Welcome Two New English Teachers
We are happy to announce the addition of Dave Reynolds (left) and Judah Freed to our English Department! Mr. Reynolds graduated from Yale University in 2002, with a degree in English Language and Literature. He is originally from Milford, Connecticut, and, more recently, from Venice Beach, California. He taught English literature for five years on the East Coast before moving to California to work as a tutor in the Los Angeles area, specializing in preparing students for college entrance exams. He’s extremely happy to be here, where he can do two of his favorite things: teach and surf! He will be teaching several upper level literature and writing classes. Mr. Freed is well known on Kaua‘i for his roles in some of our local theatre productions and for his service last year as Special Sections Editor of The Garden Island newspaper. He graduated from Loretto Heights College, in Denver, CO, with a dual major in journalism and communication. He researched advanced communication theory through the Individualized MA program of Antioch University in Yellow Springs, OH. He has extensive experience as a writer, publishing more than a thousand articles and three books. He further has served as
a faculty member at several schools and universities in Colorado. He’s teaching the American literature, yearbook and journalism classes.
Changes in Administration
Joan Shaw is making a transition to a half-time position. Her duties will focus on two areas: college counseling and development. She will continue to work closely with high school students and their families to ensure that they are supported throughout the college planning and application process. In addition, her work with Daryl Edwards, Bob and the Board in the area of development and fundraising will continue. You can find Joan on campus every A day and on other days as needed.
New(er) Buses
Our “fleet” of buses was upgraded over the summer. Three newer vehicles were purchased for the comfort of our students. Bus transportation to and from school began on Monday to Wailua/Kapa‘a and the north shore. They are currently filled to capacity!
Be a Voyager Booster!
The Booster Club plays a vital role in supporting our student athletes, coaches and the athletic program. Your monetary support from membership dues allows us to purchase athletic equipment and offset costs for off-island travel and athletics events such as the annual Sports Banquet and Coaches’ Social. SAT Prep Courses
Recommended for seniors who plan to take the SAT this fall (October 6, November 3, and/or December 1). PK PARENT ORIENTATION – Parents rotated through four math stations and then were challenged to identify the HighScope KDI (Key Developmental Indicators) for each activity at last week’s orientation evening. The keiki began short sessions this week in small groups to learn the ropes in Miss Sue’s class. The entire class will attend tomorrow for a half day and on Monday for a full day. DRAMA – Auditions for this year’s high school play, Skinflints and Scoundrels: Moliére’s Miser are on Tuesday, August 21, in the Main Hall. Call backs on August 22. The cast will meet on Friday, August 24 for a readthrough, from 3 - 4:30 p.m. See Peggy Ellenburg for audition scripts and for coaching.

CHORUS – Auditions for Island School Singers are on Wed/Thurs, August 22 & 23 at 3:00 p.m. in the Music Room. Singers is an advanced choral performing class for high school students seeking vocal and musical challenges. Rehearsals are every Thursday from 3:00-5:00 p.m., with major concerts in December, April, and June. All high school students are eligible to audition. Those with the ability to sing and the willingness and ability to commit to rehearsals will get cast. Contact Mr. Steinbacher for more information at philip@ischool.org.
Ms. Connie’s 2nd grade class took advantage of the beautiful day to go outside for a lesson on classification.
ALUMNI UPDATE – Lauren Claypoole, Class of 2012, was recently informed she is one of the four young women in the nation to earn the Linda Riddle/SGMA Endowed Scholarship from the Women’s Sports Foundation. Lauren was awarded Island School’s Scholar Athlete Award in June, 2012, as well as the Booster Club’s 2012 Blue & Gold Award for her outstanding support of the Voyager Athletics Program. She is soon off to Williams College in Williamstown, MA. PHYSICAL EDUCATION – Our new PE teacher, Mariko Strickland, introduced her elementary and middle school classes to the climbing wall this week. Located in the Weinberg Gym, this new equipment gives students practice in numerous skills.

CALCULUS – Dr. Kozak announced the scores from last spring’s AP Calculus exams. Congratulations to Daniel Wu, a ninth grader who took the exam as an eighth grader and earned a perfect 5! Two of last year’s seniors, Jayke Manzano and Michelle Poirson, each earned a 4. Students taking certain honors classes may elect to take this challenging exam in the spring for college credit. A score of 4 or above is accepted for college credit at most colleges and universities.

VETERANS NEEDED FOR DOCUMENTARY: The County of Kaua‘i’s suicide prevention division has funded a documentary about veterans returning from the wars and their process of reintegrating into everyday life. Interviewees are needed to complete this project. All ranges of the spectrum are needed— from those easily reintegrating into society to those who struggled all the way to those suffering with major issues, including depression and posttraumatic stress disorder.
