Art Day Artists & Helpers Needed

Scheduled later than usual this year, Art Day will be on Friday, November 8. Artists are being lined up to teach workshops to children in all grades and a few spots remain to be filled. Please spread the word to your artist friends. You can let them know how fun it is and that they will be treated to a special Artist’s Luncheon. Speaking of that, coordinators for the luncheon are also needed. Contact Penny at penny@ischool. org if you know of an artist or want to volunteer as a helper.

I.S. Chronicles

8th graders, Sierra Jonas, Risa Whetzel and Aliana Ho earned their SCUBA certification over break from instructors, H. Peter King (left) and Joe Corbo. SCUBA – Three 8th grade girls spent a loooong day with their SCUBA instructors last week. They made five pool dives and four open water dives between the hours of 8 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. But it was all worth it, as they received their PADI SCUBA certification and are now looking forward to being certified up to 60’! They agreed that it is “really cool breathing under water and being with the fish,” as opposed to floating above them. The classroom portion of the course was challenging, but definitely useful when they got in the water. MUSIC – Filipino Jazz star singer Charmaine Clamor made a special visit to our first grade music class. They sang a few Halloween songs for her, then she sang a traditional Tagalog lullaby that her mother used to sing to her. She told the students she started singing in the back of the bus in the Philippines when she was three years old, and hasn’t stopped since. The students showered her with hugs and love before she left. (See photo below.)

HULA – Our halau performed to the delight of the big gathering in Koke‘e last weekend at the Eo e Emalani Alaka‘i

Festival. Those representing Island School included: Shawna Dinnan, Moeko Fukada, Mabel Kha, Gabri LaFratta, Kirsten Malapit, Alaya Mallas, Salisa Pegeder, Pualei Pratt, Jessica Raitz, Ajia Sclafani, Rebecca Stevens, Layne Taylor, Maureen Valdez, Christy Williams, Ally Worley and Lia Yamasato. (See photo at right.) ROBOTICS – Congratulations to our middle school robotics team, eighth graders Summer Mead, Julia Massaro, and Emily Sullivan, for winning first place at last week’s North Shore VEX Middle School Tournament at Waialua Intermediate and High School on O‘ahu. Eighteen teams from all over the state competed in the North Shore tournament, with Island School being the only Kaua‘i team participating. “It was a crazy day of qualifying,” said team adviser and Island School science teacher, Traci Sullivan. “We won lots of matches and we lost a few, too. Our girls had a great defensive [ro]bot with an especially good autonomous mode and our ally was good at scoring.” (For those new to robotics, an autonomous robot is able to carry out functions with little or no human intervention and to collect information from its environment it can use to accomplish tasks.) The team is grateful to mentors, Steve Massaro and James Massaro, for sharing their time and expertise. Island School and its alliance won six straight matches in the finals and in the end, won the tournament in the last round with a score of 44 to 48! The girls have officially qualified for the State Tournament that will be held in December on O‘ahu! STAFF ACHIEVEMENT – Congratulations to Sierra Hampton-Eng, who was married to Justin Kollar earlier this month! More congrats to our very own “Ironman,” Mary Castelanelli, who completed her very first Ironman last weekend in Kona! Mary swam, biked and ran for over 11 hours!

CHEMISTRY – Students are performing an earth science lab about the behavior of water with different temperatures and thus different densities. By mixing colored water with different temperatures, students learn how cool surface water, which forms in the polar regions, and which has a greater density than warm surface water, sinks and moves toward the tropics. This causes ocean currents and consequently the weather around the world.

Leila Breen & Michaela Fitzgerald mix different temperatures of water in a chemistry lab. SENIOR UPDATE – Angelique Silvestre was accepted at Northern Arizona University. Congratulations!

Mary Castelanelli crosses the finish line at the Kona Ironman
