An Accident Waiting to Happen?

We have observed a few near misses in the parking lot and driveway in front of the school during drop-off and pick-up times. So many cars converging with so many people makes for dangerous conditions. Everyone is asked to SLOW DOWN to a crawl in these areas (5 MPH or less). And keep a look out for cars backing out of parking stalls, distracted children emerging from blind spots, and the unexpected. DO NOT USE YOUR MOBILE PHONES WHILE YOUR VEHICLE IS IN OPERATION. Introducing Ernie Blachowiak

The Blachowiak family has been a force at Island School since daughter, Juli, enrolled as a kindergartner in 1996. Shortly thereafter, Ernie signed on as our tennis coach, and has been inspiring our high school athletes ever since. His wife, Debra serves on our Board of Directors. We are thrilled to add Ernie to our faculty as teacher of 8th and 9th grade social studies. A recent graduate from University of Hawai‘i, Ernie was the keynote speaker at May’s KCC commencement ceremony. You might have seen him on stage in one of numerous Hawai‘i Children’s Theatre of Kaua‘i Community Players productions or backstage dressed in black!

Booster Club Boasts New Members!

Our athletes should be champs in every sport if booster support and spirit is any indication of their success! There are four new Gold memberships, new banner supporters and three new and very generous donations to Booster Cllub.

I.S. Chronicles

CHORUS – Students in middle school music have been working on a project exploring listening and the way in which music creates a mood. Mr. Steinbacher and Ms. Alfiler shared music of various styles and genre and from different time periods. After listening, students talked about the pieces in small groups to determine and discuss each mood. Students then identified the musical elements they believed helped create the mood. In this way they were able to explore their own responses to music and the techniques used by composers to create each mood. The final piece in this project will be an exploration of Leonard Bernstein’s “Mambo” from West Side Story, where students will learn about Bernstein and his place as a contemporary American composer. Students will compare and contrast the images and ideas Bernstein’s music evokes in them with the images and movement in the film version of West Side Story. SPANISH – 8th graders are busy preparing their Family Tree posters to be presented next week in class. DRAMA – Congratulations to the cast of, “It’s About Time,” our fall high school theatre production: Quinn Hannah-White, Jasmine Libert, Griffin Lord, Kim McDonough, Teddy Rose and Christy Williams; also to student director, Jacob Dysinger. Their show consists of three short plays by David Ives, with entr’acte music

KINDERGARTEN – Students are doing a unit called, “I am Special.” They are learning about what makes each person unique and special. Each student has created a family project about themselves that includes some of their favorite things including: food, color, things to do and places to visit. MATH – This year a new math course was added in the high school. Advanced Math Study is intended for students who have already completed all of the math courses offered by Island School and gives students the opportunity to earn college credit. The students may choose to either take math courses through Stanford University’s EPGY program online and earn college credit, or students may choose to learn advanced material through independent study. This year three students are taking this course: Emeline Wu, ‘12, is taking Differential Equations through Stanford; Lauren Claypoole, ‘12, is studying AP Chemistry and also Statistics through independent study; and Cy Whitlock, ‘13, is taking Calculus B/C through Stanford. Dr. Kozak is facilitating this course. HIGH SCHOOL RETREAT – Seniors left yesterday for day one of their retreat at Waipa Foundation

MIDDLE SCHOOL RETREAT – Tomorrow, the entire middle school student body will spend the day at Hanapepe Salt Ponds participating in team-building activities, with a special focus on the 6 R’s: being Reflective, Responsible, Resilient, Reliable, Respectful and Responsive.
