For personal reasons, our English teacher, David Lohrey, has resigned. He is a fine teacher, and we are sorry to lose him. Replacing Dr. Lohrey is Nicole Street, a recent arrival from Long Beach, CA. She holds a BS from Colorado State University (Fort Collins, Colorado) and an MFA in creative writing from California State University (Long Beach, CA), where she received the Distinguished Masters Award and the William Memorial Scholarship Award for Poetry. In addition, she has conducted business writing seminars, been a panelist at numerous conferences, spent time in Paris studying French, and learned about Teaching English as a Second Language through the Oxford Seminars International. Welcome Nicole!

I.S. Chronicles
Leadership skills were practiced at the Student Government Retreat at Makalani Farm last weekend.
STUDENT GOVERNMENT – Our high school student leaders spent the weekend at Makalani in Kilauea at a leadership retreat. They prepared their own meals and ate family style in the dining area. As a service to the farm, they cleared weeds, potted plants and prepared an area for a vegetable garden. They practiced collaboration and planning skills and used them to develop ideas to be used this year, including Prom. Their hosts, Lyn and Eric Taylor, were impressed with our students and sent this message to Adie: “Eric and I wanted to compliment you on the group, their attitude and their overall great behavior when they visited last weekend. It was obvious that they had a really good time and we enjoyed meeting each of them. You and Liz (Hubbard) are doing something right, and it shows.”
VIDEO PRODUCTION – The class has been working on a story that will be aired at 7:30 tonight on Hiki No, the youth television network. Their story, “Only in Time,” is about Eli Smart ‘17, and Ian Cowden ‘15, and their band OCDC and their creative process. Jacob Dysinger ‘16, is the reporter for the story, as well as camera man and editor. Sam Goldberg ‘16, is also an editor and camera man. Ian Cowden also edited. Tune in tonight on Hawai‘i Public Television. FOURTH GRADE – Students wrote poems during their Shel Silverstein week. Here’s an example by Luca Rivera. FLASHLIGHTS Flashlights are fun. They are like the sun shining at night. Oh so bright! Some are big. Some are small. It doesn’t matter. I love them all! There’s one for you and one for me. Quick! Let’s shine them in that tree! Tell me. What do you see?
STUDENT COUNCIL – Congratulations to 8th graders Brianna Binder and Kenz Hubbard, who were elected president and vice president, respectively, to the “13-’14 Middle School Student Council. Elections were held this week. Class Representatives were also elected. 8th - Ryan Yavinsky (girls are voting today) 7th - Dominic LaFratta, Solei Errico 6th - Max Rovinsky, Waileia Edwards
Makoa Pratt ‘17, shows 5th graders, Titus Kanehe and David Carlsson, that carbon dioxide gas is more dense than air.
HAWAIIAN STUDIES – Our halau, Na Pua O Kamaile, performed this morning at the re-opening ceremony of the Lihu‘e Library.
SCIENCE – Students in Mrs. Sullivan’s 9th grade science class got together with fourth and fifth graders last week for an exciting science
Senior athletes Bella Voorhies, Hailey Lord and Ivana Wu were recognized at the final KIF Volleyball game and at Friday’s pep rally.
activity. The older students set up science stations around the room for the 4th & 5th graders to explore fluid mechanics. Labs using potato shooters, microwave ovens, hair dryers, marshmallows, balloons, and vacuum cleaners dotted the classroom and the outside lanai. Everyone learned a lot and had fun with science. ENGLISH – Savannah Tripoli ‘16, was selected as a finalist in an essay contest sponsored by the Hawai‘i Access to Justice Commission and the Hawai‘i State Bar Association. The topic was about meaningful volunteering and “What it means to me.” Congratulations Savannah!
Elementary student winners of the KIUC Calendar Contest were recognized at Morning Circle yesterday by their teachers, Penny Nichols and Deatri Nakea. See page 4 for more on this.
