KIF Athletes Recognized at Sports Banquet

Fun Under the Sun w/ Mr. Dean & Ms. Rachelle New inductees into the Letterman Club were honored Friday night Eighty-three athletes were recognized at Friday’s Sports Banquet, held in the Wilcox Gymnasium on Friday evening. Four new students were inducted into the Letterman Club for participating in four varsity sports: Autumn Warnock, ‘15, Allison Culliney, ‘15, Kalena Wong, ‘14, and Cole Moore, ‘13. Joy Claypoole, ‘13, and Ryan Perez, ‘12, were also recognized for their second year in the Letterman’s Club. Lauren Claypoole and Ryan Perez won the Blue & Gold Award to the high school athlete who has a minimum of a 3.0 GPA, the student athlete who demonstrates outstanding support for the Voyager athletics program and Island School as a whole. Nominations for this award are made by coaches and Booster Club membership. Decisions are made by the Booster Club Steering Committee: Lynne MacDonald, Sean Magoun, Kaipo Kealalio, Jen Pomroy, Charlene Steuri, Joey Caminos and Kymry Perez. Those whose children are nominated for this award do not participate in conversations about their own children. Many thanks to Kymry Perez, who has volunteered to take on the position of Booster Club President for 2012-2013.

All students ages 4 to 10 are invited to spend three weeks of fun during summer break. The days will be filled with art, science, outdoor and indoor play, photography, cooking and water play. If you can provide monstera leaves, haleconia, bird of paradise, torch ginger, ti, la‘ue fern, etc., please drop them off in the Wilcox Gym today or tomorrow, Friday, June 8. Dot Schmidt has been a most appreciated volunteer in the 2nd grade class this year. This is her 3rd year volunteering. “I feel at home here,” she said. “I need my kid fix!” She and her husband just became permanent Kaua‘i residents after traveling back and forth from Nevada for the past two years. Dot is a retired kindergarten and first grade teacher, originally from the San Francisco Bay area. She feels she received a lot of support in her thirty years of teaching. “Now it’s my turn to return the favor.”

PHYSICS – For their final project of the year, Dr. Kozak’s students designed and built a Rube Goldberg machine. Students were required to design a minimum of eight unique interactions per group member. In addition, the students were required to submit a paper describing the physics involved with each interaction, referring to what they learned throughout the year. PHYSICAL EDUCATION – Students in grades 2 - 8 continue to set goals and work toward the President’s Challenge Physical Fitness Testing Program. Ms. Jackie announced that a record number of students earned both the Presidental and National Fitness Awards this year. On another note, second grader, Ryden Williams has broken the school record by performing 102 right angle push ups! The previous record breaker was Chad Andrade, ‘14, in 2006, with 100 right angle push ups.

STUDENT GOVERNMENT – High school students voted for President of their 2012-2013 Student Government last week. Running for the office were Braden Beck, Joy Claypoole and April Oo. Each candidate gave a speech at Morning Meeting on Friday; the voting took place immediately afterward. Congratulations to April, who won the election. She will be joined by Christian Potter as vice-president, Kalena Wong, Secretary, Moeko Fukada, Treasurer, Danielle Caminos, VP of Public Relations and Marcus Punua, Chief of Staff. Class representatives will be elected when school resumes in August.

THIRD GRADE – The class and 12 chaperones had an adventure on the North Shore last Thursday. They visited Steven & Merlyn Ruddell’s home, the Secret Garden, where they petted baby goats, fed chickens and read the chicken stories they wrote to the chaperones. Then they hiked down the steep trail to Secret Beach and had a great time swimming in a large tide pool. Later, the class hiked back up to the Secret Garden and finished the day swimming in their beautiful salt water pool. It was a day to remember!

MIDDLE SCHOOL – Middle School students participated in an end of year Field Day during homeroom last week. They teamed up in their Na Hui teams and rotated through four events: basketball shooting, hula hooping, tug of war and dodgeball.

AMERICAN LITERATURE – Ms. Edwards’ sophomore class had a remarkable year. They read an impressive number of books, essays and stories. Each student took the class seriously, listening well and making a concentrated effort on homework and writing assignments. Students compiled portfolios that exhibit their fine work. NA PUA KEIKI – The Pirates of Na Pua Keiki are camping out on campus tonight. They’ll dine in the galley, play pirate games and follow a pirate map to the hidden treasure. The evening will close with a pirate movie, provided by Max’s Uncle Chris’ outdoor movie screen. They’ll wake up for the Beach Blast-Off tomorrow at Po‘ipu.


I.S. Chronicles THIRD GRADE – The class completed their books about their class trip to O‘ahu. The beautifully bound book described each activity, with each page creatively illustrated with drawings and mixed-media collages. Amber Asuncion tells of the Wet and Wild Water Park they visited on day 2, below: I was screaming in the van the whole time to the water park. As soon as we got there, I ran out and met my friends at the gate. It was as exciting as going to a concert! Sydney, Nahe, Callie, and I went on all the rides together. I had the best time. My favorite ride was the RUSSIAN RIVER. I absolutely loved it. Finally, we packed up and went straight to the Waikiki Aquarium. JOURNALISM – The class completed the spring edition of SWITCH, a teen news magazine. A PDF copy of it is attached to this week’s Parent Connection. MATH & SCIENCE – Seniors Kelly Culliney, Jayke Manzano, and Emeline Wu, pictured below, were given Math/Science All Star jackets by Ms. Mink to go with the awards they received at last week’s Academic Awards Assembly. State Senator Ron Kouchi presented Emeline Wu, ‘12, a proclamation honoring her as a National Merit Scholarship finalist. Emeline scored in the top 1% of all college bound juniors who took the PSAT/NMSQT in the fall of 2010.
