original ten minute plays and 6 staged readings. A reprise of selected plays will be presented at Wit’s End, , August 16, 17 & 18. This is a wonderful opportunity for those who have always wanted to try something new as well as seasoned actors & directors who appreciate the freedom of the ten minute play: minimal set, fewer rehearsals & small cast. Please contact Nellie Foster via email at nellie613@gmail.com if you have questions or a problem with audition dates. WANTED: Queen size bed in good condition. Contact Peggy at peggy@ischool.org or 808-6397953.

SUMMER BABYSITTING OR OTHER WORK WANTED: I.S. senior, Joy Claypoole is looking for summer work to save up for college expenses. She loves babysitting! She is also willing to do other summer jobs. Please contact her at (808) 6358533. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Chorus Parents are needed for the 2013-2014 school year. A Chorus Parent is responsible for recruiting and managing groups of volunteers for tasks associated with the chorus program and its various events. The Chorus Parent does not have to do everything, but does need to solicit other parents to help. This year’s chorus included 145 students, meaning that a large percentage of the Island School ‘ohana participated in and was affected by chorus happenings. This requires active support from parents. Parents interested in volunteering for next year should contact Mr. Steinbacher at philip@ischool.org.
