Churros For Sale
Members of High School Spanish Club will be selling snacks during lunch break two days a week, on B-days. Available for purchase will be churros and ice tea from the freshman lounge during the month of October. Last year’s sale was so successful they sold out in 20 minutes! Items are $2 each.

Don’t Stay Thirsty, My Friends
Our Flo Water refilling station stands at the ready to quench all ages of thirst. Your children only need a refillable water bottle and a quarter (or more, depending on the size of their bottle). This chilled and 6-times filtered water has replaced plastic water bottles and plastic classroom water jugs in an effort to produce less plastic waste and to keep our water free from plastic contaminants. So drink up and enjoy!
Glee Give a Note Contest
The Island School Alaka’i Chorus is officially entered in the “Glee Give a Note” contest, and we need your help to be among the schools who win
$50,000. Island School freshman, Jacob Dysinger, completed a short video over break and you can view it online at http://www.gleegiveanote. com/vote_details.php?id=164. Click on VOTE - you can vote EVERY DAY! Post the link to your social networking sites and send it to your email lists. Even though we’re a tiny school, our network is huge. Funds raised will be used to expand our popular chorus programs. We can do this!
Art Day Supplies Needed
All sizes of plastic containers are needed, with and without lids. Lots of brown coconuts - for a coconut painting project. Please contact Penny at penny@ ischool.org, or drop them off in the Art Room.
School Pictures Retake Next Wednesday
Make Up/Retake Day is Wednesday, October 19. Students who did not have their school picture taken earlier this year should fill out the order form and bring it on Wednesday. Students who are not satisfied with their school photos are welcome to return their portrait package and retake their picture at no additional charge. Order forms are available in the Office.

Cross Country Help Needed
Thank you to those who assisted with the last Cross Country Meet. We are again asking for your help with this Saturday’s Cross Country Meet. It is the KIF Championship meet, therefore more volunteers are needed. If you are available from 8:00 to about 11:30 a.m., please contact Jen at jenp@ischool.org. This is the final meet of the year. If you haven’t had the chance to see our Voyager runners please come, volunteer and cheer for the Voyagers!
Parking Kokua
Four parking spaces between the Frear and the keiki playground have been coned off in order to widen the driveway and ease traffic flow and safety concerns. No parking will be allowed there at any time. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
McGruff Visits Next Week Students in PK-1 will meet with McGruff the Crime Dog on Wednesday to learn how to identify a dangerous stranger. Those in grades 2-5 will learn about bicycle and pedestrian safety. Information was passed out to students in PK-8

KIF CROSS COUNTRY – The Voyagers have enjoyed quite a bit of success in cross country the last two years. We have had the most participation ever and have consistently fielded competitive teams for both the boys and girls. The boys and girls have won all but one individual KIF race over the last two seasons. Two Voyagers from Island School’s halau last year are now running at the NCAA performed at the Queen division 1 level, Pierce Murphy at Emmalani Festival in Koke‘e the University of Colorado and Lauren last Saturday. KIF AIR RIFLERY – The Voyagers came close to being in a 3-way tie, however the loss to Waimea by 24 points took the team out of contention. The boys posted their best score - 1130 points. It was a short season, only six matches. Our Voyager team is to be congratulated. FOURTH GRADE – On October 26, students will be participating in E Ho`opomaika`i ia na Manu `A`o, a ceremony celebrating the release of rehabilitated fledgling a‘o (Newell’s shearwaters). To prepare for the event, the class was visited today by Brooke McFarland, an organizer of the project, which is coordinated through the efforts of Save Our Shearwaters, the Kaua‘i Endangered Seabird Recovery Project, Dept. of Fish and Wildlife and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. DIVE CLUB –NAUI Divemaster (and board member and I.S. parent & alum) Howatt King gave a presentation to high school students yesterday. Howatt has extensive background leading dives and participating in scientific marine studies. He invited Dive Club members to become involved in the Volunteer Survey Project coordinated by REEF, an ocean conservation organization. Participants would become certified divers and learn to identify and gather scientific information about marine life. For more information, visit www.reef.org.

Classified Ads MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY – SATURDAY, OCT. 22: The Friends of Kamalani & Lydgate Park are seeking volunteers to help w/ various projects at and around Lydgate Beach Park. Everyone is invited to volunteer at any time between 7:30am and noon on that day. Lunch is provided! Volunteer projects include: assisting with food service, building and painting new picnic benches, debris & trash pick up, and repairs to the soon-tobe-opened overnight family camp sites. Project coordinators will be on hand to guide and work along side volunteers. Art Day
An Island School Tradition Friday, October 21, is our annual Art Day. The Art Day committee is planning a day-long celebration of the arts for the entire student body. Twenty-seven different workshops will be taking place for students in grades pre-K to 12. Guest artists will offer workshops in everything from vegetable carving to abstract oil pastels; from digital photography to mixed media collage . Workshops will be followed by a school-wide Art Walk in the central courtyard. Parents and friends are encouraged to come check out the exhibit between 1:00 and 2:30 p.m.
Volunteers Needed!
Volunteers are an essential part of Art Day. They work alongside the guest artists in the classrooms. It’s loads of fun and such a creative way to pass the morning. If you would like to volunteer to assist a guest artist in the classroom, email joan@ischool.org or speak to your child’s homeroom teacher. Cindy Wortmann is organizing a special luncheon for the guest artists and volunteers that will take place immediately following the workshops. Please look for a “VolunteerSpot” email from Cindy and sign up to bring a dish or help out with the set up, serving or clean up. Your kokua is greatly appreciated. Photos are from Art Day 2010.
