Solar Project Nears Completion
Halloween Plans
The crew from RecSolar pulled the cable from the solar panels to the box this week as our solar project gets ready to go online. All School Pep Rally Nov. 2
Student Government will recognize our KIF fall athletes on Friday afternoon with the year’s first pep rally. As the final day of Spirit Week, students may dress in red, white and blue in honor of the upcoming elections. We will invoke our newly created Assembly Schedule, which creates a 60 minute assembly period at the end of the day by taking 15 minutes from each block.
Island School Announces Yearbook Cover Art Contest For middle and high school students. The winning Island School student artist will receive $50, recognition in the Parent Connection, credit in the yearbook masthead, plus a free copy of the yearbook. Rules are attached to this week’s PC. Contact Judah Freed for more information at judah@ ischool.org. Contest deadline for all submissions is Friday, November 30.
Island School students celebrate Halloween at all grade levels. While regularly scheduled classes are held as usual, the day (and week) is generously sprinkled with costumes and festivities. Na Pua Keiki - Wednesday, Oct. 31 • Costume Parade - 9:00 a.m., followed by the Monster Mash, with games, Halloween activities and dancing. • Lunch graciously provided by the Errico Family. Parents are organizing and leading activities. Elementary - Wednesday, Oct. 31 • Pumpkin Decorating Display: children are encouraged to carve or decorate a pumpkin, fruit or vegetable of their choice and bring it to their class for display. Student Council will acknowledge all creations with certificates. • Bring costumes to school and change after lunch. • Costume Parade - Central Courtyard, 1:15 p.m. with photo ops for parents • Class parties - Immediately following the parade; parents are organizing food and decorations in each homeroom class. MS & HS- Week of Oct. 29 • Spirit Week (see schedule below) • Mock Election: Students will “register” at school and vote online. Results will be announced at the Pep Rally, Friday. • Costume Contest - Oct. 31, during morning meeting. DRAMA – Fourth graders are preparing a play to celebrate the Halloween season. It’s based on a story by James Stevenson and is called, That Terrible Halloween Night. It will be performed on Tuesday, Oct. 30, at 2:10 p.m. in the Main Hall. Parents are welcome.
MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT COUNCIL – MS is hosting a dance on Friday, Nov. 9, from 6:30 until 9:00 p.m. in the Main Hall. (Doors close at 7 p.m.) Tickets at the door are $5 with two donated canned goods, or $10 without donated cans. See Eric Devlin for more information. ART DAY – It was another amazing day! Our creative students’ brains were engaged to da max in a variety of activities. Over ?? pieces of art were created in just 5 hours. SECOND GRADE – Students have been giving oral reports on the biographies they have read.
MIDDLE SCHOOL – Students gathered in their na hui for a competition designed to practice team-building skills. Each hui was given paper, pens and tape, and were challenged to use their creativity to build a jack-o’-lantern. The winning pumpkin will be announced next week. Kianalei Kamalani & Lily DeSouza gave reports on Pocahontas and Sacajawea.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION – 7th grade students Maile Mijares, Kanani Segismundo, Sydney Agudong, and Melia Schneck (pictured below l-r in the front row) taught a class last week. They wrote up a detailed lesson plan incorporating gymnastics as well as ballet!

Enhancement Awards
Congratulations to First Lego League - Island School Robotics Team AND Island School Drama Department, the first two recipients of the PA Enhancement Awards. These awards are given monthly to provide assistance for activities and items that benefit a broad constituency (students, teachers and/or faculty) at Island School; and to encourage ideas for new activities and programs that enhance the Island School experience. Application instructions are attached to this week’s PC, and may be submitted by students, teachers or faculty of Island School. They are due by the end of each month. Next deadline is Oct. 31st.

On Stage at Island School Fall Theatre Production Runs Nov. 2-4 Island School’s talented high school thespians perform one of Moliére’s funniest comedies, “Skinflints and Scoundrels: Moliére’s Miser,” translated, adapted and arranged by Suzan Zeder, on the weekend of Nov. 2nd at the Island School theatre. This is a French farce and is a “play within a play” taking place in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles outside Paris in the 17th century. Moliére, the playwright, has been hired to entertain the court of King Louis XIV with a theatrical production. He is annoyed with the Assistant Minister of Culture who won’t pay him in advance. He threatens to walk out, but finally agrees to perform a different title, one that draws attention to his stinginess. The Miser centers around Harpagon, who holds very tightly to his money. When his two grown children want to marry, all he sees is dollar signs (well, pistoles and ecus) and he makes it an exercise in spending as little as possible. The cast, directed by Peggy Ellenburg, stars Quinn Hannah-White, ‘14, as Harpagon, the miser. His son, Cleante, is played by Philipp Zaviryukha, ‘13, and daughter, Elise, is played by Raina Silver, ‘16. Other cast members include Christy Jo Williams, ‘14, as the matchmaker, Frosine, Stephen Foster, ‘15, as La Fleche, Zeb Wichert, ‘15 as Valere, Ava Zebzda, ‘13, as Jacques, Imara Joroff, ‘15, as Marianne, Shawna Dinnan, ‘15, as Brindavoine, Ian Cowden, ‘15, as Simon and Dame Claude, and Eric Potter, 16, as the Officer. Adding some
extra spice to the cast will be Dr. Jeffrey Kozak, playing the role of Pierre Pomponne, Assistant Minister of Culture. Providing baroque background music are Kim McDonough, ‘13, on violin, Ava Zebzda on autoharp and Michael Miller, ‘15, on piano. Raina Silver will join them in a traditional song at intermission. Each performance features a “celebrity” duo playing the roles of King Louis XIV and his mistress, the Marquise de Montespan. On Friday night, Philip Steinbacher and Cindy Wortmann will play these roles; on Saturday, Clare Petterson and Rory McClure; on Sunday, Justin Kollar and Sierra Hampton-Eng. ”I first directed this play in 2003,” said Ellenburg. “It has become one of our favorite shows and destined for a comeback. We’re staging it as we did in 2003, on the floor of the Main Hall, with the audience seated on two sides. This allows for the comedic asides and audience interactions that were prevalent in 17th century French court performances.” The show is being produced with permission from Dramatic Publishing, Woodstock, Illinois. Showtimes are Friday and Saturday, Nov. 2 & 3 at 7:00 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 4, at 4:00 p.m. at the Island School Theatre in Puhi, behind Kaua‘i Community College. Tickets are $6 in advance or $8 at the door. Family passes for $15 are available in advance.
